TECHNOLOGY has helped make the world a smaller place. If you want to check on a quality issue in a factory on the other side of the world you can have a face-to-face over Skype… or maybe even check the data the factory’s machines have been collecting in the cloud without even leaving the office. In fact, the sky is the limit in terms of what you can achieve from your desk. But the reality is, global shows – like the forthcoming Taiwan International Fastener Show and Cologne’s Hardware Fair – continue to grow, so clearly the need to step out of the office remains important. One area where shows continue to be relevant and get one over on the internet, is in the fact they curate some of the multiple options that are available out there – a bit like merchants and retailers, in fact. While the internet is big on possibility, it’s not so great on helping you navigate the possibilities and find something that might give your business a competitive edge. When you’re at a show you may just step around the corner and spot something new that has the potential to be a big seller. Or bump into someone who has just been promoted to the Head of Purchasing of that company you’d like to supply. We’ve not yet committed to a totally digital age where we don’t get face-to-face time and I’d bet we probably never will. And if you’d like to see the faces of those who put this magazine together, come and see us at Cologne and Taiwan.

As part of our commitment to the environment, Torque Magazine is fully recyclable.

NEWS News from the distribution industry… www.torque-expo.com

Acquisitions & majority stakes dominate the 2020 headlines ajor investments in the fastener and tools worlds have dominated the news in late 2019 and early 2020. The UK saw one of its major fastener, fixing and tool wholesalers - Harrison & Clough (H&C) – confirm it was selling a major stake in the business. As had been rumoured, Dormole – owner of Forgefix, Toolbank, Olympia and BIZ Tools – took that majority stake

M

in the Keighley-based fastener business. The significant move came after a number of advances by Dormole that have bolstered its position in the tools and fixings sector – most recently, the group acquired Dublin-based Tucks Fasteners & Fixings (in 2018). Michael Brown, MD of Dormoleowned Forgefix, led the discussions and confirmed the H&C management team in Keighley will continue to run the busi-

ness, with the additional backing of the resources of the Dormole Group. The New Year also brought news that Bossard has increased its majority 60% stake in Oslo’s Torp Fasteners to 100%. Bossard first took a stake in Torp in 2015 and the move to take full ownership comes as Bossard aims to expand its presence in branded and highquality engineered products through targeted investments. Torp turns over annual sales of approx CHF nine million and a range that encompasses complex fastening tech made of plastic and rivets, special fasteners and locking devices for various applications. Meanwhile in the US, Pennsylvania’s PennEngineering acquired Tokyobased Eurotec Ltd, a speciality technical reseller of metal fabrication equipment, fastener installation systems and clinch and sheet metal fasteners. Through the acquisition, the Japanese market will have better access to PennEngineering’s PEM and PROFIL fasteners and installation equipment (and vice versa).

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

ESTELA NORIEGA BRALO

Estela Noriega, Marketing Manager at BRALO

BRALO’s Global Marketing Manager Estela Noriega started in journalism before she came to head up the rivet specialist's marketing department. Torque quizzes her on career highlights and for her take on how fastener companies can take a step forward... How did you get into the industry in the first place? I was working as a journalist in a local newspaper in Madrid, but it closed. So, then I applied for a job offer with the communication department of a multinational company. After several interviews, I was asked to join the communication department of Hilti Spain, where I started my career in the industry.

10

torque-expo.com

Here, my knowledge and responsibilities as a marketing and sales professional developed over 15 years in different roles. Especially important over those years was the support of two women; Ms Laura Álvarez, ex-Marketing Director of Hilti Spain, and Ms Bettina Boison, retired Senior Vice President Global E-Business at Hilti AG.

10 12 INTERVIEW Women in Fasteners_TOR041_Feb20.qxp 27/01/2020 16:44 Page 2

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

What kind of work does your department do? As Global Head of Marketing at BRALO, our team manages a great variety of projects and coordinates the marketing activities in the 10 countries where the company is established. Our principal areas of work include brand awareness, product marketing, trade segmented activities, market trends and on and offline communication. What does your day-to-day job involve? I must say that no day is the same as the next. My day-to-day involves planning marketing projects with the team and coordinating with the sales force to plan and execute trade fairs around the globe, of which we went to more than 10 in 2019. I also visit the teams in other countries to align our initiatives, audit the brand image, launch new products, carry out market analysis, and understand the trends in the different industries where BRALO sells its products, such as: automotive, home appliances, renewable energies, building construction and distribution, among others. As a company, BRALO has great technical knowledge of applications through its R&D department which works together with our customers to develop the right solution for every application. My job is also to make sure our customers know about our background and how we can help them to get the fastening solutions they need. What are the best things about working in the industry? For me, the best thing is the contact with customers. Learning about their applications in their different industries gives me a picture of what the future will bring, and a provides constant glance into ongoing innovations. Also, to be part of something tangible, where you see the value you bring to the market, impacting safety or environmental processes, gives me sense to the work I do. Do you have any advice for other women thinking of stepping into the industry? Everyone has to make their own path. But for women in general, and not only in this industry, my advice is to take the

12

torque-expo.com

chances when they are offered, and not to doubt our capacity or ability because we might not have the experience or all the competencies detailed in a job offer, but to look for confidence in ourselves instead. Let’s try and learn during the journey, if the opportunity is one you’ve been wishing for. What would you say to anyone that is put off by a maledominated culture perception? It is not just a perception; it is an inherited reality. Highly responsible positions, such as management committees or boards of directors, have a limited number of positions that no one will voluntarily assign so that female talent obtains its proper representation. However, companies and society are increasingly aware that giving up that talent impoverishes us all, so I would say it is time for companies to take that step forward to train, commit and take responsibility. Can you pick out any particular career highlights or milestones so far? One career highlight was being chosen to lead an international working group with a novel concept in 2012, as the one-to-one marketing was a great challenge. I felt great satisfaction in turn to see that our project was chosen to be implemented into the organisation and that we were able to implement it in five countries in just a month and a half. Other highlights at BRALO include being able to change some working processes to increase productivity, to launch a new website in eight languages, and to try to understand markets as diverse as the Turkish, Mexican and Portuguese, among others. But personally, the best highlight for me is to see the people in my team developing into great professionals. Final thoughts? You cannot be a good professional without being a good person. It is necessary to listen, reach agreements, work honestly and strive to make things a little better every day, while always respecting colleagues and competitors. The way women lead must enrich our companies and our society.

SPOTLIGHT ARMA FIXING SYSTEMS

ARMA CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY The automotive and white goods markets are both key for ARMA Fixing Systems, but the firm also has an expanding reach across different industries and international markets, with an growing product range too. Torque speaks with the business as it celebrates four decades in the business... ith 40 years’ experience across a broad range of industries, ARMA has developed into an international player operating at the top level. The specialist in clamps, clips and brackets has seen some significant market developments since it started out as a mould workshop in an Istanbul district seismic changes like the effect of robotics on production. But ARMA has also seen its own fair share of big changes in the four decades since it opened in a 20 m² workshop in 1980 (see inset, right), not least a new factory which it opened in 2016. ARMA picks up the story: “The factory meant that we had a chance to take part in projects that we couldn't get due to physical deficiencies in our production area. The tooling department and laboratory were enlarged by new investments, while productivity was increased by lean manufacturing techniques that applied to all the production area. “We are now serving as one shift and we have free space of 1,000 m² to expand our capacity.” For those unfamiliar with ARMA, the firm specialises in clamps, clips and brackets which are used as fasteners in all industrial applications, particularly in the automotive and white goods industries, as the firm explains: “In addition we have hose clamps, exhaust clamps and custom-made rubber or without rubber type clamps, which we produce according to DIN 3017-2, completing our diversity in this group. The clips in the second group are used in automotive and white goods applications where the parts are mounted onto the body and are spring-loaded products. “Our company also produces serial production machines that can manufacture these clips in its own structure. In addition to the production of clamps and clips we also produce metal press parts or metal brackets which are used in various sectors. Our company can shape all kinds of metals from 0.1 mm to 4 mm thickness.” Automotive and white goods dominate

W

ARMA’s turnover, the firm explains: “Our products are used for fixing purposes on automotive, home appliance, agriculture, marine, construction, machinery, fluid systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, petrochemicals, air conditioning, generator and radiator industry applications. Our turnover is based 40% in automotive, 30% in white goods and 30% in other sectors.” ARMA’s industrial relationships have seen the development of closer ties with Tier 1 customers, now contributing 30% of business. TRENDS AND OPPORTUNITIES While 2019 was not a vintage year for the global economy, ARMA increased its exports and maintained the same turnover it achieved in 2018: “We completed new projects including metal and plastic fixing elements for automotive applications. For cookers, we designed new spring clips. Specifically, we have received sample approvals from our potential customers about our locking clamp group. We have started to ship serial orders at the end of 2019. “We increased our export rate from 42% to 47% in 2019 and we achieved growth of 10%, especially in the European region. We see new opportunities in the French, UK and Russian markets so we are planning to increase our marketing studies in these areas.” PRODUCTION AND DESIGN SUPPORT As a manufacturer, ARMA says that cheap, poor quality imports are among the challenges it faces, but producing its own goods does afford the firm a number of advantages, including the ability to offer competitive prices to its customers. Likewise, the firm is able to provide short delivery terms for sample manufacturing and - ARMA notes - it has low costs from its own-designed tools, apparatus and machines. As a manufacturer, the ability to provide

// We increased our export rate to 47% in 2019. We see new opportunities in France, the UK and Russia. //

production and design support for customers is a huge benefit too, the firm says: “One of the big advantages is the ability of producing customised products. We can design our own tooling, apparatus and machines according to customer drawings.” Similarly, innovation and R&D is important to the ARMA business too: “Our aim is to produce completely innovative products for our customers. In order to be a successful and differentiating company, we also carry out our R&D and continuous improvement studies in parallel. We create the right system of R&D and innovation and integrate relevant value judgments and working methods into the company. Therefore, we provide innovative solutions in both new products and existing products.” FIXED ON THE FUTURE This year, ARMA will continue to develop its export potential with some show appearances: “As ARMA Fixing Systems, we participate in Fastener Fairs globally. At Fastener Fair Turkey, we will promote our new locking type P clamp products, new metal fasteners and new plastic products. We will also attend two foreign trade fairs in 2020.” The firm reveals that it is planning to invest in the production of ear clamps this year, as well as increase the level of automation in all production lines. Innovation will continue to be leveraged to expand ARMA’s business: “We will focus on working with other OEM and Tier 1 companies that are missing from our customer portfolio. 2019 turnover was €5 million. Our target is a 20% increase for 2020. Our innovative projects will help us to achieve this target. In this way, we aim to be one of the leading manufacturers in both the automotive and white goods sector. We will also increase digitalisation of our processes within the scope of Industry 4.0.”

