D e a r f r i e n d s, I recently visited the local craft supply store to pick up some yarn for a blanket I’m making a pregnant friend. As I walked through the aisles, I admired some of the silly dog costumes while also thinking, “Halloween already?” A few more aisles down I found myself face-to-face with a giant Santa Claus. It served as a not-so-subtle reminder that the holidays are quickly approaching and I’m already behind on my list of gifts I want to make for family and friends. Making holiday gifts is something that’s very important to me. I have a large family and we all exchange gifts. It can be an expensive time of year for me, so I like to make what I’m able to. It saves me a lot of money but I feel (or at least hope) the recipients appreciate the gift more than something they could’ve picked up at the store themselves. In years past, I set some lofty goals for myself in terms of what I’d be making. I’m arguably the world’s slowest knitter and yet half of my to-make list consisted of things that needed to be knitted. Over the years I’ve learned it’s better to recognize that I’m especially short on time during the holiday months so I need to make gifts that are quick and easy. Recently, my go-to gifts to make have come from the pages of Willow and Sage. I’ve found that just about everyone enjoys pampering themselves, so recipients are delighted to receive body scrubs, handmade soaps, and just about any other homemade body product. What I especially like about making body products is that they’re usually very easy to make in large batches, which can then be packaged into smaller containers. This is a lifesaver during the most hectic (and wonderful) time of year. If you’re looking for some gifts to make this year, you’ll love this issue of Willow and Sage. It’s packed with great recipes for a wide variety of uses and it’s loaded with clever ways to wrap and present what you’ve made. These are also great recipes to try out any time of year. Even if you don’t make anything to give to anyone else, consider making a few for yourself. After all, a quick at home spa day is the perfect break from the busyness that accompanies this time of year. My best,

Christen Hammons

To Make Mix all ingredients well. Pulse in a blender until well mixed. There are a couple options for application. You could recycle an old lotion/shampoo bottle with a pop-top or use a salt/sugar shaker. I put mine into a mason jar. I rub a little in my hands, and then apply directly. It blended really well with minimal rubbing. It is really thick and a bit clumpy, so I would recommend applying it with your hands and possibly using it as an overnight dry shampoo so you can rock your locks in the morning. You Wil Need

Essential oil (optional)* Knife: serrated Loofah Microwave-safe bowl w/ spout Rubbing alcohol/Clear alcohol Soap base: melt & pour, white* Soap cutter* Soap molds* Spoon: plastic Spray bottle

To Make

Cut the loofah into ½-inch thick rounds. You can adjust the thickness depending on the size of your soap molds. Check to ensure they will fit in your molds. Use a soap cutter to cut the soap base into ½-inch cubes. It took about 20 cubes to fill each mold. Place the cubes into a microwave-safe bowl and heat in 30-second increments until it is melted. Stir after each increment. If desired, place a few drops of essential oil into the melted base, and stir. Spritz the mold with rubbing alcohol. Pour a thin layer of soap into your mold, place loofah in mold, and fill the rest of the way up with soap. Allow to set overnight or place in the refrigerator to set faster.

Notes

x I recommend using a sharp serrated knife, such as a bread knife, to cut the loofah. x If you don’t have a soap cutter, I suggest purchasing one, as they are much safer to cut base with than a regular knife.

PACKAGING

LINEN SPRAY

Cut a piece of patterned paper large enough to wrap around the spray vial. Adhere paper to vial using dishwasher-safe decoupage medium (this type tends to adhere well to glass). Using a typewriter, type the names of your linen spray onto vintage paper. Tear words out and adhere them to the patterned paper using matte decoupage medium. Seal the paper with a coat of matte decoupage medium. Finish by tying a ribbon around the vial.

ESSENTIAL OIL BLENDS (PER VIAL)

Mix all the ingredients, with the exception of the essential oils (that way you can make more than one kind of spray for each batch), in a jar. Shake well. Fill the spray bottles/atomizers using a small funnel, and then add the essential oils using the recipes below. If you are only making one kind of linen spray, you can simply add 1 teaspoon of your chosen essential oil blend.

