Queensland 1860 6d Green, Perkins Bacon London print. Imperforate, Large Star Watermark, at $1,500 *UNDER* SG! -

MOST attractive used, with unusually light ‘sunburst’ rays sharp metal cancel, that as usual has lightly ‘pricked’ the wafer thin paper, leaving truly microscopic pinholes, mentioned for strict accuracy. Clean and fresh and flat, NO old hinges or remains, and with no usual aging or foxing, and deep bright colour as can be seen. Razor sharp plate impression from these London prints. AND I guarantee it is SG #3! 99% on ebay are simply the common later 6d perforated SMALL Star Wmk, with scissor cut off perfs! Value NIL. But the Clueless Bunnies still gleefully BUY them as ‘SG #3’. The impressions were set very close together on the printing plate, and good margins on these are most unusual. From RH margin of the sheet, with 3 massive margins - and a large chunk of adjoining stamp at left! Top copies are getting 4 figures these days. Superb eye-appeal as you can see. SG #3, £950 = $A1,900. SG Cat $1,900 - $1,500 UNDER cat $US260 at $A400 - Stock 572LQ

FIJI 1935 KGV Silver Jubilee 1/- Slate and Purple, major variety *MUH* ‘Frame Printed Double, One ALBINO’ - Cat $A3,200++ for $A1,250 -

A major, and seldom offered variety. The albino overprint is clearly visible in lower and left margins, fresh *MUH* - NEVER seen thus! SG #245a, Cat £1,600=$A3,200 as HINGED. For MUH you can add 100%+ for *anything* MUH, so a $6,500 type rarity in the real world. Clear RPSL Photo Certificate (1994) - ‘SG 245a, Frame Printed Double, One ALBINO - is Genuine’. These errors are readily spotted when in your hands, but are of course very hard to show on scans, so a clear Certificate is 105% ESSENTIAL on them. Attractive and very well centred, and with good perfs as you can see - at $1,800 *under* the HINGED SG cat price! Just $US925 at $A1,400 - Stock 692KA

Hoard of modern Australia peel and stick flat booklets face $340 - for just $A250! - Juicy and unusual lot from Estate. Wide range of designs and subjects and topicals as can be seen. SG cat is high on these of course probably $1,000 or so. So an ebay seller would do well offering these. HEAPS of images here - tinyurl.com/Oz-Bklt - Owner had wisely bought and kept these FLAT - most booklets are folded over into 3 sections. All are peel and stick, so fast and easy to use - indeed for anyone sending large letters ($7.50) or small parcels etc, you can glue one down, clear tape it on, or do as I’d do, have them cancelled, then placed in a cheap clear face 6’’ x 4” cello, so they stay protected and flat! Mostly 60c and 70c booklets of 10, but noted a few very recent $1.20s! FACE alone is $340 - out they go at just $A250 - save nearly $100 over his PO cost. Postage lots are NEVER seen under face, in modern peel and stick postage lots are generally 40 year old gummed issues, that by now often have little or no adhesion when licked, and are of weird and useless low values like 18c, 22c, 24c, 27c, 33c, 36c, 37c, and 41c etc, and are near impossible to use up. These will sell FAST at $A250 - Stock 654HG

Stamps in the News - Globally! Royal Mail: Czech takeover a step closer Reported at www.newstatesman.com

In April 2024, the owner of Royal Mail, International Distribution Services (IDS), received a takeover approach from Czech billionaire, Daniel Křetínský. The 320p a share offer was rejected by IDS. However, on 29 May 2024, the owners of Royal Mail accepted an offer of 360 pence a share, and the sale awaits government approval. The agreement comes a week after the UK general election was called and it promises to be an election issue. IDS is really two companies: GLS, a successful European parcel delivery company that made an adjusted operating profit of £320m last year, and Royal Mail, a public-service provider that is more than 500 years old, has a strongly unionised workforce, and made an adjusted operating loss of £348m last year. Kretinsky has promised £400m of investment in IDS, much of which will likely go into new innovations such as parcel lockers. The offer also contains undertakings in the agreement to protect Royal Mail and ensure it upholds its responsibilities to provide a universal public service for 5 years. However, the other way to reduce Royal Mail’s losses is for it to reduce its obligations to the public. Ofcom is currently considering plans including cutting deliveries to three days a week; the regulator has said that postal services are “unsustainable” in their current state. It would be a huge headache for an incoming Labour government if a new owner of the Royal Mail

took measures that led to even more union action, which might mean a need for government intervention. It would be still worse if a future owner decided to split IDS into two companies and dispose of the loss-making one. Already a number of commentators are concerned that Royal Mail “should remain British” and unions are warning that the Royal Mail brand could be gone forever in just five years with the proposed takeover. Labour’s shadow business secretary, commenting on the development in the sale of Royal Mail, said: “Royal Mail is an iconic British institution with a unique place in our society and infrastructure. Labour will take the necessary steps to safeguard its undeniable identity and place in public life.” The acquisition will take Royal Mail’s parent company off the London stock market 11 years after it was privatised. The billionaire, aka the “Czech Sphinx” has various other investments including shares of West Ham Football Club and Sainsbury’s. In a speech in 2015 Kretinsky said “We want to make money in industries that are dying because we think they’ll die much more slowly than the general consensus says.”