ARMA Fixing Systems

Stand 656 27-29 February 2020

Four decades old, ARMA now employs 100 staff

ARMA: The first 40 years Arma Fixing Systems was founded in 1980 by Mustafa Adıgüzel as a mould workshop in Bayrampaşa, a district of Istanbul. In those early days, the business had a humble 20 m² footprint. A partnership was then established with his brother Hüseyin Adıgüzel and spare parts production began for the automotive industry. In the following years, the company started to produce fixing parts and sheet metal parts for the white goods sector. In 1988, ARMA produced the first spring clip product for white goods for AUER. Then, it produced its first automotive product for Iveco in 1990 and its first clip production in 1991. The company continued to improve itself, and it produced its first clamping product in 1997. 1997 saw ARMA move to a significantly bigger production area of 300 m² in the İkitelli Organised Industrial Zone, and in 1998 it received its first quality certificate, ISO 9001. As the new century dawned, ARMA hit a series of company milestones; 2000 saw ARMA participate in a domestic show first time. In the same decade, the company started to export and by 2004 attended its first international fair. Just three years later, export rates had already reached 30% thanks to new customers met at foreign trade fairs. ARMA achieved the automotive production-focused ISO/TS 16949 Quality System certificate in 2008. Four years later, ARMA’s covered production area expanded to 1,500 m² and labour power was increased to 70 employees. Also in 2012, a new sales office in Bursa was established to enlarge business in the automotive sector. New factory construction was started in 2014 and was completed in January 2016. In 2018 ARMA completed transition of its quality system to IATF 16949. ARMA Fixing Systems continues to manufacture on a 7,000 m² covered area in Hadımköy, İstanbul with 100 employees.

16 ANNIVERSARY-SPECIAL_Lederer_TOR041_Feb20.qxp 27/01/2020 16:38 Page 1

ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL LEDERER

DON’T START RUSTING IN THE FUTURE EITHER Lederer GmbH, the specialist for fasteners and C-parts management, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The firm, perhaps best known for stainless fasteners, is looking forward as well as acknowledging its past too… 020 is an anniversary year for Lederer GmbH: The specialist for stainless fasteners and standard parts as well as efficient C-parts management is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The family-owned company from Ennepetal has long been one of the market leaders in the industry and is expanding its business with new investments. The company was founded on 2 January 1970 by Rainer Lederer and a business partner. It quickly established itself in the growing market for stainless steel fasteners and increased its number of employees from five to more than 200. Dr Volker Lederer, who is the second generation to lead the AEO-F certified company at its headquarters in Ennepetal, has done so since 2010. The core area was the retail trade business for many years until the industrial sector was established and expanded as a new business area in the 1990s. The Lederer range includes special parts by drawing, manufacturer-specific Cparts, packaging, labelling and assembly, as well as complex logistics and Kanban solutions (also RFID-based).

2

Ahead in digitisation Lederer GmbH is characterised primarily by short response times, a worldwide procurement network and fast delivery. Customers from home and abroad also get the benefit of many years of experience, personal support and sophisticated digital processes. This includes, for example, the use of RFID technology in the field of C-parts management. Thanks to this almost fail-safe and contactless transmission/reception technology, the transmission of requirements in Kanban systems is almost instantaneous, says Lederer, saving time and ensuring more process reliability. In addition, Lederer offers its own online shop with live availability and prices, EDI interfaces and new cloud solutions for customer-specific information and document exchange.

16

torque-expo.com

Accredited test laboratory according to ISO/IEC 17025 The company’s in-house testing department, which is responsible for the standard incoming and outgoing goods inspections, is supported by Lederer’s own ISO/IEC 17025-accredited test laboratory. Complex tests such as tensile tests and salt spray tests are carried out to ensure the highest possible quality level. The results are documented in corresponding test certificates and test reports.

The second generation to run the family business: Dr Volker Lederer

// With an eightfigure investment in the company’s infrastructure, the course for the future has been set. //

Further investments planned With an eight-figure investment in the company’s infrastructure, the course for the future has been set in recent years: among other things, investments have been made in the new building for logistics, packaging and outgoing goods as well as the automatic small parts warehouse, which will provide almost 60,000 locations in the future. The expansion of the automatic small parts warehouse and the conveyor technology means a further increase in capacity and speed in picking and shipping. For Volker Lederer it is clear: “We do not want to start rusting in the future but want to start this anniversary year with concrete further developments.” www.lederer-online.com

SHOW PREVIEW TAIWAN INTERNATIONAL FASTENER SHOW

AN INVITATION TO THE WORLD

ccording to figures from the Taiwan International Fastener Institute, Taiwan exported 1.4 billion tons of fasteners overseas between January and November of 2019, worth over $4 billion in value. Taking the lion share of the exports is the USA (43.85%), which saw imports from Taiwan increase by billions last year amid the ongoing tariff tussle it is embroiled in with China. Meanwhile, the global political and economic landscape grows decidedly more turbulent with new technology pressures and the climate emergency. In the face of this, Taiwan’s fastener industry seems intent on keeping up with the everchanging face of manufacturing; implementing new technologies and processes, adopting an openminded approach to upgrading current practices, and address-

ing its carbon footprint. A perfect storm, it would seem, for the return of Taiwan’s International Fastener Show this year. Taking place 21-23 April at the Kaohsiung Exhibition centre, Asia’s second largest fastener show’s scale has reached a new high this year; expecting more than 432 exhibitors across 1,187 booths and covering a 22,000 m2 exhibition area. And this comes as no surprise, as the strength of Taiwan’s fastener industry is well-known. Potentially prosperous trade opportunities with the US are emerging for Taiwanese companies as a result of President Trump’s aforementioned ongoing trade war with China, and coupled with rapid advancements in automation and Industry 4.0, these factors make the market an increasingly

attractive prospect for firms looking to form and strengthen trading relations with Taiwanese manufacturers. Fastener companies from Germany, Belgium, Spain, Singapore and Hong Kong, among others, have registered for the exhibition, which is expecting over 2,300 international visitors to attend. In 2018, buyers from 73 countries visited the show, indicating its global appeal. To invite more overseas buyers to Taiwan, show organisers TAITRA visited other important fastener exhibitions around the world, including Fastener Fair Stuttgart in March and Fastener Fair USA, in May. TAITRA also invited journalists from international fastener publications (including Torque) out to Taiwan for a production Tour of 10 exhibiting Taiwanese manufacturers. Spanning

The show's Global Fastener Summit provides a platform for networking and discussion Kaohsiung to Taichung, the busy tour schedule gave a comprehensive overview of Taiwan’s fastener industry and the current opportunities and challenges present within it. You can read all about the tour in issue 039 of Torque Magazine. This enhanced degree of internationalisation, TAITRA hopes, will inevitably drive the exhibition’s visibility, strengthen its interaction and exchange of domestic vendors, and help Taiwan’s fastener industry continue its steady development. In addition to the exchanges which will occur during the exhibition, the Global Fastener Summit at the show will also act as an important platform for discussion and networking between attendees. This year, it will focus on the development and innovation of fastener products, explore the application of fasteners in the automo-

tive, aerospace and medical industries, and invite global industry leaders to come to Taiwan to promote the local industry. Furthermore, during the exhibition one-on-one procurement meetings and overseas talent matchmaking meetings will be held to strengthen cooperation opportunities and aid firms in becoming more competitive globally.

// In 2018, buyers from 73 countries visited the show, indicating its global appeal. //

This year, for the first time, an outdoor exhibition area has been announced where various fasteners, screws, nuts, production equipment, tools, moulds, testing equipment and wire-related products will be showcased. The last Fastener Taiwan, which took place in 2018, was visited by a total of 30,000 domestic and international visitors, a 10% increase on the previous show. TAITRA is hoping for yet another increase in visitor numbers as this year’s exhibition approaches. MINI BUT MIGHTY While its geographical size may be dwarfed by the likes of China, the USA and some European nations, Taiwan is a manufacturing giant of substantial might. Torque receives the latest news from firms embedded in Taiwan’s fastener market and takes stock of emerging trends sweeping through the industry…

TAIWAN LARGEST BENEFICIARY OF US AND CHINA TARIFF WAR The so-called ‘tariff war’ between China and the USA is not only causing higher prices for consumers, trade diversion effects and a sharp decline in bilateral trade, but is also economically hurting both countries, according to The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). “The results of the study serve as a global warning,” warned Pamela Coke Hamilton, UNCTAD’s Director of International Trade. “A lose-lose trade war is not only harming the main contenders; it also compromises the stability of the global economy and future growth.”

Although where there are losers there are also winners, and Taiwan’s fastener industry has been privy to some positive outfall from the tariff tussle. Of the $35 billion Chinese export losses in the US market, about $21 billion (62%) was diverted to other countries, with the remained either lost or captured by US producers. Taiwan gained $4.2 billion in extra exports to the US in the first half of 2019, making it the largest beneficiary of the diverted exports. Meanwhile, the EU gained $2.7 billion and Vietnam and India also made export gains.