Beeswax Herbal Healing Salve BY K AYLA H AUPT

Herbalism was something that I never thought I could actually do. My slight fear of not truly knowing what I was doing and my small horizon of knowledge on herbs left me feeling inadequate enough to try any remedies aside from the realm of herbal teas. Teas I could do, but tinctures? I am still frightened by them! Then I came across the art of making herbal salves. <PMZM IZM UIVa LQ‫ ٺ‬MZMV\ [IT^M ZMKQXM[ W]\ \PMZM IVL \PM UIRWZQ\a WN \PMU aim to heal. WILLOW AND SAGE | Winter 2017 I

26

Double boiler (optional) Bowl Cheesecloth/Coffee filter/Flour sack towel 4 TB. beeswax* 2 tsp. honey Lavender essential oil* Popsicle stick

To Make

To begin, you need to infuse your oils. This can be done a couple of ways. If you want to infuse more of the herbs’ healing properties, I suggest using the long method. To infuse herbs over time, place the herbs in a jar with a lid and cover with grapeseed and coconut oil. Let them sit in a dark area for two to three weeks, shaking them daily. If you would like to go about the quick way of infusing them, as I did, heat and stir the oil mixture and mixed herbs in a double boiler set over low heat for about 30 minutes, stirring often. After the oil has infused, strain into a [UITT JW_T W^MZ KPMM[MKTW\P WZ I KW‫ ٺ‬MM Å T\MZ 1 ][ML I Æ W]Z [IKS towel and it strained like a charm. To begin assembling the salve, rinse out the pot your were heating your herbs in, as you are likely to have some herb bits still sticking to the sides. Pour your infused oil back into the pot, put the pot in the double boiler, and heat on low. Add in the beeswax, stirring constantly until completely melted and mixed thoroughly. Here is the tricky part, which is not all that tricky: You just have to make sure you are working quickly! Pour the wax and oil mixture into the container in which you would like to store your salve (a tin, mason jar, or other small container with a lid). Add a few drops of essential oil and 2 teaspoons of honey. Stir these ingredients in thoroughly. The salve will begin to set up in minutes, but continue to stir. (I suggest using a wooden popsicle stick, as the salve will cling to whatever you use to stir it.) If you like, you could place the salve in the freezer for about 10 minutes, stirring every minute or so. When it is set up, it should look creamy and slightly yellow, and it should smell amazing! To Make Cut soap base into small pieces and microwave for 30-second increments until soap base is entirely melted. Each partygoer will need their own soap mold to use. For this party, we used tart tins as our soap molds. Spritz them with vodka or rubbing alcohol before pouring the soap base so the soaps release easily from the molds. T

Pour soap base into each tart tin and add a few drops of essential oils until desired scent is achieved. Use a plastic utensil or paper straw to mix the essential oils into the mixture. For the pictured party, we used sweet orange and lavender essential oils. Sprinkle the tops with dried herbs, like lavender and dried orange peel, to add some exfoliant, or stir these ingredients into the soaps. Yoga Mat Spray

BY MOUNTAIN R OSE HER BS

When I lived in Culver City, California, I had a free membership to a small yoga studio, which was a lovely perk of working in the neighborhood. This precious little studio had just a few teachers who knew each student personally, and my practice there was guided through many special moments. 6W\ WVTa _I[ \PQ[ [\]LQW Å TTML _Q\P XMWXTM _PW _MZM kind, open, and understanding of the journey, but they also curated the front room with the most incredible handmade, earth-conscious products. They sold beautiful pink-rose amethysts to ground and bring love to your life, sustainably crafted yoga wearables, and wonderful bottles of all-natural yoga mat cleaner that I fell in love with despite its price. That bottle of organic witch hazel mixed with organic essential oils worked incredibly well. Cleansing my mat with this spritz of aromatherapy became part of my practice. Unrolling my mat and inhaling the fresh scent brought me back to where I was when I left the studio — a moment of peace, clarity, and joy. Little did I know at the time, but a yoga mat spray like \PQ[ Q[ M‫ ٺ‬WZ\TM[[ \W UISM ) JQ\ WN ZM[MIZKP IVL NWTTW_QVO Ua nose quickly led to my very own personalized recipe! While you should exercise caution when working with essential oils, especially when applying them to surfaces, you can easily make a spray that cleanses and brightens your yoga mat after your daily practice.

You Will Need Organic witch hazel Organic thyme leaves 6 drops organic clary sage essential oil 6 drops organic grapefruit essential oil* 12 drops organic geranium essential oil Jar: 8-oz. Strainer Spray bottle: 4-oz.

To Make Fill an 8-ounce glass jar half full with dried thyme leafs, cover with witch hazel extract, and infuse for two to three days. Strain the thyme infusion and pour liquid into a 4-ounce glass or plastic spray bottle. Carefully add drops of the essential oils. Shake well before each use, and spray liberally on your mat after each practice. Feel free to give it a wipe with a dry cloth if needed. To Make

Mix ingredients gently but thoroughly and then scoop them into mason jars. Label each jar with the ingredients you used, their properties, and the date you made them. These bath teas can last for up to six months. You can purchase muslin bags to use as your “tea bags,” but you can also cut muslin fabric into squares and tie them closed with twine. When you are ready to test them out, place the tea bag into your bath and leave it until you are ready to get out. Dump your herbs into the trash or compost, and reuse your muslin bag.

