Stamps in the News - Globally! A Gross profit in the US Reported at www.greysheet.com
In mid-June, Robert A Siegel Auction in New York New York has sold key items from the Bill Gross collection, the most complete of United States postage stamp collection ever put together. Over two days some $19.2 million was bid for 317 items at this auction. There were over 370 registered bidders for the sale, 100 unique buyers, and a 100% sell-through rate on all 317 lots in the auction. The sale’s premier item was an 1868 Benjamin Franklin stamp of a variety for which only 2 known examples exist. It sold for $4.3 million which is the highest price ever paid for a US stamp. The second most valuable item was an Abraham Lincoln stamp which sold for $2.8 million and was also one of only 2 known. Of the two stamps, the Lincoln stamp proved to have been the better investment, purchased in 1986 for $190,000 versus the cost of the Franklin stamp
for which Mr. Gross traded the plate block of the inverted Jenny in 2005, which cost him $2.97 million. While the Franklin stamp may have realized a lesser paper profit, it garnered the Gross collection significant publicity since it was the last stamp he needed to give it the stature as the most complete US collection ever, enhancing the provenance of the entire collection. Bill Gross’s career in asset management garnered him the moniker “bond king” and his role in postage stamps as a collector, investor and a stamp donor of millions of dollars to charity from stamp sales has made him the “Stamp King” as well. The catalogue for this auction is itself a memorable and valuable resource which can be downloaded at the Siegel website.

Scottish National Party’s election campaign. Holyrood officials are currently investigating the potential use of stamps paid for by member’s expenses following a complaint. Under Holyrood regulations, members are given up to £5,500 annually for stationery and postage costs but are strictly barred from using the cash for party political purposes. It was reported recently that one SNP staffer had posted in a WhatsApp chat that they had “inherited a lot – and I mean a lot – of second class stamps”. An individual in Mr Swinney’s office replied: “The stamp fairy is very useful when it comes to campaigns.” A complaint, apparently from another SNP staffer, suggests stamps had been passed to Westminster candidates to target voters. Mr Swinney said he had been told by staff there had been no use of the allowance for SNP campaigning. He went on to describe the message referring to the “stamp fairy” as “humorous remarks made in a WhatsApp channel”. The ‘stamp fairy’ appears not to have been that useful - SNP are on track to win only 9 of the total 57 seats in Scotland, down from its previous 48 seats in recent UK election.
Dog days for Royal Mail 1
Reported at https://postandparcel.info International Distribution Services Limited, the owner of Royal Mail, has been served with an £878 million collective action claim relating to anti-competitive behaviour in the “bulk mail” market. The claim has been filed on behalf of Bulk Mail Claim Limited. BMCL has been formed for the purposes of bringing the claim on behalf of an estimated 290,000 class members who were overcharged as a result of Royal Mail’s behaviour. A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We confirm that we have received an application for a collective proceedings order from an entity called Bulk Mail Claim Ltd which we consider to be without merit and we will defend it robustly.” Bulk mail is a type of mail typically sent by organisations such as retailers, charities, local au-
thorities, banks, utility companies, advertisers and publishers. It includes bills, council tax statements, bank statements, utility company bills, charity fundraising appeals, advertising mail and some magazine subscriptions. In 2018, the postal regulator, Ofcom, found that during 2014 Royal Mail engaged in conduct that affected competition in the market for the delivery of bulk mail and had abused its dominant position, in breach of EU and UK law. Ofcom fined Royal Mail £50m. The proposed claim is for damages resulting from Royal Mail’s breach of competition law. It is brought on behalf of all persons who purchased or paid for relevant bulk mail services at any time after 10 January 2014. The proposed claim alleges that Royal Mail’s anti-competitive behaviour cut off competition for bulk mail delivery services from 2014 onwards, with the result that senders of bulk mail were overcharged throughout this period. The proposed claim seeks to achieve compensation for this overcharge. A Bulk Mail Claim spokesperson said “collective claim is the only fair and efficient form of redress in this case, given that there are hundreds of thousands of affected customers and it would be commercially unviable for them to bring individual proceedings.” A case management hearing to determine next steps in the claim will be held by the Competition Appeal Tribunal.

