CONDITIONS FOR INNOVATION TO THRIVE SUSTAINABILITY has, by accident, cropped up as a topic quite a bit in this current issue of Torque Magazine. Our Guest Editor does a fine job of expressing how innovation has helped his company come up with a way to help reduce its carbon footprint. More than that, through its products it is helping end users be more sustainable too. And there are plenty of other examples of leading companies using R&D and innovation to come up with new solutions to be more environmentally friendly (see page 81, for example). Seeing innovation as the key to overcoming challenges is hardly unique to the fastener industry, but in such an engineering and solution-orientated sector its often the first port of call. Sometimes big changes are thrust upon us, giving us little option but to adapt, such as the recent and vast challenges posed by Covid19. But other times require innovators in R&D departments, sales offices and in the warehouse to step up and work their magic. The trick is ensuring your company or department has the right conditions to empower staff to innovate. Key developments can be as likely to come from the shop floor as from the higher echelons. The kind of business that gives employees space to speak up (and be listened to) is surely the mark of a thriving operation.

GUEST EDITOR COMMENT CHRISTIAN BECK, CEO AND GENERAL MANAGER BECK

THE FUTURE OF TIMBER CONSTRUCTION Ecological, Sustainable Fastening Technology The transformation towards more sustainability and the development of recyclable products instead of the "take, make, dispose" attitude are the challenges of the hour. Particularly in industries such as fastener technology, which predominantly uses CO2-intensive materials such as steel. To collectively achieve NetZero by 2050, it will require not only massive efforts in innovative, sustainable manufacturing processes of steel, but also sustainable alternatives to conventional fasteners that make the use of steel obsolete in as many areas as possible. Innovation and attitude as drivers for a sustainable future As a company, it is our obligation to do everything possible within our sphere of influence, i.e. within our own company, our sites and of course also in fastening technology, to make a difference for the future with our innovative strength. Nine years ago we made a conscious decision to replace our conventional steel and metal fasteners, which after all leave a significant carbon footprint, with ecological, sustainable and sensible alternatives in as many applications as possible. Our vision is to revolutionise all woodworking companies, especially wood construction, and to make them greener. The stated goal: to enable all these companies to implement their construction projects without glue and metal and thus much more sustainably than ever before. LIGNOLOC® – fastening technology rethought That's where our development LIGNOLOC® comes in – the first collated nail system made from the renewable raw material beech wood, with which we have brought back a sustainable, traditional fastener and developed it to meet today's requirements and change

the future of construction for good. Whether indoors, outdoors or in corrosive environments, our shootable wood nail can be used in many applications such as timber frame construction, façade construction, massive wood structures or interior cladding. We are continuously working on expanding the system. The nails are available in various diameters and lengths and this year have become available with a head designed for outdoor use. The main application of the new wooden nail with head is horizontal and vertical wood cladding, because the head also holds façade panels securely in position outdoors. Thanks to its blunt anti-splitting point, it is suitable for the most common softwood façades as well as other exterior applications. For the portfolio of nails, there are two handheld tools and two nailing heads for robots or portal CNC machines for stationary applications. Wooden nails in automation With our partner KEHRATEC, a leading specialist in camera-guided robot automation, we are working on the next project around LIGNOLOC®, the development of a robot-assisted system. We want to give small and medium-sized timber construction companies and carpentries chance to manufacture massive wood elements themselves. We will do this through the fully or partially automated realisation of timber construction projects, through the pre-assembly of glue- and metal-free wall and ceiling elements. This sustainable system also saves costs and transport routes. This year's Circular Globe Label for circular economy and the German Innovation Award in Gold for new, forward-looking technologies not only make us proud, but are a powerful motivational boost to pursue our vision and make fastening technology more sustainable, more efficient and simply better overall.

PRODUCT AVAILABILITY IS IMPROVING BUT INFLATION IS HIGH

I

n July, a joint statement from cochairs of the UKbased Construction Leadership Council’s Product Availability working group has stated that product availability is improving across the industry and demand is expected to remain strong for the rest of the year. The average inflation for products and materials is around 23%. The statement from John Newcomb, CEO of the Builders Merchants Federation and Peter Caplehorn, CEO of the Construction Products Association, revealed that manufac turers are largely keeping up with demand although longer lead times are still evident in some cases, such as with bricks, aircrete blocks, some roof tiles and gas boilers. Inflation is a cause for concern on a number of fronts with the average figure for products and materials around 23%, with further price increases predicted due to rising energy

costs. Recruitment and wage inflation are also an issue. The statement confirms issues Torque Magazine reported on following a number of price increase letters distributed by brands to customers in recent weeks. Read more at www.torque-expo.com

MALLORY CRAVENS NICHOLS

ADVANCE COMPONENTS

Mallory Cravens Nichols, Vice President of Business Development at Advance Components, board member of WIFI and current President of the Young Fastener Professionals discusses her evolving career as she takes part in the latest Women in Fasteners feature with Torque Magazine…

14

torque-expo.com

How did you get into the industry? My grandfather started Advance Compo nents 50 years ago, so in a way, I have always been around the industry. When I was growing up, I spent many summers working in the warehouse and bagging parts. After college, I took a job in software sales and then about four years ago, I decided to come over to Advance Components full time.

Mallory Cravens Nichols has recently taken on a new role as VP of Business Development at Advance Components What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and company since you started? I’ve noticed an increased effort to represent and include minorities that have historically been underserved. Also, less resistance to the adoption of new technology. Lastly, there’s a trend of small companies being purchased and consolidated under larger ones. I consider myself an advocate for change and growth, so I’m excited to see where everything leads. Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far? I started at Advance Components as a Regional Sales Manager and have recently taken on a new role as VP of Business Development. I am also very involved in industry associations. I have sat on the YFP Board for three years and am serving as the president for 20222023. I am part of the WIFI Board as well and help with events and social media. As President of the Young Fastener Professionals, can you tell us what you have planned? Happily! We have three new board members that are adding a lot of energy and fresh perspective. In addition, we have a couple of board members who have put in a lot of work building the YFP foundation over the last few years. It’s been a really exciting year so far and we are in the process of launching both our regional coordinator program and the mentorship program. The goal of our regional coordinator model is to create a network of young professionals across the country that act as an advocate and resource on a local level. Through these coordinators, we hope to support attendance at regional industry events and extend our reach to more young industry professionals. Our mentorship program will focus on creating opportuni ties for growth and professional development for our young members, while also creating industry synergy and an oppor tunity to pass on knowledge. What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry? The fastener industry is very unique compared with any other industry I’ve been a part of. It’s very close and almost feels like a big family. Why did you get involved in Women in the Fastener Industry (WIFI)? Another unique thing about the fastener industry is the amount of associations. There are a lot of people out there that

// I consider myself an advocate for change and growth, so I’m excited to see where everything leads. // want to give back to make the industry better as a whole. That’s something I love and want to be a part of. I decided to get involved with WIFI specifically because I believe in what they’re doing to support the women of our industry – women supporting women is a powerful thing! What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the fastener industry? The way to get more women involved in our industry starts with hiring and internships. It’s important for companies to actively hire women and not limit their opportunities. Women should be equally considered for every job, especially ones that have been historically or are majorly held by men. www.advancecomponents.com

ATLAS COMMERCE

Dezbah Duchicela’s involvement in the fastener industry occurred in a roundabout way. As the CEO & Founder of Atlas Commerce, she saw the need for an eCommerce solution that worked for fastener manufacturers and distributors as she discusses with Torque Magazine… 16

torque-expo.com

How did you get into the industry? What prompted you to found Atlas Commerce? Prior to founding Atlas, I spent over 15 years in eCom merce, and helped design and build two eCommerce solutions at leading companies (Salesforce and SAP). I saw a need for an eCommerce solution that was built specifically for manufacturers and distributors that was powerful but also easy to set up and use. Manufacturers and distributors have a lot of unique needs when selling online. A lot of eCommerce products

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS Dezbah Duchicela joined WIFI to give back her technology expertise and believes in the importance of having a network where you feel like you belong. either aren’t powerful enough or aren’t easy to set up and administer. It’s very hard to be both. One of the reasons for this is that a lot of legacy eCommerce software is based on older technology and wasn’t designed to be easy to set up and use. I started the company with the idea that we would always put the customer first. What that means in practice is building a product that’s easy to set up and easy to use on a day today basis. And that has powerful features based on the most modern technology. And because I knew what customers needed from my past experience, we were able to hit the ground running when we started the company. The fastener industry was a natural fit for a product like this. Selling fasteners online requires a lot of features that other industries don’t always need, and there’s a huge demand by customers to get online quickly. What does your day-to-day job involve? As CEO and founder of Atlas, I spend almost all my time on three things: Delivering value for our customers – As CEO, my first priority is to be a champion for our customers. I spend a lot of time working with customers and industry leaders to under stand their needs. What challenges they’re facing, and how they can best compete in a market that’s quickly going digital. Product Strategy – To accomplish the goals above, we have to understand what our customers need. Ultimately, that means understanding the problem they’re trying to solve when they purchase B2B eCommerce software. I spend a lot of time thinking about how we provide our customers with the best software on the market and give them the best onboard ing experience when they purchase Atlas Commerce. Team and Culture – To provide the best possible experi ence for our customers, and the best possible product, takes hiring and retaining the best people. A lot of time and energy goes into hiring the right people, who are excited to solve the problem we set out to solve. The industry is rapidly changing, and the hardest part of my job is how and where I prioritise my time. What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and company since you started? The pace of digitisation has really increased over the last two years. Covid accelerated the move to go online that was already underway. Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far? Launching our product and getting our first customers live. Even with the most modern technology, it’s still a lot of work to build a product that accomplishes the goal of being easy to use and set up and powerful enough for the fastener industry. We also closed a significant amount of funding a few months ago from the best investors in the Bay Area, which is a chal lenging task, and even more so for womanowned businesses. I think they saw the value we were creating for customers and wanted to be a part of that.

18

torque-expo.com

What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry? It is a tight knit community. We have some of the smartest and hardworking people in the country providing products that are essential to keep our economy going. And I think the importance of the industry and the work people here do is sometimes lost on people outside of the industry and can sometimes be underappreciated.

// The fastener industry was a natural fit for a product like this. Selling fasteners online requires a lot of features that other industries don’t always need, and there’s a huge demand by customers to get online quickly. // Why did you get involved in Women in the Fastener Industry? I have always been one of the only women in the career paths I have chosen throughout my life. Something I did from the very early on (starting in college) was always join women focused organisations. I joined WIFI to give back my technology expertise to the group. I help with both the newsletter and their website. What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the fastener industry? I believe strongly in two areas that can help encourage more women. The first is that we should continue to sponsor and encourage women to take career development classes. Classes give women the confidence and the skills to excel at their job. If I know that I am providing value and doing a good job, I will want to continue in the same industry because I can see a career progression. The second are groups like WIFI. I was a complete outsider to the industry, but I went up to Jen Kushnir. She was such a friendly person to chat with during one of my first conferences. It’s so important to have a network and to have a group where you feel like you belong. www.atlas-commerce.com

INTERVIEW WOMEN IN FASTENERS

JEN KUSHNIR

D.L.P. COATINGS INC. Jen Kushnir has had a lengthy career in the fastener industry and is a long-standing member of WIFI. As Sales Manager at D.L.P. Coatings Inc. and WIFI’s current Chairwoman of the Board she takes part in the latest Women in Fasteners feature with Torque Magazine… How did you get into the industry? Right out of high school I started working for a small family business that catered to the electrical industry. There were two divisions of the business; electrical components and tools was one division and fasteners were the other. I worked almost exclusively for the fastener division and would purchase quar ter keg boxes of sheet metal screws and repackage them into various package counts and created electrical kits. One day I was approached by my inside sales rep that his fastener company had an opening for an inside salesperson that came with better pay and benefits... and the rest is history! I have been in the fastener industry since 1997. I temporarily left the industry in January of 2009 for a few years but ultimately came back as it was what I knew best. What does your day-to-day job involve? Sales is a large portion of my daytoday which also entails being the liaison between my customer and our plant, plant operations, purchasing, marketing, and some light accounting. What are the biggest changes you have seen in the industry and company since you started? In the industry; fastener veterans retiring, many acquisitions, navigating the pandemic. However, witnessing more women advance into high level positions throughout our industry is likely the biggest change I’ve witnessed and it’s amazing to see! For my company, seeing the doubledigit growth has been aweinspiring. Can you share some of your career highlights and milestones so far? Milestone: Working for over half my life in the fastener indus try. But a career highlight is WIFI’s 10year anniversary in

2019 and it was the first association to ever grace the cover of Link Magazine. That was by far one of the most memorable highlights of my career so far. What is your favourite thing about the fastener industry? The people by far! Why did you get involved in Women in the Fastener Industry? Seeing as the industry was considered male dominated for so long, I was craving camaraderie with other women in our sector. I wanted to be part of something, not be just an employee, where I could give back in a more meaningful way. Some of the current and past Board of Directors have become some of the most special friendships in my life, we are a sister hood, and you can’t ask for better support than us. What do you think needs to be done to encourage more women to get involved in the fastener industry? If more fastener companies would offer a Mentorship programme and opportunities for educational scholarships (which most industry associations already provide), I believe more women would feel empowered to seek gainful employ ment in the fastener industry. Any final thoughts? Take the leap of faith no matter how much it scares you. I had no idea my job right out of high school would have progressed into a lifelong career! SPOTLIGHT BASS TOOLS

THREADING TOOLS FOR HARD MATERIALS If you’re facing the challenge of cutting threads in hard materials on short production runs with little chance for optimising tools, then BASS has a number of solutions for you… hen it comes to tool and mouldmaking, the user mainly faces hard materials. For the machining of internal threads this poses an extraordinarily challenging issue – especially when taking into mind that the components in question are often complex and usually in small lot sizes only. This means there is not much of a chance of optimising the tool during manufacturing compared to during serial production. Here the German threading specialist BASS comes into play. With over 75 years of experience in the development, production and application of threading products the company offers a wide range of well tested and optimised tools. No matter which thread size or type of dimension, BASS will supply the right tooling solution for hardened dies, as well as for forms or standard parts.

