EVERGREEN INFRASTRUCTURE INFRASTRUCTURE and big projects have been a steady ship in the recent rocky seas of disruption. DIY had a very visible boom in 2020, but probably isn’t reaching quite those heights in mid-2022 as inflation bites consumers. Automotive, a lynchpin for many fastener businesses, is still facing a number of headwinds and readjustments with the transition to electric. Automotive, like white goods, is another sector significantly impacted when consumers are less willing to get their wallets and purses out. Thank goodness for infrastructure then. It’s not immune to inflation, with suppliers who have already agreed prices with contractors having a hard time keeping hold of profits, but nevertheless there have been no shortage of projects announced or continuing regardless of disruption. Energy infrastructure must surely be the hottest ticket. New nuclear plants have been announced for the UK, the USA is scrambling to beef up its wind energy structure and most of Europe is prepared to spend billions of euros to build secure energy networks following the invasion of Ukraine. All-in-all, it seems safe to predict more fastener and related companies will be outlining their infrastructure-supplying pedigree over the coming months and years.

Bosch bolsters battery alliance hree brands – Husqvarna, Kübler Workwear and PerfectPro – have joined the battery ‘Power for All Alliance’. Founded in 2020, the Alliance now includes 10 well-known brands, where users can use one 18V battery and one charger for products from all the Alliance members. Power tool brands are increasingly looking to join forces and share battery systems, with rival systems like the Cordless Alliance System (CAS), which has over 30 brands including Metabo, Prebena, Gesipa and Trumpf, sharing a single battery system. Henk Becker, President of Bosch Power Tools, said: “The world-famous brand Husqvarna will strengthen our ‘Power for All Alliance’ in the garden area; our partners Kübler Workwear and PerfectPro will open up two new application areas to users within the framework of our 18V platform: heated casual workwear and entertainment electronics.”

T

More than 30 million Bosch-branded ‘Power for All’ batteries are expected to be on the market by early 2023 – these 18V batteries have been consistently compatible since 2007. Furthermore, the ‘Power for All Alliance’ product portfolio is to be extended to over 100 tools. Bosch alone will expand the product range in the area Home & Garden by more than 40% to around 60 tools up to the end of this year. The Power for All Alliance includes Bosch, Gardena, Gloria, Wagner, Rapid, Flymo, Steinel and in the future Husqvarna, Kübler Workwear and PerfectPro too.

How did you get into the fasteners and fixings industry? I completed my bachelor’s degree in the field of Economics. During my university years, I had the opportunity to do internships in different fields and sectors. When I graduated from university, I decided to pursue a career in commerce. As a consequence, I applied to Norm Fasteners’ Global Sales job posting. During my 22-year adventure in Norm Fasteners, I worked in sales, logistics and marketing departments and I have been working as Norm Fasteners Sales Director since October 2021.

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

What does your day-to-day job involve? We hold meetings on issues such as sales and business development strategies and customer satisfaction management with the FSP, key account management, domestic and international sales departments which are affiliated to sales directorates. In addition, we follow the developments in the sectors we operate in and determine our short and long term strategies. What are the biggest changes you have seen in the company since you started? As Norm Fasteners, entering into the automotive market has carried us forward in terms of increasing our R&D efforts to develop products tailored to customer needs, investing in new sectors with an in-house production approach, and enhancing our product & service ranges. Thanks to the customer portfolio that we have expanded over the years, we have become a global company with our sales and logistics centres in Germany, France, Romania, Poland and the U.S. Besides the emphasis we put on R&D, innovation, quality product and service sustainability, we do not compromise on our motto “global scale, personal care” and make our customers feel that we are with them every step of the way. In this area, every year we continue to strengthen our business partnerships that are well-grounded and based on trust. Another important change that our company has made in recent years is developing new business models and new projects. One of these projects that we are happy to share is that we have been selected as one of two Full-Service Provider companies to supply the fasteners used within the scope of the V710 Ford Transit Project. We are the first Turkish company to receive Ford’s FSP title. As Norm Holding, we have this year entered into a major period of change for our corporate identity. In line with this process, we have renewed our logos by gathering the brand names of our coating and tooling companies under the umbrella of “Norm”. Along with the corporate identity change process, we continue to work on improving technological infrastructures and increasing production capacities of Norm Tooling and Norm Coating. We will continue to serve our domestic and foreign customers with our full in-house production approach in the fields of coating, tooling, machinery and automation, as well as fasteners. We accelerated our sustainability efforts for a better future within the scope of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact (UNGC) that we signed in 2021. Based on the “Future Matters” strategy, we determined the roadmaps that will enable us to reach our goals in the short, medium and long term and established the Sustainability Committee. In order to support the committee and implement the determined action plans, we formed five workgroups: Digital Transformation, R&D and Innovation, Corporate Governance, Environment, Human and Society. As one of the sponsors of the R&D and Innovation Sustainability Workgroup, I am particularly happy to be involved in such efforts for a better future. Together with our “Future Matters” strategy and the other strategic efforts that we have completed during the year, we continue to take firm steps forward and work together to establish a shared value across the entire value chain for a sustainable future.

14

torque-expo.com

Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far? After a preparation and transition period that lasted for two years, as Norm Holding, we started using the SAP program in 2019. This transition period was the beginning of a period of change for all our companies and employees. This was a great opportunity to review the way we do and manage our business and shape our future processes. After the SAP transition; being appointed as the Marketing Manager and being in a different role after years in the sales department, have given me a new perspective and allowed me to look at things from a different point of view. After working as the Global Sales Manager for two years, I have taken charge as Sales Director since October 2021.

// I believe that women should take a more active role in the fastener sector. As Norm Fasteners, we continue our efforts to increase women’s employment within the scope of equal opportunity and diversity, which is among our sustainability goals. // What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry? Fasteners are very crucial products for many different markets and that is the favourite thing that excites me most about the fastener industry. The use of fasteners in a variety of sectors creates an opportunity for us to diversify our risks depending on the situation. When a sector we serve is negatively affected by the market, we can be more active in the other sectors we serve. This advantage excites me and makes me love my job even more. Being in the fastener sector requires close followups with other sectors and establishing a strategy according to many different variables. What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the fastener industry? There is an expression in our sector for fasteners: “Small things matter”. Fasteners are products that are very small in size, but very critical products – the absence of them can cause big problems. In addition, it is a sector that requires detailed work due to the number, variety and complexity of products. Knowing the details and the ability to see the big picture at the same time is even more valuable in the fastener industry, and women’s talents in these area are obvious. For this reason, I believe that women should take a more active role in the fastener sector. As Norm Fasteners, we continue our efforts to increase women’s employment within the scope of equal opportunity and diversity, which is among our sustainability goals. Any final thoughts? I am very pleased to be a part of this Women In Fasteners feature and I am glad Torque Magazine has reserved a special area for women in the industry. In the future, I hope to see more women in the sector. www.normfasteners.com

COVER PROFILE OWLETT-JATON 75TH ANNIVERSARY

Then and now: The Jaton subsidiary launched in the 1960s (left); and Owlett-Jaton today (right)

SIGNS OF THE TIMES 2022 marks Owlett-Jaton’s 75th year of business. Much has changed in the seven and a half decades since 1947, both at Owlett-Jaton and in the wider world. CEO Ian Doherty connects the firm’s developments over the years…

A

Image: Wikimedia Commons

s the UK celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on 3 June 2022, Owlett-Jaton is celebrating its 75th birthday, tracing its roots back to the founding of W.M Owlett Ltd on 3 June 1947. This milestone has given us cause to reflect on the massive changes which have taken place in our industry and the world over those 75 years. Few of us can remember what the world was like 75 years ago. Here in the UK, the country was rebuilding after the second world war, virtually everything was rationed and the British Empire still existed and much of the world map was pink. In Europe the Iron Curtain had fallen, Germany was divided and the Cold War was just starting. In 1947, the UK was still the workshop of the world, it would have been unthinkable to source fasteners and fixings from anywhere other than the UK. 1947 also saw the setting up of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, this was the precursor to the World Trade Organisation and was an important step in reducing protectionist tariffs and stimulating world trade. The supply chain we know today is

16

torque-expo.com

partially the result of this liberalisation. Back then, the Far East was just a source of raw materials, the People’s Republic of China would not be founded for another two years and Vietnam was French Indo China. Today the Far East is the very foundation of many of our supply chains, a change made possible by free trade, communications technology and the containerisation of shipping – it seems strange to think that the first international standard for a container was only published in 1968. For us, James and Tatton was set up as an Engineers’ Merchant in 1951. Two years later in 1953 the Queen’s Coronation (pictured left) was televised with cameras being allowed to film the ceremony for the first time. Televisions were a luxury in those austere post war years and families and neighbours gathered round a small flickering black and white screen to see the pomp and pageant of the Coronation. The march of technology over 75 years has been remarkable, today we take the internet, social media, instant news on our smart phones and simple accessible worldwide communication for granted.

// From the moon landings to the advent of the internet, the world has changed radically during Owlett-Jaton’s 75 years in business. //

The 1950s and 60s were a time of optimism and growth, in 10 years the world went from Yuri Gagarin being the first man in space to Neil Armstong setting foot on the moon – even the sky seemed no longer to be the limit. The 1970s started strongly, but the oil price shock of 1973 was a blow and it took a couple of years for growth to return, but Owlett was expanding moving away from its London base to open a branch in Nailsea near Bristol. But by 1977 when the Queen was celebrating her Silver Jubilee, Jaton too was expanding away from its Stoke on Trent home with a branch in Swindon, followed over the next couple of years with branches in Elland near Halifax, Warrington and Leighton Buzzard, which subsequently moved to Milton Keynes. These branches were typical of their time holding stock and delivering to customers on vans. Order to delivery time would typically be several days and deliveries were made once or twice a week to locations. The 90s and early 2000s saw a major shift in distribution patterns. Our Stone warehouse opened in 1995 and over the next few years stockholding was centralised with all deliveries coming from Stone. Order lead times were still days and delivery days were still fixed. The branches have lived on without stock as sales offices retaining their historic links to local customers. As time progressed and technology improved lead times continued to shorten and deliveries became more frequent. Owlett-Jaton were the first in the UK to offer nationwide next day delivery. That is now the norm, allowing distributors to order by 5.30 pm for next day delivery, allowing them in turn to minimise their stock investment and deliver to their customers the next day.