RENEW + UPLIFT

This bath tea has a perfect combination of ingredients to ease your worried mind and renew your skin. Lavender carries properties to ease depression and ease the mind. Rose hips help to regenerate new skin cells and can rehydrate to keep moisture in. Add Epsom salts to relieve sore muscles and aid in stress relief. Sea salt helps reduce water retention, increases circulation, and relaxes the muscles.

CALM + SOOTHE

This milk bath is heavenly! Lavender and chamomile work to soothe the mind and muscles. The skin-softening and moisturizing milk, oats, and coconut oil make for the perfect combination. Use this bath before bed to have a pleasant night’s sleep or to banish stress!

RELAX + REVIVE

This gentle bath is excellent for children, as spearmint acts as a much gentler herb than peppermint and contains less menthol. Spearmint helps to relax the body and cool it down by reducing your body temperature. Adding jasmine helps to increase your feelings of happiness and optimism, and enables deep breathing to soothe your worries. Revive your skin with jasmine’s effect on increasing skin elasticity. This is perfect for a morning bath to start your day! T

P E P P E R M I N T H OT CO COA

Melt & Pour Soap BY MELINDA BARNETT

WILLOW AND SAGE | Winter 2017 I

42

Every year my husband’s family does a holiday gift exchange. It’s a little like a white elephant exchange, but the gifts are supposed to be things that would be appropriate for anyone. For aMIZ[ 1 [\Z]OOTML _Q\P Q\ -^MZaWVM QV PQ[ NIUQTa Q[ [W LQ‫ ٺ‬MZMV\ IVL Q\ [MMU[ TQSM \PM ^MZa \PQVO that might make one person happy would make another one feel sad and cheated. A few years ago I realized that everyone uses soap, and handmade soap is always most appreciated. The real trick has always been coming up with recipes that are neither particularly masculine nor feminine, are mildly scented while still being interesting, and won’t trigger anyone’s allergies or sensitivities. This year I am making hot cocoa peppermint melt-and-pour soap. Now the exchanges are fun because everyone actually enjoys my gifts. This bar is refreshing and it’s perfect for gift giving or adding to a stocking. I’ve started keeping a bar of this particular soap in my kitchen because it has such a fresh, lovely scent. Like all melt-and-pour soaps, it’s really easy to make, and, with the addition of a strip of freezer paper and a small scrap of cocoa-colored trim, it’s pretty enough to give unwrapped! For the packaging, I found that the best adhesive to use on freezer paper is decoupage medium formulated for fabric. It’s a little thicker than most glues and tends to stay put while it dries. T

You Will Need

1 lb. melt & pour base: shea butter* 2 tsp. hot cocoa fragrance oil (Brambleberry) 1 tsp. peppermint essential oil* 1 tsp. cocoa powder Bowl: microwave-safe w/ pour spout Knife Soap Soap cutter: wavy* Soap mold* Spoon

PACKAGING

Decoupage medium: fabric (Plaid - Mod Podge) Freezer paper Paintbrush Scissors Trim/Lace

Ñ · ; b Cut the soap base into ½-inch cubes with a knife and put into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for one minute, and then resume microwaving in 10-second increments until the base is completely melted. Add the fragrance and essential oils, and stir. Carefully sift the cocoa powder into the base, breaking up any lumps as you go. Stir until all the cocoa is completely blended. Pour into soap mold. Allow mixture to cool. Cut with soap cutter. For a lighter- or darker-colored bar, you can adjust the amount of cocoa.

PACKAGING

Cut a strip of freezer paper to fit each bar of soap. Wrap the ends around and adhere with decoupage medium, applying it with a paintbrush. Cut a strip of decorative trim to go around each bar and adhere the back of the strip to the freezer paper in the same manner.

Notes

x A plain white or goat milk base will also work beautifully for this recipe. x For a less minty cocoa bar, cut the amount of peppermint essential oil in half, or increase the cocoa fragrance oil to 1 tablespoon and omit the mint altogether. x Keep in mind that if you add too much cocoa, the bar may stain towels and washcloths.