Royal mail: Ghana

Reported at www.forbes.com Ghana Post has announced a “digital asset collection” that commemorates the 25th anniversary of the reign of His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, or ruler of the Ashanti people of Ghana. This blockchain-based project consists of a postal collection featuring commemorative stamps that blend traditional philately with digital blockchain technology. “It’s not only the first crypto stamp for Africa, but it is also the world’s first crypto stamp to be a commemorative stamp for a king or a leader,” said a Ghana Post spokesperson. “The crypto stamps have a physical part, and a digital twin in the blockchain… it is a digital archive that will last

On May 7, Jay Wilkey was in his fifth month as a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. As he passed the home of one of his regular customers he noticed a slip of white paper peeking from the box. “There were two pieces of paper in the mailbox,” Wilkey recalled. “Two notes.” “The first one said, ‘Call 911. I have OD’ed [overdosed] inside on pills,’ ” Wilkey said. “The second one said, ‘No service. Cremation only. My sister will pay for it, she

owes me money. I’m dead inside.’ ” “I got a little nervous and I put my nose to the glass and saw a man’s legs on the floor. I called 911. The medics and fire and police arrived on the scene very quickly. I only took a picture of the scene so I could show my postmaster what had happened. She wanted me to go home. I said, ‘I’m fine.’ Thirty minutes later, I called in and went home.” The writer who left the notes was taken to a local hospital and is recovering. Wilkey’s response? “I was just doing my job. I did what anybody in the world would have done.”

Every May in the US, National Association of Letter Carriers carries out its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. It’s one of the largest one-day food drives in the country. Every year on the second Saturday of May, NALC

Stamps in the News - Globally! asks anyone that can to leave a bag of non-perishable items by their mailbox for their carrier to pick up. Last year the food drive collected over 2700 pounds of non-perishable foods and NALC hopes that the number will only increase this year. “We ask anyone that is willing to participate to leave in a bag. It could be a plastic bag; we ask for plastic bags because sometimes it rains when we’re doing this. Anything that is non-perishable, not expired, but non-perishable food items. And all you have to do is simply put them in your bag, sit them by your mailbox and your letter carrier will do the rest. And with everyone’s help, we can make this year’s drive an even bigger and better one than we had last year,” said Maria Gavin, a city letter carrier.

Israel offloads

Reported at www.timesofisrael.com A group of investors led by Milgam Ltd. and Phoenix Insurance has won the tender to buy Israel’s Postal Company for $US125 million, as part of a much-sought privatization process of the financially indebted state-owned firm. The consortium of buyers will receive government financial backing and has an option to cut another 500 employees. The privatization of Israel’s postal services comes after the firm underwent a major reorganization and recovery plan, including workforce reduction, to save it from financial collapse. The completion of the deal still awaits regulatory and ministerial approvals.

“We will work so that the privatization is completed as soon as possible, in order to open the market to real competition,” said Communications Minister. “I am sure that the winner will bring with him a new management, a new approach and above all a faster and better quality service for the benefit of Israeli citizens.” The government has been seeking to privatize its state-owned postal services since at least 2018. Israel’s postal service, notorious for its poor customer service and long lines, with letters arriving, if at all, with delays, has since 2022 undergone a NIS 1.7 billion recovery and financial stabilization process, and formulated a strategic and financial plan for the coming years. As part of the recovery plan, 1,050 full-time employees or about 20% of the postal company’s workforce were being cut, and postal offices were shut mainly in big cities.

Australia delivers intermittently Reported at abc.net.au/

Australia Post has effectively halved its letter delivery frequency with the roll out of the policy to only deliver letters every second day, as a generational shift in the nation’s postal services takes effect. That means within the same state, letter delivery times will be four or five business days, depending on location, and six to eight business days for interstate letters. Requirements for Australia Post to maintain a minimum presence nationally and in rural, regional and remote areas will remain unchanged. The federal government agreed to change the law to loosen Australia Post’s requirements for letter delivery, acknowledging Australians send far fewer letters than they used to The postal service had warned without the change its “long-term viability” was at risk. Australia Post says the changes will allow it to focus on expanding parcel posting and collection places, which have become its major business.

Trials of the change resulted in postal workers being able to carry 20 per cent more parcels on each delivery.

