2020
welcome... Well what an end to 2019, Peter Pan is now safely back in Neverland and we are busy preparing the Theatre for what is set to be an incredible season. Kicking off Spring/ Summer are six friends from New York City! Chandler, Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Joey and their perhaps more famous sofa are coming to Stafford in March for Friends! The Musical Parody. The show sold out incredibly fast but we have managed to secure a return visit in October! We are delighted to be hosting the world premiere of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, when it opens at The Gatehouse on Friday 10th April for two performances prior to commencing its national tour. The show has been described as being like an episode of Loose Women but with a lot more singing and dancing, taking a no-holds-barred comedy romp through everything life throws at a modern day woman! Join us, Linda Nolan, Jess Wright, Niki Evans and Leanne Jones, for a hit of raucous comedy! In 2019 we brought dinosaurs to life on stage, this year we are hugely excited to welcome the brand new show ‘Dragons & Mythical Beasts’ a fantastical interactive show for all the family! You can get up close and personal with some of the most magnificent monsters and terrifying beasts ever to walk the earth! Don’t forget our Summer School Auditions take place on the 29th March, last year’s production of The Addams Family was a huge success and it’s a wonderful opportunity for young people to get involved with a professional production, not to mention it’s three weeks of the Summer holidays taken care of! If your child is interested in theatre, our four Youth Theatre shows in the MET Studio are a wonderful introduction to what we do here at the Gatehouse. This year our groups are performing Terry Pratchett’s ‘The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents’, Philip Pullman’s ‘Grimm Tales’, the coming of age classic ‘Stand By Me’ and ‘The Flint Street Nativity’ by Tim Firth.
A very special guest will be helping us celebrate VE Day on the 7th May, the incredible Colin Thackery, winner of Britain’s Got Talent will be making an appearance for an evening of 30’s and 40’s music in aid of SSAFA Staffordshire – The Armed Forces Charity. Another charity event close to our hearts is Stafford’s very own Real Full Monty, as if we didn’t see enough last year, they will be joining us again in May to raise money for: ‘A Child of Mine’ - Supporting bereaved parents, Andy’s Man Club, The Samaritans and Childhood Cancer Parents Alliance. 2020 sees Stafford Festival Shakespeare turn thirty and we have an incredible production lined up! Come and join us at the castle this summer, for the Bard’s most famous tale of star crossed lovers. What could be more perfect on a warm starry night? So grab a brew and flick through the pages of our latest brochure, it is packed full of comedy, drama, music and family shows to delight young and old! We hope to see you very soon!

The Unremarkable Death of Marilyn Monroe
ZOG
From Dyad Productions. August 5th, 1962: Monroe as we’ve never seen her before: alone in her bedroom, in dressing gown and underwear; no glitz, no glamour, no masks. Overdosed on pills, the woman behind the icon unravels her remarkable life and bares all revealing a biting intelligence, a frustrated talent and an imperfect body. This stark confessional offers a radical interpretation of this Hollywood icon and leads us, in real time, to the very moment of her death.
Large in size, and keen in nature, Zog is so eager to win a golden star at Madam Dragon’s school, he bumps, burns and roars his way through. Luckily, the plucky Princess Pearl patches him up ready to face his biggest challenge yet… The smash-hit stage adaptation from Freckle Productions (the team behind Stick Man and Tabby McTat) is back in 2020! With brand new songs from Joe Stilgoe, directed by Emma Kilbey, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s Zog is a magical production for all ages.

Stafford Players A Month of Sundays
Only Fools and Boycie
A comedy about the difficulties inherent in growing old. Cooper, who’s in a nursing home rather than become a burden on his family, flirts valiantly with the female staff, banters with the other old folks and keeps a check on his "record of physical deteriorations”. To the painful ritual of Sunday family visits and empty condescension, Cooper and his friend Aylott reply with humour, aware that life can only be endured if treated as a comedy.
Only Fools And Boycie – An intimate evening with Only Fools And Horses actor John Challis. Enjoy an intimate evening with John Challis, one of the nation's greatest comedy actors, best known as Boycie in BBC1's Only Fools and Horses. In this one-off show the national treasure will reveal secrets from the set with stories and anecdotes from his dazzling career.

Over March to May 2020 the Gatehouse Theatre will have its very own Writer in Residence: Martin Sketchley. Through the residency Martin will seek stories from local people about the Gatehouse Theatre, Stafford and the surrounding area. Perhaps you’re a creative writer yourself and have written something inspired by or set in the area, or maybe you have a story to tell but aren’t quite sure how to start. From 7 March to 4 May Martin will be on site one day a week to listen to and write up your stories, or offer advice on your own creative writing in one-to-one writing surgeries. It’s possible your work may even be published on the Gatehouse website. There will also be workshops from local writers William Gallagher, Fiona Joseph and Maria Whatton. So make a date, visit the Gatehouse, and unlock your storytelling potential. Martin Who? Martin Sketchley grew up in Tamworth and now lives in Birmingham. He is a published writer of novels, short stories and drama scripts, the Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Aston University, and the West Midlands’ Representative for the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain. He was writer/producer/director on the recent My Beating Heart showcase in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, and is an experienced workshop lead. 2020 will also see the publication of his most recent short story – Your Lovin’ Arms – an alternate history loosely based on the life of Dead or Alive singer Pete Burns. He also has over 2o years’ experience working on business analysis destined for blue-chip multinationals and organisations such as The British Council and World Bank.