Royal Mail has celebrated the United Kingdom’s most popular dog breeds in a set of 10 stamps issued in June. Presented in two horizontal se-tenant (side-byside) strips of five, the stamps show 10 different breeds of dogs. The stamps in one of the strips of five are valued at the first first-class rate (currently £1.35), and those stamps in the other strip are valued at the second-class rate (currently 85 pence). The first-class stamps depict a Siberian husky, Chihuahua, cocker spaniel, Pembroke Welsh corgi and a pug. The second class stamps depict a dalmatian, Jack Russell-type terrier, Labrador retriever, Stamp News - 7

border collie and whippet. The dogs represented on the 10 stamps exemplify the popularity of different breeds with Britons from a wide variety of demographics. However, this innocuous seeming new issue has drawn sharp criticism from animal rights campaigners wo have called on Royal Mail to withdraw the stamp featuring a pug, claiming it “glamorises ailing animals”. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) criticised the new dog-themed collection of stamps for including the flat-faced pet, which can often suffer from serious breathing, eye and skin issues because of decades of intensive breeding. A spokesperson commented, “There is nothing first class about promoting pugs or representations of breathing-impaired dogs.” Pugs are twice as likely to experience one or more disorders annually as other dogs and can no longer be considered a ‘typical dog’, according to the Royal Veterinary College. 8 - Stamp News
The Kennel Club also discourages potential owners from buying dogs with overly exaggerated features and blamed popular culture for the popularity of these pets.

A bill that was recently passed during the 2024 Louisiana legislative session will combat pet overpopulation across the state. The act allows the Pet Overpopulation Advisory Council to design, manufacture, and sell commemorative stamps at the retail level. The proceeds will support spay/neuter programs around the state. The pet stamp program is modelled on the state’s duck stamp program, where duck hunters are required to purchase a stamp each year. The program has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue since its inception in 1988.

Pos Malaysia, the Malaysian national post and parcel service provider, continues its retail transformation journey with the launch of its latest Pos Shop convenience store. The new outlet, located within the General Post Office (GPO) in Pahang, marks the 17th Pos Shop to date. The Pos Shop in GPO Kuantan offers a one-stop shop for the local community, combining post and parcel services with a convenient retail space for daily essentials and a Pos Kafe, where customers can enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee, purchase snacks, beverages and more while waiting for their parcels or before heading to work. Pos Malaysia aims to open an additional 33 Pos Shop outlets across key states by the end of 2024, bringing the total to 50 outlets nationwide. This strategic move underscores the company’s commitment to providing greater convenience and value to communities across the country.
Shopping therapy in Australia “We encourage pet owners and animal lovers to purchase the stamps,” said a spokesperson. “The obvious selling point is that the proceeds will benefit spay/neuter programs that are designed to reduce our state’s burgeoning pet overpopulation.” The stamps are charity labels and cannot be used as postage stamps. They will cost a minimum of $15, but the council will also offer first edition, collector’s edition, and different sizes to spur additional sales. The council will also oversee an annual contest to determine the pet that will appear on each year’s stamp. The entry fees will also be used to subsidize spay/neuter programs. The funds will be awarded each year through grants to Louisiana-based veterinarians and nonprofits.

in equality and women’s rights in Spain. The new stamp features Carmen de Burgos, a ground-breaking Spanish journalist. The women were chosen according to their role and their contribution to their respective knowledge areas (arts, science, politics, etc.) All the stamps were designed by Isa Muguruza, a young Spanish illustrator capable of creating a unique universe that empowers, through art, the figure of women. For the artist, it is a campaign that pays tribute to fourteen characters who have paved the way in feminism and for whom she feels true admiration. All of them are strong, independent, fighters and dreamers. Correos has organised a touring exhibition which will travel to the main Spanish post offices. The cities were chosen according to the depicted women’s birthplaces, so that locals can pay tribute and acknowledge their work. Each woman has its own space in the exhibit, showing the original pictures used for the stamps and depicting texts about their lives and work. Correos claims to have been a pioneer in incorporating women into its workforce and currently, women represent more than 53% of Correos professionals and occupy 55% of intermediate management positions in offices, distribution units and logistics centres. The history of Correos is marked by milestones of integration and equality. Telégrafos was one of the first services, at the end of the 19th century, to incorporate women into its staff. One of the tribute stamps is devoted to Clara Campoamor, a Correos’ telegraphist, politician and defender of women rights who fought for women’s suffrage in Spain.