W

Short for stability > VARIO SH TICN SR Although rather short for reasons of higher stability, the VARIO SH TICN SR stands out as a cutting tap for materi als with a hardness of 48 up to 63 HRC. Its cutting geometry provides short chips, which makes the machining of both through and blind holes possible. The short overalllength of the tool according to DIN21842 (reduced length) in combination with the straight flutes ensure maximum stabil ity when machining. The fact that it is made of solid carbide and coated with TICN comes in handy when dealing with the requirements of tool and mouldmaking, providing a long tool life and reliability. The VARIO SH TICN SR is available as a catalogue product starting M4 up to M16 and outside the catalogue in every other dimension and thread type. VARIO SH SR – Cutting tap for different materials up to 63 HRC.

ZBGF – Thread milling cutter for drilling and thread milling in only one operation.

Circular thread milling cutter > ZBGF H For those that prefer milling, the counterpart is the circular thread milling cutter ZBGF H, which allows you to carry out drilling and thread milling without tool change and in only one operation. Like the VARIO SH TICN SR the ZBGF H is suited for materials up to 63 HRC. Due to the manufacturing process an exact thread depth of up to 1.5xP to the hole bottom is possible. The short milling chips produced during machin ing are removed in the direction of the shank. The ZBGF has straight flutes and is lefthand cutting which are the best prerequisites for achieving high tool life in synchronous milling. The tool benefits from the properties of the BA coating. This coating is wear resistant, extremely heat resistant and shows a high level of hardness. In a series of tests, BASS was able to prove that the geometry of the milling cutter in combination with the BAcoating is superior to a milling cutter type with internal coolant. With a ZBGF, a range of different thread dimensions with the same pitch can be realised, e. g. M10 and M12x1.5. It is used in varied mate rials, all tolerances and for the production of lefthand or righthand threads. For its applica tion, the circular thread milling cutter requires the same conditions that are already known from conventional thread milling. www.bass-tools.com Scan this QR code to see the ZBGF H in action...

SHOW REVIEW WIRE DUSSELDORF There’s a “historic technological transformation” underway in the carbon-hungry steel industry.

WIRE FACES UP TO STEEL’S CARBON FOOTPRINT

As if it was needed, this summer’s extreme heat and wildfires drove home the need for humans to reduce their carbon emissions. So where does that leave the fastener supply chain, including the production of steel – one of the major polluters of Europe and beyond?

Y

ou wait years for a geopolitical crisis and then several come along at once. At one time it seemed like Covid would have been the main talking point at any trade show when they finally returned, but the pandemic has been joined by an array of troubling challenges, like fragmented supply chains and war. One of the big challenges that has been brewing for quite some time has been the ever more pressing need to reduce carbon footprints. To the credit of the industry, becoming more sustain able was high on the agenda at the Dusseldorfset wire show. Daniel Ryfisch, Project Director of wire/Tube and Flow Tech nologies, said: “Indepth conversations about the current chal lenges associated with the global energy transition, new requirements made on machines and equipment – and all of this considering sustainability aspects – the need for discussion among exhibitors and visitors in the exhibition halls was enormous.” Opportunities for, and avenues towards, a green transforma tion were discussed at the wire and Tube Expert Meeting in Hall 3 over two days. Here, key industry players like Salzgitter AG, thyssenkrupp Steel, thyssenkrupp Material Services Processing, ArcelorMittal, Heine + Beisswenger Gruppe, Klöck ner + Co SE, Swiss Steel Group, SMS Group GmbH, Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahlrohre e.V., Voß Edelstahlhandel GmbH + Co. KG and Stahlmarkt Consult shared their roadmaps for Green Transformation, including anecdotes of the trans formation processes their companies were undergoing.

24

Steel industry produces 6% of Europe’s greenhouse gas emissions The steel industry is working on what is described as a “historic technological transformation”. Direct reduction of carbon using hydrogen will replace the conventional production method as a clean production process, so say experts, so that steel produc tion using carbon will no longer dominate. The steel industry has the target to reduce emissions by around 30% by 2030. Using more sustainable steel as a basis for products is an important aspect when it comes to being environmentally friendly and competitive. The green transfor mation covers all industrial sectors – from suppliers to users. The European steel industry is responsible for 5.7% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union – which means that reducing emissions is a mammoth task. By 2050, it must be producing in a climateneutral manner, a stipulation of the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015. But the steel industry has already got off to a strong start, it argues. Green hydrogen certainly seems to be a preferred method for the industry to combat emissions. Salzgitter has already agreed with Volkswagen AG to supply lowcarbon steel from the end of 2025. Volkswagen plans to use this steel in projects such as the Trinity 1 emodel. Furthermore, the vehicle manu facturer is setting up a closed recycling cycle for steel between VW’s parent plant in Wolfsburg and the integrated smelter plant in Salzgitter. Volkswagen will make the steel remnants

from production available to Salzgitter AG, which melts them down, processes them into new steel products and delivers them to Wolfsburg for car production. Neat. More fasteners Technical conferences, expert meetings and guided ecoMetals Tours of the exhibition halls took place over the two concur rently held shows (wire and Tube). A greater emphasis on finished products like fastener components and industrial springs was evident over the five days. The combined shows entertained 1,822 exhibitors from over 50 countries, presenting their technology highlights from over 93,000 metres² of exhibition space. Wire alone presented 1,057 exhibitors from 51 countries on some 53,000 metres² of net exhibition space showcasing wire making and wire processing machines, wire, cable, wire prod ucts and manufacturing technology, fasteners and spring making technology including finished products and gridweld ing machinery. In addition to this, innovations from the meas uring, control technology and test engineering were on display. “We were all looking forward to wire, we have missed the personal contact in recent years and have learned to appreciate the value of direct customer talks at trade fair events such as wire and Tube,” says Dr. UwePeter Weigmann, Spokesman of the Board at WAFIOS AG. “We have deliberately chosen our trade fair motto ‘Future Forming Technology’ and thematically found the sweet spot for productivity leaps, groundbreaking new tech

nologies and automation solutions that will enable even more sustainable business in the future. For WAFIOS, innovations have always been in the forefront and we have once again clearly underlined this with our trade fair programme. Customer response was excellent and our stands, both at wire and Tube, were very well attended on all days of the trade fair.” With strong contingents at wire and Tube were exhibitors from Italy, Turkey, Spain, Belgium, France, Austria, the Nether lands, Switzerland, Great Britain, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany. wire visitors were primarily wire and cable manufacturers and came from the iron, steel and nonferrous metal industry or from the vehicle and upstream supplier industry. They were interested in wire and wire products, machinery and equip ment for the production and processing of rods, wire and strip as well as test engineering, sensor technology and quality assurance for the wire and cable industry. Visitors from more than 140 countries visited the Düssel dorf show, with international trade visitors making up a big proportion (70%) of overall visitor numbers. According to the organiser, around 75% of trade fair visitors were executives with decisionmaking powers. Firsttime show visitor numbers increased too, and a whopping 70% said they would come to Düsseldorf’s Exhibition Centre again for the 2024 show, which will run 1519 April in that year. www.wire.de

“Even if the number of exhibitors and visitors was lower than in previous years, we had many good and promising discussions. In addition to many known contacts, we also recorded a large number of new first contacts. “Our conclusion was that it was an all-round successful and worthwhile trade fair for us, where we will benefit from short, medium and long-term projects. We are already looking forward to 2024.” A spokesperson from Aachener Maschinenbau GmbH (AMBA), speaking to Torque Magazine.

BUSINESS BAROMETER

UNSTABLE, VOLATILE…

YET FASTENER MARKET SAILS STEADY

Buffeted by a multitude of economic headwinds and struggling to define what the ‘new normal’ actually is, it is not quite as straightforward as it once was to judge how the fastener industry is faring. So, join us as we tap the business barometer dial and check the readings from some of the biggest names in the business...

BULTEN > SALES AND ORDERS RISE AMID VOLATILITY Bulten’s Q2 report revealed an increase in sales and order bookings for the period, as well as the divestment of Bulten’s Russian operation finalised. Overall Q2 net sales amounted to SEK 1,006 (910) million, an increase of 10.5% on the same period last year, while order bookings amounted to SEK 1,289 (947) million, an increase of 36.2%. Operating earnings (EBIT) totalled SEK 41 (55) million, equating to an operating margin of 4.1% (6.0). Adjusted operating earnings totalled SEK 51 (55) million, equating to an adjusted operating margin of 5.0% (6.0). “The second quarter was characterised by a volatile business climate, where costs increased in tandem with fluctuations in our production,” said Anders Nyström, President and CEO. “Underlying demand in the automo tive industry remained strong, but unfortunately our customers’ production volumes were negatively impacted early in the quarter by widespread compo nent shortages. On a positive note, however, at the end of the quarter the production disruptions decreased significantly, and we also finalised the closure of our operation in Russia.”

WÜRTH GROUP > POSITIVE DESPITE DIFFICULT CONDITIONS In H1 2022 Würth Group continued its growth from 2021 despite the unstable economic situation. The globally operating Group recorded sales of €9.9 billion in the first six months, corresponding to an increase of 18.4% compared to the same period last year and of 17.0% adjusted for currency effects. As of June 2022, the operating result of the Würth Group is at €720 million, up on the previous year (EUR 520 million). This positive development is the result of productivity increases at the large, established companies in Germany, Southern Europe and the USA, said the group. “Supply and material bottlenecks, price increases, the COVID19 pandemic and, since February, the conflict in Ukraine: Coping with these crises which are currently hitting the economy is very challenging for all of us,” said Robert Friedmann, Chairman of the Central Manag ing Board of the Würth Group. “Currently, the energy crisis is coming to a head and we are all looking for alternatives, which, in turn, may be an opportunity for the transition to more sustainability. In this context, achieving such positive results is more than satisfactory. However, we are aware that we will probably not be able to maintain these high growth rates given the fact that the economy is cooling down.” “The outlook for the second half of 2022 is certainly anything but optimal due to difficult general conditions. Nevertheless, we currently expect the company to continue its positive development with doubledigit sales growth in 2022provided the global economic and polit ical situation does not deteriorate more dramatically.”