Italy drops the ball

Reported at https://au.news.yahoo.com A commemorative stamp honouring the founder of AS Roma soccer club, who was also an infamous fascist, was unveiled recently at the industry ministry, drawing criticism from Jewish groups and opposition parties. Italo Foschi founded AS Roma in 1927. He was also an active militant in Benito Mussolini’s National Fascist Party and involved in several well-documented attacks against political opponents. He was temporarily removed from top positions in the party because of his taste for violence, only to be reinstated and later given a senior role in the fascist administration established in Nazi-occupied northern Italy in 1943. The industry ministry is headed by Adolfo Urso, a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, which traces its roots back to a post-fascist group.

Both the ministry and AS Roma rejected any political motivation behind the stamp, saying Foschi’s fascist affiliation had not been taken into consideration. Fascism “was a youthful mistake on Foschi’s part, like many others,” a spokesperson said. A member of the industry ministry’s advisory committee that selects personalities worthy of appearing on stamps protested that the committee was not told about the choice of Foschi. The issuing of the Foschi stamp comes shortly after the announcement that a stamp will be issued later this month of Silvio Berlusconi, one of the most influential but also divisive figures on the right wing of Italian politics.

Reported at www.japantimes.co.jp Japan Post plans to raise postage rates for sealed items and postcards by 30% as early as October to help make up for losses resulting from the declining number of deliveries due to the growing use of digital communication. The increase in postage for sealed letters and other documents will be the first in 30 years, excluding adjustments for consumption tax hikes. For postcards, it will mark the first rate hike since 2017. “The fee hikes are the minimum necessary,” said a government official. Still, the magnitude of the increases is unprecedented in 40 years and likely to accelerate the decline in the tradition of exchanging nengajō New Year’s greeting cards. According to the ministry, the number of domestic postal items in fiscal 2022 stood at 14.4 billion, down by nearly half from the peak of 26.2 billion in fiscal 2001. Squeezed by soaring personnel costs, which account for three quarters of the total expenses, and higher fuel costs, the postal business incurred

an operating loss of ¥21.1 billion in fiscal 2022. It was the first loss since the privatization of Japan’s postal services in 2007. The ministry estimates that the loss will continue to grow without the price hikes, reaching ¥237.6 billion in fiscal 2025. But it said the price hikes this fall are expected to return the business to profit, to the tune of ¥6.7 billion. The fee hikes are likely to have the biggest impact on New Year’s cards, which constitute a large portion of household postal spending. The tradition of sending New Year’s greetings on postcards began in 1873 with the introduction of postcards, and New Year’s cards started being treated as special mail in 1899. New Year’s greeting cards with lottery numbers to win prizes, including stamps and regional delicacies, have been issued since 1949, with 4.459 billion such cards sold for 2004. In public comments on the proposed fee hikes, many people said they would not be able to afford sending New Year’s greeting cards with the postcard fee increase. It may only be a matter of

Liechtenstein celebrates a long disenfranchisement Reported at https://www.philatelie.li/

The 40th anniversary of the introduction of women’s suffrage in the Principality of Liechtenstein is being celebrated with the issuing of an embroidered commemorative stamp “The Cross - a Powerful Symbol.” Liechtenstein was the last European country to grant full voting rights to women, finally conceding to pressure in 1984.

In 1981, 24 committed women launched the “Sleeping Beauty Campaign”. Through their persistent activities such as effective public relations work, talks with the Government and parliamentarians and a campaign at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, their wish to vote finally succeeded in 1984. Two years later, women across the country were allowed to put their own crosses on the ballot paper for the first time and also stand for election themselves. One female candidate immediately made the leap into the then Landtag consisting of 15 members. The cross symbolises the cross used to mark ballots. Austrian embroidery manufacturer Hämmerle & Vogel handled the delicate job of “printing” the stamp.

Kenya flicks the fakes

Reported at https://techcabal.com Five months after the Kenyan government directed state corporations to audit their employees’ qualifications, the cash-strapped Postal Corporation of Kenya (PCK) fired over 29 staff with fake academic papers. The corporation sent the academic qualifications of employees to the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) for verification. The investigations are ongoing and could weed out more people who falsified documents to get jobs. This comes as the corporation readies a turnaround plan that will see it lay off over 500

workers as it rejigs its workforce to invest in new areas like e-commerce and cargo clearance. PCK’s business model has taken a beating after reductions in letter mail volume and new entrants like bus companies taking over the courier business. According to government disclosure, the postal service has accumulated $45.9 million (KES6 billion) in losses over the past decade. To stay afloat, the government has handed the company contracts to provide last-mile delivery of medical supplies and passports. It also has an agreement with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The dramas come hot on the heels of the Posta Kenya blunder where a promotional photo of customer service staff revealed two with three hands and one with a missing finger, causing much mirth on Kenyan social media.