The Extraordinary WiIliam Fraser Collection Phoenix Auctions is proud to announce the Auctioning of the William Fraser Collection in early September in Auction #105. William Fraser (Bill to his friends) was born in 1882 and died in 1958. He was a photographer and cabinet maker and lived his entire life in Hamilton, NSW. He was a long-time member of the Newcastle Philatelic Society and was president several times. This part of his collection has been passed down through the family largely intact and is now being offered to collectors for the first time. The stunning part of this collection was formed in the early 1930s and has never been on the market. It features an amazing number of record-size blocks of Specimens & CTOs, including type C Specimen blocks of 12 of 3rd Wmk £1 grey (only a block of 8 & a block of 4 previously recorded) & £2 (only a block of 8 & 4 blocks of 4 previously recorded) and Sm Multi Wmk 10/- (only a block of 4 & a strip of 3 previously recorded).
The CTO blocks are just as outstanding with 6d to 5/- and perf ‘OS’ 6d to 10/- Roo blocks of 12 and KGV ½d to 1/4d both normal and ‘OS’ in blocks of 12. The early commemorative stamps are also represented in blocks of 12 or larger some with imprints and plate numbers. Perhaps the most notable items in this last group are the 2d & 3d Kingsford Smith ‘OS’ plate 8 block of 12 and imprint block of 12 respectively. While there are no record block sizes recorded for the CTO stamps we believe most of William’s collection will be the largest known CTO blocks. There is no direct evidence to indicate where William acquired these blocks and the initial assumption is that they would have come from Miller Bros in Melbourne. However amongst his collection have been a number of 1933 registered letters from the Records Section of the PMG all addressed to William. These envelopes, plus family recollections that William had a friend in the PMG, lead us to believe that William was able to place special orders with the PMG to get these large custom blocks. We know that William sold stamps to dealers such as Alfred Campe in Sydney and we also know at one stage he had 7 CTO sheets of the ½d orange overprinted ‘OS’ and therefore we have come to the conclusion that William Fraser is likely to have been the source of some of these previously recorded large blocks, rather than Miller Bros being the sole source of Specimen & CTO blocks.
United Kingdom 1988 “Whitby salutes Australia’s Bicentenary”
Three Ammonites are depicted on the postmark “Whitby salutes Australia’s Bicentenary”, dated 26th of January 1988. January 26th is Australia Day, the official National Day of Australia. Observed annually on 26 January, it marks the 1788 landing of the First Fleet and raising of the Union Flag by Arthur Phillip at Sydney Cove in New South Wales. The ammonites, most likely, are Hildoceras bifrons - one of the most common ammonite species present at Whitby. Two other very common ammonite species of Yorkshire country (Northern England) are: Hildoceras bifrons and Hildoceras semipolitum. Hildoceras is a genus of small ammonite from the Jurassic Period in the family Hildoceratidae, with diameter between 40mm and 170mm. The shells are characterized by a narrow discoidal evolute shape, keeled venter, concave ribs along the outer flanks, and a shallow spiral groove running along smooth inner flanks. Whorls slightly overlap, cross sections are compressed. The ventral keel is bordered on either side by a shallow groove. Whitby (from “white settlement” in Old Norse) is a seaside town, port and civil parish in North Yorkshire, England with a population of about fourteen thousand people. 16 - Stamp News
The earliest record of a permanent settlement is in 656 AD, when as Streanaeshealh it was the place where Oswy, the Christian king of Northumbria, founded the first abbey, under the abbess Hilda. The Synod of Whitby was held there in 664 AD. In 867 AD, Viking raiders destroyed the monastery. In the following centuries Whitby functioned as a fishing settlement until, in the 18th century, it developed as a port and centre for shipbuilding and whaling, the trade in locally mined alum, and the manufacture of Whitby jet jewelry. The Whitby’s port was where Captain James Cook learned seamanship and, coincidentally, where his first vessel to explore the southern ocean, HMS Endeavour was built. Captain James Cook FRS (1728 – 1779) was

a British explorer, cartographer and naval officer famous for his three voyages between 1768 and 1779 in the Pacific Ocean and to New Zealand and Australia in particular. He made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. The town lies on the northern part of a coastline, locally described as the “Fossil Coast”. The “Fossil Coast” is 56 km long and stretches from Staithes (Northwest of Whitby) and Flamborough (Southeast of Whitby). The rock strata contain various fossils or prehistoric marine animals, including Ichthyosaurs, Plesiosaurs and crocodiles discovered since the middle of 18th century, and even some dinosaur footprints. The fossils of Whitby can be seen in the Whitby Museum and in the Rotunda Museum in Scarborough which has a comprehensive collection of fossils from the area. Smaller fossils include numerous species of ammonites, or “snake stones” (sometimes written in
one word: snakestones) can be found in large quantities at the shoreline near the town. The town’s “snake stones” folklore has it that fossils were once living serpents that were common in the area. These stories attribute to the 7th century AD, Anglo-Saxon Abbess Saint Hilda of Whitby (614-680) with ridding the region of snakes by turning them to stone. Legend has it that Hilda was required to found an