GRAFTON GROUP > GOOD TRADING FOR SELCO OWNER International building materials distributor and DIY retailer, Grafton Group plc, issued a trading update for H1 2022 ahead of its official half year results. Overall Group trading was good in the half year with total revenue up by 13.9%. Average daily likeforlike revenue growth of 3.4% was complemented by a significant contribution from acquisitions in Finland, the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands. Group revenue increased by 12.1% to £1.15 billion in the half year from £1.03 billion in first half of 2021, excluding the traditional merchanting business in Great Britain that was divested on 31 December 2021. Despite increased economic uncertainty, the company doesn’t see any need to adjust full year expectations at this stage. www.graftonplc.com

28-29 Barometer - Q2 Financial Roundup TOR066 2022_LAW.qxp

BUFAB HAILS ‘ROBUST’ RESULTS, WITH ACQUISITIONS PLAYING A ROLE Sales grew 57% for Bufab in Q2, reaching SEK 2,241 million (2021: 1,431) with organic growth a very healthy 16%. Q2 operating profit (EBITA) was up 26% to SEK 233 million (2021: 185) with operating margin at 10.4% (2021: 12.9). Adjusted for remeasured purchase considerations of SEK 80 million, operating profit increased 64% to SEK 313 million (2021: 192), with operating margin at 14% (2021: 13.4%). Q2 highlights included the purchase of CDA Polska Sp.z.o.o. which sees annual sales of SEK 90 million. The TIMCO and PajoBolte purchases fell in an earlier accounting period. Looking at the bigger picture (JanJun 2022), net sales were up 49% to SEK 4,235 million (2021: 2,854). Organic growth was 26% and order intake was slightly higher than net sales. Johan Lindqvist said: “We noted strong growth of 57% in the quarter, of which 16% was organic growth. This organic growth was a result of price increases and healthy under lying demand in all segments. It is also grati fying that we continue to capture market shares and that our order intake is stable. “Although the quarter continued to be affected by supply chain disruptions, long delivery lead times and some component shortages, the situation has stabilised. We are seeing indications among our companies of improved availability and shorter lead times, which together creates fewer disruptions and thus a better flow. “The geopolitical situation and rising infla tion are causing an uncertainty concerning the future development. On the other hand, we have noted a certain improvement in the supply chain with shorter lead times and fewer disruptions.” www.bufab.com

30-31 ANALYSIS - Bosch Battery Group TOR066 2022_LAW.qxp

TORQUE ANALYSIS

THE VHS MOMENT FOR

CORDLESS TOOLS? Having a universal battery system that works for multiple power tool brands makes sense for end users and the environment. But which system will triumph? Peter Brett analyses the recent expansion of Bosch Power Tools’ Power For All Alliance…

T

here have been a few tentative moves into the area of building some common factors into cordless tools in vari ous ways. An easy one perhaps was the adoption of two different guide rail formats for plunge saws: i.e. the Boschstyle rail or the Makitastyle rail. As far as I know this didn’t cause an outbreak of fisticuffs amongst power tool companies, but then we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. When Cologne was still a thing a few years ago, I had a conversation with a Chinese manufacturer that was going to break our dependence on different battery platforms by selling adaptors for any battery to any make of tool. Much as you can buy adaptors for fitting nonname branded lenses to branded cameras. But as batteries and chargers have got smarter I think the idea was ahead of its time. But cast around a bit and you can find that, more recently, Mafell and Metabo have cooperated with the battery part of their cordless tools so that a Mafell battery pack will fit a Metabo, and vice versa (see inset). And there are a few other co operations of a similar kind going on with other manufacturers. I guess it won’t be too long before we have a universal base for plunge saws and a multiformat guide rail to suit any saw. The Power For All Alliance from Bosch has already officially started the move towards a common battery platform and who knows where that might end?

One battery to power them all: Bosch is making a strong bid to become a dominant power tool battery standard.

30

torque-expo.com

The Power For All Alliance – Background The alliance was started in 2020 and was seen by founder members to offer a wide range of benefits apart from simpli fying the number of battery platforms on the market. Shared development costs for manufacturers are an obvious plus, because battery packs are by no means simple electronic devices. They generally include circuitry to prevent overheat ing, overloading and emergency cut outs to name but three. And smart chargers are not called smart for nothing – they can diagnose battery faults and ensure optimum and safe charging. The common use of brushless motors allows battery packs to last longer, but their performance needs to be optimised by smart electronics in the battery packs and tools. Having a big R&D budget that can iron out all the complexities to suit a range of different tools is, I imagine, quite a big plus. Other big plusses will be saving space and money because consumers need only to buy a battery or two to power an increasingly wide range of tools. The environment is also well served by having a wider range of machines where batteries are used more economically and more intensely. Who Has signed Up? Bosch is a large enough company for others to look up to, so it is not a surprise that there are currently about ten well known

Battery tech doesn’t come cheap, so pooling resources makes financial sense for power tool brands. Dieter Gorff at Kubler Workwear says this: “The ‘Power for All Alliance’ allows us to create brand new sales impulses and completely new application options for our users. The first product planned is a ‘Smart Textiles’ jacket featuring a heating function and inductive charging of smartphones ‒ the first batterypowered product in the portfolio. The aim is to contin uously expand the range for DIYers to offer this target group an increasingly wider range.” Robin Vrijland, Managing Director of PerfectPro is also enthusiastic about the idea of protecting the environment by using a rechargeable battery in various tools. Vrijland is also interested in the opportunities this opens up for developing new customer segments. “Up to now, we focused on offering durable audio devices on construction sites. Thanks to the ‘Power for All Alliance’ and our outdoor radio, we will be addressing users with an active lifestyle in future, and there fore make our durable products available to a wider public.”

and popular brands that have joined the Alliance. For example, Husqvarna is wellknown in the areas of gardening and forestry. Kubler Workwear and PerfectPro will introduce heated workwear and consumer entertainment electronics respectively. Other household names like Gardena, Gloria, Wagner, Rapid, Flymo and Steinel are also signed up, with development on new products already going ahead. To get a flavour of where this is all going on we should perhaps listen to the companies themselves. Sofia Axelsson from Husqvarna Forest and Garden says: “We are very happy to join the ‘Power for All Alliance’, as we know many consumers want one strong and reliable battery that they can use flexibly in their home and garden tools. One battery solution, as opposed to multiple ones, is better for the environment, and also saves money for the consumer.”

Scaling It Up The figures are impressive – Bosch estimates that over 30 million BoschBranded ‘Power For All Alliance’ batteries will be on the market by 2023. With a compatibility factor that stretches back to 2007, the new range of over 100 tools from all manufacturers seems like a big draw. Bosch alone is planning a range of over 60 new Home and Garden tools by the end of 2022. Henk Becker from Bosch shares his vision of “improving people's quality of life drives them us and holds the alliance together.” Further cooperation partners are already being discussed ‒ with the aim of covering more and more areas of application and life with technology. The Future The tool business being what it is I can’t imagine that the ‘Power For All Alliance’ is the end of the matter. There are bound to be responses – some good, some not so good. But hopefully, consumers and retailers, will benefit and probably, more importantly in the long run, the environment will too. www.powerforall-alliance.com

WHICH SYSTEM WILL DOMINATE? Bosch’s stab at a universal battery system faces stiff competition from the Cordless Alliance System, which uses Metabo battery technology and has an impressive roll call of brands already using it. The Cordless Alliance System (CAS) appears to be the fastener industry choice, with the likes of Prebena, Gesipa, fischer, TRUMPF, ITH and others using the system.

SHOW PREVIEW INTERNATIONAL HARDWARE FAIR

WHEN IN COLOGNE

It’s been four years since the mighty International Hardware Fair last graced the exhibition halls of Cologne. We take a look at a selected bunch of product highlights you’ll be able to find at the show this 25-28 September… Thanks to the special geometry and material properties, the allpurpose sealing plug can be used three times: in solid build ing materials, hollow building materials and panel building materials. The Aqua Stop Pro is made of special HD polypropy lene, which offers unchanged material properties and safety even in contact with water. The Aqua Stop Pro works like an expansion dowel in solid stone and concrete. The optimised geometry spreads several times in the borehole. In hollow building materials and the panel building materials frequently used in wet areas, the dowel reli ably knots in the cavity or behind the panel building materials. The dowel is set in the preinsertion assembly. The collar protects the tile during installation and guarantees the optimum fit of the dowel. The double sealing lip seals between the dowel and the building material – without any sealant such as silicone. The eightfold wedge rotation locks on the dowel body prevent it from turning in the drill hole and make it easier to screw in the screw. The head geometry with the PZdrive mount enables optimum power transmission when screwing in. The pan head screw is made of stainless steel. This guaran tees lasting safety and avoids unwanted rust noses. The partial thread also seals against moisture in the shaft area.

.

TOX > SEALING PLUG FOR WET AREAS WITH THE AQUA STOP PRO Fixings in wet areas are a challenge, but luckily the dowel specialist TOX now offers the allpurpose sealing dowel Aqua Stop Pro. The dowel enables secure, sealing and timesaving fastening in wet areas. An independent institute has tested the sealing function of the waterblue allpurpose dowel with stainless steel screw following ETAG 022 and DIN 18534. This makes Aqua Stop Pro suitable for wet areas in water impact classes W0I to W3I in private, commercial and public rooms alike. The sealing function prevents moisture from penetrating the building material – without any additional sealant. Shelves, shower partitions, towel rails in the bathroom, wall cupboards and shelves in the kitchen are exposed to splashing water. To protect the building material, especially gypsum plasterboard and gypsum fibreboard, against moisture, mould growth and thus against structural damage and to protect the occupants against damage to their health, it is necessary to seal the fastening following ETAG 022 and DIN 18534 properly. This was only possible with sealants such as silicone – but was often timeconsuming and not permanently effective. With the new allpurpose sealing dowel from TOX, fastening and sealing is done in one operation. This saves time and costs and creates security for the craftsman against warranty claims.

PREBENA. “Nevertheless, we see battery technology as the future of mobile working. We want to offer our customers both technologies – and that's why we decided on the new PKT HYBRID line. And with a crossmanufacturer battery system such as CAS (Cordless Alliance System), our customers can now use even more machines and equipment that they need in their everyday work beyond fasteners.” The PKTHYBRID range initially consists of two models, one roundhead and one halfhead strip nailer, equipped with a short or long magazine for nails up to 100 mm in length. All this in a very compact design. The PKT8RKP100 is suitable for paperbound round head strip nails Type RKP (with) up to 100 mm nail length. The PKT 8PR100 processes paperbound halfhead nails (Dhead) Type PR also up to 100 mm nail length. A new type of magazine for roundheaded nails – until now, these were only produced in plastic magazines – the nails are paperbound and can be processed without leaving any residue. Both devices have enormous shooting power, speed and the necessary battery power to drive nails with a length between 65 and 100 millimetres and a shaft diameter of 2.8 to 3.1 millimetres at 1.5 shots per second. PREBENA's pneumatic cordless nailers equipped with “Opti wear Technology” are wearoptimised and easy to maintain. In addition, they are weatherindependent and can be used indoors (and outdoors). The devices are Made in Germany and easy to operate via the touch display. Adjustable single or contact triggering and the quick charging system enable fast work. Emptyshot safety, depth adjustment, belt hook and remov able magazine, are part of standard issue. PREBENA‘s new 18 volt battery compressor VITAS 100AKKU from PREBENA is also operated with batteries from CAS. The compact piston compressor with brushless motor is ideal for mobile use on the construction site. With a weight of 10 kg and a size of 330 x 310 x 390 mm, it is easy to transport and rubberised feet guarantee safe use. The PREBENA VITAS 100 AKKU is oilfree and thus ensures minimal maintenance and service requirements. It offers a maximum pressure of 8 bar, which can be adjusted via a pressure reducer with manometer, suitable for each tool. A control panel with pressure gauges for boiler and outlet pressure, as well as a universal coupling for all common connection systems, guarantee easy operation. The battery compressor promises low energy consumption and a correspondingly long runtime, so that the performance is comparable to a cable device.

MULTIPLICATION OF BIT LIFETIME

N O I T U REVOL FISCHER > EXPANDS NO TOOLS JUST HANDS RANGE When it comes to hanging, gluing, or repairing various items, the fischer assortment No Tools Just Hands is a top choice for doityourselfers. Now the fixing specialist from the northern Black Forest has added five innovative prod ucts to its range. Two adhesive tapes, a woodchip repair filler, a screw protection glue and a super glue offer DIYers and craftsmen uncomplicated and reliable support. Five new products have been added to the range, which now spans more than 20 items. Among the innovations is the extrastrong fabric tape named Universal Tape Strong. The tape is characterised by its high adhesive strength and high resistance to weather conditions. It has a high tear strength under load, on the other hand the base material can be torn lengthwise and crosswise by hand. The all purpose synthetic rubber adhesivebased fabric tape offers reliable adhesion to a wide range of surfaces. It is suitable for numerous applications: from bundling and sealing hoses to various indoor and outdoor repairs. The small roll core of the tape is also extremely practical, allowing it to be stowed in a backpack or glove compartment. The wide mounting tape for doublesided gluing and mounting also proves very useful in many cases. The mounting tape is kept transparent for discreet applica tion. It is therefore particularly suitable for objects such as glass, crystal, or transparent plastics. Thanks to its UV and water resistance, the tape ensures stable adhesion both indoors and outdoors. It also ensures very good load distribution and compensates for tensions and unevenness. To ensure fast work progress, the tape is easy to peel off and can be torn off quickly. It develops its full adhesive strength after 24 hours. Ideal for cosmetic repairs, fischer’s woodchip repair filler adapts seamlessly to existing woodchip structure. The new fischer screw protection glue is a medium thick, special adhesive contained in a pump dispenser – users apply the adhesive to the thread or screw, turn in the screw and allow the adhesive to cure. The screw protection glue is waterproof and resistant to vibration, oil, and solvents. The liquid fischer superglue rounds out the new range from the Black Forest manufacturer. www.eisenwarenmesse.com

REPORT THE GLOBAL DIY-SUMMIT

WORLD OF HOME IMPROVEMENT MEETS AGAIN IN COPENHAGEN Returning trade shows and conferences have all played on that theme of renewing face-to-face relationships ‘post-Covid’. The Global DIY-Summit was no different, pulling together some big names and execs from the home improvement sector. Peter Brett takes a closer look…

T

to learn how chains such as Stark, Silvan, and BAUHAUS, as well as established franchises such as XLBYG, and discounters such as jem & fix, continue to adapt and innovate to satisfy their customers’ evolving needs and engage them in a compet itive urban environment.

he delegates, using the inapp voting tool, rated this event an overwhelming 81% as 'very good' to 'excellent' with a further 18% rating the event as 'good'. About 900 delegates from 55 countries attended the congress, which included over 280 of the top retailers in the DIY sector from around the world. The highly multicultural audience attending the Summit this year (maybe something to do with reopening of international travel?) the Voting Tool produced some interesting results. Perhaps to be expected, the audience was predominantly male at 72% of delegates, 31% were retailers and suppliers – a comfortable majority. Suppliers were still the largest share, and approximately 55% of the delegates were manufacturers. Also, some companies not always associated with the indus try, like consultancy firms, trade fair organisers and universi ties, accounted for 15% of delegates. Organisers were gratified that the delegates using the voting tool labelled the congress to be a worldclass event. Over 65% of delegates have already confirmed their participation to next year’s Summit in Berlin.