7. Large enough within allowable size limits to support the customer’s daily mail and package volume If you have not replaced your mailbox in a while, the United States Postal Service is suggesting you upgrade your mailbox to avoid delivery problems. Some of the most common damage mailboxes endure over time include loose hinges, rust, peeling paint, a loose post or lost or deteriorated numbers, according to the USPS. While replacing rusted hinges or remounting loose posts will help ensure safe package safety, people should also consider upgrading their mailbox so that it can hold more packages. “Today’s newer mailboxes are wider and taller to accommodate delivery of items you’ve ordered online and reduce the need for notices left and trips to the Post Office to retrieve a package,” a spokesperson said.

Jaw-Dropping Result At Abacus Auctions May Sale Abacus Auctions Sale 255 21-24 May 2024

Described by auctioneer, Gary Watson, as “one of the most remarkable events” of his 45-year career, Test cricketer Alan Davidson’s Sydney Cricket Ground Life Member and Melbourne Cricket Club Honorary Member badges offered in a group of six medallions sold for 350 times estimate at Abacus Auctions. Two local collectors in the room slugged it out, neither saying a word nor even looking at one another. When the dust had settled, the final price was a remarkable $84,000 (including the 20% Buyer’s Premium). Abacus Managing Director, Torsten Weller,

said “This result took everyone by surprise. Our policy is to provide what we call ‘realistically conservative estimates’. Obviously, we were wide of the mark on this one, but the enthusiasm of our loyal clientele provided this fantastic result for our vendors.” The Abacus sale ran for four days from Tuesday 21 to Friday 24 May. Over 2800 lots with total estimates of $2,035,000 went under the hammer. Almost 80% of the lots were sold, for $1,612,000 (+BP) or just over 80% of the presale figures. The first two days were devoted to stamps

and postal history of the Australian Colonies up to 1912. A marvellous collection of New South Wales essays and proofs included three classic progressive die proofs with combined estimates of $14,000 that were bid up to $25,320 (all in-

dividual prices include the 20% BP). Also from NSW, a significant collection of forgeries, offered in twenty lots with estimates of $8700 did very well, selling for a total of $14,550. Until 1859, what became Queensland was known as the Moreton Bay District of NSW. No fewer than 45 lots were offered by Abacus, with most finding new homes. The highlight was one of only two pre-1842 letters from the interior, when the area was still a penal colony. Estimated at $5000, it went for $8700. Following on from the firm’s notable success with three auctions devoted to Dr Don Pearce’s collection of South Australia, on this occasion the very fine collection of De La Rue issues formed by Adelaide philatelist Harry Lower had been consigned. Proofs, specimen stamps, varieties & errors, multiples and Officials all did well. An appealing section of Departmentals, all on DLR 2d oranges, produced several strong results including $10,800 for the ‘M.R.G.’ (= Main Roads Gambierton, now Mount Gambier).

philatelic news Three covers were included: estimated at $2500 $2500 and $1000, they went for $3000, $4560 and $2880 respectively. Amongst the Tasmania, Malcolm Groom’s Stamped to Order Postal Stationery included the marvelous unused set of 12 pictorial Postal Cards that were never issued, which sold for $3600, and his Tasmanian Mail ‘quadrupleton’ wrapper used as a parcel label fetched $2280. Tasmanian postal history produced a couple of outstanding results: $16,200 was paid for the 1854 Penny Courier cover to Canada (estimate $5000), and a newly discovered 1858 cover with the stamps cancelled with pen-strokes, estimate $1000, was bid up to $5040. The ‘Doncaster’ Collection of Victoria was one of the best offered in Australia for many years. The extensive array of mostly used HalfLengths, including rare shades and some huge examples, attracted much interest and prices that ranged from solid to very strong. The very

attractive SG 1b that graced the front cover of the catalogue (estimate $1000) went for $4080. A large 1d SG 23 sold in 2012 for $288, on this occasion brought $810. Day Three opened with Commonwealth of Australia collections, for which there was energetic bidding. The best result was $6000 for an array of plate number and imprint blocks (estimate $1750). Unusual lots included the recently authenticated proof of the 1931 6d Airmail stamp in greenish brown. This more than doubled the estimate, at $6900. A completed World War I War Savings booklet, a rare survivor, went for $1800. Remarkably, there were three 1919 Ross Smith England-Australia flight covers in the sale, from three different vendors. The two ‘standard’ examples sold for $5040 and $5520. The other, with a KGV 1½d brown added, had never before been on the market and made $8700. Australian Postal History included five covers with State/Kangaroo combination frankings. The average estimate was $600 but they sold for an average of $1007. A gorgeous pre-decimal/ decimal combination franking bested the $500 estimate, selling for $900. From the Territories, a New Guinea 1937 Coronation presentation booklet sold for $720

