Dave Spikey ‘Juggling On A Motorbike’ Thurs 21 February, 7.30pm Gatehouse Theatre Tickets £18.50 Age guidance 14+ Dave had been working in the NHS for 19 years as a Biomedical Scientist when in 1988 someone uttered the immortal words, “You’re really funny, you should be a comedian” and for some reason, he took them seriously!! Only a few short months later he was crowned the winner of the national talent show “Stairway to the Stars”. Larry Grayson, one of the judges, told him that it was a close run thing on the night but what clinched the
award for Dave was his routine about a juggler on a motorbike. Fast forward 13 years (Is that possible?) to Friday 13th October 2000 , the day Dave switched off his microscope for good and found himself, the following Monday, sitting on rain swept local car park dressed as a giant berry!! So now in 2018 he celebrates the 30th anniversary of his comedy career. In this show he will look back on his remarkable life and his incredible
journey from working class lad to Chief Biomedical Scientist to much loved comedy performer and writer via Phoenix Nights, Eight out of Ten Cats, Bullseye, Dead Man Weds, Magnolia, The Royal Variety Show, Parkinson and many more. He often reflects that maybe none of this would have happened and he might still be looking down his microscope today if it wasn’t for the juggler on the motorbike.

The Mersey Beatles Sat 9 March, 8pm Gatehouse Theatre Tickets £18.50 There are a lot of Beatles tribute bands all over the world and I’ve seen them all, but The Mersey Beatles are the best I’ve heard.” So said John Lennon’s Sister, Julia Baird in 2008. Since then Liverpool’s favourite Beatles tribute band, voted as best Beatles band by the British Beatles fan club, have racked up over 3500 performances at the Cavern Club alone. They have headlined festivals and events the world over. So busy were they with overseas tours they had to leave their Cavern Club residency in February 2012. After 10 years in the role as the one and only resident Beatles band and the world’s most famous club, it was an emotional farewell. On returning to the UK they were welcomed back to The Cavern Club where they still play to this day. The show consists of all era Beatles classics in full costume. From “Love me do” to “Let it be” via “Beatlemania” and “Pepperland”. Like the original Fab Four, The Mersey Beatles are Liverpool lads born and bred. No phoney accents needed, no script required. They react and interact with the audience in the relaxed and natural way of their role models and all the songs are performed in the original recorded key. When all of this is put together it means the best music ever made is performed with the spontaneity, energy, excitement and respect which this fantastic music deserves. All your favourite Beatles classics in one concert.

We grew up in Stafford, in a house full of music. Our dad won a singing competition in Stafford Borough Hall when he was sixteen. He dabbled on the piano, banjo and clarinet and encouraged us to follow our dream. His record collection consisted mostly of American country music, Jim Reeves, Johnny Cash, Eddy Arnold along with other favourites like Al Jolson and Bing Crosby. All have had an influence on our musical styles. In our late teens we were introduced to the folk world by our good friend Roger Peet: Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen and the brit folk of Donovan, Martin Carthy and Fairport Convention.

In 1941, Rudolf Höss, Commandant of the Nazi concentration camp known as Auschwitz, assembled his SS personnel in a secret meeting with the express purpose of introducing a new method for exterminating Europe’s Jews: Zyklon B, a deadly poison gas. Every soldier in attendance was sworn to secrecy, and no one questioned its usage. No one except a lone Jewish prisoner, forced to participate and humiliated throughout; the very prisoner upon which this “lesson” would be demonstrated. Based upon real events, ‘A Lesson from Auschwitz’ explores how and why the Nazis did what they did, shedding light on the mentality of the perpetrators and the disturbing reality of life in a death camp. David Starkey A Monarchy of Misfits? Tue 14 May, 7pm Gatehouse Theatre Tickets £17.50 The marriage of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, when the second son of the Prince of Wales married a divorced American actress of mixed race and uncertain religion, was seen as marking a fundamental modernisation of the British monarchy. Actually, it was only a return the 14th century when one of the many sons of King Edward III married a twice-divorced merry widow who’d eloped with her first husband at the age of 12; another a partMoorish Spanish princess who (it is claimed) was a direct descendent of the Prophet Muhammad; while a third wed the au pair! This talk traces the radically shifting marriage customs of the British monarchy, from the laxity of the Middle Ages, through the stringencies of the Hanoverians, to the house of Windsor and its sometimes contorted adaptations to the realities of modern family life.

Ruby Wax: How to Be Human Sat 1 June, 7.30pm Gatehouse Theatre Tickets £22.50 How to be human... We can’t stop the future from arriving, no matter what drugs we’re on. But even if nearly every part of us becomes robotic, mechanical fingers crossed we’ll still have our minds. Hopefully we’ll use them for things like compassion, instead of just chasing what’s ‘better’ like a hamster on a wheel. If we can do that, we’re on the yellow brick road to happiness. With a little help from monk Gelong Thubten, who explains how the mind works, and neuroscientist Ash Ranpura who explains where everything that makes us ‘us’ can be found in the brain. How to be Human is the show you need to help you upgrade your mind as much as you’ve upgraded your iPhone.

Old Herbaceous Fri 21 June, 7.30pm MET Studio Tickets £15.00 Described as “Downton Abbey with gardening tips”, Old Herbaceous is the humorous love story of a single-minded yet gentle man with a passion for plants and is a charming one man play which has entranced sell-out audiences all around the country over the last two years. An acute and sometimes hilarious observation of relationships between the classes in a simpler
age, Old Herbaceous is sprinkled with witticisms and epithets. The evening blossoms into tender humour, much in the traditionally understated English style of the early 20th century. As Old Herbaceous, renowned actor Giles Shenton truly lives the part of the legendary Head Gardener, Herbert Pinnegar, inviting you to feel included in a private
chat from a bygone, comforting age. Keeping you engrossed, amused and emotionally engaged from start to finish, Old Herbaceous will leave you with a feeling that, perhaps, all’s right with the world. Wonderful production... Downton Abbey with gardening tips Surrey Advertiser

Mummy has an idea... when she can get away from all the other ideas, that the world is full of mums who go to advanced yoga classes, get tiddly on a half glass of white wine, and attend polite book clubs. Mummy does not want to go quietly into that good night, of women with sensible haircuts who live only for their family and stand in the playground trying to trump each other by bragging about their offspring’s academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and their latest overseas holidays. Instead, she clutches a large and full glass of wine, muttering ‘FML’ over and over again, until she remembers that great idea...
Tickets £14.50, conc. £12.50
Based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, GODSPELL has regularly been performed successfully since it opened on Broadway in 1971. The first musical theatre offering from three-time Grammy and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz, who went on to write Pippin, Children of Eden and Wicked, GODSPELL was quickly adapted for film and, injected with contemporary references and dazzling new arrangements, it continues to be a sensation that touches audiences to this day.
weeks in the Top Ten. Since publication of her first book just over a year ago Gill has sold over half a million books.
Featuring the international hit ‘Day by Day’ along with well-known songs such as ‘All for the Best’, ‘By my Side’and ‘Light of the World’, GODSPELL is a rock opera that boasts an eclectic blend of music ranging from R&B to vaudeville. These songs are employed by a troupe of eccentric players, who tell the tale of Jesus in a new age through parables, games and storytelling, all interspersed with hefty doses of comedy. Watch as the story of Jesus’ life dances across the stage, dissolving hauntingly into the Last Supper and the Crucifixion but leaving Jesus’ messages of kindness, tolerance and love to live vibrantly on.
