Publisher The righteous man regards the life of his animal, Mary G. Wright But the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. MaryG@petpagesatlanta.com Proverbs 12:10 Did you know, County Animal Shelters (Animal Control) are County owned and tax payer supported? They must take in all stray and owner surrendered animals. Animal Control may euthanize animals due to space limitations. County shelters may contract shelter “operations” to non-profit organizations such as LifeLine in DeKalb and Fulton. LifeLine’s goal supports a “no-kill” community. Humane Societies are private rescue shelters usually donation-based or nonprofit organizations. These are usually “low-kill” or “no-kill” shelters and only euthanize when there is no chance of rehabilitation or prolonged suffering. If you must surrender your pet, seek out a “no-kill” shelter. “No-kill” shelters go above and beyond the call of duty to offer a safe haven for as long as it takes for pets to be adopted. Both organizations rely on volunteer and donations. So, please help with your time and contributions.

y now everyone has heard the news from the national press about the dreaded Canine Influenza also known as the H3N2 virus. Canine Influenza has been around for a number of years in the form of a strain known as the H3N8 virus which has an effective vaccine but this new virus, H3N2, does not currently have a vaccine, hence the concern surrounding this illness.

Even though there seems to be mixed feedback as to where this latest virus came from including from Florida based Equines, there seems to be some agreement from the veterinary immunology community that it came from the rescue of "food" animals brought into Michigan from east Asia, namely Korea. And from there it has spread nationally. No good deed goes unpunished!

about K-9 Flu

through the sickness, although inconvenient and time consuming from a supportive care standpoint. Just like we do with the human flu when a family member gets sick. Symptoms including respiratory issues like sneezing, coughing, and runny nose. If you see these symptoms in your dog, see a vet immediately and do not expose your dogs to other dogs due to the highly contagious nature of the disease. A vet will prescribe antibiotics to counteract potential secondary bacterial infections and advise rest with fluids. Now for the good news, there is no evidence that the virus is transferable to humans.

gency care with a specialty in canine immunology and disease, and the other representing a local veterinarian specializing in animal disease. Many myths and truths surrounding the disease were addressed including: First and foremost, the virus is not a death sentence for your dog, in fact it is killed by just soap and water! However, it is highly contagious right now until dogs in this country develop antibodies against it over the next few months or until the industry develops an effective vaccine. The virus is much like the human flu virus in that it is prevalent in the environment and on many surfaces, including the sidewalk outside your home for up to a 48 hour period after an infected dog walks by. Airborne exposure can be widespread but it does not create a problem until the virus multiplies to the point where a dog's immunity system get's overwhelmed by it. Again much like the human flu. The virus is best fought by keeping surfaces as clean and sterile as possible but you cannot completely eliminate exposure for your dog. As long as your pup is not immune compromised or very young or very old, your dog should make it

While Canine Influenza is serious, it does not live up to the hype created in the media. In fact, if you have noticed, the media has already moved on to the next big lead story for the next few weeks then will move on to something else that ensures a ratings surge. So just be careful and pay attention to your environment and we will all get through this situation. Malcolm Aga The Pet Resorts - Dunwoody 4343 Dunwoody Park Dunwoody, GA 30338

for Cats and Dogs? Low Level Laser Therapy is a form of phototherapy or light therapy. This involves the application of low power light (red and near infrared light) to injuries or wounds to improve soft tissue healing and relieve both acute and chronic pain. It is also known as cold laser, soft laser or low intensity laser. Low level laser therapy aims to biostimulate. Because of the low power nature of low level laser therapy the effects are biochemical and not thermal and cannot cause heating and thereby damage to living tissue. This has both anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects.

Meet Your Dream In September, the three-time Eastern Conference Champion Atlanta Dream, in its eighth season in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), dedicated their game against the Mystics to celebrating animal welfare with the pre-game rescue event “Pet Palooza”. “Pet Palooza” is a partnership between the Atlanta Dream, Atlanta Pet Rescue & Adoption (APAR) and Pet Pages Atlanta to fill the Philips arena with local vendors selling homemade doggie treats, handmade pet accessories, adoptable pets, and collection bins to collect shelter supplies for APRA. Plus a portion of ticket sales were donated to APRA, a non-profit, no-kill shelter dedicated

to rescuing and rehabilitating dogs and cats so they can be adopted into safe and loving homes.