against the $200 estimate. A wonderful Norfolk Island parcel tag with three Ball Bay values, listed at $750, did rather better at $2520. In the Rest of the World sections, numerous single-country offerings, mostly from a collection formed in South Africa up to the 1930s, attracted often strong bidding. The leading result was for the Cape of Good Hope Triangles that included nine of the famous ‘Woodblocks’. Estimated at $5000, this lot was forced up to $8400. The Militaria & Medals sections included a British Military Medal awarded to an Australian that made $1680 and a rare 1941 Atlantic Charter Medal that was invoiced for $3360. The Coins & Banknotes featured many collections & accumulation lots that were hotly contested. A modern Australian $50 ‘Mis-Cut’ error banknote offered as part of a consecutive run of five that doubled its $500 estimate to finish at $1020. In the Worldwide section, an 1825 Central American Republic 8 reales bronze coin reached $960 (estimate $200) and a 1977 Hong Kong Chartered Bank $500 banknote made $1260 from its $800 estimate. As indicated at the top of this release, Sporting Memorabilia of all flavours continues to sell well. A 1902-03 Melbourne Cricket Club

medallion, only the second such issue, more than doubled estimate at $2160. A very elusive but dilapidated souvenir booklet from the Australian cricket team’s visit to Malaya in 1927 dwarfed the $200 estimate, selling to a local enthusiast for $2040. “The rarest Bradman cricket card”, the 1932 Friends Temperance Union issue, estimated at $3000, reached $4800. Cigarette & Trade Cards featured a strong section of popular ‘Scanlens’ Australian Rules Football issues. Virtually all the complete sets and rare singles sold, most of them above estimate. The in-demand 1963 Graham ‘Polly’ Farmer card was the top performer at $4560, almost matching the Bradman result. Oft-discarded wrappers & packaging are gaining appreciation also: a small group of store-display boxes, in rather mixed condition, reached a staggering $2520. A number of quality consignments are already to hand for Abacus’ sales later this year, but further material is always welcome. The next auction, scheduled for late-August, will include an array of “Early Stamps of the World”; the Cocos and Christmas Island postal history collections of Bruce Haynes from Perth; and the exceptional display collection of ‘WWII Mail to and from Civilian Internees & POWs of the Japanese’ formed by New Zealander Lindsay Chitty. Also on offer will be the usual wide range of single items, small groups, collections & accumulation lots to be found in each sale. A comprehensive collection of solo KGV Heads with all watermarks, perforations, dues etc would be well nigh impossible. A simplified approach would be much more easily attained and of course way more affordable. The 1/4d value is of course the hardest of all to find...but they are out there! I have also included an O.H.M.S. cover with OS perfinned stamp. So let’s look at a few examples and their possible values. Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for July 2024. This month’s column looks at Australia and New Zealand new issues, International Reply Coupons of the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, new literature on postal stationery and forthcoming exhibitions. Picturing War Postal Cards Besides the four postal cards in the Picturing War issue reported in the last Postal Stationery Column, a fifth card (Figure 1) was issued on the same day, 16 April 2024. The reverse of the card showed a photograph of three Australian Army soldiers entitled DIGGERS GRIN WHEN A CAMERA WAS POINTED THEIR WAY. The soldiers are identified as Snowy Nugent, Corporal Piper and Paddy Mitchell. The photograph was taken by George Silk who was appointed during World War II. He arrived in the Middle East in May 1940 and produced images in Greece, Syria, Lebanon and Tobruk, before photographing the war in the Pacific. mation to 5 million households in regional Australia to help people connect. To help people look after their mental health and wellbeing, Australia Post is proud to partner with Beyond Blue to distribute prepaid postcards encouraging connection and raising awareness of mental health services. If a ‘ding’ on your phone is known to give you a little hit of dopamine, then what about a hand-written note in the post? Sending a postcard or a letter to someone is a great way to lift their spirits. Yet, sadly, postcards and personal letters are few and far between in most letterboxes. Posties slip plenty of bills and business mail through letterbox slots, but not enough handwritten notes. Australia Post and Beyond Blue want to change this. It’s why, for the past few years, we’ve been running a postcard campaign. “It all started during the lockdowns in 2021 in a bid to help address the growing mental health crisis in Australia. We wanted to use our national network to connect more people with mental health information,” says Jessie Downs, Community Relations