ALSO IN THE DIARY The agenda included three interactive workshops, focused on driving high productivity in business and remaining relevant in times of disruption, and driving incremental sales on Amazon. These workshops, including one run by industry icon Jim Inglis, were a resounding success, with all attendees coming away with new insights into how to manage their busi nesses most successfully. The 8th Global DIYSummit bought the industry back together again after three long years with the Get Together on Wednesday night in the exhibition area. The jubilant mood, born from reuniting the industry, was palpable; as retailers, suppliers, consultants, and industry stakeholders networked and reconnected.

SUMMIT ITINERARY On Wednesday 8 June, 330 delegates took part in the store tour, consisting of six buses visiting six topquality DIY stores. They visited a range of traditional to new and exciting home improvement retailers, including one store pioneering sustain ability through refurbished building materials. REPORT THE GLOBAL DIY-SUMMIT business, the age of responsibility going beyond CSR, home improvement retail trends, and the future of the home improve ment industry worldwide. We have all experienced the turbulent period of Covid19, which has dominated recent years, as well as its knockon effects on supply chains. However, it is vital that these hurdles are not isolated. Considering the myriad of external and internal pressures, the DIY, home improvement and garden industry has to act now to ensure its relevance and success moving forwards.

// Considering the myriad of external and internal pressures, the DIY, home improvement and garden industry has to act now to ensure its relevance and success moving forwards. //

On the opening day, Mark Herbek (Cleveland Research Company) presented the Future of U.S. Home Improvement in a Post Covid19 / Normal Supply Chain World, echoing that “when the US sneezes, the world catches a cold”. The high expectations for the presentation from the Managing Director of Bunnings Group, Michael Schneider, were fulfilled with his impressive opening keynote; “Always Evolving... Markets, Offers and People.” Delegates were also interested in the interactive sessions from worldrenowned speakers Ken Hughes and Rik Vera, these being highlights of the first day, alongside the session focused on the Future of Marketplaces, including AI and social commerce in an ever more digital and connected world, with Nils Zündorf (factora), Tobias Pohl (Google), Veronica Civiero (Meta) and Victoria Neuhofer (Neuhofer Holz).

Ken Hughes retook to the stage to open the session on Open Innovation, with innovation Director at AkzoNobel, Menno van der Zalm, his interlocutor in “Giving New Ideas the best Chance of Success.” Three startups, who were each part of the “Paint the Future” global startup challenge, presented their future orientated developments and how collaborative innovation is transforming the paints and coatings industry. The first day of the Global DIYSummit was bought to a close by Jamie Anderson, Professor of Strategic Management at the Antwerp Business School, who highlighted the importance of Creative Leadership in a Complex World. GALA EVENING: THE GLOBAL DIY LIFETIME AWARD – PRESENTED TO JOHN W. HERBERT The highlight of the 8th Global DIYSummit was the Gala Evening that took place in one of the most unique buildings in Copenhagen: the Lokomotivværkstedet. This historical loca tion is a refurbished and repurposed locomotive workshop, with floor to ceiling windows and candescent skylights, and it provided the perfect backdrop to present EDRA/GHIN General Secretary, John W Herbert, an undeniable icon in retail, DIY and home improvement, with the Global DIY Lifetime Award. Sergio Giroldi, CEO of OBI and EDRA/GHIN President, provided the laudation, highlighting “John W. Herbert [as] a true veteran of the Home Improvement and a friend to all.” Reinhard Wolff, President of HIMA, praised John and thanked him for “[making] the global DIY community look and feel like a village.” With his 66 years in retail, as well as his passion for networking, John W. Herbert has bought the world of Home Improvement together since the foundation of EDRA, GHIN, and the Global DIYSummit. The extensive and prolonged standing ovation and applause expressed this one man's worth to the industry. SECOND DAY: THE NEW NORMAL The second day of the 8th Global DIYSummit saw a focus on sustainability and going beyond CSR, including a keynote

speech from founder of Shift17, Mark Haviland, on “the Age of Responsibility.” Dilys Maltby, Senior Partner and Circus, deliv ered a presentation on “Putting Purpose at the Heart of your Business” and Wayne Visser, Professor of Integrated Value at the Antwerp Management School, ended the session with a talk on exploring how we can transition from a breakdown to a breakthrough world. Home improvement retail trends were presented by inter national companies such as KPMG and USP, with Llewellyn Walters, CEO of Wholesale at Massmart South Africa, and Benjamin Brechter, Head of Business Unit Home and Garden at Bosch Power tools, demonstrating how both retailers and suppliers are developing their offer to continue to engage customers and meet their growing demands. This session also included the exciting announcement that the newest members in the ‘Power for All Alliance’ are the worldfamous Husqvarna brand, Kübler Workwear and PerfectPro (see page 30). The Alliance is now made up of ten wellknown and popular brands with a common goal: to offer users the best and widest cross

brand 18volt battery system and thus maximise added value. The farewell speech was given by Joshua Coombes, Founder of #DoSomethingForNothing, who shared his work in the new generation of altruism and looking deeper than the surface when engaging and connecting with individuals. In the final plenary, both Chairmen of the Global DIY Summit, John W. Herbert (EDRA/GHIN) and Piet de Coninck (HIMA), reiterated how inspiring and energising it had been to gather the industry and its stakeholders together again. The 8th Global DIYSummit seems to have cemented the essential role the Global DIYSummit plays in bringing the industry together. The necessity of these summits was discussed by all delegates in the networking breaks, and they echoed how encouraging it was to see the industry gathered again. They are already looking forward to the next Global DIY Summit in Berlin from the 14 to the 16 June 2023.

THE COST OF TOOL THEFT Tool crime is in the news again… if it ever went away. With thousands of tool thefts thought to be unreported, Peter Brett takes a look at an expensive problem for the industry…

M

ention tool theft in a group of tradespeople and be prepared to hear a litany of complaints – from oppor tunistic tool grabs on the jobsite to full scale opening of vans akin to peeling back a tin of sardines. Things are so bad for a builder friend of mine in Brighton that he has 24hour, multicamera CCTV in his back garden where he parks his van. The van is parked with the back doors and one side door close to solid brick walls – so close that a person couldn’t get between door and wall. The area is lit by movement sensitive floodlights as well. The van has an alarm fitted and there is a high steel gate (locked at night) at the top of the drive, so that it is even diffi cult to get close enough to the van to wield an angle grinder or other weapon of choice. And yet still, he has had thieves make (unsuccessful so far) attempts to rob his van. Theft of tools is obviously at the forefront of tradespeople’s minds, probably helped by a lively black market in stolen tools both in the UK and overseas. £137K TOOLS PINCHED DAILY Some recent research by property maintenance company Help me Fix has revealed that £137,438 worth of tools is stolen every day across the UK. A staggering amount, I am sure you will agree, even allowing for the high cost of some of the pieces of kit we are tempted by these days. Other statistics show that that in the last two years alone, 59,000 tools thefts were reported, and the value of the stolen goods came to over £100.3 million. Clearly this statistic is an underestimate, because it does not take into account the offences where the victim, for a variety of reasons, just sighs and shells out for a replacement. If you break these figures down a bit further, it shows that on average about 81 cases of theft are reported each day with the average replacement cost of the stolen tools being £1,075 to each tradesperson. What I hear from many trades that I speak to is resignation. They know that in policing terms, robbery is a lower priority than murder or terrorism, so the likelihood of getting your tools returned after a canny police operation is pretty small.

// The good old ‘No tools stored in this vehicle overnight’ stickers are worth the small cost because, even if it not true, a potential thief might decide not to take a chance and move on to more likely targets. // But we should all be doing something to help ourselves and Help me Fix has put together a list of some of the most obvious things trades can do to help themselves, so to speak. Most trades would do the first suggestion automatically i.e. to take your tools home and then store them in a secure work shop or building overnight – not in the van. A great suggestion, but not everyone has a handy storage building, and after a long day, your aching back might just rebel at carrying that mitre saw and stand into the workshop. It makes sense to store high value tools more securely, and I am sure that most trades do what they can. The good old ‘No tools stored in this vehicle overnight’ stick ers are worth the small cost because, even if it not true, a potential thief might decide not to take a chance and move on to more likely targets. Also less costly than many other options is to ensure that the van doors are fitted with extra locks, as many of the ‘white vans’ that trades use have fairly unsophisticated locking systems. This is slowly changing as van manufacturers cotton on to what could be a major selling point – but that may be a poor consolation to a newlyrobbed tradesperson. An alarm is another more costly measure and could be espe cially useful in an urban environment where thieves would be deterred by the prospect of waking a row of inhabitants. I have already mentioned CCTV and floodlighting – parking on a welllit suburban road is better protection against theft than parking down a dark side road. REGISTER YOUR TOOLS Most good power tool companies use registration systems to keep track of extended warranties and repairs and these systems are great if you make the small effort to register the tool when you buy it. You will then have a record of serial number, make and type of tool that will make it easy for police to track owners of stolen tools should they uncover a stolen batch. It also makes it easy for the owner to submit an accurate insurance claim with all the necessary details – just pull the details off your registration form. Along with registration, marking tools with permanent pen, ultraviolet pens or even engraving initials or other identifying unique marks on a tool will make them easier to identify and more difficult to sell on in the stolen goods market. Some tools have microchipping systems that are largely used for locating tools on a jobsite or van, but the technology already exists to microchip your own tools and be able to track them on a smartphone.

42

torque-expo.com

This is already the case for larger items of plant like diggers and tippers – where a war of sophisticated technology is fought every day between the owners and thieves, as each temporarily gains the upper hand. BIG BOXES AND INSURANCE After all the sophistication of the previous paragraph we shouldn’t omit the basic options of insuring tools to their correct value. Insurance might not stop the thefts, but at least one company I know of will replace stolen tools very quickly with a minimum excess fee, if you sign up to its insurance plan. And most insurance companies will look more kindly on a tradey who stores his tools in a secure tool storage box like those made by Armorgard. The ones I have seen are no pushover, to break open and would be a big theft deterrent even if it was mounted in a white van. TIME FOR THE TOOL ANGEL The shock of finding your van with a door wrenched off and all your tools gone could be considerable. Replacing the tools could be difficult if you don’t have the ready cash, and it could prevent you from working for some time, thus hitting your income quite hard. Williams’s and Co’s ‘Tool Angel’ loan service is a free, no obligation service that will lend any UKbased plumbers and heating engineers a range of six Makita LXT 18 power tools (with chargers and batteries) a 240v core drill, and a Kane Flue Gas Analyser, all packed into an Armorgard box. Try www.williams.uk.com/toolangel for more details.

Some tools have a microchipping system used for locating tools on a site, but the tech can also be used to track your tools in the event of theft

SPOTLIGHT GROWERMETAL Growermetal’s internal R&D lab is equipped with the latest testing instruments

QUALITY-CENTRED EXPERTS, LOOKING FOR INNOVATION From quality control to the investments in R&D, Growermetal’s approach to fastener manufacturing showcases its commitment to the supplying of premium services and products. That’s a vision shared by an alliance of technical and scientific partners, through its participation in the Joint Research Centre for Metal and Trasformation Technologies.