HOT-ROLLING FOR AEROSPACE AND AUTOMOTIVE WITH YE FONG Aerospace fasteners are parts, but they are an indispensable key component to support and connect the entire aircraft, insists Ye Fong. According to Boeing and Airbus’ forecast, global aircraft demand in the next 20 years will exceed 40,000 aircraft (not including military airplanes and helicopters) and on each of these aircraft are millions of fasteners. Corresponding to the trends of saving energy, reducing emissions and consolidating the competitiveness of airline companies, lightweight aircraft design has become the mainstream trend in the aviation industry. Therefore, the demand for lightweight designs with highstrength aluminium fasteners is going to see a boom in the future, Ye Fong believes. Meanwhile in the automotive industry, nowadays it is an inevitable trend to reduce the weight of vehicles, the firm points out. Not only are the frame, body sheet metal and chassis all developing towards lightweight design, but also more high-end models are becoming aluminium-alloyed for engines and transmissions. Ye Fong’s aluminium wire is hot-rolled instead of a cast-rolled type. The highest application of fasteners manufactured by cast-rolling can only be used for automotive applications and cannot be used within aerospace manufacturing. However, aluminium wire produced by Ye Kong’s hot-rolled method solves the issue of surface segregation layer impurities and non-uniformity grain structure though peeling, shaving, hot-rolling, homogenisation treatment, online eddy current test and other manufacturing processes. This method also provides fastener manufacturers with better machinability and formability, meeting the demand of both aerospace and automotive fastener markets. www.ye-fong.com

THS not only highlights Taiwanese manufacturers’ capabilities of producing top-grade, high-value and diversely customised hardware, but also showcases their flexibility in meeting customers’ production specifications. As the world’s secondlargest exporting country for hand tools, Taiwan’s hardware industry performance is operating at optimum level. Through attending THS, international buyers can establish

mutually beneficial business relationships with local companies to have their hardware products manufactured in Taiwan. Further relevant services will be provided at the show, such as matchmaking, accommodation and travel support, Taichung factory visits, free shuttle services, networking events, seminars, forums and an opening ceremony. www.hardwareshow.com.tw

AUTOMATION, INDUSTRY 4.0 & THE ENVIRONMENT

TAIWAN WELCOMES THE WORLD TO KAOHSIUNG

A recent tour of several Taiwanese companies’ production facilities highlighted notable trends gaining prevalence throughout Taiwan’s fastener industry. On the lips of nearly every company spokesperson were the words ‘Industry 4.0’; in essence, a trend towards automation and data exchange in mechanical and industrial technologies and processes. The likes of Patta Group and Lu Chu Shin Yee have been busy automating their production facilities in order to achieve Industry 4.0; installing robotic arms, automated CNC machining, semi-automatic packing machines and new IoT systems. Meanwhile, protecting the environment has risen rapidly to the forefront of many firms’ agendas; the bringing in of stricter environmental policies in neighbouring China, and pressure on the industrial sector to clean up its act, are likely influencing factors in this trend. Ching Chan Optical technology (CCM) uses solar panels on its factory roof in Thailand to provide power to 500 surrounding homes, while others operate zero-waste policies and increase efficiencies within the manufacturing process. While the global political and economic landscape grows decidedly more turbulent, what with trade wars, new technology pressures and the climate emergency, Taiwan’s fastener industry seems intent on keeping up with the ever-changing face of manufacturing; implementing new technologies and processes, adopting an openminded approach to upgrading current practices, and addressing its carbon footprint.

The global fastener industry will once again descend on Taiwan for its International Fastener Show, taking place 21-23 April in Kaohsiung. More than 420 manufacturers are set to exhibit at the event, which will this year focus on the development and innovation of fastener products, explore the application of fasteners in the automotive, aerospace, and medical industries, and invite global industry leaders to learn more about potential opportunities within Taiwan’s fastener industry.

SPOTLIGHT STAFA GROUP

STEP-BY-STEP WITH STAFA

Torque catches up with Stafa ahead of its appearance at the International Hardware Show at Cologne… amily firm Stafa has been in the fastener business for more than 43 years. Headquartered in Maarheeze, in the Netherlands, Stafa has delivered for projects in more than 50 countries and recently underwent a significant rebrand. Poised to launch a range of new services and products following the brand revamp and the creation of a new webshop, Stafa talks to Torque about its vastly expanded services and just how much the firm has changed in recent years…

F

How’s business in the Netherlands? Business is good; we have seen steady growth. Also in various industries, as we are more and more involved in supplying directly to interesting industries and projects. We are getting better known for the wide variety of services we are able to

30

offer, that really makes the difference in the end. And the people make the difference too - we have a very professional and skilled team. How's business globally? We have also seen steady growth in our most important markets. However, after the summer the peak unfortunately ended… We are hearing the same story from colleague importers, so it is a European thing. Unfortunately we cannot influence the global market too much, if the economy is going down. You’re exhibiting at Cologne’s International Hardware Fair - will you be launching new products or services there? Can you give us any hints? Yes, we are launching our brand new

range of professional drywall screws. They have great packaging and are very good quality products. They have just arrived [at time of print] and we are already selling those at high speed. Furthermore we will be launching our new Kan-Ban department and systems, with a new team, including well-known people in the market. You’ve also got a new webshop launching in 2020 - what kind of features and improvements does that have over the last version? As a company, it is extremely important to continue to develop, not only in good times, but also in less good times. Our webshop had been around for a number of years but was separate from our ERP system. Since we are going to launch a

30-31 SPOTLIGHT_Stafa_TOR41_Feb20.qxp 27/01/2020 16:33 Page 2

sional company. We have so much to offer that different customers sometimes don't know about. In doing so, we remain personal and flexible at all times; we consider this to be extremely important and we will never lose sight of it.

Catch Stafa in Hall 11.2, Stand P021 at Cologne, 1-4 March 2020. completely new ERP system at the beginning of 2020, a new e-shop is also part of this. Everything will be integrated so a change made somewhere is immediately implemented throughout the entire organisation. The new e-shop is equipped with handy filters, which will be familiar to you from the more well-known webshops, and make searching a lot easier. Also, the design of the entire e-shop will be renewed, as will the design of the catalogue. This makes it more logical for customers to find and order things quickly. The layout is also completely up to date, which is not unimportant, and is in line with our new house style. Speaking of which, Stafa had a big rebrand in 2019. What has the reception been like in terms of your customers and also of the wider market? Our new corporate identity has been very well received by everyone, both internally and externally. We are still in the middle of implementing all the different aspects of it across the business. In December 2019, we launched our brand new website and redesigned our leaflets and brochures. We got a lot of positive feedback from these developments. Of course, there are many things that still need to be changed, for instance the new webshop, the signage outside our headquarters and much more. We are doing this step-by-step and we are very proud of the result so far. The rebranding is an important step for us, because we want to establish Stafa more and more as a brand and profes-

Stafa seems focused on working closely with customers and finding innovative solutions for them - is that fair to say? This is certainly true. As a partner, we are increasingly moving up the chain and taking a lot of worries away from our customers. In the past, for example, we only supplied screws for a semi-finished product; nowadays, we give advice on which coating the customer should use in certain circumstances, we take over part of the purchasing and sourcing and we assemble the semi-finished product inhouse and we give advice how the semifinished product can be improved. This is a great help for our customers. People who know us from the past and who haven't been here in a long time often do not believe what they see when they walk in. Of course we are still a real trading company and importer and we will never lose sight of this. Stafa supplies a broad range of sectors, including energy, construction, rail, etc. Have any of those in particular grown in 2019 and do you expect any of the sectors to grow in 2020? A big advantage for us is that our customer base is very diverse. That is why we are never too dependent on certain sectors. At the moment, the construction and automotive industries are of course uncertain; which we also notice, but fortunately we have more than enough work in other sectors. At the moment there are no sectors that really stand out for us. Stafa’s broad range of services includes container shipping - are you seeing an increase in demand for that service? We have been offering this service for nearly 20 years and yes we also see growth here. As we are using our partner factories, and we are very keen on quality packaging and product quality, our customers immediately benefit from this. They get access to an international

network of quality producers. And our clients have no worries about distribution or customs and get global door-to-door order monitoring – anywhere in the world. Container import with Stafa makes importing from the global market accessible to every company. Looking ahead, do you foresee further range expansion for 2020? Or more focus on efficient services... or both? For us the focus will be on efficiency and offering full-service. This is where we excel and we make a difference. We hear an increasing amount about growth in demand for greater sustainability and environmental practices – is that something Stafa is hearing from the market too? As a company, we care about our people and the environment so we do what we can to make the world a better place. We have the following implemented procedures and policies: A Quality Policy Statement, an Environmental Policy Statement, a Health and Safety Policy, Code Of Conduct and we strictly follow the United Nations Global Compact's Ten Principles. What should we be looking out for from Stafa in 2020 and beyond? As already mentioned, we will be launching new services and products. I am sure that with our new rebrand, we are really offering and showing something unique in the market. This will also help us to further grow… and always step-by-step, as we always do at Stafa! Any final thoughts to share with Torque readers? Make sure you check our brand new website, with 3D visuals. It will give a greater picture of where we stand, what we do and what we are able to offer. And that range of services and products may be more than most of your readers might know about. We would be very happy to hear from you or see you at upcoming shows, so we can talk and discuss where we maybe could be of help to you. www.stafa.nl