That change in service was only possible with the major changes in how we handle products in our warehouses. Back in 1947 stock management would all have been paper based and heavily reliant on individuals with product knowledge of what to buy, though lead times as product was locally sourced were probably shorter. In the warehouse, knowing where in the warehouse a product was to be found was based on the knowledge of the warehouse manager and their team. Today we take barcodes for granted, but here at Owlett-Jaton they now drive our entire warehouse management system, no product comes in, moves or gets despatched without being scanned. Barcodes only started to be widely used on consumer products in the 1980s, and took quite a few more years to be widespread in our industry. Now we are moving on to 2D codes incorporating much more information, including batch identifiers, country of origin and box quantities. With product ranges growing, here at Owlett-Jaton we have over 50,000 products on our system, it is difficult to see how this could have been achieved without the aid of modern systems. The warehouse itself has changed, modern warehouses with narrow aisle multi-level pallet racking, would have been a revelation in the 1940s, never mind modern picking automation. At Owlett-Jaton, we have invested in nine Modula machines. Each of these machines can hold up to 1,200 products and allow a single operator to pick up to 150 lines per hour. In addition, picking is now carried out at waist height and has eliminated the stretching and bending of rack based picking, and with that much of the risk of injury to our pickers.

COVER PROFILE OWLETT-JATON 75TH ANNIVERSARY

// Almost every type of fastener and fixing has seen innovation and development, our introduction of the Thunderbolt concrete screw revolutionised anchoring. //

Well known and trusted brands were not much of a feature in 1947, while today they are integral to the market place.

Not only has product handling changed, but the products themselves are, in many cases, more sophisticated and specialised. The humble woodscrew is humble no longer, in 1947 a No.8 by 1½ slotted woodscrew from Guest, Keen & Nettlefold (GKN), was probably the height of sophistication. Today, you can still buy the same product, albeit as a 4 x 40mm packed in boxes of 200 rather than by the gross. We have seen huge evolution in almost every aspect of these products, our Vortex screw is a great example with Pozi and Torx drives, yellow passivated or exterior finishes and a range of features including a double countersunk head, milling ribs, gash point and Sawfix technology to allow easy insertion. Almost every type of fastener and fixing has seen innovation and development, our introduction of the Thunderbolt concrete screw revolutionised anchoring. We have built on that with our JCP range of fixings which now has over 2,000 products supported by our Anchor Calculation Program. Coupled with the innovative Blindbolt range of blind fixings, our brands can meet almost every conceivable requirement. Well known and trusted brands were not much of a feature in 1947, today they are an integral part of the market place. With Unifix, JCP, Vortex, Thunderbolt and most recently JRP – Jaton Riveting Products – Owlett-Jaton provides quality products and merchandising solutions to meet customer needs, truly the complete wholesale solution! In 1947, environmental concerns were more localised and concerned with pollution rather than climate change. Smog caused by coal fires was a major problem and drove the introduction of legislation to improve air quality. Today climate change is front of mind and we at Owlett-Jaton recognise our responsibility to minimise our impact on the global environment. In 2019 we became the first UK fastener and fixings

18

wholesaler to achieve ISO 14001:2015 environmental accreditation and have continued working to improve our performance. Through investment and changes in behaviour and process, we have reduced energy consumption by over a third in three years and we source all of our electricity from renewable sources. We maximise the recyclable content of our packaging and our move to paper based gummed tape has eliminated the use of over 600,000m of polypropylene tape. Our waste is all segregated with over 99% being recycled or reused. Over the years many have predicted the end of the traditional face-to-face sales calls. The pandemic certainly accelerated the use of video tools such as Zoom and MS teams, but at Owlett-Jaton we still believe in personal contact and service. In spite of the growth of sales through our OJ Trade website, we have over 70 people directly talking to customers on the phone or out on the road visiting. We have just grown our field sales team with the appointment of 4 new Area Sales Managers. By maintaining our local sales offices and investing in our field sales and merchandising teams we aim to keep that great personal service alive. 75 years of change, and so much has changed and I am sure will keep changing. Recent events have shown the fragility of some of our supply chains, war in Ukraine has highlighted the risks in globalisation and energy security. EU Anti-Dumping duties move us back towards protectionism and environmental concerns force us to look at our supply chains. We don’t know what the next 75 years hold for us, but providing great customer service will always remain at the core of Owlett-Jaton. www.owlett-jaton.com

REMACHES FACTORY SECURES SUCCESS AT LAMIERA FAIR

Fresh from its participation in the Milan-set Lamiera Fair, Remaches Factory explains how its test corner for riveting tools was a winner with visitors…

L

amiera Fair in Milan, dedicated to sheet metal fixing, was held in May from 18 to 21, with a record number of visitors from the sector. Remaches Factory was present with a comprehensive presentation of its riveting products for metal sheets and tools for setting. The idea of creating a corner for visitors to test the riveting tools was a winner, the firm tells Torque Magazine. The chance of personally trying the quality of the wide range of battery and pneumatic riveting tools while receiving detailed explanations on rivets to be applied with each tool, was a positive experience, providing an immediate answer to any questions or doubts. The riveting tool test area became a meeting and talking point for visitors who were enthusiastic about the variety of uses and the quality and wide range of structural fasteners. Remaches Factory presented a detailed illustrative display of each structural rivet with a clear description of the qualities and application range of each type. The business said it reconfirmed its highly professional fastening expertise, characterised by its wide range of products for industry and special applications. Distributors can count on a large spectrum of solutions to offer their customers with the technical and explanatory support that Remaches Factory offers. Knowing the qualities of each special rivet is what characterises the professionality of

a distributor, and Remaches Factory accompanies the customer in every step of the sale, it says. During the exhibition, Remaches Factory also presented its All-Inclusive Service dedicated to its distributor customers. The package includes: 1. Selection of products from Remaches Factory to include in their range according to their customer type and need. 2. Possibility of online purchasing in real time with chance to check the incoming goods on arrival. 3. Chance to purchase material in FOB full container directly from the production company. 4. Complete image and marketing support service with the possibility of creating brochures and a technical catalogue with the entire Remaches Factory range but customised with the distributor brand and details. 5. The opportunity to join the distributor’s weekly graphic mailing programme. Remaches Factory is a company with an all-inclusive service vision, to facilitate and support distributor customers in Italy and Europe with the selection of product, advice, sale and image of the customer. Hamar fixings Another novelty was the introduction of Hamar products with exclusive distribution for Italy.

Hamar is a leading and accredited company in the production of fixings for construction with special emphasis on insulation fixings for external walls and roofs with a range of excellent products. Hamar is now available in Italy with the cooperation of the experienced Remaches Factory’s Team for a fruitful and successful collaboration. ITALY

ARSER: A HISTORY OF MANUFACTURING While raw material and energy prices among the many challenges facing fastener manufacturers, Bologna’s Arser – which has over 50 years’ experience of producing threaded socket screws and other items – is seeing some positive effects of recent supply chain tribulations, as purchasers look closer to home for their supplies. Arser speaks with Torque Magazine… How is the Italian fastener market currently, compared with 2021? We’ve seen continuous growth of key sectors like the window & door markets, which have been helped by government fiscal policies aimed to encourage changes towards energy requalification building solutions (upgrading energy efficiency of older buildings). Is the Italian market facing the same kind of challenges as the rest of Europe; for example, energy prices, raw material costs, etc? There are big challenges concerning energy and raw material costs, due to relatively low levels of energy and raw materials independence. In terms of energy, government decisions about developing alternative sources and types of energies in the future will have a big impact in this area. Recruitment is a challenge in some territories – is it hard to get skilled staff in Italy right now? Recruitment represents one of the major challenges for Italian manufacturers, but not in terms of skilled white collar workers: The biggest problem is finding young people willing to learn a job in the workshop. The current school system is not effective as a bridge to enter working life: most schools do not include any real approach to working life with consistent programmes of job training. The school system is not involved in the preparation of workers as much as that of employers.

Government fiscal policies, including those boosting energy efficiency in buildings, have bolstered the Italian fastener market What are some of the advantages of manufacturing in Italy? Some companies have an unbelievable history of experience and skills in manufacturing with organisations where people would always make the difference, together with unique equipment which is often developed with a relevant expertise, instead of being purchased as commercial machinery. What kind of proportion of your business is exports? We export around 65% of our turnover and we expected the average 60% to 70% to remain the same for next year and the following. What kind of markets and sectors do you service in particular, eg automotive, construction, white goods, etc?

“The challenges are sizeable, but the history of manufacturing in Italy is strong.”

Our products are used in all sectors: from automotive to agricultural machinery, from windows and doors to electronics, from general mechanics to electrics. Six customers out of ten are distributors so we cannot state the % of parts per each sector, however we tend to contain automotive within 15% by choice because it is the sector with major fluctuations in trend. What are your ambitions for the next 12 months? We wish to consolidate the great result of 2021 and possibly manage further gradual growth. Any final thoughts? The effect of revising the globalisation policies in component purchasing has had a positive impact on all the companies that have succeed in maintaining production in Europe. The challenges of energy and materials are sizeable, but the history of manufacturing in certain European countries, like Italy, is strong too.