Shelter or e Soul: CR EATIN G SACRED SPACE AT HOME W ITH PLANTS, FLOWERS , ES S ENTIAL OILS & SMUD GE B UNDLES BY AGATH A NOVEILLE , AS SO CIATE EDU CATO R AT THE HERBAL ACADEMY What is home? Is home where we hang our hats, or is it where our hearts are? In many ways, our homes are both — as an emotional and spiritual refuge, a home provides shelter for so much more than our bodies. So often, though, we focus on the physical shelter aspect of our homes, keeping them clean and in good repair, and the emotional and spiritual upkeep fall by the wayside. Fortunately, we have an ally for this important tending work in plants. Simple 2-Ingredient

Makeup Setting Spray BY CHRISTEN H AM MON S

The last thing I do before leaving the house in the morning is give my face a generous spritz of makeup setting spray. It leaves my skin looking smoother while ensuring my makeup will stay in place all day. The problem is I go through it fairly quickly and it can be expensive to replace. I was shocked to learn just how easy and inexpensive it is to make. While this DIY version may not hold up quite as well as my favorite luxury brand, it still works great and I love using it for my everyday routine while saving my “fancy spray for special occasions. T

You Will Need

4 tsp. vegetable glycerin Distilled water Spray bottle: 2-oz. Essential oils (optional)

To Make

Measure vegetable glycerin and pour into spray bottle. Fill the remainder of the spray bottle with distilled water. Shake vigorously to combine the two ingredients. They will turn clear once the mixture is thoroughly combined.

Note

x Avoid using citrus essential oils, as they attract UV rays and can lead to a sunburn or sun damage.

Honey Oatmeal

SOAP BY KRIS SWAIN

Making soap can sound so intimidating, can’t it? I promise you this is a super easy craft you can make with some ingredients in your kitchen. Did I mention that it’s easy? Really, it is. These Honey Oatmeal Soaps are a great home craft that anyone can do. This is also a great slumber party/spa idea. The teens can make pretty soaps that will be ready to take home in the morning!

Allow the soap to set for at least 20 minutes. Then place in a cool spot to dry for several hours. Remove your soap from the molds. I like to place the soap on a couple of sheets of paper to dry it out a bit. This is something I also do with regular bar soap — it makes the room smell nice and helps them last longer. Three to four days is a good amount of drying time.

It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with lip balm. My purse is full of tubes and tins, my desk always has a few tucked away, and no matter how many times I tell myself I won’t buy any more, I always seem to. After seeing several recipes online for making your own, I really wanted to give it a try. I was so surprised by how easy it was that I instantly started thinking of ways to tweak some of the recipes I found. I think I know what all my gal pals are getting this year for Christmas! T

A Touch of Paper BY CHRISTEN HAMMONS

I never really thought much about how I wrapped gifts until I began working at Stampington & Company. I was quick to throw presents in gift bags or boxes and that was about it. Once I began working here, I took note of some of the artwork submissions we received and how much care went into the way they were wrapped and presented to us. Submission letters had a touch of fabric stitched to them. An envelope was sealed with a simple strip of decorative tape. Those little touches took something so ordinary and really elevated them to the next level. Simply Elegant

WRAPPED SOAP BY CHRISTEN HAMMONS

During the holidays I like to keep artisan soap on hand in case I need a last-minute gift for anyone. They make a great hostess gift and are also perfect for just about anyone. To make them a touch more special, I like to put a unique touch on wrapping them. Sometimes I’ll tuck them in a vintage hankie or wrap a bar in handmade paper. This time I took a different route, putting my vintage doily collection to use.

To Make

Wrap your bar of soap in a doily. You can tuck the edges of the doily in with a bit of tape or leave them hanging. Tie with a length of velvet ribbon. E ential Oil Solid Perfume BY MELINDA BARNETT

After reading the label on my favorite perfume box, I decided it was time to toss it out and make my own perfume recipes. I literally did months of research, but here’s the short version. In general, a well-balanced perfume will have three notes: a top note, a middle note, and a base note. The top note is often used as the “selling point” of a perfume, because it is the fragrance \PI\ PQ\[ aW]Z VW[M Å Z[\ <PM [IL \PQVO IJW]\ \WX VW\M[ Q[ \PI\ they don’t stick around very long and dissipate quickly. The middle note of a perfume is said to be the heart of the perfume, and normally makes up the largest percentage of the mix. The middle note is the second to dissipate. The bottom note is the longest lasting of the three, and will stick around long after the other two have left the scene, so it’s very important to choose a bottom note you really like. Sounds easy, right? Well, here’s where it gets complicated. Doing research for solid perfumes, I discovered that none of the information out there is consistent. I love jasmine and wanted to use it in one of my recipes. Some sites list it as a top note, while others say it’s a middle note, and still others say it’s a base note. I also love ylang-ylang and found it listed as both a middle note and a base note. I came to the conclusion that perfume making is truly an art rather than a science, and scents are very, very personal. That said, I am sharing my recipes here, but it’s also easy to make your own scents. One-note perfumes can be lovely too, particularly lavender or vanilla. <PM[M IZM ITT TQOP\ NZM[P Æ WZIT KQ\Z][ [KMV\[ JMKI][M \PI\¼[ what I like. Because perfume is an art rather than a science, there are no wrong answers, and experimentation is half \PM N]V After settling on my essential oil blends, I moved on to the form the perfume would take. I loved the idea of wearing a solid perfume around my neck in a locket so I could refresh it throughout the day. While doing my research about solid perfume suspension mediums, I came upon an interesting fact: Beeswax, one of the main ingredients in a solid perfume, has

