Steel Magnolias Written by Robert Harling Originally produced by the W.P.A. Theatre, New York City, 1987. (Kyle Renick, Artistic Director Produced by April Bridgeman Directed by Sarah Hardy Assistant Directed by Ashley McGee PLACE: Chinquapin, Louisiana Act I: Scene 1: April Act 1: Scene 2: December Act II: Scene 1: June, eighteen months later Act II: Scene 2: November The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, (“I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years”); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

STEEL MAGNOLIAS is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC, servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection. (www.dramatists.com)

Steel Magnolias DIRECTOR’S NOTES: Steel Magnolias is a show that I continue to love and learn from each time I work with the script. It is about friendship, and how that friendship supports, accepts, and carries people through life. While on the surface the play shows 6 women joking, teasing, and enjoying each other's company, the audience gets a glimpse of the bonds they share and how their relationships grow and intertwine with each other over a few years time. The audience shares in the ways a new member of the group is helped through her own problems, being accepted for who she is and who she grows to be by the end of the play. They see into one family's dynamics, glimpsing at the relationship between mother and daughter and how it grows, yet stays the same, through life's everchanging path. And the audience sees how through tragedy true friendships sustain and support those who need it. During this production, art imitates life was my own personal theme. The cast and crew of the production helped me through my own tragedy of discovering my father's illness and eventual passing. Everyone pulled together to support my own family while at the same time continuing to work towards a wonderfully professional, finished product. I often found myself quoting lines from the script as I went on my own journey. "Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion" took on a whole new meaning for me, and I truly believe "life goes on" because I have my very own Steel Magnolias in my life. I hope you, the audience, will enjoy seeing the strength and compassion each of these women bring to their characters as they share a bit of their true selves with you. - Sarah

Steel Magnolias Leah Daily (Truvy Jones)

Truvy runs a salon out of her enclosed carport. Her ladies get only the best, and that is why she has never lost a customer to the Beauty Box or the Kut N' Kurl. Leah Daily is excited to be on stage again at StageCoach Theatre. In 2021 she produced The 39 Steps and reprised the role of Eliza for the stage adaptation of The Hamilton Murders. Some of her favorite roles over the years include Heidi Holland in The Heidi Chronicles (WATCH Nomination, Best Actress); Jessie Mae in The Trip to Bountiful (RCP Best Supporting Actress) and Gertrude Dueter in The Underpants (FCT Best Supporting Actress). Leah would like to thank Sarah & Ashley for this opportunity, the Magnolias with whom she shares the stage, and the amazing crew. Special shout out to Jay & Henry for their support. She hopes that you enjoy your visit to Truvy's and time spent with friends.

Victoria Rose (Annelle Dupuy-Desoto)

Annelle is new in town. She really needs this job, because she may (or may not) be married to a dangerous criminal. Victoria Rose is an actress, artist and animal rights activist. She lives in the DC metro area with her spunky rescued rabbit Cordelia. Victoria graduated from the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts. Where she played Cecelia/Men are Dogs, Tiresias/Oedipus, Vagrant/The World We Live In. Other favorite roles include Sandra/A Cold Blue Place (M.C.T Company), Hero/Much Ado About Nothing (R.R.R Theatre), and Hermia/A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Castaways Theatre).

Barbara Gertzog (Clairee Belcher)

Clairee is the former mayor's wife. She loves football, and is adjusting to life as a widow. Barbara Gertzog is a community theater veteran. Barbara has acted, directed and performed behind the scenes for over 20 years, primarily with Providence Players. Thank you, StageCoach Theatre, for the warm welcome and to the Magnolias, my love and respect.

Caleigh Davis (Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie)

Shelby is looking forward to her wedding. She is a nurse who loves babies, and is excited for her future with her soon-to-be husband. Caleigh Riordan Davis is a recent graduate of American University. Favorite roles include Lucy in You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown (WST), Varya in Too Much Unhappy (AU DPA), Ophelia in Hamlet (BADA), April in Company (AU Players) and Edna in Bright Star (LTA). Enjoy the show……and think pink!

Steel Magnolias Alex Aspiazu (M’Lynn Eatenton)

M’Lynn is a mother of three and works at the local guidance center. No matter how much personal information she may be privy to, she will not discuss business matters in a social setting. A veteran of the stage, Alex Aspiazu joined the local theatre scene only last year by originating the role of Ruth Sloane in The Social Secretary (Sterling Playmakers). Other stage credits include: Maid Marian/Much in Robin Hood (The Rose), Zangara in Assassins (Curtain Call), and Sally Bowles in Cabaret (Scotch ‘n Soda).

Echo Rue (Ouiser Boudreaux)

Ouiser isn't crazy. She's just been in a bad mood for 40 years. Echo Rue has enjoyed participating in theatrical productions around the world since she was a child, with a particular fondness for British Pantomime and anything with puppets. Her other occupational roles have included educator, librarian, military spouse, and mom. Unlike Ouiser, she has no trouble getting enough grease into her diet.

Sarah Hardy (Director) is excited to be making her directorial debut with StageCoach Theatre Company (STC)! Most recently she was the Assistant Director for STC's The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). Sarah has also choreographed several shows around the Northern Virginia area, including You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (CAST in McLean), Beauty and the Beast (The Alliance Theatre) and Oliver (Sterling Playmakers), as well as working in most other off-stage capacities, including stage managing, hair & makeup, costumes, props, and running crew. When not working behind-the-scenes, you can find Sarah onstage embracing her love of acting. Favorite roles include M'Lynn Eatenton (Steel Magnolias, Sterling Playmakers), Yente (Fiddler on the Roof, Pickwick Players), and Sarah (Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, CAST in McLean). Thanks to Ashley for believing in me and to Geoff, Evan, and Emma for supporting me from the homefront. Ashley McGee (Assistant Director) is excited to be working with StageCoach Theatre again! Ashley enjoys directing and acting. Her recent directing credits include The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) in 2021 with StageCoach Theatre, as well as Oliver! and Anything Goes with the Sterling Playmakers. She is grateful for this extremely talented cast and crew for all their hard work, Corey for his never-ending support and love, and her heavenly father.