NEW INVESTMENTS AT MECAVIT Production plant expansion, turnover increases and the difficulties of making predictions in 2022… Mecavit’s Sales Director Giuseppe Verdoliva takes Torque Magazine through the latest at Mecavit…

// The greater flexibility this new plant has given to production is also reflected in the better management of scheduling and reliability of delivery times. //

24

torque-expo.com

You've recently made a sizeable investment with your new extension... As a continuation of Mecavit Company’s technological investment programme, during the locked down months of 2020 we carried out an expansion of the production plant of over 1,000 metres². We have a very modern line for the preparation of wire rod. It ensures the timely preparation of raw material immediately before use in moulding. It also allows us to store large quantities of raw material and significantly increase the quantities in stock, so we can be more cautious in times of product supply crises. The greater flexibility that this new plant has given to production is also reflected in the better management of scheduling and reliability of delivery times, which are strategically important in this uncertain period for the fasteners market.

How is the Italian fastener market compared to 2021? Italy, like the rest of the world, closed 2021 with all the difficulties, problems and unknowns posed by an unprecedented health emergency; In addition to undermining the health of the world population, Covid-19 has generated economic and social crises whose consequences have been very heavy and will also be reflected in future years. Despite this situation, 2021 saw some favourable events for the fasteners market, which meant that Mecavit broke all sales records in 2021. In fact, the year had already started with an upward demand in all sectors and, relying on an almost complete assortment of standard products in stock, the various European distributors in great difficulty in finding imported products from the Far East.

24 26 TERRITORY FOCUS - Italy - Mecavit TOR065 2022.qxp 24/06/2022 16:42 Page 2

TERRITORY FOCUS Those difficulties were probably the result of various contingent factors: the European steel mills that during the lockdown had reduced production, in the face of the reactivation of demand, had favourable ground to cut the quotas for users and to raise prices. A similar situation has occurred in Asia where local steel mills have increased prices by 60% in a few months and sea freight has also become very expensive, pushing European importers to move more purchases to Europe. To this was added the anti-dumping complaint against China initiated by many European fastener manufacturers and the duties imposed, generating a rapid brake on imports from all over the Far East and especially from China. All these factors have caused a saturation of the production capacity of many European producers with consequently very long delivery lead times, sometimes more than six to eight months from the order. The “Just in time” purchasing system used by most end users therefore went into “tilt” very soon and this led to a rush in search of ready product on the market. Consequently, the lack of planning of companies has forced buyers to try to compensate for the inevitable delays caused by the lack of raw materials on the market. Is the Italian market facing the same kind of challenges as the rest of Europe, eg energy prices, raw material costs, etc? The recovery in demand, which contributed to the unexpected strong increase in turnover in 2021, with the exception of the automotive sector (which is still in difficulty due to the microchip crisis), appears to continue throughout 2022. The high numbers of backlog orders which covers at least through the current year, leads us to think of a similar year to the past despite the scarce assortment of

ITALY standard finished products ready in stock which, however, have had to undergo a significant increase in sales prices. The incredible rising peak in energy costs, both gas and electricity, have heavily affected the costs of products further reducing the operating margins of Italian and European manufacturing companies. Despite this, in 2022 Mecavit expects to further increase sales revenues as well as its leadership in the domestic and international markets.

// For many years, Italy has established itself in Europe as a “fastener workshop”. //

Recruitment is a challenge in some territories – is it hard to get skilled staff in Italy right now? Yes, it's true. Unfortunately, Mecavit also has difficulty in finding qualified personnel, above all in production. You need specifically qualified personnel in the manufacturing of fasteners. For this reason, an internal training programme has been organised for a long time to educate and improve the people who work within the company. What are some of the advantages of manufacturing in Italy? I believe that for many years Italy has distinguished itself in Europe as a

“fastener workshop”. The Italian sector leaders who have supported the most prestigious automotive industries in the last 30 years have contributed to the formation of a corollary of technologically advanced certified sub-suppliers. The imagination and flexibility of the Italian people has earned a prestigious reputation in the fastener industry which is appreciated in the world – and is the subject of plagiarism attempts by industries in many other countries. What kind of proportion of your business is exports? Thanks to our presence at international sector events and marketing actions dedicated to the major players in the field of fasteners, in 2021 Mecavit exported about 70% of its turnover, to over 50 countries. Do you have any key sectors you operate in? Like almost all fasteners manufacturers, the most prestigious driving sector is certainly the automotive market. Thanks to the IATF 16949 certification held for years, this is the reference sector for Mecavit. Other key sectors include white goods, industrial mechanics, window and door industry as well as DIN ISO standard products… we are dedicated to distribution. What are your ambitions for the next 12 months? I know it is perhaps trivial, but this is the most difficult question to answer. We are all trying to understand what the outcome of the ongoing Ukraine conflict will be and above all how long it will last. The market is really in great confusion in this period, so any forecasts would be totally risky. Mecavit is currently experiencing excellent operating conditions with very positive forecasts, expecting to continue to grow compared to 2021. Is there anything else you'd like to add? The optimism of Mecavit’s shareholders over the last 20 years of history is continuing thanks to the positive turnover we’ve generated. Therefore, new investments have recently been scheduled which will expand and improve the production and quality of the products we manufacture, which will help maintain the high market position that Mecavit has achieved over the years. www.mecavit.it

How did you get into the industry? I started at BBI when I was 19, I had never been in the fastener trade previously. It was my first full-time 9 to 5 regular job and my career has just progressed from there. I have been here over 11 years now and there have probably been four or five steps from where I started to where I am now. I have been involved in every aspect of the business and I will turn my hand at anything that BBI needs. I was given a great piece of advice early on and that was to make yourself the go-to person, and effectively, that’s what I did.

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

What does your day-to-day job involve? It could be anything depending on what is happening in the industry or where we are in the month. So it could be anything from doing large customer enquiries/ orders, some form of HR, EDI testing, customer visits, organising our exhibitions (like Stuttgart or Torque Expo) or to our QMS, the potential is endless. There is always going to be a reactive element of my day-to-day role because of what we do. It might be a quality issue, pricing, orders or something operational. Actions will have a domino effect on certain things, and then that triggers another job, so no two days are the same. You have to change hats consistently. What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and company since you started? It is quite hard to quantify because I feel like in the past three years, we’ve had three big changes. COVID, Brexit and antidumping. They have all come very close together so it’s hard to tell which has had the biggest impact. People within the industry were lacking a lot of information and knowledge on all three which has had a substantial impact. Goods are taking a lot longer to move within our industry across all levels of the supply chain in comparison to years gone by but to know how much of that is due to Brexit, COVID or ADD is difficult to pinpoint a percentage. All three have impacted our industry significantly in both good and bad ways. Brexit and the ADD676 impacted us more operationally than COVID and we’ve spent a lot of resource adapting and streamlining to accommodate these changes. So effectively, while all of these issue were challenging, they were all triggers, so to speak. Once you’ve done what you need to do with that component, you just kind of move on to the next one. Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far? I would say my highlights are if I look at this company from when I first started here, to where we are now. The difference between the two and the level growth we have achieved in that time; knowing that I have played a part in that is rewarding. A lot of this is down to how slick and efficient we are. We’re constantly evolving and consistently improving the operation, the product, the customer service, everything from start to finish. We’re always, always improving. We strive on being the best. The progression of BBI as a company is unreal, and I know I’ve grown at the same time alongside it. I look forward to see where we will be in 10 years’ time. What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry? Achieving results. I like putting the graft in and then when it comes to the end of the month or year, when all the sales figures are in and we run the numbers on where they used to be and

30

torque-expo.com

where they are now, I enjoy seeing that hard work come to fruition. I love doing the exhibitions, I enjoy meeting our customers and building relationships. I am a people person. I work with an outstanding team and we are very transparent here. I’ve never known a company like it, I think that’s why we do things as well as we do. Because if there’s any problem then we will all be involved in it and have some acknowledgement or awareness of everything. The communication here is extremely strong and we all work really hard. What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the fastener industry? I think it’s happening naturally anyway. I think it’s becoming more and more evident that women are a growing presence within our industry. There’s not many companies today that we deal with where there’s isn’t a female member of staff. More and more of the key people we work with are now women, which is promising and it shows progress if you compare it to 5 years ago.

// We’re constantly evolving and constantly improving the operation, the product, the customer service, everything from start to finish. // However I’ve always been fortunate, as BBI UK have always had quite a few women working within the company since I started. I don’t know whether my vision is a bit closed on this just purely because I’ve never known anything else. A large portion of Brighton Best staff globally are women, we have a lot of women in senior management positions from our CEO, branch managers, regional managers, product managers etc. A lot of our women are heavily involved in Women in Fasteners (WIFI) and similar things. It has never been a conscious thing, it was never really distinguished. Women being involved was not actively promoted but it just naturally happened. Any final thoughts? Gender doesn’t really make that much of a difference anymore. Success is all down to personal attributes; positive attitude, motivation, work ethic and commitment. All of those attributes combined with a woman is a force to be reckoned with. When you put women together, powerful things can happen. www.brightonbest.co.uk

Everybody needs fasteners. Whether I sit there and think they're as good as a pair of shoes, it's not the same thing. But if you look at everything, whether it's at home, or whether you're walking along the street, it's always fasteners keeping something together, otherwise everything is going to fall apart. It’s quite an interesting industry, knowing that you're dealing with something that is essential and that everybody needs.

As long as you can do the job, I don’t think it really matters whether it is a male or female. Here it is purely coincidental that there are more women than men, although when you step into the warehouse it’s different. I’ve never felt any prejudice towards being a female in this industry.

I find the fastener industry really interesting as there’s loads of different little things. Before I started, I didn’t know the difference between nuts, bolts, fully threaded and these sorts of things. But the more I look into it, there is so much more I need to learn, and I find it very interesting. I feel that women are accepted well in the industry and I haven’t come across any negativity.

I love my job. It is different every day, nothing is the same. There is always a new challenge, and it is never the same kind of thing, so you are forever learning, evolving and getting better at what you do.