TECFI CHEMICAL ANCHOR UPDATES & CERTIFICATIONS

Tecfi believes in the advantage of reducing edge distances and spacing, without pre-stressing the base material. As such, Tecfi was among the first to achieve c2 performance category on a styrene free dual component pure epoxy chemical anchor (with threaded rods, M16-M24), according to eTAG001. SWe01 epoxy resin is also eTA-ce certified in Option 1 for cracked concrete (with threaded rods, M12-M24) and Option 7 for non-cracked concrete (with threaded rods, M8-M30), according to eTAG001. SWe01 also achieved Technical Report (TR023) for post-installed rebar connections from Ø 8mm up to Ø 32mm. Tecfi recently attained c2 performance category on DGe02 styrene-free dual component vinylester resin for use with threaded rods from M12-M16 and c1 performance category for use with threaded rods from M12-M20. in addition, DGe02 got eTA-ce for use with rebars from Ø 8mm to Ø 32mm with exposure under fire and in seismic areas. Thanks upgrades, Tecfi customers can now use, in seismic areas, a vinylester chemical anchor with standard and easy-tofind threaded rods or rebars, and not just with very special and expensive anchor rods. On top of that, DGe02 is already certified in eTA-ce Option 1 for use in cracked and non-cracked concrete with threaded rods from M10 to M20 and eTA-ce Option 7 for use in non-cracked concrete with threaded rods from M8-M30. Tecfi has also developed two varieties of vinylester resin, suitable for extreme climates with the same high-grade certifications as DGe02: DGe12, suitable for low temperatures, guarantees a fast curing; DGe22, suitable for high temperatures, guarantees a slow curing. DGe02, DGe12 and DGe22 can be also used in wet

concrete and flooded holes, except for rebars installation and except with seawater. That’s not all; Tecfi has grown its range of vinylester bonded anchors with DGe03, a styrene-free dual component epoxy acrylate vinylester resin that has achieved eTA-ce Option 7 for use in non-cracked concrete with threaded rods from M8 to M16 and rebars from Ø 8mm to Ø 16mm. Previously launched highlights will be present at the show too, including eHe01, a dual component vinylester resin in glass capsule, that achieved the eTA-ce Option 7 certification for noncracked concrete and DGe00, a dual component polyester resin which achieved eTA-ce certification for use in solid masonry. Tecfi’s versatile styrene-free dual compound polyester resin DGe01 is a further highlight from the firm appearing at the show. Tecfi’s whole range of chemical anchors is low VOc/A+ classified, a formulation that allows the use of the resins also in indoor environments. Tecfi offers a wide range of studs for chemical anchors with nut and washer: slotted dog point steel bars in 8.8 grade (range code DAT02), 45° sliced steel studs in 5.8 grade (range code LN01), flat ended steel rods in 5.8 grade (range code DA02), studs with hex shank and double 45° cut in steel (5.8 grade, range code DAf02) and A4-70/AiSi 316 stainless steel (range code DAf72). There are professional hand guns, pumps for hole cleaning and plastic and metallic sleeves too. All Tecfi chemical mortars are suitable for use in concrete are included in the TADS - Tecfi Anchor Design Software. www.tecfi.it

AMBROVIT BLIND RIVETS AND ANCHOR SCREWS THE ITAlIAN distributor of screws and bolts will have a number of its key ranges at the show, including the anchoring concrete screws it launched in 2019. Used widely in different sectors, these anchoring concrete screws allow anchoring of metal or wooden pieces to solid or fissured concrete. These versatile screws can be used in a broad range of categories, including plant engineering, industrial thermohydraulics, pipe mounting and fixing gratings, frames and metal profiles. Ambrovit says its lowcost, high performance screw provides time savings in drilling and screwing, largely thanks to the fact that no dowel is needed, and the anchor can be removed and repositioned. Attachment is also guaranteed near the edges without any danger of compromising structures, Ambrovit says. There are five types available: Anchor screws with a flanged hexagonal, flat countersunk, cylindrical and half-round head. Each type has special patented Trilow threading that facilitates screwing and avoids splitting. The notched tip, at the initial part of the thread, allows quick and clean carving into the concrete. All screws have ETA Option 1 and REI120 fire-resistance

COBRA ANCHORS FLIP TOGGLE LAUNCH

COBRA ANCHORS is a key manufacturer of anchors and hangers in North America. It’s probably a hotly disputed claim, but in the last five years COBRA has - it says - introduced more advanced worldwide patented products than any other anchor manufacturer on the market. The International Cologne Hardware in Cologne will see COBRA introduce one of its latest developments - the Flip Toggle - to the European market. Pitched as a new way of anchoring, the FlipToggle is ideal

AC4504 LOW NOISE COMPRESSOR Does Kyocera Senco’s low noise compressor silence the competition? Peter Brett sounds out another brand new product in Torque Tested…

VERY LARGE compressors are a feature of jobsites in North America where wooden-framed houses are the norm. Often on wheels to make movement easier, and with multiple air lines, they provide nail driving power without the persistent bangs of gas powered nailers. With so many nails to drive it makes sense to use reliable compressed air when you can. However, In Europe and the UK, apart from motor repair shops and some industrial applications, air-power seems to be much less used. Compressors are more likely to found on small production lines in upholstery trades or in the making of fences and sheds. In these functions, compact size and quiet are more valued than sheer power, since even a smallish compressor should provide enough air power for continuous operation. After all, it is mostly just driving small nails and staples into softwood. Market developments, competition and slicker manufac-

LET’S GO WITH ‘COMPACT’ Standing at around 32cm high, 34cm long and 31cm wide, the AC4504 is indeed compact, and impressively so. It is smaller than some of the woodworking tools I routinely use on-site and weighing in at only 11.5kg it falls well below the manual handling limit of 25kg. It is clear that the R and D people wanted the AC4504 to be easy to carry. Centrally placed, with a good centre of gravity for easy lifting and carrying, is a firm and grippy compressed foam handle. The placement of the handle makes it easy to carry without it bumping into your leg as you walk. The AC4504 sits on four little feet and each one has a rubber sucker on it, so it would be possible to stick it down on a smooth surface using suction power. I can only say that when I used it indoors on a smooth wood floor, on concrete in the workshop and balanced on a workbench, I had absolutely no issues with the compressor moving around by itself.

38

SENCO’s AC4504 has a noise level of just 58dB

turing have all combined to make compressors cheaper and more efficient, so it was with a lot of interest that I unpacked the Senco AC4504 compact, low-noise compressor.

QUIET TOO My ears are no doubt desensitised courtesy of military rifle ranges, loud music and machines on the jobsite, but I still don’t like persistent noise – like impact drivers for instance. With an official noise level of 58dB the AC4504 emits a very comfortable burble as it charges the tank – it is by no means intrusive or annoying and I am very impressed - and relieved. Vibration levels are well controlled too. The compressor is mounted onto the base with tall rubberised grommits. Combined with the rubber feet, these may go a long way to explain why the compressor doesn’t suffer with ‘creep’ when it is running.

GET YOUR PRODUCT REVIEWED BY PETER BRETT Brands, companies and wholesalers that are interested in getting their products reviewed in Torque Magazine should contact the editor at Jonathon@torque-expo.com.

SIMPLE TO OPERATE Using a compressor is not expected to be rocket science, but it helps if the controls are logically placed, easy to use and clear. There are two pressure dials to monitor air pressure – one on the tank and the other on the hose outlet to the tool. They both matched up and when I charged the tank and they cut off at exactly the same reading of 120PSI. The dials are placed for maximum visibility, but I think could be vulnerable to careless handling so users might need to be aware. The on/off switch is a big red pull-on, push-off feature that is unmissable and easy to operate. A plastic shield box is used to seal off and protect the switching which is another plus feature. It is always good to note that the hose and tank fittings are of good quality. They get removed often, so need to be able to withstand pressure without leaking, as well as being easy to replace and remove with a positive click. Top marks to the AC4504 again on this one.

AIR MATTERS By defining itself as a ‘compact’ compressor, the AC4504 will have a small air tank – in fact, quite a respectable 4 litre capacity. The cylindrical shape fits the design criteria and is well placed for ease of use and maintenance. I mostly used the compressor with a medium-sized nail gun – admittedly one around twenty years old, and I had no problems firing sequences of nails. The compressor had to stay on to cope with the rate at which the air was being used, but the nails were over 50mm long and I was firing into a piece of thick ash plank. The 0.33hp pump compresses 28 litres per minute at 6Bar which is very respectable for such a compact compressor. Bearing in mind that the AC4504 is more likely to be used in second fix applications and light manufacturing, where the maximum nail sizes would be around 25 to 35mm long I might have been pushing its envelope a bit. I never had the impression that the compressor was struggling – it simply kept up its steady burble and delivered the air as required.

LOTS TO LIKE Cordless tools provide a lot of competition to compressor power these days and there is nothing wrong with that. What air power can provide is cheap, ‘green’ power that is quieter and very manageable. The air tools - like nailers and sanders, are often cheaper to buy, more compact, mechanically simpler and therefore more reliable and longer lasting than battery powered counterparts. If I were nailing fence or shed panels, the quiet power and lighter tools would make for a quieter and less muscle stressing day. It makes investigating the use of air power a sensible thing to do.

PART OF THE RANGE Users might also like to know that Senco’s low noise range of compressors consists of seven machines ranging in size and quiet from 58dB to 78dB. Even though the bigger machines have wheels and a couple of air hose outlets, these oil free compressors are smart and modern and would make a good upgrade for a workshop or site. I was impressed with the AC4504’s compact size, quiet operation and easy, oil-free maintenance. If ever there was a machine to make you consider using compressed air power this might be it. www.kyocera-senco.co.uk

BESTSELLERS KNIPEX

Identifying products that shift is key for merchants, distributors and retailers. Torque doesn’t have a crystal ball and can’t tell you what is going to be a big seller in the next 12 months, so we did the next best thing and quizzed Knipex for its top three sellers of the past year

1

PLIERS WRENCH The KNIPEX Pliers Wrench range replaces the need for sets of metric and imperial spanners. Smooth jaws allow for damage-free installation of plated fittings – meaning users can work directly on chrome. The pliers are also excellent for gripping, holding, pressing and bending workpieces. By simply pushing the button, users can make an adjustment on the workpiece. The zero backlash jaw pressure prevents damage to edges of sensitive components. Parallel jaws give a solid grip with a reliable catching of the hinge bolt so there is no unintentional shifting. The ratchet type principle allows quick and easy tightening and release of all bolted connections, says KNIPEX, while its lever transmission is greater than 10:1 for very strong gripping power. It now comes in a slimmer 180mm length (86 01 180), with narrow gripping jaws – perfect for tightening in confined spaces. This makes it even easier to use thanks to considerably reduced weight, fluted handle and a slim jaw profile with undercut.

2

3

COBRA

COBOLT COMPACT BOLT CUTTER

Substantially lighter than comparable pipe wrenches, the KNIPEX Cobra range of water pump pliers have significant capacity and are available in lengths 125mm to 560mm. The Cobra pliers are self-locking and will not slip on the pipe, nut or joint being worked on, so there’s no time consuming trial and error to find the correct setup of the plier. They can be directly adjusted on the workpiece – simply position the upper jaw, push the button and slide the lower jaw closed. Reliable catching of the hinge bolt prevents unintentional shifting. Like the snake that gave the range its name, Cobra teeth grab the item firmly. Specially hardened to approx 61 HRC, that grip is long-lasting.

Boasting high cutting performance in a convenient length of 160mm, these cobalt bolt cutters are pitched as ideal for cutting nails, bolts and rivets in tight areas, these pliers feature a lever action mechanism which provides a cutting performance 30 times higher than the hand force applied. They feature a heavy duty, inductionhardened cutting edge for thin, hard wire, screws and springs with material slippage thanks to its lasered cutting edge.