& Partnerships Manager, Australia Post. “Based on the wonderful feedback we received that year, we decided to keep it going.” The postcards contain two parts. The first includes mental health tips and strategies from Beyond Blue that anybody can apply to their everyday lives. The second section is detachable— it’s a beautifully illustrated, prepaid postcard that people can use to write a thoughtful note to someone they hold dear. Sending postcards like the ones supplied by Australia Post and Beyond Blue isn’t just a nice thing to do. It leaves people with a positive glow. Last year, 73% of those who sent the card to others felt that it had a very positive effect on their own wellbeing. The cards prepay postage within Australia as ‘Australia Post supported mail’. The reverse of the card and the attached information portion have an image of a fairywren on the reverse. Around Australia Flights 100 Years Postal Cards Two postal cards (Figures 4 and 5) were issued on 21 May 2024 as a set for $4.50 in the standard small format and entitled. The issue marks the centenary of the first two flights, by seaplane and landplane, around mainland Australia. The first began on 6 April 1924, when Wing Commander Stanley Goble

Postal Stationery and Flying Officer Ivor McIntyre set off from Point Cook, Victoria, in a Fairey IIID seaplane, A10-3. Travelling anti-clockwise, they battled poor weather and constant engine trouble. On 19 May, after 44 days and 13,600 kilometres, they landed near St Kilda beach, Victoria, to a warm welcome from a 10,000-strong crowd. The second round-Australia trip, this time in a landplane, was conducted by the Civil Aviation Branch of the Department of Defence to inspect air routes and to test the long-distance efficiency of the De Havilland D.H.50 aircraft. The crew comprised expedition leader Lt Col HC Brinsmead, pilot Captain EJ Jones and mechanic RH Buchanan. They departed Point Cook on 7 August, travelling anti-clockwise around the continent for 12,324 kilometres and arrived back at Point Cook on 29 August. The cards were designed by Andrew Hogg. On doing so the postage rates to other countries were standardized at 1½d for postcards and 2½d for letters. As a result, a number of new postal stationery items were issued such as the 1½d international rate postcard (Figure 9) and the 1½d + 1½d internation rate reply card (Figure 10) issued by Queensland in 1891. Besides the change in the postcard rate, the cards also had to meet the UPU’s specification as to the size of the postcard and include a heading in French. After the capture of Finschhafen, the Japanese forces in the area withdrew towards Sattelberg where they sought to hold the Australians before launching a counteroffensive, which subsequently threatened the landing beach. This attack was repelled by American and Australian forces, with heavy casualties being inflicted on the Japanese. In the aftermath, the Australians went on the offensive, capturing Sattelberg, and then advancing towards the Wareo plateau. Dreger Harbour was used by Allied forces after the capture of Finschhafen in October 1943. Very good lot at $479 (COCT4)

Norway coll 1856-1980 in new ‘Lighthouse’ classy album + slipcase - Ret $A6,250 for just $A999! Lovely looking, near all postally used collection in a huge, and classy literally ‘as new’ top quality ‘Lighthouse’ German made black album with matching hard slipcase - retail of the empty album and slipcase is well over $450 ALONE! SG cat of the stamps is noted neatly in erasable soft 4B pencil for ready checking on each item or set. This totals £2,903=$5,800, plus the $450 album, is a $A6,250 collection here. 100s of stamps and impossible to assemble out here. A very conservative and popular stamp issuing country, and VERY completable down the track. Condition looks a cut above average - as it was formed in Norway, where ‘condition is KING’! A wonderful solid nucleus to complete, and add to. Retail $6,200, for about 15% retail at $US650 at $A999 - Stock 546SH

Great Britain 1840 2d Deep Full Blue – clean and fresh, 3 margin example - $A2,000 *UNDER* SG cat! -

Totally free of usual thins and creases etc, and condition guarantees on these stamps are VERY important. It is 184 years old now. Clean and fresh and flat, and *totally* free of the usual old hinges, and gook and gunk and foxing, common on these. Bright colour, and razor-sharp plate impression as you can see. Totally free of the creases and toning that truly be-devil this issue - which ARE present on most examples. “The World’s First Stamp” and sourcing a nice one from day #1 is wise. Even a 2 margin roughie these days can cost you $300! Lettered ‘E.L.’ with lovely and unusually crisp black ‘Maltese Cross’ cancel as you can see. Every collector wants a ‘1d Black’ and ‘2d Blue’ on the frontispiece page of their album, no matter WHAT country they collect – and if your initials are ‘E.L.’ - even better! Lovely deep bright colour as you can see. Removed from a lovely old style GB collection today. ANY 2d Blue is FIFTY times scarcer than any 1d Black - a solid FACT, despite the weird cat prices. This is the seldom seen Deep Full Blue shade, SG #4, cat is £1,200 = $A2,40 - and bought very well to clear at just $A2,000 *UNDER* SG price - $A399 - Stock 613LK

New Zealand 1985 “CRISTMAS” spelling error PAIR! -

A very interesting Story. These stamps were printed in the Netherlands, by the well-known and widely used Enschedé Security Stamp Printers, in Haarlem. The stamps were all printed and perforated and ready to go, when someone noticed that the word CHRISTMAS had been added and approved by the Dutch printers, and NZ Post, and mis-spelled “CRISTMAS” (with missing H!) and not CHRISTMAS spelling. I understand that is more in keeping with the European/Dutch spelling, so no-one noticed - not sure, but it got right through to the proofs being all signed off on, and being printed and perforated, and darn near issued nationally.