I have been in the fastener industry for around eight years, and I’d never done it before but found it quite interesting. People might think, there’s nuts, bolts and washers, but it’s incredible how many different items there is out there. I have a habit wherever I go, I identify different fasteners, you get obsessed. They are literally everywhere in everyday life. Fasteners hold the world together and I find it quite fascinating.

he last few years changed the way safety washer manufacturers approach their different array of sectors, redefining new strategies to organise and rethink their modus operandi. If the pandemic deeply affected the fastener industry, stopping fairs and forcing companies to shift and change adapting to a new kind of normal, since 2020 established businesses like Growermetal have also had the opportunity to improve their organisation and develop their services, in order to suit the needs of the evolving scenario. Now, with the ending of the state of emergency in Italy and the easing of the pandemic restrictions across the world, Growermetal is ready to return and join in trade fairs. Among the next appointments in the show calendar, participating at InnoTrans is going to be particularly significant. Under the slogan “The future of mobility in times of climate

TORQUE FOCUS RAIL FASTENERS AND TOOLS change”, the 13th edition of the world’s leading trade fair for transport technology and mobility will take place from 20 to 23 September 2022 on the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. So, the Italian manufacturer will have the chance to show not only its productive model, which is evolving towards greater sustainability, but also its expanded range of safety washers for the rail industry and spring washers for the railway industry. The Italian company has extensive experience and knowhow in the production of railway washers. Between the many solutions offered by the wide portfolio of products of the company, railway track spring washers were developed specifically to secure railroad track assemblies. Thanks to their unique geometry, Growermetal’s single and double coiled spring washers prevent the rail loosening from railroad ties, withstanding the intense shocks and absorbing the dynamic loads produced by passing trains. Available in many different sizes, these products are manufactured according to the UIC 864-3, UNI 6217 and NF F 50-001 standards and are broadly used in the railway industry throughout Europe. Also available from Growermetal are the single coil springs in accordance with the standard of the American Railroad Engineering Association (A.R.E.A. 1967) with high spring force for the US and american markets. Flawless coating with Delta-Protekt KL100 After being qualified by the German railway company Deutsche Bahn for the supply of double washers for railway equipment according to DBS 918 006 for over 20 years, in 2020 the Deutsche Bahn approved the Delta-Protekt® KL100 zinc flake coating from Dörken® on Growermetal’s railway double coiled springs. This zinc flake coating allows the washers to reach outstanding anti-corrosion resistance, with more than 720 hours in neutral salt spray tests, according to ISO 9227. This surface coating is therefore particularly suitable for applications with high humidity, ensuring the perfect adhesion of the coating during the product lifetime. Range overview Providing an extensive variety of products is a key factor for a company in terms of flexibility. That’s why Growermetal has studied its safety washers in different designs, high-quality materials and dimensions, including several surface treatments and coatings to cover a wide range of areas in the railway area. In addition to the single and double coiled spring washers, the series for railroad tracks includes many other solutions: • Conical elastic Contact and Sperrkant washers are ideal in fastening connections used in electromechanical applications requiring vibration resistance and parts subject to temperature variation, as they are designed to create an elastic pre-load in a bolted-joint connection, reducing the risk of unwanted loosening. • Conical elastic washers for bolts prevent loosening of assemblies by the elastic compensation of expansion and contraction and the elimination of play. • Flat washers for bolts are ideal for the broader uses, as they prevent surface damage from nuts and bolts and provide a greater load bearing surface.

Growermetal's spring washers prevent the rail loosening from railroad ties

The “ultimate evolution” with Grower TenKeep® As a continuously growing company, part of Growermetal’s resources are invested in creating innovation, throughout the development and research of advanced geometries and fastening technologies. Grower TenKeep® washer is the latest product introduced in the safety washer assortment of the company, created inside the R&D laboratories. Announced in the market in 2019, this security washer was rewarded with the Route to Fastener Innovation Competition award at Fastener Fair Stuttgart in the same year and is an example of a product offering maximum performance, even in the most extreme applications. As proved by several tests, extreme vibrations and dynamic loads don’t affect the tightening of Grower TenKeep®, which shows an exceptional grip thanks to its two surfaces with knurls of different geometry and a working principle based on friction. This leads to many advantages, including defined and uniform friction conditions, a higher degree of untightening torque (+40% minimum) and no slips or damages during the tightening and untightening of the washer, which contributed to the good response of the market to the product. These results, together with the other benefits offered by the safety washers series, give an added value to the company, which is looking forward to show its solutions in-person to all its present or future customers. www.growermetal.com

ON TRACK FOR SAFETY Anti-loosening tech and remote AI analysis of track fasteners have all been created with safety uppermost in mind...

KAWASAKI TRACK TECHNOLOGIES > Remote Track Fastener Monitoring Kawasaki Track Technologies has started testing a remote track fastener monitoring technology in Japan. While installed on a locomotive, the technology captures high resolution pictures and provides data for Kawasaki to utilise machine learning algorithms to identify potential track fasteners that need to be inspected and repaired. Kawasaki employs cameras and global positioning sensors to identify potential defects with track fastening systems. When the system is complete, it will provide near real time exceptions to customers to plan maintenance. This recent technology will continue to expand Kawasakiʼs autonomous track inspection technology to enhance railroad safety and operating efficiencies. There are plans to roll out similar testing in the North American freight rail industry in the coming months and begin piloting the monitoring system in early 2023. www.kawasaki-track.com

Irish Rail Safely Secured with NORD-LOCK Washers When Irish Rail noticed that the bolts on their axle boxes were loosening due to vibration, they replaced the locking-wire mechanism on the wheel sets with Nord-Lock washers. As the news reports that refreshment trolleys may not return to Irish Rail services until next year, passengers can be thankful that a small dietary inconvenience should be the only thing to contend with when travelling across Ireland’s national railway network. Safety in this industry is of course paramount, and service technicians are fully aware of the implications should any component, right down to the smallest of fasteners, be installed or assembled incorrectly. As trains and railway networks become more advanced, so do the demands on rail lines and train parts. When a train is travelling at over 300 km/h, the whole carriage is rattled with constant vibration and strain, creating a host of challenges. At Irish Rail’s wheel shop, every wheelset has its own serial number and workbook, so that servicing is meticulous and has full traceability. With one model that originally came installed with a wire-locking mechanism, technicians realised that vibration through the axle box had been causing bolts to loosen during service. Those wire-locks were replaced with Nord-Lock wedge-locking washers on the entire fleet of more than two-hundred cars. It’s easier to install, so there’s a cost-saving, but the wheel shop also benefitted from a safer, more reliable and repeatable process. www.nord-lock.com

// Since the introduction of the Nord-Lock washers we have not had one instance of a bolt coming loose, which gives us a lot of comfort from a safety point of view. // Conor Doyle, Senior Fleet Technical Support at Irish Rail

SHOW REVIEW TORQUE-EXPO UK TELFORD 2022

WHAT THE EXHIBITORS SAID… The first Torque-Expo since the pandemic took place in May, bringing the fastener, tool, fixing and related industries together after a long, disrupted period. We asked exhibitors for their views on what it was like to meet together on that scale again and for how the show went…

Mark Revak, Harrison & Clough:

“An exceptionally well organised event, great venue (brilliant staff) and hosted over a day which made it much more workable in today’s challenging environment. “It was great to see so many faces, new and old, from across the fastener industry come together and talk face-to-face again. The quality of attendee, dialogue and resultant leads and work was and continues to be hugely positive.”

Shelly-Ann Willetts, Brighton-Best: “We found the show to be really busy and it has proven to be extremely productive for us so far – the evening was good fun and a great networking opportunity. The whole event was fantastic and were already looking forward to next year.”

42

torque-expo.com

Katie Chambers, Deligo: “Torque-Expo Telford was absolutely amazing – we had plenty of help if we needed it. From this event, we have gained a lot of knowledge and experience. Thanks to this event, we have noted some ideas for us to use next time! Thank you for having us!”

Carly Pearson, Martyn Price Fasteners: “It was good to see some old (and new) faces after a couple of years of not seeing people. It was an enjoyable show and was good to have a few beers and catch up with people!”

Claire Jones, OGL: “It was great to finally see people face to face, the event gave us an opportunity to spend further time with our existing customers and meet prospects who are looking for innovative products and services that will help their business become more efficient and effective and drive down unnecessary costs. The team at Torque were very welcoming and we look forward to attending again in the future.”

Tim Dalton, Woods & Hughes: “After over two years of restrictions and lockdowns it was finally great to be back exhibiting, and the quality of visitors was superb. “Not only did we get the chance to interact with old customers and suppliers, we also got to meet new customers, and will, without doubt, benefit from the exhibition.”

THE COMBINED HEADER MASTERS Fresh from its appearance at Dusseldorf’s wire show, SACMA explains how its combined headers provide advantages to fastener manufacturers and reveals why it is reintroducing an old favourite to its range…

S

ACMA Group is well known for designing and manufacturing combined headers, which can produce fasteners from M4 to M24. So far, Sacma has provided more than 4,000 combined headers worldwide. So, how do SACMA combined headers work? All SACMA machines are fitted as standard with hydraulic clamping of die side adjustments: threaded sleeves, kick out levers and trimming cam. The M version, with motorised DKO adjustment, is an important system to reduce change-over time and to speed up the fine setting. The set-up data of each product code is stored in the PLC. On operator’s demand from the control panel, the machine can automatically adjust the feed length, the stock gauge position and the DKO stroke. Hydraulic clamping of adjustments and tools is a great help when setting the machine and assures accurate repeatability. The transfer mechanism of SACMA combined machines is reportedly considered the world benchmark, so much that it has been subject of many unsuccessful imitation attempts. The precise movement of the transfer fingers, determined by a smooth oscillating mechanism, generated by perfect desmodromic cams, provides the system with a perfect control of position, also at the maximal production speed. The multiple adjustments – timing of the transfer phase, variation of the clamping force, variation of the opening/closing speed of the fingers, together with the absence of springs – allow the safe transfer of long and short parts at the highest speed. Forming station

54

torque-expo.com

From the forming station, the parts are directed to the pointing station by means of a finger elevator which is easily adjusted in width according to the diameter of the shank. The adjustment is made by a micrometric system of easy access to the operator and is simple to implement. The forged parts are then fed to the pointing unit where the extremity of the shank will be machined. It is possible to produce points with different geometries and angles including the typical 90° robot point widely used in the automotive industry. From the pointing station the blanks are then fed to the flat die thread rolling station. Threading station

The threading station carries a flat die, alternating motion, main slide. A stop gate and a single starter blade system fitted at the end of the rails guarantees a perfect introduction of the blanks between the roll dies. The match adjustment of the threaded profiles can be obtained either by means of the eccentric mechanism of the connecting rod which drives the slide or by means of a wedge that provides vertical adjustment of the fixed die. The fixed die can be adjusted in all three directions. Calibrated hardened spacers are quickly fitted behind the fixed die according to the thread size for a quick changeover. The fixed die is manual or hydraulic depending on the size of the machine.