On April 18, Dream co-owner Kelly Loeffler was honored at APRA’s Second Annual Rescues on the Runway event with the organization’s Mercy Award. The award is named after Mercy – APRA’s first pitbull who was rescued from animal control in 2013. After much effort to save Mercy she succumed to Babesia. Babesia is thought to be the second-most common blood parasite of mammals, and they can have a major impact on health of domestic animals in areas without severe winters. The Mercy Memorial fund was developed not only to honor Mercy’s life, but to help future special needs animals, with 100 percent of all money raised designated to help animals with special medical needs. Find out more about APRA at www.atlantapetrecue.org. Get your Dream tickets for next season and keep your eye on Pet Pages Atlanta and our new project “Atlanta Pet Life” to know when the next big event will be.

ut what if there is a better way and we are just not aware of it? When it comes to what happens to your pet when he or she passes there is now an alternative in the Metro Atlanta Area, Heavenly Paws Pet Aquamation. Alkaline hydrolysis (aka Aquamation) is essentially an accelerated version of what takes place in natural decomposition. A combination of gentle water flow, low temperature, and alkalinity is used to accelerate the natural course of tissue hydrolysis. At the end of the process the body has been returned to its natural form, dissolved in the water. Remember - our bodies are 65% water to begin with! Similar to fire cremation, the only solid remains are the mineral ash of the bones. The liquid byproduct

The effluent is an excellent micronutrient package that can benefit wastewater treatment plants and/ or be used as a fertilizer. Randy Stewart, Owner and Founder of Heavenly Paws states; “As a pet parent and pet advocate Aquamation is how I want my pets to be treated. We come into the world from water and what’s more natural than to leave the world in water?” Although Aquamation was originally patented in 1888, it has only been in the past 20 years, with increasing awareness of the environmental hazards of fire cremation that Aquamation has become available to the public. Aquamation has been used for years by facilities including: UGA, UCLA, the Mayo Clinic, Duke University, Colorado State University, Texas A&M, the US Government to name a few. UGA has been operating two Alkaline Hydrolysis systems for over ten years in the BSL-3Ag Research Facility and the Veterinary School. Heavenly Paws employs a patented machine that has been

Acupuncture for Animals???

Absolutely!!!

Will your pet benefit from acupuncture? If your pet is suffering from a condition that causes pain, such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, spinal disc disease, neck, shoulder, knee or back pain, limping, muscle soreness or spasm, injuries or weak hind legs, then acupuncture is likely to help. Acupuncture generally works wonders for geriatric animals that are slowing down and having trouble with overall mobility. TCVM can also help with vomiting or diarrhea, respiratory conditions, skin conditions such as lick granulomas or allergies, behavioral disorders and neurological conditions such as paralysis and seizures. In addition, acupuncture is used to keep canine athletes in top physical condition by helping to keep muscles and tendons resistant to injury.

Dr. Mitzi Schepps, a certified veterinary acupuncturist, and her dog Mordi.

Many people have heard of using acupuncture to treat people, but did you know that it can also be used to heal animals? The Chinese discovered acupuncture over 4,000 years ago, making it the oldest form of healing known for both humans and animals. Today, Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) is widely used in Eastern countries (China, Japan, Korea, and others) and is steadily gaining popularity in Western countries to treat a variety of animal species, including dogs and cats.

Is acupuncture safe? Yes, but only if administered by a veterinarian who has successfully completed an extensive post-doctoral educational program in veterinary acupuncture. Because of the differences in anatomy, and the potential for harm if done incorrectly, only a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist (CVA) should treat your pet. In most countries, states, and provinces, acupuncture is considered a surgical procedure that only licensed veterinarians may legally administer.

The goal of acupuncture is to promote the body to heal itself. This is achieved by correcting imbalances in the body, using tiny, painless needles to stimulate acupuncture points (acupoints). The acupoints are where nerve bundles and blood vessels come together and can be found on meridians (energy channels) that course over the body’s surface. The Chinese discovered that there are 361 acupoints in people and 173 in cats and dogs, astoundingly without the use of any technology! Modern research confirms that the stimulation of acupoints induces the release of endorphins, serotonin, anti-inflammatory hormones and other chemicals that are responsible for pain relief and healing.