abbey on the cliffs above Whitby. Finding the site to be infested by snakes, she prayed to the Lord and the snakes coiled up and were turned to stone. She picked them up and threw them over the cliff, and that is why there are so many ammonite fossils in the rocks below the abbey. In early Christian times, snakes had a bad reputation and were associated with the Devil, so it was important to clear the area before a sacred building could be established. According to legend, Saint
Hilda cast a spell that turned the snakes of Whitby to stone and threw them from the cliff tops. says Dr. Paul Taylor from Natural History Museum in London. St. Hilda’s miraculous work was immortalised in the poem Marmion, by Sir Walter Scott: When Whitby’s nuns exalting told, Of thousand snakes, each one Was changed into a coil of stone, When Holy Hilda pray’d: Themselves, without their holy ground, Their stony folds had often found. This legend was immortalised by Alpheus Hyatt in 1876 by naming the ammonite genus in honour of Saint Hilda: Hildoceras. Local collectors and dealers in fossils often carved heads on ammonites to increase curiosity value and improve sales. These “snake stones” became the symbol of Whitby and started to appear on the coat of arms and other symbols associated with the town in the sixteenth or seventeenth century. L-R : Coat of Arms of Whitby, Coat of Arms Rugby club of Whitby, St. Hilda monument in Whitby In 1667, three coiled “snake stones” with heads, as they were shown on the Arms of Whitby Abbey, appeared on a “HIS HALF PENNY” copper token of local merchant Henry Sneaton. From the middle of the 17th to the early 19th century, England suffered from a chronic shortage of small change. The British government failed to mint enough small change coins for commerce, creating hardship, especially for the urban poor. This forced local merchants and municipalities to produce their own tokens for daily commerce. Merchants and municipalities issued farthings, halfpence and penny tokens mostly made of copper or brass and often featuring designs related to the issuer, such as a coat of arms or a symbol of their trade. Although most examples were round, some were octagonal, square or even heart shaped. As long as merchants accepted the tokens for purchases at face value, the public would accept them in change. Later in 1811, images of the “snake stones” were replaced by images of Ammonite fossils, as can be seen on the token of Whitby Association. Since 1935, the Whitby Coat of Arms has incorporated three snakestones due to this folklore. The rugby club of Whitby have the ammonites on its coat of arms and Whitby Town Football Club have the ammonite design on its crest.

Postal Stationery Welcome to the postal stationery column for August 2024. This month’s column looks at Australian new issues, another instalment of the Handbook of New South Wales Postal Stationery, auction realisations for Malcolm Groom’s embossed postal stationery of Tasmania and forthcoming exhibitions. Sky Country: The Seven Sisters Postal Cards Three postal cards (Figure 1) depicting the story of the Seven Sisters were issued on 4 June 2024 and sold as a set for $6.75. The cards depict the story and perspectives of women from three lands: Martu Country in the Great Sandy Desert (May Chapman), Ngaanyatjara Lands in the Great Victoria Desert (Angilyiya Mitchell) and the Anungu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in the north-west of South Australia (Nyunmiti Burton). There is some variation in this story based on country but all tell of Seven Sisters who flee a lustful, shape-shifting man, Yurla/Wati Nyiru. Chapman’s Janawa depicts a place in the Martu Country, where the frightened sisters (Minyipu-
ru) first fled the pursuing Yurla. Nyunmiti Burton’s work tells how the oldest sister protected the others, making sure no one was left behind. The painting by Angilyiya Mitchell describes how the sisters escaped Wati Nyiru’s relentless pursuit by flying up to become stars. The Seven Sisters (Pleiades) can be seen chased every night across the constellation sky by Wati Nyiru (Orion). Designed by Sharon Rodziewicz, Australia Post Design Studio. Path to Paris: Paris 2024 Summer Olympics Postal Card A postal card (Figure 2) was issued on 24 June 2024 to mark Australia’s participation in the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad that were held in Paris, France from 26 July to 11 August 2024. The card was sold for $2.85 and designed by Tim Hancock, Backpack. Above : Figure 1 Postal card showing May Chapman’s Janawa Left : Figure 2 Postal Card for the Paris Olympics 20 - Stamp News