In addition, The V version of the combined headers has been designed for the production of very short fasteners. A shutter elevator feeds the blanks from the heading station to the bowl of a vibratory feeder, where the parts are correctly orientated and delivered by rails to the pointing unit. The pointed blanks thereafter go to the rolling station to form the thread. By means of dedicated devices, the pointing operation or the rolling operation can be bypassed, according to the process the customer intends to apply.

machine thanks to the fully motorised adjustments and the direct drive motor allowing the easy set-up of the threading station. • In the combined machine, with more operating units integrated in one soundproof enclosure, the cooling and lubricating oils are located in only one sealed area: no oil leakage, less pollution, clean and safe working place. • All SACMA machines are “quick plug in” equipment. The combined header is ready for production just a few hours after installation. • High flexibility to define and modify the factory layout. Only one machine has to be fixed to the floor and to be connected to the air plant and the power supply. • Only one motor for all operations is more efficient than several motors. Combined headers consume less than two machines and the monitoring of power consumption becomes more simple and convenient. • The forged parts, still warm and oiled, are delivered to the roller, so the flat dies last much longer, reducing the running costs and increasing production efficiency. 1D2B combined header model KSP12-R

SP18 combined header

In addition to the multi station combined headers, Sacma is re-introducing in its product line the 1D2B combined header to handle increased requests for small and self-tapping screws, widely used in different industry fields. This combined header can produce fasteners and screws for the automotive, construction, electric/ electronic, white goods industry, starting from wire. That’s the best solution for high productivity, consolidation of production methods, floor space utilisation and work flow in the fastener manufacturing process – by having the forming and thread rolling all in one machine. SACMA’s combined headers offer many advantages to fastener manufacturers: • The floorspace used by a combined header against a line of connected machines is normally one to three, consequently, more parts produced per area make the overall plant more profitable and efficient. • More often, one operator manages two or three small combined headers. • The combined machine is only one machine that performs more operations, therefore less maintenance is required. • Production changeover is faster with the SACMA combined

56

torque-expo.com

For the brand new SACMA combined header model KSP12R, these advantages allow the running of fasteners from M3 to M8 with a maximum shaft length of 60 mm in the optimum technical and economical way. The KSP12-R combines typical SACMA solutions, proven by thousands of machines, with the most advanced mechatronic technology available in the market. The one-piece main frame, pearlitic cast iron, normalised, natural aged for at least 12 months, high precision machined, is a guarantee of rigidity and stability for all machine life, says the firm. Main set-up adjustments are now motorised for a quick and friendly changeover: S-feed wire feeder driven by a torque motor, motorised wire stock gauge and DKO, threading starter driven by torque motor with self-learning function. Quality management is facilitated by two gates interfaced with the load monitoring system and discharging NC parts, after the header and after the roller. An optional sophisticated load control system protects the machine against overloads and monitors the forming and rolling processes. Scraps separating grids in different sizes are available when producing self-tapping screws. All the above features make the KSP12-R the best value for customers, says SACMA, allowing a quick pay back of investment. The durability of SACMA machines, together with the everlasting availability of spares, are the guarantee of longterm success and profit, it adds. www.sacmagroup.com

EXTRACTION ACTION SATA unveils its brand new extraction solution for rusted and rounded fasteners…

S

ATA is introducing two new sets of BoltBiter extraction tools that re-define fastener extraction, so says the brand. The new 23 pieces and 13 pieces sets include a 3/8 drive ratchet with quick release design for rapid socket removal. “Redefining fastener extraction” Removing rusted, rounded or stripped screw heads often proves to be time, effort and cost-effective. Thanks to their unique fastener gripping technology and bi-directional design SATA BoltBiter fastener extraction tools reliably remove stubborn nuts without damaging sockets and workpiece. Bi-directional means that the BoltBiter not only removes but also easily tightens any fastener, even severely damaged ones. “A unique feature of the BoltBiter socket are the innovative tapered flute openings,” explains Jan Scheeder, Product Manager Handtools EMEA. “The sockets thus grip instead of cutting the fastener and allow the socket to easily connect with the fastener. By this they eliminate the need for a striking tool and reduce the jamming in the socket compared to traditional extraction.” To fit a wide range of (damaged) fasteners the new BoltBiter extraction tool sets also comprise minus-sized sockets. Chrome molybdenium alloy steel and corrosion-resistant oxide finish extend the lifespan of the tools which come with a lifetime warranty. SATA is launching two new 23 pieces and 13 pieces BoltBiter sets including a 3/8 drive ratchet with quick release design for rapid socket removal. The flush mounted reversing lever Both the 23 and 13 piece BoltBiter sets come with a durable blow mould case for storage and organisation

allows users to change direction onehandedly without removing the wrench. Both sets come with a durable blow mould case for storage and organisation. ADVANTAGES AT A GLANCE • Bi-directional design removes or tightens damaged fasteners • Minus-sized sockets designed to fit extremely worn-down fasteners • Removed fasteners don’t jam in the socket • Innovative tapered flutes for easy seating onto a damaged fastener • Dual sized sockets work with both SAE and metric fasteners • High-visibility laser-etched markings for quick size identification • Square drive shaft (1/4 and 3/8”) • Hexagonal base for use with included ratchet, but also impact guns wrenches, or pliers • Chrome molybdenum alloy steel body for strength and durability • Corrosion-resistant black oxide finish • Lifetime warranty www.apextoolgroup.com

ASSURED CORROSION PROTECTION FOR

WIND ENERGY UNITS High-performance corrosion protection for screwed fasteners in high-tensile steel enables wind energy units to be largely maintenance-free. Zinc flake systems have proven their reliability in the area of rotor blade fastenings for over 30 years, writes Dörken…

T

he rotor blades are fundamental, key components of a wind energy unit. They are used to extract energy from flows of air and move it to the generator. The blade lengths of up to 85 metres and a weight of up to 25 tonnes mean that the fastening of the rotor blades to the rotor hub is particularly significant. This is achieved using fasteners, consisting of so-called double ends, barrel-nuts and hexagonal nuts, typically in the M30 to M36 dimension range.

Rotor blade fastener comprising double end, barrel nuts, hexagonal nuts and washers

Diverse stresses and requirements The rotor blades and thereby also their screwed fasteners are subjected to extreme climatic as well as dynamic stress from wind load and the operation of the unit itself. This is joined by static forces from prestressing of the bolts and the mass of the connected elements. As a consequence of the high level of stress for the screwed fasteners, the choice of corrosion protection is especially important. The protective coating needs to meet specified coefficients of friction in order to guarantee problem-free fastening on the construction site, typically with considerable time pressure and under difficult conditions. In addition, the coating must offer highly effective and long-lasting corrosion protection to ensure the long-term, reliable operation of the unit. Corrosion protection with multiple benefits The best solution is therefore a coating system, like the extremely thin zinc flake coatings from Dörken. It fulfils all of these requirements and consists of a basecoat and an organic or inorganic topcoat tailored to the respective components. The zinc-containing basecoat determines the corrosion properties and is responsible for the cathodic corrosion protection. In addition to adding further protection, the tailored topcoat enables the observance of

60

torque-expo.com

defined coefficients of friction and therefore safe and fast assembly. A further advantage of the zinc flake systems is that coated screws and bolts do not display setting behaviour, meaning that cost-intensive maintenance work is reduced and service life increased. Even the risk of application-related, hydrogeninduced stress corrosion cracking can be avoided, due to the fact that no hydrogen is involved in the coating process. In addition, the low cross-linking temperature of around 200°C avoids changes in the properties of the high-tensile components. The highly-effective and long-lasting corrosion protection offered by zinc flake systems is displayed in comprehensive outdoor weathering tests conducted at the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt) and the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM). Efficient coating The size of the rotor blade fasteners in particular means that the proven racked dip-spin procedure is advisable for coating the components. This application technology enables even highperforming protective coatings to be achieved. Following extensive pretreatment, at the beginning of this process the bolts or barrel nuts are fixed to a rack or multiple small supporting points, or alternatively placed individually in a basket with grids. After this, the unit is dipped in the coating material in the scope of a precisely defined process. This ensures that the smallest hollow spaces are reliably coated. After the rack has been removed from the bath, the centrifuge is utilised.

LIQUID HIGHTECH WORKS WHATEVER THE WEATHER Wind industry components are required to withstand tough conditions. Our zinc flake systems are therefore suitable for double-end bolts and rotor blade fasteners and hug every thread perfectly. Premium quality that withstands a range of stresses and enables longest maintenance intervals possible. However, we are not satisfied with the best, and are constantly on the look-out for new solutions and innovations - for every problem, for every challenge.

With the help of the spray can and the room temperature-curing zinc flake coating, transport or assembly damage can also be repaired afterwards.