a relatively low melting point. It melts between 144 and 147 degrees Fahrenheit, and it discolors if it is heated above 185. <PQ[ UMIV[ Q\ KW]TL KI\KP WV Å ZM QV \PM UQKZW_I^M [W 1 LMKQLML \W ][M I UMT\QVO XW\ _PQKP 1 [M\ \W <PM Æ I[P XWQV\ WN beeswax is 204.4 degrees, which means this is the point at which Q\ KW]TL KI\KP WV Å ZM 1 O]M[[ \PM XWQV\ PMZM Q[ ][M I LW]JTM boiler or a melting pot, but don’t microwave your beeswax. FOOT SOAK

Cut the sage leaves into strips. Measure all the ingredients into a plastic bag and shake until blended. Use a funnel to fill the vials.

PACKAGING

Use plain paper to make a template for the label. Using your template, cut out pieces of green and kraft paper. Adhere the tissue paper onto the brown kraft paper using ultra-matte decoupage medium. Adhere the brown paper to the vial using dishwasher-safe decoupage medium. Use a typewriter to type the name of the salt soak onto a piece of vintage paper. Carefully tear out the label strips. Adhere them to the tissue paper with ultra matte decoupage medium, leaving room for a piece of ribbon at the top. Wrap a piece of ribbon around the top of the vial twice, and adhere it in place with a few drops of stronghold adhesive. Cut one long piece of twine and one piece of gold embroidery floss for each vial. String a flower bead onto each strand of gold embroidery floss. Wrap and tie one string and one thread around the top of each bottle. Adjust the placement of the flower bead. Use a toothpick to put a dot of stronghold adhesive onto the back of the flower bead and allow it to dry facedown overnight. WILLOW AND SAGE | Winter 2017 I

To Make SACHETS

Cut fabric to required size for each individual sachet. For the trio of sachets, cut to a uniform size. Ensure seam allowance for three sides where edges will be folded over to close the pocket. Create a pocket by folding fabric on the vertical, applying gel medium to the edge, and folding over to close this side of the pocket. Leave for a moment to dry. Repeat for the bottom edge. Lavender

BODY MO US S E BY BETTER SHEA B UTTER Give something a little indulgent this season: Lavender Body Mousse. This easy-tomake mousse combines shea butter, coconut oil, almond oil, and grapeseed oil for massive amounts of nourishment and moisture. Of course, there is a little bit of fun in there, too: Pink edible glitter and sumptuous essential oils make this gift look and smell downright pretty. The scent of lavender will relax you and can even help you fall asleep _PMV aW] IZM PI^QVO LQ‫ٻ‬ K]T\QM[ LWQVO [W

You Will Need

2 1 / 2 oz. unrefined shea butter 1 oz. coconut oil 0.7 oz. almond oil 0.7 oz. grapeseed oil 30 drops lavender essential oil 10 drops neroli essential oil 1 tsp. pink edible glitter Double boiler Thermometer Electric mixer

To Make

Using a double boiler, gently melt the shea butter and coconut oil, stirring frequently. When almost completely melted, add the almond and grapeseed oils, stir well, and remove from heat. Set this aside for about two hours or until your oils are 90 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Now add the lavender and neroli oils. Adding essential oils to a hot mixture will “kill” the essence, which explains why you have to add so much to your recipes. Let the oils sit outside of the fridge for another two hours or until you can see a trace of them in the butters when you stir. Use an electric mixer to whip your mixture for two to three minutes. Put it in the fridge for 12–24 hours. Take it out of the fridge and let it sit for about two hours. Whip one more time. This is the moment of truth — it’s when your body butter is amazingly whipped and will stay whipped.

Note

x You can find edible glitter in the cake decorating section of your local grocery or craft store.