The stamps were rapidly re-printed for then heavy NZ Christmas mail useage, and the originals were SUPPOSED to be destroyed. A very few pairs leaked out somewhere, and I bought them near 40 years ago, and offered them in the local magazine for $A500 the pair, and they sold fast. The same original paper, gum, and perfs as the issued stamps of course. One client I sold these to has recently passed away, and I bought them back this month from the Estate. The set of singles, along with a set of 2 normals as illustrated above – a complete set of 4, is just $US175 at $A275 the quartet - Stock 672LW

Stamp News - 45

Greetings from Great Britain One of the themes Royal Mail has released stamps for over recent years is what some call music icons. Most recently there was the Spice Girls issue in January. 2024. Don’t worry I am not going to write about or show these. No, I am going to use this issue to write about another and completely different, very influential and well known band, Pink Floyd. This topic came to me while talking with a friend who found the Pink Floyd stamps while sorting through an older album and was shocked to see that the stamps were issued in 2016. It has been a while and since then we have seen Royal Mail issue stamps for David Bowie (2017), Elton John (2019), Queen (2020 and 2022), Paul McCartney (2021), The Rolling Stones (2022), and Iron Maiden (2023). That is a lot of stamps! But for now just Pink Floyd and a few interesting covers which I hope you enjoy seeing and reading a little about this band. In many ways, from a philatelic point of view, we might remember the issue for the album covers that are shown on the stamps. Fig 1 shows the basic

Figure 1 46 - Stamp News

set of 5 stamps and with the Royal Mail Edinburgh cancel. The stamps present the album covers on three 1st Class stamps and three £1.52 dominations. The covers are, from top left to right - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn which was the band’s debut album. It was named after Kenneth Grahame’s classic children’s novel The Wind in the Willows. For some real trivia; did you know the image was captured on film using a prism lens given to the photographer by George Harrison? Stamps are so much more than just an image! The next stamp - moving left to right - shows the album cover to Atom Heart Mother. This was the band’s fifth album and their first UK number One album. More trivia: it was also the first of their LPs not to feature the band’s name on the front of the sleeve, and the cow’s name, it was Lulubelle III. The third 1st Class stamp shows the album cover to the one album I am sure we all know - The Dark Side of the Moon. This album had sales in excess of 45 million copies worldwide and it remained on the Billboard chart in America for over 40 years after its release or so I have read. Of course this is the album showing the classic prism image. I have one cover to show with just this stamp with a postal cancel of London NW8, which is the Post Code for the Abbey Road district in London where the album was recorded. More trivia, this is what

Michael Dodd Figure 2

makes stamp collecting so interesting I think. The Dark Side of the Moon album was recorded at the Abbey Road studios from May 1972 through to January 1973. The album title is an allusion to lunacy rather than astronomy and Roger Waters is credited as the sole author of the lyrics. In Britain, it reached number two, spending 364 weeks on the UK charts. I have read it is the world’s third best-selling album, and the twenty-first best-selling album of all time in the US. Perhaps this is outdated given the success other artists have had over recent years, but no matter it is still a remarkable achievement. The other three stamps were the £1.52 values and again moving left to right on the bottom row of

three stamps we have the album cover to Wish You Were Here, then the Animals, with the photograph of Battersea Power Station and the floating inflatable pig, which was designed by Roger Waters, and finally the cover to the album The Endless

River Another cover showing 4 more stamps issued in a miniature sheet was produced by Buckingham Covers, Fig 3. A far more, let’s call it, psychedelic image, more in keeping with what some regard as the bands early music genre although they were originally recognized as a R & B band.

Figure 3 Stamp News - 47

Greetings from Great Britain Figures 5 & 6

You will also notice the postal cancel shows a wall image – to recognize one of the bands most prolific songs, Anther Brick in the Wall. Let me finish with two more covers. The first, Fig 4, shows the 6 stamps and again was issued by Royal Mail. This has the “psychedelic “ cancel from Cambridge. Why Cambridge? Well, that is where Syd Barrett, one of the founding members of the band died on 7 July 2006. He was only 60 years old. The second, Fig 5, shows the miniature sheet issued on a Royal Mail cover. I mentioned these 4 stamps earlier. I imagine you are asking one final question. How did the band get their name? I am glad you asked. The name is derived from the given names of two blues musicians whose records Syd Barrett had in his collection, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. All this from a few stamps. What a wonderful hobby! 48 - Stamp News