DISTRIBUTOR PROFILE

D&M TOOLS > DOING IT RIGHT Experience and know-how are key… Peter Brett visits tools superstore D&M Tools in West London and quizzes MD Paul Dowding on selling techniques, training, staff retention... and the pitfalls of being ‘busy fools, selling loads of tools’ s I write, Debenhams is closing premises, Mothercare is history, and the gaps made by empty shops in the high streets are like missing teeth in what used to be a cheerful smile of prosperity. Clearly, running a successful bricks-and-mortar shop is a challenge, but some are still doing it. The case in point is the D and M Tools Superstore in West London. D and M is a family-run business with Managing Director Paul Dowding at the helm, that is successfully bucking the trend. I was very keen to have the opportunity to have an extended chat with him because, with his encyclopaedic knowledge of all aspects of the tool industry, I would be better able to understand what it takes to cut it on the high street. Our conversation was not a bullet point presentation of the type that a marketing executive might be proud of, but a guided ramble that merged subject boundaries, drew on knowledge gathered by long experience, and a shrewd understanding of business, tools, social media, judgement and what the customers want. It is the sort of knowledge that makes decision making intuitive, based on many things rather than a few. Forget binary, think complicated – and successful.

A

42

Even small things count On the way in, I noticed the staff uniforms, so I started our chat with a casual remark about them. Paul quickly gave me a fiveminute rundown of the decision making behind the uniform choices. A uniform could be imposed by the management, but at D and M the needs and desires of the staff for a comfortable, practical and easy-to-care for uniform that reflects the seasons is part of the equation. The corporate look is important too, as the clothes have to be smart, but as it also needs to take into account different roles in-store, staff are given the opportunity to try on the clothing choices before a final decision is made. Apparently, even customers comment favourably on the consistency of the D and M ‘Brand Identity’ – so it must be an effective strategy. From company livery, it is but a short step to the discussion about staff recruitment and retention. Paul insists that it is about recruiting the ‘right people’ in the first place. While it may help a candidate to have some knowledge of tools, what is much more important, is a commitment to excellent customer service – going the extra mile to ensure that customers are fully satisfied

with their treatment and purchases. A new team member is given six months to prove their customer service skills. Training about the tools can come later Paul says, because good customer service is something that is much harder to teach, if indeed it is possible. Flexibility and recognition of peoples’ other commitments is a great help in retaining loyal staff, as is the post-show thank-you meal in October. D and M remains a family-run company though, with the third generation of family members working in various roles. Something must be working, because the 24 members of staff have a minimal turnover and many are veterans of 20 or more years of service. Paul relates the lesson he learnt from his father when he worked in the family plumbing supplies business as a 17-year old. A regular ‘old-school’ customer would come in and demand service and then verbally deliver a list of plumbing part numbers instead of descriptions. Once, Paul asked his dad to serve the customer because the stress suffered by his teenage self of dealing with him was considerable. His dad refused, saying that “anyone can deal with an easy customer,” Learning to deal with the difficult ones was a much better lesson in the skills needed in retail.

EPOS software combined with decades of experience feed into the vital restocking process

At the coal face Further ramblings took us to the discussion of how staff can best help customers with purchases. There is no commission scheme, so staff are encouraged to recommend the ‘best tool for the job’ based on what the customers tell them they need. The standard advice from anyone who knows tools is also to ‘buy the best tool you can afford’, and to remember that ‘buying cheap can mean buying twice’. The wisdom here is that good purchases will be remembered and encourage customers to return. Comprehensive product knowledge gives credibility, and staff are encouraged and trained to become product champions in six to eight areas. Most new product training is given by tool company reps in the room provided at D and M because it is the most efficient way of doing it. A deserving recruit who has completed the trial period, may get the perk of travelling, for example, to Mafell (or others) in Germany for a few days. This indepth training is incentivising and a break from the usual routine. What is certain is that D and M staff are on an almost constant learning curve, developing product knowledge and experience in recommending the right tool for the job. Internet prices may be cheaper, but expert advice is not included.

// There is no commission scheme, so staff are encouraged to recommend the ‘best tool for the job’ based on what the customers tell them they need. // Buying... and the complex process of selling IT has a huge role to play in ensuring that D and M can be as efficient and quick as possible. Years ago, the company commissioned a bespoke IT system that is regularly updated. The EPOS software is used for restocking smaller and regularly sold stock items with minimal supervision. But buying the more valuable stock, like power tools, is done by Paul himself. He is an expert, after 40-something years, in navigating the complicated deal struc-

tures on offer. Again, there is no formula for buying. Knowledge and experience combine with a shrewd understanding of the tools, customers’ needs, pricing, time of year and the level of stocks needed: all come into the equation. It is clearly not just a case of ‘grabbing the cheapest deal’. Watching the waxing and waning fortunes of suppliers is another complex skill that experience and knowledge feed into. Paul does not want to end up with stocks that “nobody wants to buy at any price”. Change is inevitable and making sure that D and M is on top of the changes is one of the keys to success. Paul has a few mottos like “knowledge and stock are key” and the value of “good staff treated well” that sound quite straightforward. A motto can be just a motto, but to make it work it has to be honestly applied and Paul has the experience, intent and knowledge for the it to be truly meaningful. For him, there is simply no point in being “busy fools selling loads of tools” for less than they cost. TEST > LAUNCHES HIGH-PRECISION TESTING MACHINE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS For customers in the field of dentistry, German manufacturer TesT GmbH has developed a special torsion testing machine which examines the screwing-in of dental implants. The torqueinducing shaft rotates with a concentricity accuracy of only a few microns. Dental implant manufacturers are experimenting with differing surface roughness and various coatings to achieve greater fastening strength and durability in the bone and to improve healing of the bone. In their test series, implant bodies are screwed into artificial bones in order to monitor the torques of the self-tapping thread. With the related software, the testing machine can be individually programmed via USB on any standard PC or laptop, tests can be evaluated, and test reports can be generated. All electronics are integrated in the tabletop case. The new machine from the 210-series applies a torque of up to 10 Nm with a maximum rotational speed of 100 rpm, but up to 3000 rpm can be realised in this size. On a single machine, several torque transducers with different measuring ranges can be used interchangeably, automatically recognised by the software. They can be moved axially on the slide by 500 mm as standard. Up to 2000 mm is possible. The guiding is done on high-precision linear guides which guarantee coaxiality, concentricity and axial runout between torque introduction and torque measurement of only a few µm. An only torque-transmitting force support protects the transducers against disturbing influences. This means that even heavy test pieces or collets can be used. So, what are the special features of the custom-made device? The machine has three different transducers with the nominal torques 10 Nm, 5 Nm and 1 Nm, each with an accuracy class of 0.1, enabling it to measure torques of a minimum of 0.02 Nm

with an error of 0.1% using the smallest transducer. According to the engineers involved, even smaller measuring ranges can be achieved. In this particular design, it is feasible to introduce axial forces in both directions by using weights with repeatably high accuracy at low cost. In addition, there is a lockable slide with a probe for measuring the axial displacement with an accuracy of +- 1 µm. Last October, the family business - based in Erkrath, Germany - celebrated its 25th anniversary. Since its foundation in the nineties, TesT has evolved into one of the leading manufacturers of universal testing machines. +49 211 209903-0 +49 211 209903-201 test@test-gmbh.com TesT’s latest torsion testing machine has several torque transducers with different measuring ranges

DORMET PRAMET > NEW BURRS TARGET DEMANDING APPLICATIONS Dormer Pramet has expanded its line of carbide burrs with new tools for machining superalloys and bolt removal. The alloy specific range has been designed to meet the most demanding metal finishing needs in nickel and titanium alloys. With an advanced cutting geometry, the alloy specific (AS) burrs support high performance grinding and a smooth, controlled cutting action for a consistent high-quality surface finish. This makes the range suited for deburring and chamfering in maintenance, repair and overhaul applications, in industries such as aerospace and power generation. With nine different shapes available, the AS burrs achieve a faster cutting action with high stock removal and is included in a new set (P88006) which features a variety of styles. Meanwhile, Dormer Pramet has launched a new range of burrs specifically designed to prepare the clean removal of broken bolts, without damaging the threaded hole or the component. Suitable for automotive repair shops and maintenance applications, the new burrs are available in plain cylinder with end cut and 150° countersink cut styles. A variety of diameters and cutting lengths cater for different thread sizes, with long reach and tapered shank designs for easy access. A specially developed cutting geometry supports the grinding of case-hardened threads and maximises the potential for drilling on the centre.

The new addition supports Dormer Pramet’s existing assortment of burrs for steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous material, plastic, fibreglass, composites and general machining. www.dormerpramet.com

TORQUE FOCUS MACHINES AND TOOLING

REINHARDT > FURNACE TECHNOLOGY IN THE INDUSTRY 4.0 ENVIRONMENT Reinhardt Managing Director Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Bosch & Reinhardt Technical Sales Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Sven-Michael Tolksdorf share their insights into the cutting edge of heat treatment... einhardt GmbH is a competent worldwide partner in the construction of industrial furnaces, heat treatment systems, coating systems and slush moulding systems. A medium-sized company headquartered in the Black Forest town of VillingenSchwenningen, Reinhardt GmbH is one of the global market leaders for thermotechnical solutions in temperature ranges up to 650 °C in the areas of industrial furnaces and heat treatment, coating and slush moulding systems. In the plastics sector, the systems are used for preheating, drying and tempering, but also for conditioning and humidifying. Reinhardt’s products are characterised by significantly higher demands on the accuracy of the systems, which is achieved by means of appropriate design measures and high-quality measurement technology. For decades, it has been common practice to document thermotechnical processes. At first, this was done using mechanical-electrical recorders. Paper printouts were often simply enclosed with the batch and filed away by order. Later, the storage medium changed – floppy disk, USB stick etc. – but the basic principle did not change fundamentally. Over the years, customer requirements and expectations have continued to increase, with medical and pharmaceutical technology in the vanguard. Today, these higher customer requirements with respect to traceability and temperature accuracy are common in all industrial sectors, and furnace systems must therefore also meet these customer requirements. Examples include the AMS 2750 in the aerospace industry or CQI-9 in the automotive sector. One security aspect that is often also discussed is prevention of the manipulation of data, which must be implemented with an adequate level of security, whether by means of intrinsic data encoding or secure processes. For company and production control, it must be possible to view and document all relevant production parameters anytime