Ă‘ÂŽ¡ ; b Measure 1 cup of Epsom salts into a bowl. Add 1 drop of food coloring (if desired) and 10 drops of fragrance or essential oil. Stir thoroughly. To package, make a funnel that fits the size of the straw opening with a scrap of cardstock. Secure with a piece of tape. Use a dot of hot glue and pinch one end of the straw closed. Hold with a clothespin until cool. Pour a small amount of bath salt into the tube using the funnel. The straws will fill very quickly. Leave about ½ inch unfilled and glue end shut with hot glue. Pinch shut and hold with a clothespin until cool. Continue to make and fill straws. Punch tags from cardstock and handwrite your labels. Punch a hole in the tag and tie on with twine. To secure the bundles of straws, wrap them with colored twine and tie a bow. Add a piece of decorative tape folded over on the twine. Snip the end and stamp with the scent name. To use, snip or tear the ends off of the straw and pour the desired amount of bath salt into a tub of warm running water. You can vary the amount of salt you use based on your water hardness and desired bath.

Packaging Ideas There’s just something about wrapping up a gift in an extra-special way that makes the recipient feel that much more appreciated. The time and care you put into packaging speaks volumes. To give you some inspiration on ways to wrap your homemade gifts this year, we’ve gathered up some of our favorite packaging ideas we’ve shared over the years.

A Wintertime Wrap BY R ACHEL MCAFEE (originally featured in the Winter 2015 issue)

You Wil Need Baker’s twine Bottlebrush tree Cream crochet lace Glue Holiday flashcards Mica Miniature ornaments Resin frame

To Make

Wrap crochet lace and baker’s twine around each bar of soap. Tie embellishments like bottlebrush trees, miniature frames, and ornaments onto the soap. Tuck holiday flashcard into the lace. Brush cards with a little bit of glue and sprinkle tops of flashcards with a tiny bit of mica.

WILLOW AND SAGE | Winter 2017 I

122

packaging

You Wil Need Soap Baker’s twine Black paper Fine-point marker Tape White shipping tags

To Make

The soap we purchased came in a box, so we left it in there to wrap. You can also just wrap the bars of soap with no packaging. Wrap soap as you would any other gift. Cut a length of twine and wrap it several times around the soap, and then tie on a shipping tag. You can hand-letter the type of soap that is inside, or rubber-stamp it.

Super Simple Scrubs (originally featured in the Summer 2015 issue)

You Wil Need

Amber jar w/ airtight lid Inkpads: green & black Jute Label Rubber stamps: alphabet

To Make

Lightly rub a green inkpad over an entire sheet of labels. Repeat with the black inkpad. Your goal is to give the labels a slightly grungy, distressed appearance. Stamp your desired word and adhere to jar. Tie jute around the lid.

Fabric Soap Bundles (originally featured in the Autumn 2015 issue)

You Wil Need

Burlap cord Fabric Homemade/Artisanal soap Scissors Sprig of lavender (optional)

WILLOW AND SAGE | Winter 2017 I

124

To Make

Cut out a square of fabric about 12 inches on each side (this size can change depending on how large the bar of soap is). Place the soap in the center of the wrong side of the fabric. Wrap two of the opposing corners around the soap like you’re wrapping a present. Gather up the other opposing corners and wrap a piece of burlap cord several times around the gathered fabric. Add a sprig of lavender or another dried herb for a natural embellishment if desired.

Wax On: Super Simple Soap Packaging (originally featured in the Summer 2015 issue)

You Wil Need

Decorative tape Homemade soap Scissors Wax paper: unbleached

To Make

Cut a strip of wax the length and the width of the soap. Then, simply wrap the paper around the soap and secure it with a strip of decorative tape. It’s that simple but it looks great. This is a great way to use up all that decorative tape you’ve been stashing away.

Garden Herb

Salt Soak Vials

BY M ELINDA BARNETT (originally featured in the Winter 2016 issue)

WILLOW AND SAGE | Winter 2017 I

126

packaging

You Wil Need

Anvil Bath salts Charm: heart, copper Charms Cheesecloth File Hammer Jump rings: copper Metal hole punch Needle & thread Permanent marker Pliers: chain-nosed/needle-nosed Sewing needle & thread Sheet metal: copper, 24-ga. Stamps: alphabet Steel wool: super-fine, 0000 Test tubes Twine Wax

To Make

COPPER TAGS

Cut out an oval of copper measuring a little over 1 inch wide and a little less than 1 inch tall with tin snips. Punch one hole in each side of the tag and another at the bottom right corner (for the heart) with the metal hole punch. Put the tag onto an anvil. Stamp letters and designs into the tag, and then use the horn of the anvil (the pointy part) and a hammer to slightly curve the tag. If you don’t have an anvil, try carefully bending the copper piece around a dowel. File away any rough edges, burrs, or sharp places. Darken the letters with a permanent market. Allow the marker to dry, and then polish with steel wool, leaving the darkened marks in the grooves. Attach the heart to the bottom of the tag with a jump ring and pliers.