Dr. Mitzi Schepps is the owner of Wellness Waggin’ Acupuncture, a mobile acupuncture practice servicing Marietta and surrounding areas. Contact them to see if acupuncture can benefit your dog or cat. www.wellwag.com

Dog Park Tips for a Better Trip Take the leash off. Leaving the leash on can cause your pet’s behavior to be stressful plus it could easily get tangled. Be vigilant. Keep your eye on your pet no matter how enjoyable your human companions maybe. Watch out for your pet’s temperament and the actions of the other dogs. Keep Moving. By keeping your pet active and moving you will avoid most conflicts. Save treats and toys for another time and place. No need to tempt food or possession aggressions. Stay calm and relaxed. Your attitude and energy can be felt by your pet so, relax and enjoy your time together. Watch the gate. Make sure the gates stay closed and dogs enter and leave on an individual basis. Close the gate behind you! Scoop The Poo! Not only does it stink, but dog waste left in the park attracts flies that bite and annoy pets and people. Waste can potentially contaminate ground water. Don’t leave your mess for someone else. Pick it up, besides you want to know the health of your pet and the best way to do that is to check what comes out.

Mister Migs brings couture style to functional dog apparel and accessories Dog Gear for Good than I ever imagined!” Lynn says “Dressing is not just about putting clothes on dogs. It’s also about gear like leashes, collars, backpacks and other things they need. We design first around our dogs’ taking into account how they move. Then we create their gear and load it with detail and style suitable for park play or uptown fun-whatever it is they like to do with their human.” Mister Migs grew out of Lynn’s two great passions – dogs and fabric arts. She drew up some original designs for vests and harnesses using recycled denim as a key element, and then pitched the idea to Rosemary Hopper, former associate professor of fashion design with Bauder College, who was intrigued by the idea of creating a pet apparel design house on par with any producing human fashions. Hopper kept the basics of the signature denim look and expanded the line to include other elements, such as environmentally friendly finishes like fray, tie-dye and weaves. Mister Migs plans to unveil its first collection of couture wear and gear at its “Denim Dogs Fashion Blast 2015” event, scheduled for Saturday, 7 November at Ambient + Studio in Atlanta. For more information on Mister Migs and the event, visit www.mistermigs.com.

Watch out, Chanel, Fendi and Prada – Mister Migs is taking high couture to the dogs. The non-profit organization headquartered in Tucker, Georgia, designs high-quality couture “Dog Gear for Good” – the “good” part providing real-world business experience for marginalized young adults, many of whom have developmental disabilities and autism. But what distinguishes Mister Migs’s designs from other pet apparel is an element of fun with a nod to the world’s high fashion houses.

No-Kill Atlanta by 2016 Kicks Off "I'm In"

Campaign for a

LifeLine Animal Project, the non-profit that manages DeKalb and Fulton County Animal Services shelters, asks Atlantans to join its historic effort to make Atlanta a no-kill community for DeKalb and Fulton shelter pets by the end of 2016.

Under LifeLine’s leadership, both shelters have almost reached the no-kill threshold, defined as saving 90% or more of the animals entering the shelters. The “I’m In” campaign, which features local spokespeople declaring their support for a no-kill Atlanta, kicked off July 1.

According to LifeLine CEO Rebecca Guinn, the organization seeks city-wide support for their campaign. “To create a no-kill community in Atlanta, we need the community,” she says. “Spaying or neutering your pet, adopting rather than purchasing pets, licensing your pet, volunteering at one of our shelters or donating funds -- every action can help ensure the success of a no-kill Atlanta by the end of 2016.”

In 2014, LifeLine cared for 15,559 homeless animals and has dramatically increased adoption rates by 98 percent since commencing management of the county shelters.

they must be less than 1000 micrometers in size. The Microbubble Skin Therapy system creates millions of bubbles that range from 3-20 micrometers (perspective: a human hair is 70 micrometers and most bacteria is 3-40 micrometers). This is perfect for penetrating hair follicles and skin pores while not passing through the epidermis.