I

n the fastener manufacturing sector supplying reliable, certified and efficient products or services is not only recommended, but necessary. Just think of some of the main application fields where safety washers are used, like automo tive, railway or aerospace: the consequences of a loosening fastening system would be serious. Flawless and safe fastening systems are essential to fulfil their locking function with the maximum reliability. Therefore, the creation of a productive system able to respond to local and international quality standards, providing safe designs and constant supervision of the different stages of the manufacturing process, must be considered a priority. But how does a business pursue and maintain premium quality and high safety levels? From its headquarters in northern Italy, Growermetal has been developing its personal vision of quality for more than 70 years.

AN IN-HOUSE PRODUCTION FOR RELIABLE PRODUCTS The fastener manufacturing process is composed of many different stages, with a great level of management complexity. As an experienced producer of safety washers, railway wash ers and special blanked parts, Growermetal has developed an inhouse process that allows its team to control every stage of the production. So, if a machine shows problems or malfunc tions, the synergy between the monitoring software and the company’s technicians ensures a rapid response and a quick management of problems. For Growermetal, the attention given to the production cycle reflects on the final quality of its washers. Well aware of the importance of ensuring the greatest dependability to customers, the Italian company meets relevant standards, with an ISO 9001, ISO 14001, IATF 16949 and EN 9100 certified manufacturing process. Together with blanking, coining, wire rolling, treatments and coating, a crucial stage to consider for a consistent product is quality control. Especially for applications exposed to extreme vibrations, high temperature variations or in the pres ence of dynamic loads, ensuring the integrity of the parts is extremely important. Through cuttingedge machinery and optical sorting technologies, every piece is inspected to check its structure, integrity and characteristics, reducing the risk of material problems.

44

torque-expo.com

R&D: THE KEYS TO GROWTH The commitment to quality and innovation spreads also beyond the manufacturing process, including programmes of acknowledgement and research inside and outside the company. From this point of view, Growermetal considers its internal R&D laboratory a key investment, equipping it with the latest testing instruments, including a sophisticated Junker test machine, which can simulate the efficiency of fasteners under particular conditions or vibrations. Research and testing are essential not only in improving the performance of fastening systems developed by Growermetal, but also in the creation of innovative designs suitable to the needs of current markets. Among the latest products, introduced in the washers family during 2022, there are high thickness and preci sion flat washers, special blanked and bended parts, EPDM moulded part project and parts with glued EPDM inserts. Following this tendency towards innovation, in April 2020 Growermetal joined the Joint Research Center MATT – Metal and Trasformation Technologies. A centre aimed at developing and promoting activities and initiatives to support competi tive, innovative growth and knowledge among its members. SHOW PREVIEW INTERNATIONAL FASTENER EXPO

EXCITING TIMES Everything is bigger in Vegas and the International Fastener Expo certainly doesn’t disappoint. Covering every aspect of the supply chain and with more than 450 exhibitors set to attend, there is plenty to get excited about this 17-19 October.

T

.

he International Fastener Expo is the largest fastener exhi bition in North America, bringing together manufacturers and distributors of industrial fasteners, machinery and tooling and other related services in the sector. Held from 1719 October, 2022, at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, the event is set to inspire, educate and excite with the conference programme, exhibitors, training and several networking opportunities. While the world still isn’t free from travel restrictions and general fallout from the pandemic, the IFE is expecting good crowds and a show reminiscent of precovid times as well as some new international exhibitors. “We have been inundated with requests and registrations in recent weeks on the exhibitor and attendee sides and are expecting a strong turnout. The international contingent will look different from the prepandemic expos because some countries are still facing travel restrictions (primarily China, normally one of the largest international segments) but we also have big support this year from other countries, including Taiwan, India, and a firsttime pavilion for Turkey! That said, I think we will be very close to prepandemic levels on our domestic side,” says Morgan Wilson, Group Show Director.

46

So, what can visitors expect from the show in 2022? Sarah Varner, Vice President Marketing, explains: “We have another robust conference schedule and are thrilled to announce the first ever IFE Keynote from Dirk Beveridge, founder of UnleashWD. We will be hosting more than 450 exhibitors in the expo hall and

The FTI Class at the International Fastener Expo runs on 17 October and looks at ‘How Fasteners Are Made and What Drives the Cost of a Fastener.’ Discussing the educational aspect of the event, FTI Marketing Director Jo Morris says, “The Fastener Training Institute is pleased to again offer educational content at the wellrespected International Fastener Expo. The IFE offers a great opportunity for individuals in the industry to network, take classes and learn about new products.” With the calendar filling up with fastener events globally as business returns to its usual operating practices, what sets the International Fastener Expo apart from other major events? “When I first started with IFE in 2016, someone called our

event the Fastener Superbowl and for some reason it stuck with me. It just seems like everyone is always excited for IFE (espe cially this year). Our event brings such a diverse group of people within the industry, we cover every aspect of the supply chain, in addition to wide variety of options from each category. With all the supply chain disruption recently, I think it’s going to make this year extremely successful,” adds Sarah Varner. TAIWAN

TAIWAN HEADLINES Recovering exports and innovation – we round up some of the news from one of the world’s key fastener producers…

A

ccording to Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), Taiwan is the world's third largest exporter of fasteners. 2021 saw significant recovery following the trials of previous months. Between January and October 2021, fastener export value increased by 33.2%. Overall figures from the Taiwan International Ports Corpo ration bore that out, with exports at 750,590,698 (revenue tons) in 2021, 2020 saw them at 702,991,667, a significant dip from 2019’s 730,557,680. Most of the fasteners heading out of Taiwan’s ports are bound for the United States and the European Union, account ing for almost 70% of Taiwan’s total fastener exports. With restrictions gradually removed in the US and EU over 2021, demand was driven by infrastructure, automobiles, construc tion and DIY repair industries.

50

torque-expo.com

The MOEA said: “The technology of Taiwan's fastener production is advanced and durable in quality, while enjoying the advantage of industrial clusters. Taiwan's factories utilise smart and automated production, as well as develop fasteners of high value for the automotive, aerospace, rail and dental care sectors. Hence, the exportation of our fastener products to Europe and the US is expected to continue growing.”

THE LONG RETURN: TAIWAN FASTENER SCHEDULED FOR MAY 2023

Maximum protection against self-loosening of bolted joints

“Border control measures” were blamed for postponing the Taiwan International Fastener Show once again, this time to 35 May 2023. The Kaohsiung Exhibition Centreset trade fair last took place in 2018 and had been due to be followed in 2020. Covid and resulting restrictions on gathering and then travelling have pushed the show back repeatedly, most recently from its April 2022 scheduled date. There were encouraging happier signs for internationally focused shows in Q2 2022, with the likes of Dusseldorf’s wire show going ahead (see page 24).

MIRDC TEAMS WITH TAIWAN SHAN YIN ON CONSTRUCTION SCREWS

The Metal Industries Research & Development Centre (MIRDC) promotes the development of metal and related industries in Taiwan, carrying out R&D and a wide range of services for tech nology and the industrial community. That remit has seen the MIRDC assist fastener producers with the challenges of more effi ciently producing products that satisfy regulations. The requirements of the EU’s Construction Products Regula tions(CPR)require exposed fasteners to be corrosionresis tant, eg made of stainless steel rather than more rustsusceptible carbon steel. Many construction fasteners currently available in the market mostly use bimetal selfdrilling screws welded by carbon steel and stainless steel, which have the advantages of carbon steel hardness and stainlesssteel corrosion resistance. However, the manufacturing procedures of such fasteners is complicated and there may be welding risks such as breakage of welded junctions or corrosion of carbon steel parts. With high corrosion resistance, austenite stainless steel is a widely used metal material. However, to develop into a high value added product, it is necessary to solve the problems of insufficient hardness, deterioration of corrosion resistance and insufficient mass production of stainless steel. Under the support of the Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT), Economic Affairs (MOEA), MIRDC has developed “The Equipment of StainlessSteel Corrosion Resistance and Surface Hardening System”. The surface of stainless steel is modified by gas activation to increase the hardness, so that the surface hardness exceeds HV 1,200. This treatment makes the surface of stainless steel higher than ordinary carbon steel without damaging the original corro sion resistance characteristics. The equipment processes a large number of stainlesssteel objects at one time. Complex shapes can evenly form a hardened layer on the surface of the object.

54

torque-expo.com

Through AI integrated judgment, parameters such as tempera ture, time, atmosphere, and flow rate can be accurately controlled, so that the hardness and permeation layer can be accurate which are within the requirements; at the same time, an exclusive IoT solution for the production line is established to implement the goal of intelligent production. MIRDC is now cooperating with Taiwan Shan Yin International Co., Ltd, one of the major fastener manufacturers, which has more than 30 years of screw manufacturing experience. Bimetal selfdrilling screws are among the main products of Taiwan Shan Yin, widely used in building structures, however, the product has a complicated manufacturing process. Therefore, introducing the technology of StainlessSteel Corrosion Resis tance and Surface Hardening developed by MIRDC would assist the development of onepiece in manufacturing Bimetal self drilling screws. The stainlesssteel screws produced are of high strength and exceed HV 1,200, and it has also passed the 500 hour salt spray corrosion test and demonstrated performance beyond the norm, which not only improves the quality and performance advantages of new products, but also helps the company win international orders.

MIRDC has also partnered with micro part manufacturers serv ing the socalled 3C sector (computer, communication and consumer electronic products). As 3C products become lighter, thinner and smaller, greater demands are being placed on compo nents to be miniaturised while retaining high levels of precision, such as carbon steel screws in mobile phones. MIRDC won a Bronze in 2021 Edison Awards with its Continu ous Micro Parts Heat Treatment System Equipment, which features four major innovative designs. For micro parts with highly complex structures or smaller than 2 mm in diameter, it integrates automatic feeding, realtime monitoring and realtime control of the main furnace, innovative oil tank and collecting module, and smart service functions. It can reduce the depen dence on human experience and trial and error to upgrade the quality of components that a collecting rate as high as 100% and 99% yield rate, substantially reducing delivery time and costs. Now, the technology has been used in the international supply chains such as those of Tesla and Bosch. Also, MIRDC is currently collaborating with Sha Yang Ye and Xing Guang Industrial in hopes of building a complete microproduction chain in the future to promote the development of Taiwan's micro manufacturing industry will be applied in medical machinery, robots, electric vehicle/motorcycles, optoelectronic semiconductors, aerospace, etc. and enhance the industry's manufacturing competitiveness.

SPOTLIGHT MARTYN PRICE FASTENERS

POSITIVE CHANGES Martyn Price Fasteners celebrated their 50th anniversary with the opening of a new trade counter. With a new website and webshop due to launch soon, the business continues to evolve with the times as Sales Director Carly Pearson discusses with Torque Magazine… How is business in 2022, better than 2021? We had our best month for five years in April, and things seem really positive. April was a great month thanks to a combination of things. We had a couple of containers of stock come in and stock is such a rarity at times, so customers are shopping around more. Obviously 2020 fell off the cliff with COVID, in 2021 we started bringing people back and moving to some sense of normality, but it still wasn’t great. Then there was Brexit and issues with the Suez Canal, and it’s just seemed to have been one thing after another that’s affected business. But at the minute, we are steadily headed in the right direction.

Martyn Price introduced a range of trade goods and opened a trade counter as part of the company’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

56

torque-expo.com

Do you have many exports with Ireland and or Europe? And if so, has Brexit impacted that? It has from the paperwork side, you can’t just put an order in on Friday, now you have to know country of origin, you have to know the HS code and then a lot of stock is Chinese sourced, so you have to pay the duties. We’re trying to dual source at the minute, getting product from India and Taiwan, just to help with the Irish side of things. There has been talk that the government are going to get rid of the antidumping duty, which would be great, but at the minute it is what it is. Brexit has meant there’s a lot more paperwork now to get goods out the door even on the simplest of orders. It just takes a long time and we’ve seen a difference in the spend.

SPOTLIGHT MARTYN PRICE FASTENERS

Has COVID created any lasting changes with how you do business? It has opened our eyes to hybrid working. It works well for us and the staff, we’ve got a better work life balance for those that want it. For the staff in the office now, we offered them to work at home and they didn’t want it as it’s not for them. Some people need to come in and like the facetoface contact. Some people like it to not be in the same four walls at home 24/7. We still have some staff working at home, but they’re doing a good job, so we don’t see the need to bring them back to the office and make them commute. If everyone is happy, it’s good and it helps with staff retention and morale.

Carly Pearson celebrates the opening of Martyn Price’s trade counter with General Manager, Gary MacCauley

Supply issues are being felt by everyone – how has that been affecting Martyn Price? The cost of containers is still high. They’ve come down slightly, but they’re still very high. It isn’t creating a problem as it’s across the board, everyone’s prices have gone up. It’s a prob lem facing the entire industry, so it’s not putting us at a disad vantage as everyone is in the same boat. Shipping delays were an issue at the start of the year, and while it still isn’t great, there has been some improvement. At the moment, we’re noticing the projected dates are slipping by around a week to 10 days. In terms of receiving the container after it lands, that is getting quicker. There was a time when there weren’t enough drivers, so stock was sitting in the ports and we were forced to pay rent, but that situation has improved now as well.