Malcolm Groom’s Tasmanian Embossed Postal Stationery; Abacus Auction 21-24 May 2024 Public Auction 256 The Abacus Auction of 21-24 May 2024 included the collection of Tasmanian embossed postal stationery of Malcolm Groom RDP FAP. Malcolm’s exhibit won a Large Gold medal at London 2022 as well as many other awards and he gave a presentation on the subject to the Postal Stationery Society of Australia (PSSA) which can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhIFRoN1-vk . Tasmanian embossed postal stationery included regular stamped envelopes sold over post office counters as well as stamped to order postcards, wrappers, envelopes and lettersheets. Two proofs of dies intended for use on the regular issue envelope were included in the Auction: 1883 Embossed Essay original hand-painted stamp-size artwork for the oval ‹TASMANIA POSTAGE/ TWO PENCE› in green (Figure 6). Sold for $1,900; 1883 Embossed Die Proof 2d in scarlet on thin white card (28x32mm) mounted on another piece (Figure 7). Sold for $750. The real highlights though were to be found in the spectacular items of STO postal stationery. For example, the Crosby, William & Co 1d+1d carmine three-panel postal card (Figure 8) described Stamp News - 21
Postal Stationery in the auction catalogue with allover chromolitho full-colour advertising for The Chemical Union Ltd, Fisons’ Sheep Dipping Powder and Fisons’ Chemical Fertilizers, illustrations of the British Coat of Arms & Medals on two panels and an enormous flock of sheep on the third, the inside (reverse of each panel) with further advertising for Fisons’ Poisonous Sheep Dipping Powder with details of use and agent’s handstamp ‘William Crosby & Co/Hobart’ at base with a further 1d value impression, remarkably with no space for an address, the panels separated, a couple of bends, small closed tears and minor loss of the gold embossing at edges. The Abacus description continues: In our opinion this is the most spectacular item of postal stationery from Australia and perhaps of the entire British Empire. It is also, without doubt, the most extravagant postal advertising item from Australia. Sold for $1,500. Another highlight of the STO postcards was a set of 12 1d rose-pink scenic cards (Figure 9) each with ‘J WALCH & SONS Hobart’ imprint in red on the view-side (unrecorded used), with views on the reverse. Sold for $3,000. Other attractive STO items were to be found amongst the STO lettersheets which included a selection of ‘True Shot’ lettersheets with printed advertisements inside. An example was the 1d pale red/ white lettersheet (Figure 10) with all segments except the address & back panels occupied by 42 different boxed advertisements for an array of products including Cascade Beer, Nicholls Malt Ales, Liberty Sharebrokers, Lion Tea, 5 O’Clock Tea, Criterion Hotel, Chemist, Goldsmiths, Photographers, Clothing, Fruit and Wool Brokers Sold for $1,500. To see the full array of STO items see the Abacus Auction Catalogue for the sale which is available on their website and which represents an important record of these items. ing to emboss on an item of stationery. Up to five stamp impressions are known, for example, the ½d+½d+½d+½d+½d all in orange (Figure 11) to England ($ 575). Basset Hull wrote in the London Philatelist in 1895 that: When I visited Tasmania in early 1895, I saw a parcel of current l d post cards with an additional ½ d stamp embossed thereon. These were made to the order of a continental firm, and were about to be posted separately, so as to be duly used. I was informed that anything could be had in the way of impressed things, from a post card to a bandbox, as long as they were paid for. Revenue was
wanted and no reasonable request was refused. Only the line was now drawn at irregular varieties in colour, the ½ d die would only be used in yellow, the 1d in carmine and the 2d in green, and no Platypus fiscals would be embossed on matter for transmission by post. A fearsome array of varieties has been made by philatelic ingenuity, in collusion with official complaisance, as witness the envelopes in ½ d orange, l d green, l d carmine and 2d green, in every possible combination as to position and colour. For those interested in Tasmanian postal stationery, the recently published book, Tasmanian Embossed Stationery - 1883 To 1912 by Malcolm Groom and Allen Shatten aims to present all that is currently known about Tasmanian postal stationery. It covers the period up to (and sometimes beyond) the transfer of powers to the Commonwealth in 1912. The authors have half a lifetime of experience between them of collecting, researching and exhibiting Tasmanian Postal Stationery. The book contains commentaries and listings for post cards, envelopes issued by the post office, registered envelopes, stamped to order stationery, reply cards, letter cards and wrappers. Each section commences with a history of the category. As well as the stationery items themselves, the book presents essays and proofs, specimen overprints and official punctures, printing details where known, earliest and latest dates of use and assessments of rarity. The book is profusely illustrated. The authors have attempted to settle some points of contention, differing in some cases from previous publications. Post Office reports to Parliament have been applied to estimate usage over thirty years, which is presented along with other evidence to support new conclusions. The wrappers and stamped to order sections include comprehensive comments and images of the Stamp News - 23