R

46

torque-expo.com

Requirements to document processes have become more stringent and detailed over the decades and anywhere. Orders or product batches are tracked as they pass through production and it is possible to see centrally where and how an operation was carried out at any time during the manufacturing process. This form of automated batch data acquisition is most easily seen in the identification of batches with scanners before each process, which again checks the processes and, with intelligent control, identifies which process is to be carried out in the subsequent operation. These three requirements became relevant to the idea of Industry 4.0 years ago. According to Wikipedia, “industrial production should be dovetailed with modern information and communication technology”. As far back as the early days of BITNET at the beginning of the 1980s, the focus was on data exchange or remote access, which at that time was simply described USING FTP (file transfer protocol), SMTP and Telnet. More than 20 years ago, we asked ourselves why chat and

other forms of communication were possible on the internet, while a connection to a machine was established point-to-point in the old-fashioned way using a modem. In the meantime, security issues have arisen, with access to a control system now encrypted via a VPN connection. As a system manufacturer, we face a special challenge: not only does an interface have to be provided to our customers, but also within the machine or system itself. Frequently, competing fieldbus systems are used because the components we use are assigned to a wide range of different industries: CAN for components from the automation industry, Profibus / Profinet or Modbus from the process and automation engineering sector. We therefore also integrate across industries. The decision as to whether individual components are then connected in the traditional way via digital or analogue inputs, or via a bus interface, depends on the frequency of use and the amount of data exchanged.

REINHARDT CONTROLLERS OFFER THESE FEATURES > Continuous condition monitoring and data storage

Automatic backup of data on your computer system / backup system Individual recording of data (short and long-term storage)

Continuous remote monitoring of machines Remote control of machines

Simple operation via internet browser as web HMI or local HMI on IPC panel Simple networking via your intranet/Ethernet

The system as a whole should not be made unnecessarily complicated. In the networking of company and production control, the individual machines or industrial systems, which also include the thermotechnical systems provided by Reinhardt GmbH, are connected with an ERP system (enterprise resource planning), which today goes far beyond the concept of any PPS (production planning system). Given the heterogeneous hardware structure, it is essential that platform-independent, serviceoriented architecture such as OPC UA is used. The goal of standardisation is to reduce the time and effort spent on communication, making more time available for the selection of information. OPC UA uses only a single protocol, which can be used for all data in the production process. It is independent of both platform and manufacturer. Security mechanisms are already integrated. All components from individual sensors to the ERP system can be in communication. The basis for this is a client-server principle. An important aspect is that the data fits into the ERP system. For example, only a good/bad message and certain benchmark temperatures and treatment times are transferred to the ERP system. The actual temperature trends, which are more complex and cumbersome to embed in an ERP system, are stored separately, in most cases via an email distributor or FTP. With these tools, the mechanical engineering sector is fit for Industry 4.0. We have been using this for years – our

controllers have an Ethernet connection, making all of the possibilities of this worldwide linking possible. All technically feasible adaptations in the control technology can be implemented, in order to facilitate processes and handling at the subsequent place of use. In addition to integration into a higher-level PLC, the systems themselves are equipped with a PLC. This enables remote control, remote monitoring and the documentation of peripherals over the intranet or internet. Data acquisition/storage – directly or over the internet – can be optimised to each customer’s requirements. Warnings and error messages are available anywhere in the world via GSM networks or e-mail. If required, third-party devices can also be integrated.

Within our systems, time-critical and noncritical functions are separated, whereby a cycle time of less than 10 msec is normally sufficient for time-critical functions. These result from switching and reaction times for sensors and switching outputs. Functions that are not time-critical can be easily handled using local Ethernet connections. A reading of the current literature shows that this distinction will also be a decisive factor in the future, whereby the decision is newly framed within the protocol, so that multiple networks are no longer necessary. As a basic principle, we offer a proven and flexibly expandable complete system. With adapted technology, the system can be adapted to a wide variety of different requirements. www.reinhardt.gmbh

TORQUE FOCUS RIVETS & RIVET TOOLS

WHAT’S NEW IN RIVETS? Torque rounds up the latest innovations in the rivets and rivet tools sector, encompassing blind rivets, leakage prevention and Bulge Control Technology…

GESIPA Gesipa has developed its new blind rivet PolyBulb® with special geometric features suited to joining particularly sensitive, porous and pressure-sensitive materials. The PolyBulb has proven particularly successful in the automotive industry, where it is used to join sensitive

Gesipa’s PolyBulb blind rivet

composite materials when fixing loudspeakers. Due to a large closing head diameter, the pressure on sensitive materials is distributed in an optimum and gentle way, meaning that in many applications C-parts such as washers are no longer needed. Additionally, the closing head protruding the drilling hole protects the rivet from being pulled out of the application. The locked mandrel keeps the joint safely together even when exposed to high loads and prevents rattling noises. The PolyBulb also has a large grip range to suit materials of different thicknesses. According to Gesipa, blind riveting offers two decisive benefits: firstly, the worker only needs access to one side of the workpiece which makes the setting process a lot easier, resulting in sustainable cost savings; and secondly, the application and material to be joined together are not influenced by thermal exposure. www.gesipa.de

EFC INTERNATIONAL Fastening and assembly in lightweight materials creates many challenges, with composite materials requiring unique methods of fastening that do not require high forces and temperatures. The BBA Blind Rivet Nut offered by EFC goes some way to meeting these challenges, allowing flexibility with strength and corrosion resistance. BCT® (Bulge Control Technology) allows the rivet nut to install quickly, clamp into material without any radial expansion in the hole and control the collapse to ensure there is no damage to the material. Weight is reduced significantly when producing BCT rivet nuts from aluminium for use in aluminium and magnesium. In areas using advanced high strength steel, the BBA Ultra Series Rivet Nuts can reach Torque level adequate to break a Grade 12.9 bolt with torque. Using high strength steel materials, the cold forming

process yields a very strong fastener, while allowing proper installation with conventional rivet nut tools. www.efc-intl.com

TR FASTENINGS Following a successful proposal, TR Fastenings was appointed by automotive manufacturer and Tier 1 supplier, Faltec Europe, to provide a bespoke fastening for a new major programme it had secured with a key global OEM. The trim product to be developed was an injection moulded exterior trim part for a new vehicle due for release in November 2019. A late change to improve the fit of the part to the vehicle required the attachment of a strengthening support via a Peel type rivet, designed to offer improved support in brittle, soft or ductile materials. Fired using bespoke tooling, the head of the Peel rivets explode and become mushroom-shaped as they enter the moulding. This creates a large blindside bearing surface, significantly reducing the risk of the rivet sinking into or breaking the moulding. TR was able to identify the original equipment source and submit a competitive supply solution. Not only could TR provide the specific fastener solution, but in this instance was also able to supply bespoke tooling compatible for the fastener; a bespoke rivet gun that would not only automatically fire the rivets into the moulding to be joined, but also have capability to apply rivets in a fast production environment. As full service was of utmost importance to TR, its engineers visited Faltec several times, initially to explain how the rivet gun would operate and then to train staff in appropriate use and safety. The company provided ongoing support throughout the initial trial phase and was asked to assist in technical evaluation ready for onsite production at Faltec. Greg Lynch, Automotive Business Development Manager at TR, comments on the project: “TR Fastenings want to be the first point of contact for Faltec’s ongoing fastener requirements and business development, so providing a first-class service and gaining trust from Faltec Europe was of paramount importance to us. Being an active member of the North East Automotive Alliance has enabled good business networking opportunities with new and existing customers.” Following the success of this project TR has been nominated to supply serial production, cementing its ongoing relationship with Faltec.

OPINION CORROSION

FIGHTING CORROSION – FOR THE ENVIRONMENT’S SAKE

The global cost of corrosion exceeds US$2.5 trillion annually, or three percent of global GDP. Moreover, the environmental consequences are enormous. BUMAX’s Nimeka de Silva and Patrik Lundström Törnquist explain how innovative premium high-strength and highperformance stainless steel fasteners offer significant benefits – from product and asset infrastructure maintenance to total lifecycle costs – in many global industry sectors...

etallic corrosion is the result of electro-chemical interaction between a metal and substances present within its operating environment. Corrosion results in degradation of that material, to the point where it is no longer mechanically or structurally fit for purpose. Corrosion presents a formidable global challenge. It affects many everyday products and almost all infrastructure – through increased maintenance, shorter product lifecycles, end-of-life management and generally the overall utilisation of more resources over a product’s lifetime. The economic and environmental impact is significant, and it is high time to place the fight against corrosion in a proper sustainability context. The International Measures of Prevention, Application and Economics of Corrosion Technology (IMPACT) study by NACE estimates the global cost of corrosion to be US$ 2.5 trillion annually – equivalent to around three per cent of global GDP in 2018. However, it also estimates that existing corrosion control practices could save 15-35 percent of the cost of corrosion, equating to between US$ 375 and US$ 875 billion globally each year (NACE International, 2016).