A revolutionary new way to keep your pet’s skin clean and healthy has made its way to the USA. It has been used extensively in veterinarian’s offices and grooming salons in Japan for years.

What is Microbubble Skin Therapy? Basically, it’s a bath that deep cleans the hair of your pet and, more importantly, it deep cleans the skin using nothing but microbubbles. Dirt accumulated inside the pores is one of the causes of bad odor and skin/coat problems. To ensure an even deeper clean, we add an all-natural plant enzyme that helps loosen the dirt and debris that is stuck on the skin wall that we can’t see. No soaps, shampoos or any chemicals of any kind are used in this process. It’s completely hypoallergenic. This special bath reduces odor, itching and skin irritation, and it improves results of other skin therapies your vet may recommend.

How do microbubbles compare to medicated shampoos? Microbubbles work on a much deeper level than any soaps or shampoos, and will enhance the efficiency of any other skin therapies. Fido’s Market is proud to be the first and only place in Georgia to offer this amazing technology. Call us at 678-240-0440 for more information.

What are microbubbles?

Very tiny bubbles. To be a microbubble,

The Magical Healing Power of Water

I

n the human world, physical therapy is commonplace for the treatment of orthopedic injuries such as sprains, strains, fractures, tendon inflammation, ruptures, and joint replacements. Our canine counterparts sustain CCL (cranial cruciate ligament) injuries just as we experience ACL injuries.

Dogs undergo hip replacement procedures, as well as other surgeries, just like humans. Not only do we expect to be referred to physical therapy by the orthopedic surgeon post joint replacement surgery, we should also experience “prehab” therapy visits. “Prehab” is a term used by physical therapists to optimize the joint-muscle balance prior to a surgical procedure. The goal is to decrease swelling, increase joint ROM (range of motion), muscle flexibility, and to minimize muscle atrophy (wasting) by teaching the muscles to fire properly. As I have always coached my human patients, “swelling is not your friend”. When a joint is swollen, the muscles that move it lose their lines of communication with the joint and they “forget” how to work. The same is true for our furry family members. As a physical therapist for 29 years (and a certified canine rehabilitation therapist) the exercises, manual therapy techniques, and physical modalities that we utilize for human healing are also highly effective for the healing process of our pets. I have been surrounded by water my entire life, and have witnessed the healing power that it possesses. I completed my Masters’ thesis research on the comparison of exercise in an underwater treadmill system versus a traditional land-based treadmill. In my years of human physical therapy practice, my patients who exercised in the underwater treadmill had terrific outcomes. The support of the water, through the buoyancy it pro-

vides, can alleviate up to 50% of the weight bearing load off of the joints, allowing muscle relaxation, decreased pain, and resulting in fluidity of movement and improved function. The underwater treadmill system is also great for general exercise, weight management, and fitness training for our canine athletes. Resistance training in water, against the jets, is a great way to build muscle explosiveness and endurance. The PawStand, has been working with dock diving dogs to help them perform better during their competitions. We have a Hudson AquaPAWS PLUS system, which is currently the only one in the state of Georgia. We offer canine rehabilitation and fitness programs. When you visit The PawStand, you will find all natural pet foods, treats, accessories, vitamins, supplements, two (medium to XL) self-serve dog spas, and a teacup spa for our tiny friends. Cat in the Box

Want a happy cat? Get a box. Whether their predator instinct leaves them to believe that this is the best place to launch a surprise attack, or a safe and secure place to contemplate cathood, the box is essential. When you bring your new kitty home from the shelter, leave the box that she traveled in, out. Studies show cats with familiar secure places to hide adjust to new environments quicker and with less stress. Another reason why cats seek the sanctity of the box could be warmth. Cats are naturally a tropical species and even the domestic cat is most comfortable with temperatures between 86-97 degrees Fahrenheit.