SAN MARINO: A PHILATELIC GIANT I have been writing stamp columns here in Stamp News Australasia for more years than I care to remember and it has never been difficult to come up with ideas for new stories. Recently when I needed to rearrange my Italian area collection it dawned upon me how interesting the stamps of the Republic of San Marino are. We find some of the world’s smallest countries in Europe. One of these tiny states is San Marino which claims to be the world’s oldest still existing republic. Readers wanting to find out the exact location of San Marino should get hold of a map of Italy and then locate the city of Rimini on the Adriatic coast. This is a rather famous beach resort which can be found in the north-east of Italy. San Marino is located due west from Rimini. Most holiday-makers in Rimini also make a day trip to the tiny republic. Tourism is undoubtedly one of the main sourc-

es of income for the people of San Marino but the country has a diversified economy which also comprises agriculture and some industrial production. If you asked juvenile stamp collectors in the 1950s and 1960s about how San Marino made money they would most likely suggest that it came from the sale of postage stamps to collectors. It is a fact that at the time San Marino was a prolific issuer of postage stamps and that the country always selected the most popular themes to attract as many buyers as possible. In retrospect, many of all these colourful large-size pictorials are quite attractive. At the time San Marino used the lira as its currency. One lira was just worth a tiny fraction of a cent but this didn’t stop the San Marino Postal Service from releasing stamps with denominations of 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 lire. There were no postal rates which corresponded to these lowly denominations. It is

Figure 2

Christer Brunström more than obvious that they were printed to be sold to beginning stamp collectors with limited financial resources. When leafing through a stamp collection assembled by a young girl or boy in the 1950s or 1960s you are more than likely to find a selection of these pictorial low values from San Marino. Today the philatelic output from San Marino is no different from that of most other countries. However, the lira has been abandoned and San Marino now uses the euro. San Marino basically comprises a rather large mountain – Monte Titano – with its three fortified peaks. These three mountain peaks have adorned numerous San Marino postage stamps. In fact, they were included on the first stamps issued in 1877 (Fig. 1). The stamp shown nearby has an inverted surcharge which makes it even more interesting.

Figure 3

The republic is completely surrounded by Italy and it has about 33 000 inhabitants. A rather curious fact is that San Marino has more cars than inhabitants. San Marino is the third smallest country in Europe. In Italian the name is Repubblica di San Marino which has sometimes been abbreviated on its stamps as just RSM. It is not really known when this rather curious country was founded but very possibly in the year 301 by the stone mason Marinus (Fig. 2) who was depicted on a stamp issued in 1923. This person is also known as Saint Marinus, a man who wanted to escape the persecution of Christians ordered by the Roman emperor, by seeking refuge in the Monte Titano mountains sometime in the early 300s. Ever since then San Marino has been an independent republic. Let’s now take a look at some of the more in-

Figure 4

Stamp News - 51

SAN MARINO: A PHILATELIC GIANT teresting San Marino issues. The republic lacks a proper airport but this didn’t prevent the post office from issuing airmail stamps in 1931 featuring a view of the Monte Titano. Just 9 500 copies were printed of the 10-lira top value which makes it quite a scarce set. In 1933 the German Graf Zeppelin made a visit to Italy and San Marino had a number of the airmail stamps (Fig. 3) overprinted and surcharged with new values to be used on covers carried by the airship. Interest must have been huge as more than 10.000 sets were issued and sold. San Marino Zeppelin covers are quite valuable today. In 1849 Italy was still a divided country with the Papal States right in the middle and a number of kingdoms and duchies and very little cooperation. This state of affairs was something that Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1862) wanted to change by creating a unified state. He met with a lot of opposition and there were times when he needed to go into hiding. That’s why he went to the mountains of San Marino in 1849. This rather memorable event in Italian history was commemorated on a set from San Marino in 1949 (Fig. 4). The policy of issuing very low denominations for the philatelic marketplace began already in the

1940s. However, each set also had a number of higher values with the highest denomination being printed in rather low numbers. The 1954 sports set is a typical example of this policy. 60 000 copies were printed of the 200 lire top value (Fig. 5). This was more than enough to meet local postal needs but by this time San Marino was eagerly collected not only in Italy but also in many other parts. The postal authorities in the republic have obviously been most conscious about the marketing potential of San Marino’s postage stamps and there have been many stamps promoting stamp collecting. One issue which I find particularly interesting was a set of five issued in 1988. The five stamps are actually a beginner’s guide to thematic philately. Shown nearly is the 50-lira value (Fig. 6) which tells the story of the foundation of the republic. To conclude let me just mention another interesting fact about San Marino. In 1970 it was the first country to release a set of stamps featuring Disney characters. There is nothing to suggest that Mickey Mouse and his friends are more popular in San Marino than in the rest of the world but the republic’s marketing officials were remarkably good at picking out a topic of great sales potential.