M

CORROSION IMPACTS HEAVILY ON THE ENVIRONMENT The consequences of corrosion-related impacts on the environment are not included in this study but are increasingly

54

important. In response to greater interest in issues related to environmental impact and sustainability, engineers are ever more encouraged to design products and infrastructure that can minimise negative environmental and societal impact. Sustainability in design, optimising a product’s lifecycle, minimising maintenance requirements and end-of-life upcycling/recycling for example are all becoming an important part of product performance, quality and overall cost. In future, it is very likely that we will see even more burden placed on product manufacturers and asset infrastructure owners towards end-of-life management, so making early considerations in the design and planning stage will become a more crucial aspect of engineering. Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) are becoming ever more important for any product or project from both a customer and regulator perspective. MORE ROBUST AND COST-EFFECTIVE FASTENER SOLUTIONS Stainless steel fasteners have long been used in corrosive environments, such as within the oil & gas industry, chemical processing, marine and coastal applications. In recent years, stainless steel materials, predominantly austenitic grades A2 (304) and A4 (316), have become more readily available, largely due to low-cost high-volume Asian manufacturers. However, interest in premium stainless steel and high-

grade alloy fasteners has really taken off. Within the correct application, they offer improved product performance, reduced maintenance and can help to maximise the product lifecycle. Considering total lifecycle costs can help to deliver significant cost efficiencies over the lifespan of a product, rather than an approach focusing purely on the initial upfront cost. Particularly in more technical industries where performance, safety and reliability are all critical factors, engineers are now starting to give more consideration to an everincreasing range of fastener products and material options available to them, in an attempt to design more robust and long-term cost-effective products and infrastructure. TRADITIONAL FASTENER CHALLENGES FOR ENGINEERS One of the traditional limitations accepted by engineers when considering the use of stainless steel materials, is reduced mechanical strength compared with high tensile carbon steel. If a combination of high strength and corrosion resistance was required, then engineers may often resort to the use of high tensile carbon steel with an additional protective coating. However, high tensile carbon steel brings with it the burden of finding a coating suitable for the application and the associated performance, quality and lifespan considerations for the coating. High tensile carbon steels are also prone to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement as a result of their manufacturing process. Engineers often express concerns regarding this risk and careful consideration should always be given during their production. THE SOLUTION – CORROSION RESISTANCE AND HIGH STRENGTH Enter premium high corrosion-resistance stainless steel fasteners. These are products that combine the corrosion resistance capabilities of different stainless steel material grades, with the strength of high tensile carbon steel (such as the BUMAX DX 129 range). In addition, ductility and fatigue properties are also considerably better, outperforming high tensile carbon steel. By eliminating the limitations of strength in stainless steel materials, these premium fasteners open up new possibilities for design engineers that require a combination of high mechanical performance and corrosion resistance. Applications for these premium stainless steel fasteners include aerospace, offshore equipment, steel construction, high-end electric bikes, high pressure applications, fueling systems and semiconductor manufacturing equipment – all with excellent results. Many more applications may follow, to the benefit of not only the owners and users of products and infrastructure – with higher quality, reduced maintenance and longer lifespans – but also the entire planet with the potential for the more sustainable use of material resources. www.bumax-fasteners.com

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION WOOD & DECKING SCREWS

A NEW SET OF THREADS Expert opinion on the market, behind the scenes on cutting edge innovation and brand new screws are all featured in this wood, chipboard and decking screw round-up… EUROTECH GMBH > DECKING SCREWS

Building patios has never been so easy, according to Eurotec, which now has the screws for every construction project in the garden thanks to a wide product range. Terrassotec and Terrassotec Trilobular are the allrounders among Eurotec's decking screws. The special head reduces the chip placement and the milling ribs on the shank ensure easy countersinking in all types of wood. The special screw geometry of the Terrassotec Trilobular offers further advantages. The trilobular base geometry considerably reduces the risk of screw breakage when screwing in and the screwing torque. Among the newer additions to the Eurotec decking screw range is the Tri-Deck-Tec. It is a screw specially developed for fixing WPC decking boards to WPC or wooden substructures. The screw features an extra-reinforced shaft, an under-head thread running in the opposite direction and a tapered head with TX drive. The new decking screw is made of hardened stainless steel and can be purchased with coloured screw heads for WPC decking. It’s not just the design of the Tri-Deck-Tec that offers advantages: Due to its composition, the splitting effect during screwing is reduced, while at the same time the drive thread ensures quicker screwing in. The under-head thread of the screw also provides an additional hold for the decking board. In 2020, Eurotec is committed to continue working on innovations in the decking and horticultural sector and to provide its customers with new quality products. Further information on decking screws and similar products can be found at... www.eurotec.team/en/products/deck-constructionand-landscaping

HECO > FINDING THE RIGHT SCREW INTUITIVELY Schramberg-based screw specialist HECO has redesigned its POS material, with a new shelf concept creating an even clearer display of HECO products for specialist dealers and fastener installers. The new retail shelf with colour coding system makes it easy to find the right screw for any application, intuitively and quickly. Searching the shop for suitable screws can be frustrating and time consuming. That is why HECO decided to provide a better overview at the point of sale. A table on the new ‘shelf stoppers’ indicates which type of screw is suitable for which application. It covers more than 30 areas of application, ranging from timber construction through fitting attachment to the assembly of façade timbers and push-pull props. The clearly arranged product display on the shelf stoppers makes it easier for dealers to advise customers and for customers to find the products they are looking for. For better orientation, there are also colourcoordinated strips below the scanning rails. The colour coding of each respective screw family guides the eye quickly to the desired pack on the shelf. As the colour concept is also used in the HECO product catalogue, the right fasteners can be found much more quickly. Flexibility for the specialist trade Initial attention in-store and good visibility is generated by a HECO magnetic board or optionally, a HECO light box with power supply over the shelves, which allows the prominent placement of individual products or promotions. Dealers with their own shelving systems have the option to request individual templates as an alternative. These are available for light boxes as well as magnetic boards, either with a neutral HECO brand motif or with a special product motif. www.heco-schrauben.com

HEXSTONE > VARIETY AND THE GROWTH IN BRANDED PRODUCT SALES IN THE WOOD SCREW MARKET Ian Doherty > CEO, Hexstone Limited “When I think of woodscrews, the word that pops into my mind is variety! Whilst I am sure that any one user may only use at most a few tens of products, at Hexstone we stock, and sell, over 750 individual woodscrew products. When all of the configurations - box, bag, tub, clam and assortment case are taken into account, it’s closer to 1,000 individual products. If you were to add in the offerings of our competitors in the UK, the number must be staggering. “Whilst the variety of sizing is a driver in this wide range, price versus performance does seem to produce the classic ‘good, better, best’ profile in products. On top of that, application – internal or external, hardwood, softwood or manufactured boards all impact, as do screw materials, finishes, and drive choices. “Brands are increasingly important; at Hexstone, growth in sales of branded woodscrews has easily outstripped growth in more generic products. This is at least partly due to the focus of innovation behind the brands. Last year we launched TX drive in our popular mid-range Vortex screws and will follow in 2020 with a Vortex exterior range. The Philips Ulti-Mate II® range we distribute will also extend with the Multi-Board Screw, specifically designed for top performance in MDF, chipboard and plywood.

KWANTEX’S NEW DRIVE Kwantex is launching a new drive – the TTX™ Drive. The company has slightly modified the design of the traditional TX drive, so TTX™ Drive provides more torque transfer, the least wobbling and eliminates camout slippage, says the firm. Kwantex has also developed the TTX™ bit to fit with TTX™ Drive. The test times (tested until the bit breaks) is at least four times more than traditional TX bit, the firm says, so the life expectancy is much better. TTX™ Drive is suitable for all kinds of screws and it will bring a new feature to screws. The fitting quality is different from a traditional TX drive and it will impress customers, the firm says. Interested parties are welcome to visit the site and contact Kwantex: www.kwantex.com.tw

“In this crowded market, I am sure there is still room for further genuine innovation that demonstrably meets enduser needs. We are all acutely aware of the green agenda; many screws have energy-saving claims on being able to put more screws in for the same battery usage. However, the biggest impact lies in the material used to make the screws. Roughly two tonnes of CO2 is created for every tonne of steel produced. I suspect the real environmental innovation challenge for woodscrews is how to maintain performance and strength whilst using less steel.” www.hexstone.co.uk

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION S&P SOFTWARE CONSULTING

EARTHQUAKEPROOFING Structural design of mounting systems subjected to seismic loads: Regions that are susceptible to earthquakes present a specific set of challenges to planning engineers and manufacturers of mounting systems. Software solutions can help make the challenge more manageable, writes Dr.-Ing. Mirko Neumann...

arthquakes are exceptional incidents. Compared to other natural phenomena like storms or floods they are scarcer and are more difficult to forecast. The main reason for the occurrence of earthquakes is the tectonic movement of lithospheric plates, especially if they collide or glide along one another. This is connected with plate interlocking and tilting, thus leading to stress in the rock strata. Once the shearing strength of the rock is exceeded the tensions discharge by abrupt movements of the plates and tectonic earthquakes are the result. However, earthquakes may occur due to human actions also. These anthropogenic earthquakes may be the result of mining, the

utilisation of geothermal heat, or the extraction of fossil oil or gas. In order to protect buildings and to minimise the danger to life and limb, the structural engineer has to take measures in order to build endangered structures earthquake-proof. The principal approach is to apply additional loads derived from idealised seismic waves to the structure. There are various codes in existence which enable the planning engineer to specify regions prone to earthquakes (see figure 1) and which include structural verifications to ensure seismic safety, e.g. EC 8 (Europe), GB 50011 (China), or ASCE 7 (USA). These verifications are usually very detailed when it comes to reinforced concrete or massive steel structures. They are rather general when thin-walled open profiles are to be considered and virtually non-existent if these profiles contain cross-sections weakened by round and oblong holes like in mounting rails (see figure 2). Since the holes reduce all cross-section values important for the structural analysis not only regarding seismic loads their influences have to be taken into account. The most exact way of mathematically considering the weakening of the cross-sections would be the modelling of the whole mounting structures by FEM. However, this method is by far the most complex and elaborate way and not suitable for daily analyses of complex mounting systems. It would be much better if there was a simpler way to take the crosssection weakening into account. A suitable way is to reduce the thickness of the profile in the hole area by the ratio of the outer surface of the whole profile to the area of all holes in the profile. For common mounting rails this ratio computes to about 0.5, which means that the thickness of the profile in the hole area is to

be reduced by 50% (see figure 3). Even though there are of course additional ways to take the holes into account this method is very easily applicable and leads to reasonable results, as different studies show. With these adapted cross sections, the seismic analysis can be carried out. First Figure 3 of all, the seismic Reduced profile thickness by loads have to be 50% in the upper round and obtained according oblong hole area to the respective code the structure has to be designed with. After calculating the cross-section values using the method described above the verification of the members of the structure can be carried out. Usually the additional horizontal seismic forces pose a problem. Especially suspended mounting systems are not designed to carry significant horizontal loads. Scientific studies show that it is often more efficient to introduce additional supporting structures