Scrub Dog... Drink Coffee

Scrub Dog... Drink Coffee- A Family Affair

The idea for Perk-N-Pooch was born out of three things: our love for dogs … our passion for coffee … a walk along the beach. A simple walk on a Southern California beach sparked an idea that turned into Perk-N-Pooch. Avid dog owners the Guerrisi’s thought the idea of combining a coffee shop with a dog wash facility in the Atlanta area would be a “cool” idea since nothing like it existed in the state of Georgia. Bringing the concept to life was a family affair. Our son, who was a Visual Design and Film student at Purdue University, came up with the logo design. Lexis, an Auburn University graduate, helped with the business design and is involved running the day-to-day business. Of course Buddy, Sweet P and Jett, our three rescues (2 Basset Hounds and a Great Dane!) love to come for their spa treatments! We believe that pets are part of American families as they bring many positive health benefits to their owners. Pet owners increasingly need a high quality platform, other than just dog parks, to spend quality time with their dogs. The Guerrisi family wanted to create a space where we could provide such convenience and facilities for dog and coffee lovers alike. The Guerrisi family also believes it is important to give back to the community. We actively support various pet rescue organizations such as Basset Hound Rescue, Atlanta Lab Rescue, Angels Among Us and Canine Cellmates to name a few. Our facility is available for various activities (e.g.; dog clubs, book clubs or social gatherings) either during or after business hours. 67

Why Goats are Good for Our School

By: Hannah Smith of ABC Montessori School, Written at age 7 on learning, hands- on love Goats are a wonderful thing and hands-on farming. at our school. They may look See! This is why all schools weird or do strange things we need a goat! are not use to but students get a chance to learn a lot about animals by having these goats. You know we learn love from goats? By caring for them and learning about them and we also learn to love. By love I mean we learn how to form relationships with animals, you know they need us? By learning to take care of them we learn how to take care of other things like pets, plants and ourself. Also they can be our friends too! On a bad day or sad day a goat is a great thing to hug on. Did you know goats help us save money? You know Mr. Larry doesn’t have to pay to get his grass mowed he has our goats to do that. Also the students in Upper Elementary feed the goats our left over food. This helps cut down on trash cost and helps put nutrients back into the soil naturally. You know people pay big bucks for a goat poop? It is a great thing to make soil fertile and we get it for free! Another thing our goats help us do is learn about farming from Mr. Larry. We watch him take care of them and we learn about how to too! Our class is allowed to take care of them all by ourself now, we even wear our farming boots to do it. So far we have learned how to walk a goat, how they have babies, how to milk a goat, how to feed a goat, how to brush a goat and now we are watching the babies grow up.

If you really think about it, having a goat is really hands-

Raw Food Providers Raw Food Diets are becoming increasingly popular as pet owners are searching for natural ways to keep their pets healthy. Many raw food manufacturers are pet owners themselves and have turned to raw diets to provide a healthier lifestyle for their pets. It is important to educate yourself about the proper procedures and nutritional requirements for your pets. Research and talk to people who understand the concerns of feeding a raw diet. Any of these listed businesses would be excited to help concerned pet owners understand how to feed your pet a raw diet, and help you with the right choices.

EPI in Pets

Answers Pet Food..........................................1.800.431.8480 Corina’s Corner www.corinascorner.com 722 W College Ave, Decatur...... 404.687.8001

The exocrine pancreas has an essential role in the digestion and absorption of nutrients. Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI), is the inability of the pancreas to manufacture and secrete the necessary enzymes required by the body to digest food and absorb nutrients causing the body to starve no matter how much food your pet eats. EPI, is sometimes referred to as Pancreatic Hypoplasia or Pancreatic Acinar Atrophy (PAA). Or EPI can also be the secondary condition of a chronic illness, such as chronic pancreatitis.

Any breed and even cats can have EPI. The only way to confirm EPI is with a TLI (Trypsin-Like Immunoreactivity) blood test. The most common symptoms are: Gradual wasting away despite a voracious appetite Eliminating much more frequently, sometimes every hour or two Stools are greasy voluminous yellowish cowplops, but sometimes grayish Eating their own stools, or other inappropriate substances Increased rumbling sounds from the abdomen Increased passing amounts of flatulence Some dogs do not show any typical signs Some experience intermittent watery diarrhea or vomiting Some dogs even display personality changes such as fearfulness or sudden aggression Most dogs and cats with EPI can be successfully treated by dietary supplementation with pancreatic enzymes. Dried extracts of bovine or porcine pancreas are available. An excellent source of information about pet EPI is the Epi4Dogs Foundation, Inc. www.epi4dogs.com