SALT SOAK VIALS

Fill test tubes with bath salts, leaving room for stoppers. Put stoppers into the vials. Wrap the seam between the stopper and the vial with a piece of jute string. Wrap the string around the vial twice, trapping one of the ends in the seam. Tape the other end of the string onto the middle of the vial. (The string will make opening the sealed tube easy.) Melt wax in a Crockpot. Dip the corked end of the vial into the wax, rotating it as you dip. Pull it out of the wax and continue rotating it to make sure the wax covers the end of the vial evenly. It takes at least three of these dips to completely coat the end of a small vial, and about 10 dips to coat a larger one. Let the wax cool for at least 15 minutes. Remove the tape and trim the string so there is a 1-inch piece remaining. Cut an 8" x 1" piece of gauze and tie it around the top of the vial. Attach a copper tag with a needle and thread.

Etching Made Easy (originally appeared in the Autumn 2015 issue)

You Wil Need

Amber glass jars: 9-oz. Etching cream: (Armour Etch) Paintbrush Protective gloves Vinyl cling stencil (optional)

To Make

There are some very beautiful vinyl cling stencils made especially for etching in stores. They cling to glass surfaces and can be cleaned with water and then re-used multiple times. We recommend that beginners use these stencils to start with, as they are practically fool-proof. Apply the stencil to your glass surface, making it sure it is firmly attached and smooth with no wrinkles. Paint a thin, even layer of etching cream onto the exposed areas of glass. Let the cream sit for 3–5 minutes and then rinse jar off with clean water. I recommend leaving the stencil on while rinsing and then removing it once the glass is completely clean. Pat stencil dry.

Get Rid of Dirt i Gardener's Soap (originally featured in the Summer 2015 issue)

You Wil Need

Bar soap Burlap Burlap bag w/ a loose weave (optional) Jute Needle & thread Scissors

WILLOW AND SAGE | Winter 2017 I

128

To Make

Cut a length of burlap that will wrap around your soap. Stitch the ends together. Fold the bottom up and stitch in place. You are basically making a bag for the soap. Place soap inside bag. Run jute through the openings in the burlap weave along the top edge, and knot. To save time, you can also just purchase drawstring burlap bags.

MAKING SURE YOUR PHOTOS ARE LARGE ENOUGH FOR THE PAGES OF WILLOW AND SAGE

What you need to know: Computer screens and printed magazine pages PI^M LQ‫ ٺ‬MZMV\ ZMY]QZMUMV\[ _PMV Q\ KWUM[ \W QUIOM ZM[WT]\QWV ) XPW\W \PI\ IXXMIZ[ \W JM huge on your monitor, may in fact be only a couple of inches wide when printed on paper.

So how can you tell if your images are large enough? This guide will walk you through the process of converting your images to 300 pixels/dots per inch (ppi or dpi), the desired resolution for print. Once you change the resolution, you’ll be able to see image dimensions (in inches, cm or mm) that will give you an accurate idea of how large your photo will be when printed on paper. Please refer to the table below for our requirements. What you will need: )[QLM NZWU aW]Z LQOQ\IT XPW\W Å TM IVL aW]Z KWUX]\MZ aW] will need image editing software. To get started, select one of the three programs on the next page — choose according to your operating system and/or what is available to you.

WI D T H PREFERRED F OR ART IC LES MI NI MUM FO R ART IC LES

Can I use image-editing software that isn’t mentioned in this guide? Yes. However not all image editing software has the capabilities you will need. Check to see if your favorite image-editing program has an image resizing dialogue box similar to those shown on the next page. It is important that it displays resolution (dpi/ppi) and dimensions (height and width, in inches and pixels).

What are some possible reasons my photos are too small? First take a look at your camera settings. Most cameras have different photo quality options (usually small, medium or large) that determine the size of the photos they output. In general it’s a

good idea to use the largest setting. Next take a look at how you are storing and editing your photos — especially if you use sites on the Internet for either of these needs. Get informed about how the sites you use resize and alter your photos. For example, a free Flickr account will not store your original, high-resolution image, but only smaller web-friendly versions of the photo (not adequate for print). In some cases there are ways around these issues (for example, a Flickr Pro account will save the original photo you upload from your computer), but the takeaway here is the importance of getting educated about the tools you are using. Read the FAQ section on your favorite photo sites, and test things out

yourself by using the process on the next page.

I’ve followed the steps shown on the next page, and determined my photo is too small to meet your requirements. What can I do? Unfortunately we can’t enlarge a small photo without compromising image quality. We can work with it to an extent, but it needs to be as close as possible to the preferred sizes above. If you’re working with an image you pulled from your blog or Flickr account, go back to the image file that came straight off the camera — perhaps in the process of editing and uploading the image was inadvertently resaved at a smaller size.

