AcademicScholarsatSTAHSbecomemembersofalearnedsociety:the1889Club,namedinrecognition oftheSchool’sfoundingyear.The1889Clubhasthreedivisions,eachofwhichhasalivelyand distinctiveprogramme.

VeraAtkinswasatalentedlinguistwhojoinedtheSpecialOperationsExecutive(SOE)inthe1940s,abranchofBritishMilitary Intelligenceresponsiblefortrainingandsendingagentsoverseas OurYear7toYear9AcademicScholarsarenamedafter Atkinsinhonourofherremarkableefficiencyandintelligence,whichwasaccompaniedbydeephumanityandasenseof responsibilitytoprotecttheagentsshewassendingtopossibledeath Aclevercryptographer,shewouldofteninterpret seeminglyindecipherablemessagesthathaddefeatedalltheeffortsofofficialdecoders

DorothyHodgkinwonthe1964NobelPrizeinChemistryforherworkonthestructuresofvitaminB12andpenicillin She remainstheonlyBritishwomantohavewonaNobelPrizeinscience,yetrejectedtheideathatshewasarolemodelforother womenorthathercareerwasheldbackbecauseshewasawoman OurYear10andYear11AcademicScholarsarenamed afterherbecauseshewasarealpolymathwhoactedwithintegrity Notjustascientist,butalsoahumanitarian,Hodgkinwas awardedtheLeninPeacePrizeinrecognitionofhereffortstobringtogetherscientistsfromtheeastandwestinpursuitof nucleardisarmament

EngagingintheacademicScholars'programmesinceYear7hashelpedmedeveloptheskillsofthinkingcritically, expressingmythoughtsconfidentlytomypeersandexploringmyacademiccuriosityinnewways. Ihavereallyenjoyed partcipatinginindividualandgroupprojectssuchasthecreationofapodcastoraTEDx-styletalkwhereIwasabletopursue myintereststhroughnovelandexcitingapproaches.TherangeofopportunitiesprovidedtomebytheScholars'programme havereallyshapedmyacademiccompetencesovertheyears,enablingmetohonemyexistingskillsanddevelopnewones. Indeed,itwasthroughtheScholars'programmethatIwasabletorealisemypassionfordebating-askillthatIwillnow carrythroughtherestofmyacademicjourneybeyondSTAHS.