// We’re building a new website and webshop and looking at getting the trade counter goods on there too. //

You’ve recently introduced a wider range of trade goods, how has it gone down with customers so far? It’s going well but it is still a work in progress. We’re trying to educate people that it is here using the power of social media. LinkedIn is a great way for us to connect with our customers. We’re building a new website and webshop and looking at getting the trade counter goods on there too. The plan is to try and expand it, but it’s getting the message out there first. Once the webshop is ready, we’re looking at including small product ranges that are easy to manage and we will go from there. Hopefully the webshop will be ready to launch over the summer.

it’s a standard item, especially given the way stock levels are at the moment, if customers can’t get it from their usual sources, they know we will find it for them. We also help with special orders. We will get things reworked and replated. Being in the Midlands, there are a lot of players and metalworkers, so we can send things out to have whatever is needed done to them. Having that knowledge and those contacts definitely helps. Then we have Lindsey, he’s like the bible of industry knowledge. He’s worked here for over 40 years and knows just about everything.

Martyn Price celebrated its 50th birthday this year, why did you choose to mark the milestone with the opening of the trade counter? It just fitted. We were looking at a trade counter anyway, and it just tied into when we could have launched. It was a double celebration. It was a good way to let people know and people came down and had a look and enjoyed a cupcake. Experience and market knowledge is obviously important in the fastener market. Martyn Price has been around for 50 years, do you find that industry knowledge from your long-serving staff members helps? We operate slightly differently to others. Most distributors will have their product lines, which they have imported and if they don’t have any specific stock a customer requests, then they don’t have it. However, we say we’re a one stop shop, and if someone is looking for something specific and we don’t have it, we will find it for them. It’s about customer service. Even if

58

torque-expo.com

What are the future ambitions of Martyn Price? Just steadily keep growing the business. Like Gary always says, we don’t want world domination, just want a nice business that makes a few quid and everyone is happy. So hopefully, the webshop will bring extra business. We have the trade counter, and we are going to continue to develop that. We’ve got room to expand if things really took off too. We are always looking at new product ranges to ensure we’re delivering on what our customers need. We recently introduced a small range of flange screws as we were getting a lot of enquiries. We’re testing it for now, but if it goes well, we will look at importing them ourselves. We pride ourselves on being able to identify things that others just don’t do, especially if it’s a regular request. That is part of our strategy. If we have them on the shelf, then customers don’t have to wait. www.martynprice.co.uk

TORQUE FOCUS QC LABS RPI PROMOTES JIM PALMER RPI, leading provider in rotary measurement and angular posi tioning devices, announced that Jim Palmer has been promoted to Sales and Marketing Director. Palmer is an RPI stalwart with over 20 years’ experience in the business. He joined the company as an engineer, and worked his way around the company, giving him an indepth understanding of its capabilities and potential. He was promoted from Sales Manager, where he was instru mental in increasing sales by over 60% in the past five years, thanks in large part to his extensive network of contacts. More recently he secured orders within a fortnight of Control, the international trade fair for quality assurance, the fastest this has ever been achieved (this process usually takes months, says RPI).

Palmer played an increasingly significant role during the pandemic, helping alongside MD Peter Marchbank to steer the company through this very turbulent time as its key aerospace market contracted. Now both will develop their three year plan which will take the company into new industries, and new applications. And with air travel back to 80% of its pre pandemic levels, this is a real opportunity for the company. RPI has recently launched two new products, OctoScan which improves productivity by up to 40% and TruMotion which deliv ers the accuracy of the standards lab onto the shopfloor. The company’s commitment to R&D has developed a pipeline of innovations which will be rolled out in the coming years. www.rpiuk.com Jim Palmer (left) and an RPI engineer working on TruMotion

TORQUE FOCUS QC LABS OWLETT-JATON > HOW DOES ONE OF UK’S LARGEST FASTENER BUSINESSES ENSURE QUALITY PRODUCTS?

OwlettJaton’s inspection process is rigorous, checking inbound fasteners to ensure they conform to the relevant national and international manufacturing standards. The product testing laboratory at OwlettJaton’s Head Office in Stone, Staffordshire, enables the leading wholesale supplier to carry out a wide range of precision testing in a dedicated fitfor purpose department. The laboratory comprises of two dedicated rooms – one for sample preparation and reworking of products, whilst the second offers a clean environment for performing inspection and conducting investigations on fasteners and fixings. Prior to any testing, the Purchasing department undertakes rigorous checks on global manufacturers before placing orders, ensuring that products conform to the quality standards required; this practice is in line with OwlettJaton’s ISO 9001:2015 accreditation. Three key aspects which are carried out by the Quality Assur ance team include corrosion, failure investigations and mechanical failure. Spot checks are carried out on a large proportion of stock as it arrives, but in the rare case of a customer reporting an issue, they are investigated swiftly and thoroughly. Corrosion testing at point of delivery involves identifying prod ucts visibly showing signs of corrosion, via a ‘finish conformance’ test. This predominantly relates to steel material products, irre spective of whether they are selfcolour, or have a surface finish including bright zinc, zinc and yellow, galvanised, Geomet, black phosphate, as examples. Inspections for surface discolouration, as well as pitting are carried out. If corrosion is detected, the entire consignment is immediately quarantined; this is to allow further inspection of the stock, as well as prevent stock from being issued. The next step in the process is to raise a ‘Supplier Concern’ report, which is systembased. Details of the findings are recorded, supported with images, and sent to the supplier. The supplier is requested to complete a threephase response including route cause, corrective action, and actions to prevent reoccurrence. If a customer reports corroded stock, further investigation is actioned. Batch numbers are requested to check existing stock for finish conformance, and samples are requested. Products are checked against national and international standards including BSI, ISO, DIN, and CE to establish the conformance. It is often a mis use of product that is the cause of corrosion, for example, using

64

torque-expo.com

grade A2 stainless steel in a marine environment. Corrosion can lead to more than just an impact on the visual aesthetics of the product. It can ulti mately lead to product failure, which in turn could potentially lead to downtime for repair and main tenance, leading to a large financial impact, as well as the risk of (potentially serious) injury. OwlettJaton thoroughly investigates the rare reports of product failure. Initial investigation determines if the product was or was not sourced from OwlettJaton, which can be quickly estab lished from the packaging and data from the label. If the product was not sourced from OwlettJaton, no further action is taken. Products that were orig inally supplied by OwlettJaton and show to have failed, are investigated. It is often the case failures are caused by human error from poor installation or incorrect application. A typical example of poor installation is a male or female threaded product (simply) being over or under torqued, causing damage to the thread or body. Reports of mechanical failure are investigated similar to those carried out for corrosion. The laboratory carries out tests to check torque integrity, and Rockwell B&C scales. Test Certifica tion data from approved suppliers is checked. If further investigation is required, samples are sent to an inde pendent testing facility, who are fully compliant with AS9100D and UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) approved. The samples are quality tested and inspected rigorously by the highly trained Quality department, using the latest measuring equipment. Tensile testing, microsurface, core hardness, proof load, carburisation, and hydrogen deembrittlement are exam ples of tests carried out if required. The cause of product failure is often the result of incorrect application. It could be as simple as an inappropriate finish, material, torquesetting, or class compatibility, such as grade 6 nuts with grade 10.9 bolting. The OwlettJaton website includes policies and documentation – including CE documents, relating to a wide range of products, readily available to download. www.owlett-jaton.com

TRADE SHOW RETURNS > BACK IN CONTROL

The 34th Control international trade fair for quality assurance took place earlier in Q2, following a two year interruption due to (you guessed it) the pandemic. More than 600 exhibitors unveiled QA innovations live in Stuttgart. Current, forwardlook ing developments include artificial intelligence (AI) technologies as well as inline production inspection processes. 18,531 expert visitors at Control 2022 experienced QA developments again in Stuttgart from the fields of vision tech nology, image processing and sensor technology, as well as measuring and testing technology – up to date, live and onsite. Cuttingedge QA technologies took up nearly 23,000 m² of floor space in six exhibition halls. Almost one third of exhibitors came from outside Germany – 6% came from Switzerland, 4% from Italy, 3% from the USA and more than 2% from the UK. Over the last three years since the last Control took place, quality inspection and quality assurance have taken on new importance due to increasing automation and digitalisation, contactless workflows and remote services, small lot sizes, zerodefects manufacturing and data analytics. For this reason, new developments covering all aspects of measuring and test technology, materials testing, analysis equipment, vision tech nology, image processing and sensor technology, as well as

weighing and counting technology, were eagerly awaited, so said the show organiser. Above all, the use of artificial intelli gence (AI) processes met with great interest as well. The fact that AI has long since arrived in production and significantly simplifies QA processes was experienced by the visitors at numerous exhibits. Even small industrial companies can easily get started with AI support, for example as demonstrated by Dr Dominik Lausch from Denkweit GmbH in Halle, Germany, together with Marvin Krebs from Xactools in Bönnigheim. Measuring procedure tempo and reliability have to be contin uously increased. This is supported by AI methods. Measuring, testing and inspection procedures as an integral part of the manufacturing processes is also a current issue. Inspection processes are taking place in environments with dust and vibration, and under time pressure, instead of in specially created measuring environments, which is resulting in new challenges for measuring machines and inspection equipment. “We’re working on this intensively,” confirmed Dr Heike Wenzel, managing partner of the Wenzel Group. The next Control international trade fair for quality assur ance will take place 912 May 2023. www.control-messe.de

TORQUE INTERVIEW

MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS AT TOGE Toge Dübel has a new corporate identity, with an accompanying new website, virtual showroom and a new concrete screw too… and that’s just the beginning, with some huge new plans ahead. Torque Magazine catches up with Head of Marketing Sabine Kienle and Head of Sales Steffen Märtsch for the inside story at the concrete screw pioneer… How’s business been so far in 2022? Steffen Märtsch: The beginning of 2022 was still under the influence of interrupted sourcing, but our supply chain is largely within 500 km and more than 95% within Europe so we were able to hold our delivery dates. Prices were rising dramatically, but the situation is still not predictable. The construction sector was expanding and the positive market for the concrete screw was growing in double digits, while other systems like wedge anchors were decreasing. We believe that the concrete screw will have a lot of potential also to the end of the year, even though we see that the market is cooling down a bit. Due to the abundance of new approvals and products as well as considerable investments in production and approvals at the Nuremberg site, we were able to strengthen our position as the company with the broadest product range worldwide. In addi tion, all approvals were processed with the DIBt (Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik), which has contributed to building considerable confidence in the quality of our products.

The new corporate identity is obviously a big project – why did TOGE decide this was the right time for the redesign? How long have you been working on it? Does it signal a new direction/approach for the business? Have you had any reactions to the launch so far? Sabine Kienle: Since we work purely in B2B, there hasn’t been much focus on marketing in the past. But in times of increas ingly strong competition, it is a necessity to clearly position TOGE in the market and establish it as a brand. TOGE has consistently developed over the years. And we want to make this development visible in our corporate presentation with the new corporate design. When revising our appearance, it was not only important to us to have a contemporary and international interpretation, but also to integrate TOGE’s core competence – anchoring in concrete – into our brand. To visualise this, we not only completely modernised our logo, but also added an international dimension. In total, we have worked on the project for about nine

TOGE's innovative virtual showroom is part of the revamped website months so far, but it is not quite finished. The actual roll out will take place in August 2022 after the launch of the new website and our virtual showroom. Speaking of the new website – these are always major projects but they are even more crucial since we have seen web shops grow following the pandemic and lockdowns. What kind of changes can your customers expect from the new site? Sabine Kienle: The redesign of the website was necessary because our presence no longer met the technical standard. The most important aspect for us in designing the site was to focus on usability and customer experience. People think and search differently – that’s why we offer users multiple ways to quickly find what they’re looking for. Whether via the applica tion options, the various base materials, customerspecific solutions or directly via product pages. The new website offers intuitive operation, restructured product information, a clear navigation structure, many ways to contact us, an extensive download area and, in addition, a completely new virtual showroom. The virtual showroom sounds like it might be a bit of a first for the fastener industry. Can you tell us a bit about it – who it is aimed at, what benefits it will provide, why you decided to launch it? Sabine Kienle: For us, trade shows are a very important part of our marketing mix. When we could not attend fairs during the pandemic, we came up with the idea of offering our customers an alternative way to meet. The concept is very similar to that of a trade show: the user walks through the showroom and can experience our products in 3D, learns about their application possibilities and can call up detailed information if desired. In addition to the gamifica tion approach, one idea in particular is important to us: to get into conversation with our customers, just like at a trade show. That’s why we are happy to accompany visitors through the showroom by phone. In contrast to a visit on a website, this

68

torque-expo.com

offers much more intensive opportunities for discussion. The feedback we’ve received so far on the showroom has been very positive throughout and confirms that this was defi nitely the right decision.

