W E L L N E S S defining ‘wellness’ in an acute care world One out of every two adults in America has at least one chronic illness. Seven out of 10 deaths are from chronic disease. Despite this growing trend, our healthcare system is primarily structured and delivered around an acute care model. The vast majority of Americans wait to “take care of themselves” until troubling symptoms emerge, and then rely upon a 10-day prescription and the wisdom of a physician, trusting that he or she understands both the disease and the cure. Our only role is to comply with his or her ministrations. Today, however, most of what ails us will not be “repaired” by our physician’s interventions. The physicians are the first to say that it is a combination of the things that we do in our daily lives, genetics, and our habits, not what we do in a doctor’s office that is most predictive of good health. The men and women we serve have spoken clearly through numerous surveys. They say things such as, “I really like my doctor, therapist, rehabilitation worker, etc. and they make a real difference in my life. But, honestly, I don’t feel ‘healthy’. I don’t feel well.” In fact, we know statistically that far too many of the people we

serve will have a shorter life expectancy as a result of one or more chronic diseases. We can and must do better. This past year, we embarked upon a long-term commitment to focus on wellness. At a planning retreat recently, it was heartening to listen to the combined efforts of every clinical department as they introduced wellness principles and activities into all that they do. The Stairways organization has adopted each of the wellness dimensions highlighted in this Annual Report. A true commitment to recovery can only be achieved by an earlier commitment to healthy living. This must inform a radical new view of healthcare in America; we plan to do our part here. By the time you read this message in our next annual report, we will have celebrated the opening of Bloom Collaborative®—an expansion of our Center City Arts program, and dedication of five acres in the center of Erie to promoting physical, emotional and community wellness for all. Stay tuned!

“Wellness is not the absence of disease, illness, and stress but the presence of purpose in life, active involvement in satisfying work and play, joyful relationships, a healthy body and living environment – and happiness.” - SAMHSA Wellness Initiative THE IMAGES on the cover and throughout this report are from “The Art of Well-Being.” In this project, artists from Stairways’ Center City Arts created discs of fused glass, representing the Eight Dimensions of Wellness – discs of Physical, Spiritual, Social, Intellectual, Emotional, Occupational, Financial and Environmental Wellness. THE ART OF WELL-BEING Providing a visual representation of Stairways’ commitment to encourage wellness across every dimension of our clients’ lives, the artists of Center City Arts created eight fused-glass discs for a traveling exhibit. “The Art of Well-Being” has been featured throughout Stairways clinics and facilities, at Gannon University’s Schuster Art Gallery, in Portland, Oregon, via Mental Health America of Oregon’s celebration of SAMHSA’s third annual Wellness Week, and in Austin, Texas, at SAMHSA’s ‘Alternatives 2013’ national conference. As you flip through this report, we invite you to reflect upon each subject. Just as each disc is made up of many pieces of glass placed by many hands, each wellness subject is complex, interconnected and made up of many experiences. We hope they inspire an added measure of wellness to your day, no matter how small.

Hope is Real - recognizing Stairways clients who have put hope into action and have achieved success in their lives.

2013 HOPE IS REAL Award Winner - Josue Ocasio Josue Ocasio immigrated with his family when he was

3 from Puerto Rico to a poverty-stricken neighborhood in Philadelphia. At age 14, Josue started using drugs, and by 17 he was dealing. At age 23, he was arrested and sentenced to two concurrent life sentences of 240 and 480 years. Inexplicably, Josue was released after only 17 years in prison – something he sees as a gift from God. Josue moved to Erie to escape his harmful environment, but continued to live his life as an addict. His parole officer saw Josue’s need for counseling and medication, and mandated that he begin treatment at the Stairways Forensic Outpatient Clinic (FOP). With the help of his therapist, Char Myers, Josue worked to understand the magnitude of his addiction and mental health concerns. As Josue traveled the road of recovery, he sought ways to support his fellow clients. His first year of using Stairways services, Josue approached Betsy Wiest, the clinic’s operations manager, with the idea of hosting a Thanksgiving dinner at the clinic – a popular tradition that continues today. Clients take a cultural dish or custom to share, strengthening their community bonds and family pride. Another proud accomplishment of Josue’s is the origination of the first Spanish-speaking community gathering in Erie County for those suffering or recovering from alcohol addiction. At the Multicultural Community Resource Center, he organizes baseball games for youth groups. He serves as a mentor for FOP clients and continues in activities that encourage and support recovery. Because of his involvement in mental health services, Josue was asked to speak to the Pennsylvania State Budget Committee on behalf of the Mental Health Association, campaigning for mental health services under the threat of

budget cuts. He spoke passionately about the profound impact Stairways’ mental health services have had on his life. Rounding out a year of recognition for all he has achieved, in October 2013 Josue was awarded the Spirit of Courage Award from Erie’s Sisters of Saint Joseph. Recipients are individuals who have shown remarkable courage and whose story serves as an inspiration to others. Josue has been sober now for over three years and no longer requires monitoring by the PA Board of Probation and Parole. He continues to advocate for those suffering from addiction and mental illness, and to build up the community that helped him rebuild his life.

“Josue truly believes that God has a purpose for his life, and that purpose is to help others to get off the path of crime and addiction. He uses his life as a model for those who say that people can’t change. When you talk about courage, Josue is the definition of the word.” – Char Myers and Betsy Wiest, nominators.

“Wellness connects all aspects of health. Communication among mental health consumers, professionals, and primary care providers about health information is essential to overall wellness.” - SAMHSA Wellness Initiative

In October 2013, the Stairways Behavioral Health Fairweather Training Lodge in Erie, Pa, was presented with The Dorothy Berger Program Achievement Award at the 29th Annual Coalition for Community Living Conference in New Castle, Pa.

This annual event brings together the Fairweather Lodge community of professionals, lodge members and community supporters to share not only best practices related to living the Fairweather way but success stories regarding individual and program achievements.

Many who come to the Fairweather program are living in poverty, are homeless or are facing imminent homelessness. They gain employment and find the support they need to live independently. Of the 97 people served last year, 72 percent are now living successfully in a permanent lodge or out in the community. Most have literally come with “bags in hand” to get a chance at a new life. Often faced with multiple issues, they develop skills and friendships that change their lives and make them stronger to face challenges ahead.

They become part of a new family and, with the help of peers and counselors, find their abilities, confidence and selfesteem. Said one lodge member, “I never in my life felt like I was part of something. I couldn’t believe that my roommate bought me a pair of sneakers because I needed them.”