Canada Post Community Foundation Postal Card Canada issued a ‘charity’ postal card on 29 April 2024 (Figures 12 and 13). The purchase price included a 10c surcharge to be paid to the Canada Post Community Foundation: Through the Canada Post Community Foundation annual semi-postal fundraising issue, you can rise up to support and encourage young people. Your donation of 10 cents for every postage-paid postcard goes directly to the Foundation to fund local and national non-profit groups that assist Canadian children and youth. Together, we can help their dreams take flight. The postcard was designed and illustrated by Seung Jai Paek: It depicts a diverse group of animals flying in a hot air balloon – a reminder of the ways we can uplift, inspire and support young people to soar as high as they can imagine and the ways we can fuel their dreams to take flight. The card was sold for $3.02 (the usual price $2.92 plus 10c donation) with 7,500 cards produced. The Battle of Finschhafen was part of the Huon Peninsula campaign during World War II and was fought between Australian and Japanese forces. The fighting took place between 22 September and 24 October 1943 following the landing at Scarlet Beach, which was followed by a two-pronged advance on Finschhafen as the Australian 20th Infantry Brigade advanced on the town from the north, while the 22nd Infantry Battalion drove from the south, having advanced from the landing beaches east of Lae. After the capture of Finschhafen, the Japanese forces in the area withdrew towards Sattelberg where they sought to hold the Australians before launching a counteroffensive, which subsequently threatened the landing beach. This attack was repelled by American and Australian forces, with heavy casualties being inflicted on the Japanese. In the aftermath, the Australians went on the offensive, capturing Sattelberg, and then advancing towards the Wareo plateau. Queensland 1860 6d Green, Perkins Bacon London print. Imperforate, Large Star Watermark, at $1,500 *UNDER* SG! -
MOST attractive used, with unusually light ‘sunburst’ rays sharp metal cancel, that as usual has lightly ‘pricked’ the wafer thin paper, leaving truly microscopic pinholes, mentioned for strict accuracy. Clean and fresh and flat, NO old hinges or remains, and with no usual aging or foxing, and deep bright colour as can be seen. Razor sharp plate impression from these London prints. AND I guarantee it is SG #3! 99% on ebay are simply the common later 6d perforated SMALL Star Wmk, with scissor cut off perfs! Value NIL. But the Clueless Bunnies still gleefully BUY them as ‘SG #3’. The impressions were set very close together on the printing plate, and good margins on these are most unusual. From RH margin of the sheet, with 3 massive margins - and a large chunk of adjoining stamp at left! Top copies are getting 4 figures these days. Superb eye-appeal as you can see. SG #3, £950 = $A1,900. SG Cat $1,900 - $1,500 UNDER cat $US260 at $A400 - Stock 572LQ
FIJI 1935 KGV Silver Jubilee 1/- Slate and Purple, major variety *MUH* ‘Frame Printed Double, One ALBINO’ - Cat $A3,200++ for $A1,250 -
A major, and seldom offered variety. The albino overprint is clearly visible in lower and left margins, fresh *MUH* - NEVER seen thus! SG #245a, Cat £1,600=$A3,200 as HINGED. For MUH you can add 100%+ for *anything* MUH, so a $6,500 type rarity in the real world. Clear RPSL Photo Certificate (1994) - ‘SG 245a, Frame Printed Double, One ALBINO - is Genuine’. These errors are readily spotted when in your hands, but are of course very hard to show on scans, so a clear Certificate is 105% ESSENTIAL on them. Attractive and very well centred, and with good perfs as you can see - at $1,800 *under* the HINGED SG cat price! Just $US925 at $A1,400 - Stock 692KA
Hoard of modern Australia peel and stick flat booklets face $340 - for just $A250! - Juicy and unusual lot from Estate. Wide range of designs and subjects and topicals as can be seen. SG cat is high on these of course probably $1,000 or so. So an ebay seller would do well offering these. HEAPS of images here - tinyurl.com/Oz-Bklt - Owner had wisely bought and kept these FLAT - most booklets are folded over into 3 sections. All are peel and stick, so fast and easy to use - indeed for anyone sending large letters ($7.50) or small parcels etc, you can glue one down, clear tape it on, or do as I’d do, have them cancelled, then placed in a cheap clear face 6’’ x 4” cello, so they stay protected and flat! Mostly 60c and 70c booklets of 10, but noted a few very recent $1.20s! FACE alone is $340 - out they go at just $A250 - save nearly $100 over his PO cost. Postage lots are NEVER seen under face, in modern peel and stick postage lots are generally 40 year old gummed issues, that by now often have little or no adhesion when licked, and are of weird and useless low values like 18c, 22c, 24c, 27c, 33c, 36c, 37c, and 41c etc, and are near impossible to use up. These will sell FAST at $A250 - Stock 654HG