The intensity and duration of this spinning process depends on the geometry and desired coat thickness of the parts. All excess material in the area of the interior spaces is effectively spun off. In the last step the entire unit including the rack is subjected to the drying and cross-linking process. Here, the coated parts are cured and cross-linked in a special oven with a defined temperature and duration. This results in an even and adhesive coating that enables problem-free and secure fastening to the rotor blades of the wind energy unit in subsequent use. In addition to the racked dip spin application, spray application is also used for coating the connecting elements. Both methods are used individually according to geometry and weight. This ultimately creates an even, adherent and durable anti-corrosion layer, which enables secure screwing to the rotor blades later in use. Zinc flake coating from the spray can In addition, Dörken also offers a room temperature-curing zinc flake coating from the spray can. This basecoat is also chromium VI-free and adheres very well. It is especially suited to the improvement of missing areas following the coating and treatment process, as well as the coating of small areas of component groups that are already in place. The coating cures

at room temperature after approximately 20 minutes and fulfils the high requirements of condensed water testing and salt spray testing according to DIN EN ISO 9227. In conclusion, high-performance coating solutions help to extend maintenance intervals and working life of wind energy units, whilst also increasing levels of efficiency. ONE STOP SHOP FOR WIND TURBINES From foundation to blades: Berdan Cıvata is now a partner for wind energy firms the world over, but this wasn’t always the case. Here, the company explains how it developed into an established partner in the sector...

O

ur Wind Energy adventure started with our participation in the HUSUM WIND 2009 exhibition. When we arrived there, we noticed Turkey’s flag alongside other country flags. We thought that the organiser hung all country flags as a goodwill gesture to whole countries but it wasn’t the case – the flags were there for participating exhibitors and we were the only company there from Turkey. We were proud of being there and we got a number of thanks from Turkish visitors and Turkey’s Commercial Attache. During the exhibition, we were charmed because companies in there were too big for us. We couldn’t imagine being able to knock on their doors before that show. We decided to focus on two companies at first; ALSTOM & NORDEX. This decision proved to be a milestone, at the time we couldn’t have guessed what we would go on to acheive. We knocked on the doors of ALSTOM & NORDEX and started to introduce ourselves and what we do. Our approval period took two years. We visited them three times and they came to visit us two times during this period. We worked hard to complete all required actions with audits and at the end of this, we were succesfully approved. This hard period took us to the next level because we had gained a different perspective on our quality. Thereafter, our approval from another giant wind company, VESTAS, took only three months, because we already learnt the importance of quality and what we had to, after that first time.

66

torque-expo.com

Forging new ground To be able to work in wind energy, we established Turkey’s first ISO EN 17025 accredited test laboratory in the sector, inhouse. We equipped it with the fasteners sector’s most impressive testing devices. In those times, blade lengths were up to 72 metres. We had a torque friction test device for up to M36 diameter bolts. This device was enough for the bolts used in the projects. However, in an audit by GE Renewable, the auditor said that while the torque test device was enough for now, the larger blades go up to 108 metres and when the time came this device wouldn’t be sufficent anymore. Then he added that he would expect to see a bigger capacity torque test device when he came to Berdan again in six months. Our chairman Mr. Hasan Şemsi, who is a senior mechanical engineer, accepted this expectation as a duty and within three months purchased one of Europe’s strongest torque friction devices and brought it into Berdan laboratory. Now, torque friction test is implemented up to M72 (inclusive) diameter bolts in the Berdan laboratory. Our impressive test device has a 500 tons capacity and is Europe’s strongest tensile test device. This device was designed and patented by Mr. Şemsi. Tensile tests can be implemented up to M72 (inclusive) diameter bolt with the device and a full body M72 diameter, 10.9 grade bolt breakage was observed at 438 tons by a third part auditor. There is an

From humble beginnings in the wind energy sector, Berdan has become an approved supplier to some of the industry’s biggest energy firms anecdote about this device: During another Husum Wind show which we exhibited at, we had a photo of this device and a broken bolt together with our laboratory accredition certificate. One representative from a global wind company visited the stand and asked Mr. Şemsi: “Have you had this accredition certificate and such a device really?” Mr. Şemsi replied: “If we hadn’t, how could I have shown these photos?” The SENVION Energy representative said: “I don’t need to come to Berdan for an audit. You have already been approved by GE Renewable from USA, ALSTOM and GAMESA from Spain, NORDEX, ENERCON and SIEMENS from Germany, and VESTAS from Denmark. But I will come to visit Berdan just to see this laboratory and the device.” He came and Berdan went on to become a supplier to SENVION too.

Berdan offers fasteners for everything from wind turbine foundations, to rotors and blades

Double ended threaded rod

Berdan’s patented surface treatment It is well known that wind turbines are generally placed far away from residential areas, on hills, mountains, in the sea or river sides, etc. Therefore, fasteners have to be resistant to extreme climate conditions. For that they need to surface treatments otherwise they can easily get rust, decay and lose its strength. And that would cause the toppling of topple of turbines. Berdan has surface treatment facilities in-house and hot-dipped galvanisation, electro galvanisation, zinc flake coating, teflon (xylan) coating and other coating types can be implemented to the surface here. While implementing hot-dipped galvanisation to high strength, structural fasteners, because of the carbonising risk due to acid cleaning, hot-dipped galvanisation becomes an unwelcome challenge for end users. Also, acid cleaning damages to human healths and ecosystem. While aiming to remove these damages and risks, our R&D team and Surface Treatment Facility engineers came together and found a Berdan patented new method. With this method, acid cleaning in hot-dipped galvanisation process was deactivated and thus the risk of hydrogen embrittlement was eliminated in addition to potential damage to employee health and the environment. So, we can say that the hydrogen embrittlement risk is “zero” on Berdan’s high strength, hot dipped galvanised structural fasteners. Together with announcing our ISO EN 17025 accredited test laboratory and hydrogen embrittlement risk zero hot dipped galvanised fasteners, we were faced with an incredible increase in our wind energy projects and business. Today, we are working with global wind energy players worldwide. We are proud of being a solution partner for; • Manufacturing ≈ 33.000 tons fasteners • For ≈ 9.000 MW/year produced clean energy • With ≈ 2,850 pcs wind turbines Our approved processes by wind companies are; • For foundations; anchors, plates and assemblied anchor cages • For towers; tower assembly bolts, nuts, washers • For nacelles; nacelle bolts, nuts • For rotors & blades; studbolts www.berdancivata.com

EXTENDING THE WIND TURBINE LIFECYCLE WITH

ROTORCLIP As the wind energy industry matures, the need to prevent wind turbine gear boxe ring failures, due to rotational movement, has become more pressing. Selecting the correct retention method can significantly extend the life of gear boxes, argues Rotorclip…

S

ince 2010, the global wind power cumulative capacity has exploded. 2018 saw an astounding 198% growth in global wind power capacity since the beginning of the decade, according to the Global Wind Energy Council. All of this impressive growth is making one of the biggest problems affecting the longterm sustainability of this industry even more apparent: Wind Turbine Gear Boxes are under-performing their expected lifecycle significantly. This comes at an incredible cost, both financially and in terms of energy production, as it is a time and labour-intensive project to repair – especially as modern wind farms are growing to employ hundreds of individual turbines. The lifecycle for the typical Wind Turbine Gear Box was designed to last about 20 years. A staggering 93% of these Gear Boxes are likely to fail within that 20 year mark. One of the simplest solutions to increasing the lifecycle of these Gear Boxes and their internal network of bearings is in selecting the appropriate retention methods to accommodate high power levels and variation in wind loads. In this article, Rotor Clip’s wave spring engineering expert, Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Elmar Kampmann, explains the three most common Gear Box failures, and how to select the correct retaining ring and wave spring to protect your application from these failures.

RENEWABLES WHITE PAPER

Why wind turbine gearboxes fail According to National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) former Chief Wind Turbine Engineer, Sandy Butterfield, today’s gearboxes only last an average of seven to 11 years, versus the 20 year designed lifetime expected from the average modern wind turbine. Gearbox maintenance is an expensive and labour-intensive activity, so reducing the failure rate on gearboxes is one of the biggest challenges facing this industry.

Enormous axial loads impact the gear box assembly, including bearings and planet gears in both directions. The bearing race wears; the resulting metal debris leads to bearing failure. These bearings are typically secured via retaining rings designed to eliminate such movement; though analysis shows this is not always successful. The rotational movement spins the ring in the groove, leading to failure of the ring and gearbox. There are three typical reasons for this unwanted movement, which are: 1. Bearings fit relatively loose in the bore. This guarantees easy assembly of large components typically used for wind turbines and balances possible thermal radial expansion during operation of the gear box. Such will not prevent rotational movements of the bearing because there isn’t sufficient friction between the outer race of the bearing and the surface of the housing. A retaining ring’s axial contact with the bearing causes the rotational movement of the ring, resulting in the failure. 2. A rotating gear is fixed by a retaining ring. As the axial friction between the gear wheel and the retaining ring is greater than the radial load of the ring and the friction between it and the groove, the ring will rotate. 3. Rotational movements can be caused by high dynamic torsional loads. As components in a turbine gear box are fixed by a retaining ring, and dynamic punctual axial loads are introduced, the ring rotates in the groove. This is not caused by the rotation of a retained component, but by the dynamic punctual axial loads exerted on the ring. Fortunately, there are various retaining ring types designed to eliminate these three primary movements described above; thereby increasing bearing life and improving performance.

1. PREVENTING ROTATION OF OUTER RACES OF BEARINGS If the application does not generate enough radial friction between the outer race and the surface of the housing, it should receive an axial load to prevent the race from rotating. A singleturn wave spring with a specific axial load will hinder the tendencies of the outer race and the retaining ring to rotate. A very precise load should be generated to guarantee nondestructive levels of force. A spiral-wound, flat-wire, singleturn wave spring can generate such a load. Alternatively, as depicted on the right (above), single-turn or two-turn wave rings can replace the retaining ring. These wave rings retain and pre-load the outer race of the bearing, streamlining the assembly process.