GETTING THE SOFTWARE Preview comes standard on Macs. Find it in the Applications folder or using the search bar.

GETTING THE SOFTWARE This is a good option if you already own Photoshop or Photoshop Elements; this program does not come standard and must be purchased, however it is widely regarded as the best photoediting tool.

GETTING THE SOFTWARE Irfanview is free image editing software for PCs that must be downloaded and installed on your computer. Go to irfanview.com to download.

INSTRUCTIONS Open Preview, then go to File>Open and select your image. Now go to Tools>Adjust Size. A box will open:

If the resolution box already reads 300 ppi, you’re done — just compare the image dimensions with our requirements (listed on Page 1). If the resoultion is lower than 300 ppi, read on.

First uncheck the Resample Image box. This is the most important step.

INSTRUCTIONS Open Photoshop, then go to File>Open and select your image. Now go to Image>Image Size. A box will open like the one below.

If the resolution box already reads 300 ppi, you’re done — just compare the image dimensions with our requirements (listed on Page 1). If the resoultion is lower than 300 ppi, read on.

INSTRUCTIONS Open your photo in Irfanview. Select your image, then go to Image>Resize. A box will open like the one below.

Due to this program’s capabilities you will not be resizing your photo, but merely viewing and interpreting the information displayed in the dialogue box above. .QZ[\ Å VL \PM Å MTL TIJMTML ,81 1N \PM JW` reads 300, great! Tick the circle for Set New Size,” and then tick the box for inches. Do not change any of the values; simply compare the dimensions, in inches, to our requirements on the preceding page. Then click Cancel and close aW]Z Å TM

Make sure the Resample Image box is unchecked. This is the most important step. If the DPI box reads 72, you’ll need to look at the top right of the dialogue box where it displays Current Size in pixels. At 72 dpi, your photo ideally needs to be about 2550 pixels by 3300 pixels (or larger). If your photo is close to these pixel dimensions, we’ll be able to convert it to print resolution for you (300 dpi) and print it as a full page (8.5 by 11 inches). There is no need to change any of the values, simply click +IVKMT IVL KTW[M aW]Z Å TM

Now type “300” into the Resolution box. The width and height dimensions should change. Take note of these dimensions and compare them to our requirements on Page 1.

In your submission, include a brief paragraph describing your project. Please include your name and mailing address in all emailed submissions. We need your mailing address so that we can send you a complimentary issue of the magazine in which your submission is published. Failure to follow all submission requirements may result in your work not being considered.

Sometimes, something submitted for one issue may be better suited for an upcoming issue. Other times, submissions are forwarded for consideration to the editors of our sister publications. For these reasons we may hold your sample for an extended period of time — 9–12 months is common. Rest assured that we will take excellent care of your work. In the meantime, if you move, please send a postcard or email to the editor with your new address. Due to the large volume of artwork we receive, Stampington & Company will return only those []JUQ[[QWV[ IKKWUXIVQML Ja []‫ٻ‬ KQMV\ XW[\IOM QV \PM NWZU of cash, check or money order made out to Stampington & Company. We are always interested in proposals for articles. If you have a unique story, project, or technique, please send samples of your work accompanied by a query letter outlining your article idea to the editor at the address below. Please note that the work itself often sells the article and we encourage writers and artisans who have not published articles before to submit ideas, as editorial assistance will be provided. If a technique you wish to share was learned from in a class, workshop, television, book, or other publication, Willow and Sage requires that you give credit to the author, source, or teacher and obtain permission to publish his or her technique prior to submitting it to us. Competitive editorial compensation is provided for all published articles. All samples, queries, and correspondence should be sent to the Editor, Willow and Sage, 22992 Mill Creek, Suite B, Laguna Hills, CA 92653. The editor also welcomes brief email queries: willowandsage@ stampington.com. No telephone calls, please.

Stampington & Company only accepts original submissions for publication consideration. All images used in submissions must be copyright free. Any techniques featured in submissions that are not the artist’s own must be attributed to the proper instructor, book, artist, workshop, etc. It is the responsibility of the submitting artist to ensure that no copyright infringement has occurred and that all submitted work is their own.

Stampington & Company will not accept simultaneous submissions. While your work is under consideration we ask that you do not submit the same idea to competing Web or print publishers. Likewise, artwork that has already been featured in other competing publications or sites will not be accepted. Publishing on your personal blog is permitted, but we ask that you adhere to our reproduction guidelines. Any questions can be LQZMK\ML \W W]Z MLQ\WZQIT [\I‫ ٺ‬