// The user walks through the showroom and experiences our products in 3D, learns about their application possibilities... and there is chance to get into conversation with us. // You’re also launching a new stainless steel concrete screw this summer. Can you take us through the benefits it will bring? Are there any specific markets or sectors where you think it will be particularly beneficial? Steffen Märtsch: One of the biggest advantages of concrete screws compared to all other anchoring systems in concrete is fast, easy and safe installation in combination with extremely high load values. Above all, the simple and fast processing under all application conditions is a very clear advantage that offers customers great benefits. We therefore developed a new version of our stainlesssteel concrete screw that offers significantly better installation behaviour – especially in critical situations. The result, of which we are very proud, is our new TOGE TSM high perfor mance LT A4 concrete screw. With this new concrete screw, we have achieved an easier and faster installation but still with one of the highest approved loads on the market. The new stainless version is available since 1 July, and you can order them from us right away.

In light of all the changes, will TOGE be letting the dust settle on those or can we expect more updates in the near future? Sabine Kienle: Our core competence is a true spirit of innovation and problem solving. As one of the pioneers of concrete screw technology, we are constantly working to improve our products and develop new solutions for our customers. Starting in the fall, we will be taking our research and develop ment to a whole new level: as of 28 September, we will be relocating parts of our Development Division to a new innovation centre, which is currently being built by the Würth Group and which is fully available to us for our development work. Over 70 million euros are being invested by the Würth Group into a new research centre, which will be equipped with the highest possible level of personnel and technology. The whole place will span 15,000m², including laboratories over 6,000m² and a 1,600m² specific test area for us.

Looking ahead, in terms of growth, are there any particular territories or markets you are targeting? Steffen Märtsch: We firmly believe in the technology of concrete screws, with the main benefits in fast and strong anchoring. Low edge and space distances, and the ability of deinstallation are just some examples why we trust in our technology. We have markets we target with alterna tive products, which can be installed much faster and with much lower effort – especially overhead (i.e. our small concrete screw TOGE TSM L versus ceiling anchor). In times of shortage of skilled workers, we offer product solutions which significantly reduce time and effort required for the installation. www.toge.de

SPOTLIGHT NISSEI

LICENCED TO BOLT Thanks to a clever dual thread, Nissei’s PLB v2 lock bolt can handle extreme vibration and is highly usable too. Yuki Okimoto, Mechanical Engineer at Nissei, explains the applications and advantages of the innovative lockbolt, and how the firm is looking for licensing partners...

N

issei is Japan’s only specialised manufacturer and seller of cylindrical die form rolling machines. The business started manufacturing form rolling machines in 1955 and continues producing them, which roll a great variety of parts above and beyond the usual threaded types. In addition to developing, manufacturing, and selling equip ment and peripherals of CNC form rolling machines, Nissei also offers Super RollRub a special form rolling oil.

The birth of the PLB v2 lockbolt Thanks to changes in Japan’s automotive market, including the increasingly widespread use of EV cars, demand has increased for new alternatives to the traditional bolt. Enter, Nissei’s PLB v2 lockbolt. It’s proven popular in a short time. The licensing business only started last year (April 2021) and companies worldwide have been contacting Nissei about the PLB v2 licence with the firm currently negotiating agreements, aiming to confirm with five companies worldwide by March 2023. The PLB v2 offers highlock performance and ease of usabil ity and maintenance. Yuki Okimoto, Mechanical Engineer at Nissei, tells Torque Magazine: “The most different thing compared to competing products is the lock performance that demonstrates the highest rank in ISO 16130 with the Junker vibration test.” So far, the PLB v2 has been introduced in the fields of mining, sieves, rail, vibration motors, rock drills and highway bridges and fences.

The PLB v2 lockbolt in use inside a rotary kiln, used in cement production The slowmoving outer nut will block the inner nut’s progression, which forms a mechanical lock. This is the secret to PLB v2’s selflocking design that no other fastening system has achieved, says Nissei. “Traditional double nut type bolted joints demonstrate a moderate locking performance and require multiple processes for tightening. However, PLB v2 can be tightened in just one process. As the inner nut lead is larger than the outer when the outer nut is tightened, so the inner nut will follow together.” Nissei adds that PLB v2 demonstrates a combination of the best lock and usability performance over other products. Yuki Okimoto says: “We consider it works best in applications where severe vibration occurs like in the piping flange portion in bridges or connecting plates in railroad facilities. In Japan it has been put to use largely in mines. We are hoping to work with the Linear Shinkansen railway lines and Track tire rime bolt. There’s positive feedback on the PLB v2 on YouTube: www.youtube.com/ watch?v=pNzy1nvTghE

How does it work? PLB v2 is an antiloosening bolt consisting of a dualthread bolt screw and two nuts with different thread lead angles. The inner nut is a multithread nut; the outer nut is a singlethread nut. When PLB v2 is subjected to vibration or a loosening force of any form, a loosening force is generated to the inner nut.

72

torque-expo.com

“We are looking for a licensee which can manufacture and sell PLB v2 under license agreement. Currently, we are interested in inquiries from Europe and America where the licensing business is active.” While eschewing the traditional importing route to market, potential licence partners can get assistance: “We can help the licensee company, providing the PLB v2 to the user in order to find out the potential sales at first stage as an option.” Interested parties can find out more via plb_bolt@nissei web.co.jp www.nisseiweb.co.jp

BUILDING & CONSTRUCTION TIMBER ENGINEERING

TALKING TIMBER CONSTRUCTION Timber construction takes many forms and each has its own fastener requirements. We take a look at some of the new products and range extensions hitting the market, to make the job easier and more efficient. Eurotec > Innovative solutions for timber construction projects

CLT inside corner fastening CrossLaminated Timber (CLT) construction is on the rise – with particularly advantageous properties, the flexible wood product is creating enormous development in the wood indus try. Building with wood has always been an innovative and sustainable way to build complex and modern buildings. In this context, the ecological building material crosslaminated timber (CLT) is becoming more and more successful. This brings with it many advantages that make building with the renewable raw material special. In this respect, Eurotec would like to make a contribution to strengthening timber construction with CLT and has dealt intensively with fastening and anchoring systems for prefabricated timber elements. In recent years, traditional timber construction has continued to expand and the use of mass timber represents an important enrichment for the industry. CLT is considered to be extremely strong and dimensionally stable and it is primarily used for modern building construction. The field of application of CLT extends over many areas: complete buildings as well as multistorey residential build ings can be constructed with it. All components such as walls, ceilings and roofs can be manufactured using just one build ing material. The advantage here is that crosslaminated timber is soundproof and heatinsulating. Largescale projects such as commercial and industrial construction can also be ideally managed with it. CLT is also used in extensive bridge construction. The CLT construction primarily impresses with the short and uncomplicated assembly time of the prefabricated wood elements. With selected fastening

74

and anchoring techniques, Eurotec supplies tailormade system solutions. Complex areas of timber engineering can be consistently covered. Optimum load distribution and the absorption of tensile and shearing forces are essential for many projects. The company offers a variety of solutions for highly stressed wood connections of all kinds: special system angles, shear angles for woodwood or woodconcrete connections and tie rods have been specifically designed for applications with CLT and make wood construction work considerably easier. In addition, the company also offers pull tabs to absorb tensile forces. These are suitable for connections on wood as well as on concrete and steel. Thanks to special screw holes, they have proven to be particularly efficient in assembly. With the versatile CLT system angle, for example, complex connec tions can be created that enable transmission of major forces. Wood connectors of this type not only bring a very effective, but also an economic advantage. Important information about prod ucts such as wood connectors and screws as well as technical details can now be found in Eurotec’s detailed CLT brochure. Due to the growing challenges and the rapid development of the wooden building material CLT, the company wants to give building with wood more importance and shape the industry together with its customers. Eurotec supports the planning and the realisation of projects with innovative products. The aim is to continue working on unique solutions for system connectors in order to meet future requirements in timber construction. www.eurotec.team

Fischer > FAFS the latest addition to fischer’s range of screws

Fischer PowerFull and PowerFast screws with full and partial threads are the economic, reliable and quick solution for timber, interior and drywall construction. The fischer chip board screw PowerFast II can be used for all types of wood on wood and wood on metal connections as well as in fischer plastic plugs with verified loads. The FAFS adjusting screw is the latest addition, offering infinitely adjustable installation of wood structures or frames. The respective versions of fischer’s full and partial threaded screws (PowerFull and PowerFast) are particularly suitable for loadbearing wood structures, reinforcements and renova tions, for wooden frame construction, outdoor areas, fastening rooftop insulation systems and much more. The product range provides the right screw type for every application in terms of diameter, length, head type, drive, thread, coating, material strength and other criteria – all with an assessment (ETA). Their clever designs make them easier to install while enabling gapfree and splinterfree fastenings close to the edge. The PowerFast group includes highperformance wood and chipboard screws with a partial thread, which allows them to be screwed in close to the edge without splitting. They are approved for soft and solid wood and are available in a stain lesssteel version especially for the outdoors. The PowerFull family specialises in challenging connections and reinforcing loadbearing wood structures. Thanks to their full thread, the wood screws transfer acting forces such as on main and secondary beam connections, false beam edges, shear tension bracings or shear connections. Any wood and steelplate wood connection can be carried out with the versatile fischer Power Fast and PowerFull screws. fischer’s PowerFast II chipboard screw provides added benefits with its broad range of applications, including any wood on wood or wood on metal connections as well as in fischer’s plastic plugs with verified loads. PowerFast II guar antees good loadbearing capacity and makes installation quicker due to its fast bite and short screwin time. Short edge distances and axial spacing are also possible without causing the workpiece to split. The PowerFast II’s clever geometry with a specially developed screw tip prevents tears to surfaces.

76

torque-expo.com

Countless fastening jobs require standoff installation, such as substructures made of wood used to clad walls and ceilings. The new FAFS adjusting screw with a European Technical Approval (ETA) is ideal for applications such as these. The PowerFast II version enables infinitely adjustable standoff installation. The FAFS features a clever clip on the head of the screw as well as many other technical ingenuities for this purpose. Its special operating principle makes positioning and aligning fixtures such as substructure battens quicker, simpler and more precise. Any unevenness in the anchor substrate can easily be levelled out and straightened. The unique thread of the PowerFast II screw provides a quick bite and is easy to screw in. The special shape of its clip prevents it from rotating during adjustment so that the screw head retains its flush posi tion in the attachment part without protruding. The FAFS can be disassembled at any time, if required. A thread is located on the outer part of the clip, enabling it to be unscrewed. The FAFS is suitable for pushthrough installation and is very userfriendly. Simply place the setting tool onto the bit and screw in the adjusting screw until it sits flush with the surface of the fixture. Then it is ready for the infinite adjust ment of the attachment part. The component distance can be infinitely adjusted with the bit without an additional setting tool and by altering the rotational direction. The clip remains in its position in the fixture while doing so. Predrilling with a diameter of 6 mm is recommended for wood slats with a strength of less than 30 mm when installed close to the edge. The guidelines of ETA19/0175 should be observed for approved applications. The product can be used in masonry with the fischer DuoPower 6x50 or UX 6x50 plugs, which also requires predrilling with a diameter of 6 mm. The current range includes four FAFS variants in measurements of 5x80 mm, 5x90 mm, 5x100 mm and 5x120 mm, each with a TX25 drive. The corresponding setting tool with a suitable bit is also available through fischer. www.fischer.group

HECO > HECO-TOPIX-plus now with extended range HECO helped revolutionise the screw market in August 2020 with the Timber Construction Screw HECOTOPIX plus. In the first step, the TDrive sizes in the diameters 3.5 6 mm were harmonised. In order to provide consumers with the drive sizes they are accustomed to, the Black Forest company has now expanded the range. “The right drive size is a question of faith in the TDrive segment,” said Jakob Braun, Product Manager at HECO. “There are many different habits and preferences here, some of which are regional, but some of which are based on personal experience.” To address this challenge, the Black Forest screw specialist has expanded the range and now also offers the HECOTOPIXplus as a countersunk screw with milling pockets in the HD25 drive size for diameters 4.5 to 6 mm. The range is rounded off with the Timber Construc tion Screw TCS in diameter 5 mm with a 60° countersunk head with milling ribs and a HECODrive HD30. “We think from the user’s perspective and offer what the customer demands and is used to. This also gives us the opportunity to address the real advantages of the HECOTOPIXplus in customer discussions – such as the MagicClose effect or the HECODrive with GripFit.” The new HECODrive concept is based on the well known TDrive. The drive in the screw and the slightly conical bit are precisely matched to each other. The produc tion of screw and bit is subject to tight tolerances and requires high precision.