The Invincibles 100 Years : NZ Post One hundred years ago in July 1924, New Zealand’s national rugby team sailed for England to begin a tour of the United Kingdom, France, and Canada. The All Blacks went on to win every match, earning the moniker ‘Invincibles’. The All Blacks of 1924 had been chosen after a series of seven trial games watched by seven selectors. After a six week voyage the team arrived in Plymouth, England, where they had a little over a week to regain form and fitness. Despite initial doubt from commentators and injuries and illness playing their part, the team appeared almost indestructible. Thousands packed the wharfs of Wellington harbour to welcome the ‘Invincibles’ home, and official celebrations were hosted by the Wellington City Mayor and at parliament - a fitting end to a grand
tour. Date of issue: 7 August 2024 Team image: commons.wikimedia.org Paleophilatelie.eu is the most comprehensive resource about Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Philately, the place where Paleontology and Paleoanthropology meets Philately.

Greetings from Great Britain If there is a theme on a theme this has to be it, doesn’t it? Commemorative stamps on commemorative stamps. Well that is how I see it and perhaps you will also see it that way after seeing the few covers I am going to show in this short article. I thought of this topic when I saw the recent “100 Years of Commemorative stamps” issue from the Royal Mail. Ten stamps in the set featuring images from previous issues from the past 100 years of UK Philately. The first Great Britain commemorative issue was the 1924 British Empire Exhibition issue. One stamp from this 2 stamp issue is on a 1st Class stamp along with an image of the 1949 Postal Union £1 stamp, a classic for all GB collectors, and one of the 1935 Silver Jubilee stamps. Figure 1

The other 9 stamps, all 1st class values, feature images from other well known issues from the past 100 years, which were in their own right issued to commemorate Great Britain’s culture, nature and wildlife, heritage, anniversaries and accomplishments in many walks of life. Fig 1 shows a First Day Cover of the 10 stamps and Fig 2 the reverse of the cover. One aspect I found very professional and interesting about this issue was the detail provided both on the cover and also included in the Presentation pack issue of the stamps. I know all presentation packs have very good information inserts but this one seems particularly good in my mind. Is there one stamp that stands out in my, mind? Yes, the one I just described above. Each stamp was in my opinion a classic is terms of design, image content and use of colour. Mentioning “classic”, perhaps it is worth

noting this has not really been the first commemorative issue to commemorate stamps. There were three others that come to mind, and they were in miniature sheets issues. Looking back in time, the most recent was in 2019 with the Stamp Classics
issue of 6 stamps in the miniature sheet, Fig 3 Look carefully and you will see there is the image of the ½d value from the 1940 Centenary

Greetings from Great Britain Figures 4 & 5
Fig 5 is one more miniature sheet, again showing the Penny Black along with the 20p value from the 150th Anniversary of the Penny Black issue. This miniature sheet was of course issued to commemorate the Stamp World London ’90 International Stamp Exhibition . The question I have for you is, do you have these miniature sheets in your GB collection? Very collectible in my thinking and maybe not so easy to come across in very fine used condition. Enjoy your philately. of the First Postage stamp issue. The 2d orange value appears on the second stamp in the 2024 100 years commemorative issue. Moving back a few more years to 2015 another miniature sheet shows the Penny Black and Two Penny blue stamps on the 175th Anniversary of the Penny Black issue. And finally, if we go back to 1990 here in 48 - Stamp News