// Gearbox maintenance is an expensive and labour-intensive activity, so reducing the failure rate on gearboxes is one of the biggest challenges facing this industry. //

2. ROTATING GEAR & RETAINING RING Instead of a conventional retaining ring, a modified retaining ring can be used to solve the problem. A keystone assembled in the gap of the snap ring with an L-profile similar to the below ring image can prevent the ring from rotating. The bent end offers a nose which hinders the rotation. No additional keystone needs to be handled in the assembly process. Time and costs for machining the additional groove is comparatively less.

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT ROTOR CLIP’S CONSTANT SECTION RINGS Rotor Clip’s Constant Section Rings are incredibly dynamic, and can be manufactured to fit almost any need, with 16 “special” cut-off systems, as well as the option for a totally customised cut-off style to fit your application’s need, much like the ring depicted above with bent ends. 19 different standard ring types are manufactured, in both inch and metric options, as well as several rings conforming to DIN standards.

3. HIGH DYNAMICAL PUNCTUAL LOADS IN AXIAL DIRECTION Using a spiral wound constant section or multiple turn retaining ring offers an elastic effect in an axial direction, similar to a punching clown toy that has a tendency to return to its original upright position after being “punched” in one direction or another. Since this is a coiled part, it also eliminates sharp corners that can damage the shaft/housing. In that way the ring can withstand higher dynamic axial loads and not rotate in the groove.

IN CONCLUSION Improving the performance of wind turbines is an important industry objective as the market grows. Eliminating damaging movement through the prudent selection of a retaining ring in an important step in achieving that object. Rotor Clip is a global manufacturer of retaining rings for the wind power industry. These rings are made from high carbon steel and stainless steel in a variety of configurations to perform critical retention of bearings and other components in wind turbine assemblies. Rings can be made up to 1000mm in diameter to suit the specific requirements of any of these applications. Rotor Clip retaining rings are highly engineered components with tooling designed by our in-house engineering staff and built by our tool room. All processes are performed in-house including forming the rings according to exacting specifications and heat treating them in our own in-house furnaces designed specifically for retaining rings. The heat treating process is critical since the performance of the ring depends on reaching a pre-determined hardness condition, which is assured through computerised feeding mechanisms and strict quality checking procedures.

SPOTLIGHT FERDINAND GROSS

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES TOGETHER Handling screws and fasteners, C-parts managers ensure supply of some of the most basic elements in the industry. But how can supplies be secured in times of raw material shortages, limited transport capacities and anti-dumping duties? How do we overcome bottlenecks with safe supply chain management and high quality connections? Ferdinand Gross provides its perspective…

W

hether in healthcare, in the energy sector or in basic foodstuffs – the corona pandemic and now the war have abruptly brought the topic of basic services into focus. We realise that under certain conditions, any infrastructure can come under pressure and it is better not to take anything for granted. Unfortunately, this also applies to the industrial supply of C-parts, where a threatening mixture of capacity bottlenecks and skyrocketing prices in the transport and in the manufacture of raw materials, preliminary products and semifinished parts has formed in the last year and a half. As if all that weren't enough, the European Commission's anti-dumping tariff is yet another hurdle: With up to 86.5% tariffs on Chinese fasteners made of iron and steel, this important procurement market for Europe will fail in the future and the extremely tense supply situation will increase further tighten. More than ever, we are therefore asking ourselves how we can ensure that our customers are supplied on time, even under the most difficult conditions.

... and the spirit! However, it would not go far enough to look at the issue of security of supply solely from the process perspective. No management tool in the world can completely exclude all risks or unexpected needs from the outset. And this is where the right corporate and relationship culture comes into play. We like to talk about “High Quality Connections”, because what applies to every screw and every connecting element also applies to the connection to our customers: it must be of such quality and strength that it can withstand pressure situations without any problems. For us, this means remaining uncomplicated even with complex problems, being honest about our own mistakes and looking for solutions constructively and flexibly. In order for our employees to be able to act as creative problem solvers, the right structures are of course required. Individual freedom, short distances, uncomplicated decision-making processes – everything that has always distinguished us as an owner-managed, medium-sized company is turning out to be incredibly valuable right now. Because it allows us the type of trusting, flexible and cooperative partnership that makes our C-parts management crisis-proof and successful. Or as one of our long-standing customers put it quite aptly the other day: “In times like these, it becomes clear who is just a supplier and who is a real partner.”

A question of the system... As the market-experienced C-parts specialist with over 150 years of company history, we at Ferdinand Gross rely on active, customer-specific risk management. There is a fourstage cycle process behind Safe Supply Chain Management. It starts with the customer-specific identification and commuwww.schrauben-gross.com nication of C-parts that are at risk of bottlenecks. Strategic procurement options are then developed and, together with the customers, rated. In the case of a single-source strategy, this may involve adjusting supply contracts and stocking larger contingents, while in a multisource approach, developing and accrediting new, ideally geographically dispersed, suppliers may be an option. After the implementation of the selected strategy the process finally moves to monitoring. Ongoing risk monitoring with regular briefings between purchasing, sales and customers keeps the entire "In times like these, it becomes clear who process running and is the basis is just a supplier and who is a real partner." for the success of our Safe Supply Chain Management.

STRONG STANDARDS Construction standards vary from Europe to the US but having products that meet and excel the different accreditations is a must for manufacturers. Here are some of the products that are approved for different applications.

EJOT FM Approved flat roofing fasteners combinations FM Approvals Standard 4470. This provides additional certification to support the products and maintain their worldwide use in the flat roofing market. As a result, EJOT can present greater flexibility and security for OEMs globally, with design data being available not just within the ETA but from the FM Roofnav design database (www.roofnav.com). Kevin Rackley, Product Manager for membrane system fasteners at EJOT UK said: “FM Approval adds another quality dimension to our most widely used single ply flat roofing fastener/washer combinations, confirming the standards we have already demonstrated in Europe and giving specifiers and OEMs across the globe a recognised seal of approval. “FM Approval has become an increasingly important factor for investors and building owners throughout Europe who are demanding the American quality certificate, so it was only right that we as a responsible OEM that we responded to the market needs by gaining approval. “It will also support the use of our products in international construction projects where FM Approval can be a major factor, particularly where there is a requirement in the tendering process in order to comply with FM Global's insurance standards.” Construction and industrial fastening systems manufacturer EJOT has added another significant quality standard to many of its flat roofing fastener and washer combinations by gaining approval from American testing institute, FM Global. The internationally recognised FM Approval on a significant number of EJOT single ply flat roofing products corresponds with, and complements, the company’s existing European Technical Approval (ETA), confirming the safety, reliability and durability of the flat roofing product combinations. Importantly, unlike the European assessments that focus on the individual product’s performance capabilities, the FM Approval process looks at the complete assembly by testing an entire roofing system – the fastener, substructure, insulation material and roof sheet. The EJOT fastener and washer combinations tested include the EcoTek tube-washer with FBS-R fastener, which is a popular choice for attaching membrane and insulation to concrete, as well as TKR/TKE fasteners with the HTK 2G 50 tubewasher. This is typically used when attaching insulation and a single layer waterproof membrane to a steel or plywood deck. Eurotec ETA approved wood construction screws

KonstruX fully threaded screw Eurotec's KonstruX fully threaded screw is a popular and highstrength fastener for easily pulling and connecting wooden components together. This happens especially where high forces have to be transmitted – even in small spaces. With the help of fully threaded screws, wood connections in constructions can be reinforced and firmly fixed. In addition, they offer a practical and economical alternative to other wood connectors such as joist hangers, joist supports or hanging connectors. The KonstruX screw is ETA approved. The KonstruX fully threaded screw is a high performance

solution for new construction and refurbishment. When using fully threaded screws, the main focus is to stress them in tension. Diagonal screw connections at a 45° angle in timber construction are particularly suitable for this. High forces can thus be absorbed by a single screw. According to the European Technical Assessment predrilling is not necessary. The stainless-steel screws are for use in timber structures subject to the conditions defined by the service classes 1, 2 and 3 (Eurocode 5). www.eurotec.team

CELO ResiTHERM® with ETA approval

ResiTHERM 16 used in an awning construction With ResiTHERM 16, CELO Befestigungssysteme has developed a new innovative distance mounting system for ETICS insulated facades. ResiTHERM 16 is reportedly the first product of its kind with an ETA (European Technical Assessment) on the market. With the ResiTHERM 16, heavy loads such as canopies, awnings, French balconies, air-conditioning units or satellite dishes can be safely and reliably attached to the external insulation – without thermal bridge. The thermal separation

module ensures effective thermal separation. The high-quality polyamide with a high glass-fibre content provides the necessary stability. And the preassembled sealing ring made of highquality, weather-resistant EPDM provides a tested seal against driving rain; with the usual grain size of the plaster, up to a deflection of 3 mm. The simple installation process is also worth mentioning: the anchor rod with the glass-fibre-reinforced thermal separation module pulls itself self-cutting through the plaster into the insulation material, at the same time ensuring a perfect setting process with the chemical mortar compound and, last but not least, cleanly seals the drill hole through the EPDM seal. The result is a clean look with a relatively small diameter of the cover plate. The ResiTHERM 16 can be used in insulated facades made of concrete, solid and perforated masonry as well as aerated concrete. It covers insulation thicknesses of up to 300 mm in concrete or 250 mm in perforated masonry. For smaller insulation thicknesses, the M16 anchor rod is cut to length accordingly. It is used together with the ResiFIX injection system from CELO. The connection thread is an M12 thread. However, an M12/M10 reducing set screw or a common stainless steel screw can also be used. CAN I USE NORD-LOCK WEDGE-LOCKING WASHERS ON PAINTED SURFACES? Nord-Lock is often asked about securing bolted connections where parts have painted surfaces, something relevant to many applications and industries. The answer depends on the type of coating used and how it’s applied, though in general there are a few practical challenges to overcome. Nicholas Lundkvist EMEA Product Specialist for Nord-Lock explains further… he most common issues are a loss of preload over time due to settlements and relaxation in the paint, or corrosion problems caused due to wear at the point of assembly and breakages in the paint. The rotation caused when tightening/untightening the bolted joints with traditional fasteners can also tear up the coating. Different industries have varying criteria for coatings, but some of the most demanding applications and the thickest paints can be found in offshore industries such as oil & gas, wind farms, solar farms and shipping. These must preserve steel constructions in a cost-effective way and protect against the corrosive nature of harsh ocean environments. These industries often use ‘active’ coatings containing aluminium and zinc, elements providing a chemical resistance to corrosion in steel structures by acting as an anode in the electric cell. Other non-active coatings create an impenetrable layer to shield the construction from the corroding elements, but when this coating breaks down, the construction is exposed and starts to weaken. To assemble a bolted joint, you are creating a rotation of the bolt, nut and perhaps washers. This rotation can cause damage to painted surfaces. The rotational behaviour of these ingoing parts also determines the impact on the coating, so Nord-Lock Group has been carrying out tests on different bolting methods to learn more in this area.