Figure 4 Suspended mounting system with diagonal cable supports for carrying horizontal seismic loads

as opposed to using bigger parts of mounting systems in seismically active zones (see figure 4). The calculation of attacking seismic forces on the load side and the characteristic verifications on the resistance side are very complex, cost intensive and prone to error. However, the manufacturers of mounting systems offer software solutions to the planning engineers which contain state-of-the-art design and calculation methods including seismic design. These give the user the guarantee of always employing the current status, offering the manufacturer of mounting systems and fasteners an effective and sustainable means of customer loyalty by ensuring that the product range is applied adequately and liability-minimised. www.sup-scs.de

market

NEW OPTIMISM BUYS TIME FOR THE REAL CHALLENGES With some positive momentum as 2020 gets underway, there is an opportunity for the industry to take on challenges and opportunities, writes Will Jones, Chief Operating Officer of the British Home Enhancement Trade Association (BHETA)…

ne of the most positive things to come out of 2019 was a decisive election outcome – whatever views anyone may hold on its nature! At the very least, we now have a degree of clarity, which has long been missing, but which should now enable the industry to refocus on dealing with the challenges and embracing the positive opportunities. In short, to ‘get on with it’. Already we have seen some cautious optimism for retail in 2020, with consumer confidence up postelection, an expansionary budget forecast for February, and prospects for the housing market improved. Retail is expected to grow 1% in 2020. Not much, but something. Whether we are, as the saying goes, ‘out of the woods’ is quite another matter, but most commentators seem to agree that prospects have improved. So far, so good – but what we must not do is use this new positivity as an excuse to sit back. Whether you are a supplier or a retailer, this industry is undergoing serious structural changes and while a short-term economic boost is fantastic news, it is not going to create a fundamental upturn unless we all use the time it buys us to address the real challenges we face. The reality is 2020 may well see more administrations and restructuring as players who have not adapted to the fundamental shifts in the industry suffer as a result. What we now have is a renewed opportunity to accept the inevitable face of change and do something positive in response. The traditional drivers – value, convenience and service – remain crucial, but they are now basic expectations. Point of difference lies in new factors such as choice – where do I enjoy buying most; purpose – do I like the way this seller conducts its business; and privacy – do I feel comfortable that handing over my details is a safe and sensible thing to do. And those are just the principles. There are lots of practical details for us to take on too. A case in point is the impending legislation around recycling and packaging waste. This has clear negative implications for unwary suppliers and retailers; but can equally lead to positive actions which could prove ultimately beneficial. BHETA is engaging with the implications of new packaging laws – just as it has been doing on another simi-

larly fraught big issue - the responsible retail of bladed items in the light of the new Offensive Weapons Act. Other major challenges include US tariffs on tools; and the changing priorities – from things to experiences - of the younger consumer. Society is now much more interested in repair, rather than throw away; with burgeoning ‘maker spaces’ and community repair ‘shops’. Early days, but this could eventually prove a real positive for both the skills and the tools needed to sustain the industry. We are also seeing the effects of the changing nature of retail. Old retail models combined with entrenched sourcing policies have been evidenced in the B&Q sales decline in the third quarter of last year. The home and DIY giant recorded a 3.5% drop in total sales to £820m, down 3.4% l-f-l in the quarter to October 31, with performance hampered by ‘organisational complexity’. In contrast the fresher approach of sister brand Screwfix saw sales up by 7.9% to £477m, up 3.7% on a like-for-like basis, albeit still behind the innovative Toolstation. The fact that we now have a change in leadership at Kingfisher with new boss Thierry Garnier quoted as saying, “We have not found the right balance between getting the benefits of group scale and staying close to local markets. We are suffering from organisational complexity, and we are trying to do too much at once…” is perhaps another positive change to come out of 2019 – for suppliers at least! So, my hope is that now we have more clarity, we have a chance to regroup and refocus. Clarity is not a ‘silver bullet’, but maybe it provides an opportunity to take a breath, to study the trends, to invest in the ideas and innovations, and to appreciate that no supplier or retailer can afford to stand still. For those that can embrace the inevitability of change on all levels, the opportunity for 2020 and beyond could be exciting. Further information about BHETA and the trends to look out for can be found at www.bheta.co.uk or by calling BHETA Member Services on 0121 237 1130.

CASE STUDY OGL SOFTWARE & DELIGO

BOOSTING SALES ONLINE & OFFLINE Growth is always welcome, but it can challenge the existing infrastructure of businesses. Where is all that extra stock going to be stored? How are you going to stay on top of all those new orders? Expansion for Deligo – a wholesaler in fixings, fasteners and accessories for electrical wholesalers - meant the business had to decide how it could accommodate increased trade. Enter OGL Software... eligo partnered with OGL in 2016 when it was looking for a software solution to replace its existing Sage system, which it had outgrown. With plans to acquire new business and continue to grow, Deligo needed an ERP system that it could rely on and would support the firm as it expanded. “We had to do so many tasks outside the Sage system, that we spent too much time manually completing processes,” the firm said. “OGL Software is great because it connects all areas of the business together and we know it will continually grow with us.” Creating an online presence was an important decision for Deligo as it was keen to offer an accessible e-Commerce store and self-service customer portal to stay competitive. “The main reason we created an e-Commerce website was because OGL could integrate the website with the software system, which is important when we deal with large businesses who have accounts with us, and they need to view invoices as well as place orders.” The integrated e-Commerce store expanded Deligo’s routes to market, but primarily it allowed them to offer an enhanced customer service.

D

“We launched the website in January and by May we were doing about 5% of our sales on there. Instead of pushing for increased sales, we focused on the customer portal feature and our sales went up from 5% to 7%. We did £55,000 that month, which was £20,000 up from simply pushing the accounts functionality, which in turn boosted sales. “Customers can go in to get a copy of their invoice and they’ll see products that they didn’t know we sold, that they’ll go and add to their basket. When customers go through the website, they often buy related products and up their average order value as they can browse everything we offer. The website is the perfect way to showcase our products, much like our catalogue, but easier to update and more accessible.” To remain competitive, distributors are increasingly looking to sell online. OGL says: “If you’re looking to go digital with your sales, ensure you have business software that can integrate with your e-Commerce site for ultimate efficiency and scalability and to future-proof your business.” www.ogl.co.uk/software www.deligo.co.uk

TAMAR TRADING & TOOLFIX WIN TOOLBANK COMPETITION odmin’s Tamar Trading, Peterborough’s Toolfix and Bideford’s Blanchards Home Hardware were among the top winners of Toolbank’s Real Deals For You competition for 2019. To tie in with Toolbank’s big ‘Real Deals for You’ promotion, the huge specialist distributor of hand and power tools regularly runs a competition for its customers, based on window displays, in-store displays and marketing initiatives. A record-breaking 250 Toolbank customers took part this time around, judged by a guest panel that included: NMBS MD Chris Hayward, Industry Consultant Colin Petty, Insight DIY’s Steve Collinge and Builder Merchant News’ Lucy Anne Matthews, as well as Toolbank’s Simon Bicknell.

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE ON BUILDING SITES e may have spotted this news last year, but we’re still mightily intrigued by Hilti’s collaboration with Boston Dynamics and Trimble for autonomous robot ‘dogs’ on construction sites. Aiming to improve safety and productivity on-site, these ‘proof-ofconcept’ robots can rove around the uneven terrain of a building site, able to paws in their tracks when faced with obstacles before finding new routes to follow regular repeatable tasks.

SOCIABLE SPARKIES TOP LIST

WHAT DID YOU MISS IN TORQUE’S DIGITAL EDITION?

lectricians are the friendliest tradespeople. That’s the current belief of 1,482 Brits, according to a survey conducted by My Job Quote. It’s likely that carpenters will feel saw about the poll, which placed them among the least affable tradespeople. The survey also slated tilers, who came bottom of the list, sadly.

THE HAFREN SECURITY FASTENERS BRAND REVOLUTION To mark its 25th year in business, Hafren Security Fasteners has completely revamped its packaging to back its extensive support package for approved distributors…

afren Security Fasteners, a leading wholesaler of security fasteners, is launching new product packaging and highquality branded tooling, giving it a new look and feel that is much bolder and appealing across all of its product offerings. The new packaging will start hitting store shelves in 2020. Hafren Fasteners said it wanted its packaging to reflect the quality of the products inside the box as well as its reputation for high-quality security fasteners products throughout the construction industry. “After doing our homework, we came up with a design which we feel meets the requirements of the market,” explains Marketing Manager Ryan Crawley. “Our customers wanted something with a higher visual impact that would gain the attention of their customers and the new Hafren Branded box undoubtedly delivers. Our new packaging conveys to anyone who uses our products, that they are going to perform at a very high level.” As a wholesaler of Security Fasteners, Hafren Fasteners is focused on supporting frontline ‘Distribution Partners’. Hafren vows never to seek out direct end user business and this is at the heart of the firm's brand ethics and route to market; preferring to partner with proactive, forward thinking distributors who ‘get’ the value proposition and want to differentiate themselves from the rest of the market. Approved distributors of Hafren “set a shining bright orange example to the marketplace,” the firm says: “We expect the Hafren Brand Values will resonate with distributors willing to

invest to ensure sustainable, above average growth and profitability. The Hafren Brand strongly supports the distribution chain and our marketing model makes it quick and easy to buy and sell Hafren Security Fasteners.” Hafren offers a number of support packages to distributors, including readily available Hafren product handbooks, demonstration/sales packs and brochures, marketing support, an e-Commerce website and now - via the revamped packaging a product that is set to stand out amongst the competition. The high-impact packaging design has been produced to give continuity and ease-of-recognition across the Hafren Security Fastener brand - and to help improve shelf appearances: “The boxes have been designed with an understanding of the importance of maximising store/shelf space and therefore the size formats are optimal to increase profitability.” The boxes have been made from 100% recycled cardboard too, minimising environmental impact. Hafren's product range quality is backed by technical experience and commercial acumen within its team; all supported and backed up by ISO accreditations in Quality (9001) & Environmental Management (14001). The firm concludes: “Hafren is a strong reliable brand that has been embraced by the market; is renowned for quality; reliability and world class customer service – a reputation we have worked hard to achieve for over 24 years. That is the Hafren Brand Promise enjoyed by all our distributors.” www.hafrenfasteners.com