If screws with HECODrive and HECODrive bits are used together, HECO guarantees the GripFit effect. This means that the screw fits precisely on the bit and is held securely by friction. The system does not work magnetically, but mechan ically, and thus also works with stainless steel screws. Because of this, it is also possible to work with only one hand. In contrast to standard TDrives, the screw does not wobble, which also makes it easier to apply and work with. But because it is ultimately a variant of the TDrive, the HECODrive is compatible in all directions: the screws can be screwed in with normal TDrive bits, and the HECODrive bit can also be used for screws with normal TDrives. “We believe that with our HECODrive we are offering users a unique opportunity to make their work easier. The compatibility of the system with standard offers makes it doubly attractive,” explained Jakob Braun. In addition to the range extensions with a view to variable drive sizes, HECO now also offers fitting screws with a diam eter of 3.5 mm. The head diameter is optimised for fitting connections and thus guarantees – equipped with a TDrive T15 – optimum fitting accuracy in standard fittings with 90° countersink. To meet the requirements of timber construc tion, this version is also available with milling pockets. www.heco-schrauben.com

Klimas Wkręt-met > Wood screws with new milling tip Klimas wood screws are a group of products that are characterised by a unique solution – a new milling tip. Now assembly can be up to 40% faster, says the firm. The new solution accelerates the “catching” of the wood and causes less resistance during screwing. The screws are designed for fastening wooden structures together. They are ideally suited for the construction of roof trusses, building frames, connecting wooden beams, or during the construction of garden houses or pergolas. Klimas offers a wide range of fasteners dedicated to roofers and carpenters. These products are the subject of constant research and testing. Technological modifications affect the increase of standards and improve the ergonomics of work. One of the new solutions is the unique milling tip of the wood screws. Wood screws with the new milling tip are a solution developed by the experts at Klimas, which responds to the specific needs of contractors. Tests conducted before the product was introduced confirmed that the new shape of the screw tip results in a decrease in screwing time by up to 40%. A double thread on the tip makes it easier to “catch” the wood from the start – a handy feature for anyone who has tried to connect pieces in hardtoreach places such as overhead. Then you just put the new edge into the wood, press down and turn it slightly, and the screw will stay in the substrate. The special shape of the milling tip freely cuts through the wood fibres. This function is ensured by additional cutting edges that cut through the wood fibres so that the screw can be applied without predrilling.

78

torque-expo.com

The 20% lower resistance during screwing means on the one hand faster working times and on the other hand less battery consumption when using batterypowered screwdrivers. The way in which the screw penetrates the wood is also influenced by the special wax coating, which significantly reduces the screwin torque.

Before installation, the appropriate length of screws should be selected depending on the thickness of the elements and the minimum depth of anchoring. Wooden elements should be free of defects (knots, cracks, staining, defects in construction and shape, mechanical damage). The installation of wood screws should be carried out using a screwdriver and a suitable tip for the TX drive type. www.wkret-met.com

STRIVING FOR PERFECTION CONDAT’s Forge and Cold Heading Business Developer, Florian Leys, talks to Torque Magazine about the company’s desire to find the best lubricant solutions for specific processes and new developments in the market. What makes a good lubricant for fasteners? Unfortunately, magic lube doesn’t exist, or we haven’t found it yet. However, what makes a good lubricant is the understand ing of the process in order to recommend the perfect lubricant suited for the specific process. Each of our customers have a different process in terms of speed/shapes/stages etc… depending of those parameters the recommendation will be different. We have more than 25 different lubricants dedicated for the Cold Heading industry alone! In the Cold Heading Industry, lubricants can be your best ally or your worst enemy. If you apply too much oil with the wrong viscosity then you will create hydraulics phenomenon in the dies and create cracks, on the other hand if you use the right lubricant then you can ramp up the speed of the machine and decrease tool consumption.

What is on the horizon in the development of new fastener lubricants? POLYMER WIRE > At CONDAT we believe that the next trend in the Cold Heading Industry is to use more and more polymer wire. We already know that the impact of the polymer residues on the oil is not neutral in terms of longevity and perfor mances, and we’re already working on it.

What are some of the main misconceptions of lubricants in the fastener industry? I can think of several. Firstly, flashpoint. Many customers are not aware of and don’t understand the concept of flashpoint, so often they ask us the product with the highest flashpoint which is not the right approach at all. The flashpoint is an indi cator but not a KPI that should be followed as close as we think. Also, global cost. The scale of expenses in the Cold Heading industry is the 1 to 15 rule which means that when the fastener manufacturers put 1 euro in the oil, they put 15 euros in the toolings. The goal is to decrease the range between the cost of oil and the cost of toolings. And finally, OEE (Overall Equip ment Effectiveness). Having a machine that runs longer will increase mathematically the OEE. If your tooling last 20% longer that means that there is less tool change and more running, which is the perfect combo.

CSR > CSR is now part of our professional life and our personal lives. CONDAT is extremely engaged and dedicated to respond at a strong CSR. Our vegetablebased product range is a small example of all the launched actions in this field.

ALUMINIUM FASTENERS > Due to the boom of the electric vehicle market, we know that the shape and the raw material will switch at some point, not entirely at 100% but we need to be ready and help our customers in this technical switch. Our product range is ready and have been experimented on for over five years now and we are 100% confident in our ability to do this switch.

Are there any new technologies or materials that have the potential to change how things are done in the market? Vegetablebased, group III based oil, and new extreme pres sure additives are part of the change. A lot is going on in terms of chemistry technologies in the fastener industry. There is pressure from the manufacturer and from different govern ments, making us work on innovative solutions such as our “3rd body technology” product range. The fact that new machines on the market are more sophisticated and our customers are able to make more difficult parts with some hard materials, we need to move as fast as the machine builders and manufac turers in order to improve our products.

// A lot is going on in terms of chemistry technologies in the fastener industry. // Vegetablebased is one of our main axis, they are three times more lubricious than a mineral based product and respond to the main EHS concerned. The other development axis is the PFT (polymer friendly technologies), going through a phos phate wire to a polymer wire so you drastically decrease your carbon footprint and your water usage which is compliant with a strong CSR policy. That’s why we did introduced the lubriscore at CONDAT. www.condat-lubricants.com

market DIP DISGUISES A FUNDAMENTALLY

STRONGER MARKET

With consumer confidence knocked amidst inflation, you’d be forgiven for feeling glum, but the long term trend is still hugely positive for tools and fixings in the DIY market, writes Will Jones, Chief Operating Officer at BHETA…

B

HETA’s latest economic report (30 June 2022) into DIY, garden, housewares and small domestic electricals, now sponsored by some of the leading suppliers in the market, confirms that while most sectors are experiencing yearonyear downturns, value and volume figures remain higher than prior to the pandemic. The report reinforces the thinking that funda mental upward shifts in the market are here to stay despite the decline in sales after the peaks of 2020 and 2021. New consumers have entered a previously stagnant market and new habits in terms of DIY and gardening will continue to reinforce a fundamental shift in favour of categories such as tools and fixings. And that is despite the current climate.

84

torque-expo.com

The last two years have seen amazing growth thanks to the surge in spending on homerelated categories and once the severest lockdowns were eased a trade upturn too. We are all aware that 2022 is a much tougher proposition. In the first quarter, DIY and gardening together declined by 15.4%. Albeit the Kitchen & Bathroom sector grew by 58.5% in the same period, this was principally because the lockdown in Q1 2021 meant last year’s market was artificially low, as tradespeople were unable to enter homes. The overall picture now is that total UK retail sales numbers have declined. The ONS reports that in the three months to May 2022, sales volumes fell by 1.3% when compared with the

previous three months. Growth in the wider UK economy is hard to come by with Gross domestic product (GDP) rising by just 0.4% in the three months to May 2022. A key factor behind the downturn is the sharp decline in consumer confidence. The GfK Consumer Confidence Survey positions confidence at its lowest level ever recorded in June due to a sharp rise in the cost of living as UK inflation hit a 40year high of 9.1%, not least because of energy prices.

//We may not feel this way at the moment, but the fact is we are enjoying long term growth. We must capitalise on that by making ourselves available to today’s trade customer in the way they want to shop – in store and online. // For tools and fixings specifically this has been manifested in a first quarter downturn leaving the sector sales value at £467 million, with £1,824 million predicted for the full calendar year. That would represent an 8.7% decline for 2022. Having said that, house prices remain strong as do the numbers of house moves, both of which support all homerelated spend. And lurking behind all the disappointing but, being real istic, completely predictable downturn figures is the salutary fact that while the market has declined compared to the phenomenal

2021, it still remains stronger than it was in 2019. We may not feel this way at the moment, but the fact is we are enjoying long term growth. So, it’s all about making sure we capitalise on that by making ourselves available to today’s consumer and trade customer in the way they want to shop – in store and online. Issues with both raw material and supply chain have remained apparent during the first quarter of 2022 with prices rising. It’s clear from BHETA member surveys that UK manufacturing – in part or in whole – is proving to be some current relief. It may also prove a longerterm strategy depending on geopolitics. Those are the big issues, and they need to be taken seriously in terms of strategy going forward. Talking of right now however, there are currently two major types of fixing that are seeing the largest growth. The first is plasterboard or hollow wall fixings as this is the most common wall construction in the UK. Maybe pretty obvious, therefore. A greater opportunity however is to translate that into the DIY market. Many DIY consumers remain bewildered by this product area, so that’s an opportunity for both education and perhaps product development. Tools and fixings that will work with both hollow and solid walls. Just an example, but in this market of underlying strength, whatever else happens we need to innovate and communicate to our new consumers with ideas that keep them enthused and loyal. It’s now all about how to make the most of things. For more information about BHETA retailer networking and BHETA market data, contact the BHETA Member Services team on 0121 237 1130 or visit the BHETA website www.bheta.co.uk.

SPOTLIGHT

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE REISSER-Schraubentechnik GmbH is planning ahead with a state-of-the-art logistics centre in Osterburken that is being built with growth and sustainability in mind.

R

EISSER Schraubentechnik GmbH is sending out a positive signal to the local economy with the groundbreaking ceremony for the new stateoftheart logistics centre in Osterburken. A warehouse of approximately 20,000 m2 will be built, measuring 100 metres wide and 200 metres long. Construction is expected to take around 18 months. Besides the hightech warehouse, a modern administration building is being constructed at the new site between the Odenwald and the Jagst valley. Michael Dartsch and Alexander Kimmerle, the two managing directors, say that the new logis tics centre represents a milestone for the company in terms of establishing the desired future level of service in the logistics sector, as well as for pursuing sustainable goals. “The investment in Osterburken is the largest in the company's more than 100year history. We're sure that the 45 million Euros of investment is worthwhile,” said Michael Dartsch. For Alexander Kimmerle, the expansion in Oster burken is a logical step. The space at REISSER's headquarters in IngelfingenCriesbach is too limited for the ambitious plans and growth targets of the manufacturer. “We can use the freed up space in Criesbach to expand our machine pool. This will ensure the further expansion of our production and so continue our growth trajectory,” said Alexander Kimmerle. Previously, REISSER has managed its warehouse logistics via external service providers with additional external ware houses. “However, lead times and process times have become longer and longer in recent years. In the future, the new logis tics centre in Osterburken will provide everything from a single source and there'll be no more external warehouses at all,” added Alexander Kimmerle. Another advantage of the new location is its good transport links, with direct access to the A81 StuttgartHeilbronn Würzburg motorway.

Once completed, around 60 employees will move from the HQ, taking their knowhow to the new location. The heart of the logistics centre will be an autostore system, with fully auto mated storage and order picking system. Automated highbay stackers are being used for the first time by the company. Alexander Kimmerle says: “in the new warehouse, the readyweighed and readytosell screw packs will be stored in a total of over 75,000 autostore containers.” “The goods come to the staff. In the weighing area there are heightadjustable assembly tables, with lifting aids at the pallet picking area.” More than 18,000 pallet spaces are provided in the pallet warehouse, served by the automated highbay stackers. “We can store over three times as many pallets here compared with the Criesbach site,” added Michael Dartsch. REISSER is relying on modern and sustainable construction methods, using a hybrid of materials. Wood is the more climate friendly building material, while prefabricated concrete elements – with their noise protection, fire protection and loadbearing behaviour properties – are the ideal components for a supporting structure. The company also expects many advantages from using a rear ventilated facade. REISSER is also using its own product range in construction: spacer screws are being used in the facade of the administra tion building, with sandwich screws provide stability in the facade of the logistics halls. The new building has been planned according to the standard energyefficient construc tion guidelines of the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) (Reconstruction Credit Institute). Energy saving measures will be implemented, including concrete core temperature control, photovoltaic systems, heat pumps and electric car charging stations. www.reisser-screws.com