T

With no washer Assembling a bolt without any washers concentrates the rotation directly between the bolt and the painted surface, and it is evident that the high torque used to preload the bolt will damage the paint. With flat washers Adding a flat washer lowers the rotation against the surface but does not guarantee that all rotation takes place between the bolt and the washer. Instead, it is random and therefore hard to predict the level of damage on the coating. With Nord-Lock washers Nord-Lock wedge-locking washers are designed to control the rotation between the upper washer and the nut during assembly, so this keeps the painted surface more intact. The outer faces of Nord-Lock washers are also serrated to grip both the clamped parts and the underside of the bolt head — securing the joint. Impression marks from the serrations on both surfaces can be seen when untightening the bolt, verifying the wedge-locking effect that prevents bolts from spontaneously loosening. You might expect these serrations to destroy the paint during assembly, but the tests prove several positive impacts instead. Because the serrations press slightly into the paint,

// Nord-Lock recommends using a wedge-locking washer with a larger outer diameter as it distributes the load over a larger surface area. This is gentler for sensitive surfaces and achieves a more even clamping, negating settlements to some extent. //

settlements in the bolted joint are decreased compared to applying a flat washer — hence the desired preload will be better preserved in the bolted connection. When exposed to vibrations, the design of Nord-Lock washers also directs movement to between the two washers, so there is no rotational impact on the coating during vibrations. The wedge-locking effect also ensures preload is kept to a high and safe level, something which is not achieved with the other solutions. Best practices We recommend working in this order: 1. Assemble parts 2. Secure the bolted connections 3. When properly tightened, finally apply the coating This would give a better guarantee of a secure and corrosion resistant bolted joint for painted surfaces, but sometimes this process is overlooked as it can be too expensive or impractical in the field. As our tests find, the risk of coating before bolting is that some locking methods cannot maintain preload because of settlements and relaxation in the paint, or the paint is broken when tightening the bolt and your parts are then also exposed to corrosion. Although there is much to consider, our findings in this test do give a reliable indication that using Nord-Lock wedge-locking washers will have a more positive impact, compared to the alternatives, on the security of bolted connections when used in these scenarios.

84-85 FOCUS - Nuts Washers & Locking Systems - HEICO TOR065 2022.qxp 24/06/2022 17:32 Page 1

TORQUE FOCUS NUTS, WASHERS AND LOCKING SYSTEMS

HEICO ON SELF-LOOSENING PREVENTION HEICO-LOCK® wedge locking systems meet railway industry standard DIN 25201-4, providing the reliable locking of dynamic bolted joints. HEICO takes us through the basics and reveals how innovation is designing out installation error…

H

igh demands are placed on bolted joints, particularly in safety critical environments such as the rail industry. With increased knowledge and understanding of the process of bolted joints loosening under vibrations and dynamic loads, bolt locking elements are often used in several different applications in the railway sector. It is therefore not surprising that the railway industry has implemented general design guideline on bolted joints for railway vehicles and the rolling stock industry. This design guideline is described and specified under DIN 25201. The securing of bolted joints is described in Part 4 of DIN 25201 as an individual chapter, which underlines the importance of that particular topic. In Part 4, a general classification of securing elements is given in a total of three different securing categories: locking elements against setting, locking elements that prevent the parts from falling apart (loss prevention systems) and systems that prevent the bolted connection from turning loose (self-locking systems). Bolt locking devices need to be tested on its function to be properly categorised. Normally, to determine a proper selflocking behaviour of a locking element, a vibration test according to DIN 65151, which is also called a ‘Junker’ test, is performed. DIN 25201 Annex B provides a standardised guideline on how the general test parameters should be set in such a Junker vibration test, which ensures accurate and consistent test conditions and evaluation.

All bolt locking devices from HEICO-LOCK® series are according to railway industry standard DIN 25201-4.

84

torque-expo.com

Several bolt locking products have lost their approval as selfloosening prevention systems due to failing the standardised tests on the Junker test bench. Spring lock washers (DIN 127), serrated lock washers (DIN 6798/DIN6908) and lock nuts (DIN7967) were withdrawn as self-loosening systems due to improper securing characteristics. These products might prevent a total loss of the bolted joint, but not the self-loosening of a fastener in general. If a bolt connection has already come loose and is therefore only hanging by a thread, sooner or later a breakage is to be expected due to the increased load of the bolt.

// High demands are placed on bolted joints, particularly in safety critical environments such as the rail industry. // The bolt locking products from German manufacturer HEICO meet the official requirements for self-loosening prevention systems and are continuously tested in accordance with current guidelines such as DIN 25201-4 and DIN EN ISO 16047. The tests are carried out in the company’s own test laboratory as well as by independent test institutes such as IMA Dresden, the Frauenhofer Institute or the DIBt.

84-85 FOCUS - Nuts Washers & Locking Systems - HEICO TOR065 2022.qxp 24/06/2022 17:32 Page 2

The user-friendly HEICO-LOCK® combi-washers enable an easy pre-assembly of bolt and lock washer, which leaves your hands free to focus on the actual assembly.

In addition to the proven wedge lock washers, all products from the HEICO-LOCK® series meet the requirements for effective and sustainable bolt locking. The locking system consists of two single washers combined as pairs and is based on the wedge locking principle. The outer radial ribs of the washer pairs are pressed into the mating material when the bolt connection is preloaded. At the same time, the opposing wedges at the inside prevent the bolt from loosening. The HEICO-LOCK® wedge locking nuts (pictured right) also work according to this wedge locking principle. The wedge lock nuts are a one-piece design consisting of a hexagonal flange nut and a wedge lock washer pair which are secured together in a captive and rotatable combination. In this way, bolts can be secured easily, quickly and reliably. Instead of a separate nut and washer pair, only one product is required to provide a permanent and safe bolted connection. Family-owned HEICO prides itself on a high level of innovation. The R&D

department is constantly working on new products and variations that are becoming more and more user-friendly in their application. The patented HEICO-LOCK® combi-washers are particularly user-friendly. This product variant is a wedge lock washer pair held together by an internal blue plastic ring. This ring ensures correct installation of the wedge lock washers at all times, even when used by nonspecialist staff. But this is not the only advantage. The combi-washers can be attached to the bolt before assembly. Small winglets on the inner plastic ring ensure that the washers do not slip off the bolt and get caught on the bolt thread. The option of pre-assembling the bolts and washers leaves your hands free for the actual assembly process. This saves time and often also stress. As a service-oriented company, HEICO can also offer, on demand, the assembly process of the washers with suitable bolts. www.HEICO-GROUP.com

TORQUE FOCUS TOOLS MADE IN GERMANY

HELLER’S PREMIUM RANGE CUTS THROUGH Jigsaws and reciprocating saws: Heller presents new premium range

H

eller Tools GmbH employs around 200 highly qualified staff at its site in Dinklage, Germany, with sales offices and exports worldwide (to 60 countries). Winning several internationally renowned design awards, the Heller Tools product catalogue of drills is increasingly comprehensive, with drills for concrete, stone, metal, wood and many special materials as well as chisels, diamond tools, circular, jigsaw and reciprocating saw blades, multitools and bits. Amongst the very newest additions to the Heller line up is its freshly relaunched jigsaw and reciprocating saw range. With new products and a unique packaging concept, Heller now offers a leading range of jigsaws and reciprocating saws. The saws can be used for various materials such as wood, metal, plastics and composites. The wide range for standard applications is supplemented by innovative problem solvers, such as carbide-tipped special saws for aerated concrete or diamond-coated saws for particularly hard gunmetal. Accordingly, the right product is available for every application. With its range of jigsaws and reciprocating saws, Heller demonstrates its outstanding customer focus. To enable the professional user to find the right product quickly and easily, the premium tools manufacturer has chosen a unique packaging design for its saws. The product packaging integrates both the dimensions of the saws and the material suitability using a colour coding system. The suitability is shown according to the colours blue for metal, yellow for wood and grey for special and universal suitability. Not only the packaging, but also the jigsaws and reciprocating saws are marked with the colour codes. This makes it easy to identify the right saw for the desired application. In addition to the smart features, the high-quality jigsaws and reciprocating saws are particularly impressive due to their superior performance with precise cuts, so says Heller, adding that they are adapted to all common machines and therefore guarantee a high degree of flexibility. Compared to other cutting

Precise cuts with the high-quality jigsaws and reciprocating saws from Heller

Heller’s packaging makes it easy for customers to choose the right product for the job info methods, processing with jigsaws and reciprocating saws has the great advantage that there are no flying sparks, especially when processing metal, so that work can also be carried out in sensitive areas. Heller is part of the Serafin group of companies which, with companies in Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Great Britain, achieves a turnover of around 900 million euros and employs over 5,000 people. Serafin is a Munich-based group of companies whose philosophy goes back to more than 150 years of entrepreneurial tradition of the Haindl family. www.hellertools.com