THE STAMPS OF BAHRAIN Located in the Persian Gulf, the Kingdom of Bahrain is seldom in the news. The country comprises a number of islands and currently has a population of some 1.5 million (including a very large expatriate community). Manama is the capital city of this state which started out as an emirate but was proclaimed a kingdom in 2002. Way back in the 16th century, the islands were controlled by the Portuguese but they were later included in the Arab, Persian and Ottoman empires. In 1783 the Al Khalifa dynasty was established in Bahrain and in 1867 the emirate was made a British protectorate. Bahrain achieved full independence in 1971. The British established a post office in Bahrain in 1884 using Indian postage stamps. The Indian rupee served as the country’s currency until 1966 when the Bahrain dinar was introduced. In 1933 specific stamps for Bahrain went on sale.
Figure 1
50 - Stamp News
The first four sets were Indian definitive sets overprinted BAHRAIN. In 1948 the Indian stamps were replaced by British stamps overprinted BAHRAIN and surcharged with new denominations in annas and rupees. Shown nearby is a stamp from the 19521954 set featuring the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II (Fig. 1). It must have been a rather curious situation with a British monarch being depicted on all postage stamp issues of an Arab emirate. To somewhat remedy the situation a 1½ anna stamp featuring the head of Sheik Salman bin Hamed Al Khalifa was issued in 1953. It was followed by two additional values in 1956. These stamps were only intended for local mail items. In 1957 the currency was changed with one rupee being divided into 100 naye paise. The local stamps of 1953-1956 were reissued but with new values (Fig. 2). The German Michel catalogue indicates that
Figure 2
Christer Brunström only 3,000 sets were printed which should indicate that with time this must become a very rare set provided that the information is correct. However, when I checked a major Internet auction site I noted numerous offers of this particular set in mint condition and at varying prices which suggests that there is ample supply. Very possibly the stamps saw limited use and most were sold off to the trade. In 1961 there was another set of six values in a slightly different design which were also only valid for local mail. I don’t really know if scouting is popular in Bahrain but in 1957 there was a British set of three stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the scouting movement. The set was also overprinted for use in Bahrain (Fig. 3). At the time Bahrain had an estimated population of some 125,000 but the scout issue had a total printing of 158,000 sets which must
Figure 3
have been far in excess of postal needs. I suppose these stamps were mainly intended to be marketed to worldwide collectors of the scouting topic. It is still a most inexpensive set. In 1960 everything changed with the release of new set of 11 stamps featuring a portrait of the sheik. As explained earlier there was a 1961 issue of stamps for local mail. Recently I acquired a small lot of Bahraini postage stamps which I found most interesting and which prompted me to write this story. The lot included the 1966 definitive set which has three highly interesting designs which tell us a lot about the history and traditions of the State of Bahrain. The 100 fils value (Fig. 4) depicts pearl divers at work. For thousands of years Bahrain was famous for its pearls and they were the country’s main export from about 1850 until it all came to an end in 1932
Figure 4
Stamp News - 51
THE STAMPS OF BAHRAIN with the discovery of oil. Thousands of divers were occupied in the pearl business but, when it collapsed in the 1930s, they found new occupations in the oil industry. The pearls were mainly found at the northern end of the main island where there are three large oyster beds in the sea. When the pearl industry declined as it did much of the local infrastructure including many buildings were abandoned. Today much has been restored and the Bahrain Pearling Path was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2012. Visitors to Bahrain can find out much about all this activity at the Pearl Diving Museum. People in Bahrain enjoy hunting using falcons and falconry was the subject of the 200 fils stamp (Fig. 5). Falconry is certainly part of Bahraini culture. It used to be an occupation for the rich but today training and using falcons for hunting has become a favourite pastime for many in the country. The falcon is very much part of the Bahraini identity and it serves as a symbol for the country. Today much is being done to preserve the birds’ habitat. There are even falconry schools where students
can learn all they need to know to raise the birds and then use them for hunting. In 1980 there was set of eight stamps devoted to falcons and falconry. Qahwah or coffee is the subject of the 500 fils value (Fig. 6). It is one of the most popular beverages in Bahrain and it is frequently prepared with cardamom and sugar or served plain. The stamp shows a dallah, the traditional coffee pot. Coffee is usually served in rather small cups. There are numerous coffee shops in Manama. The emir’s (now the king’s) palace is shown in the background. The oil industry is still important in the economy of Bahrain but today the banking sector and tourism contribute quite a lot to the kingdom’s finances. Most Bahrainis are Shiites but the ruling class is Sunni. In 2011 there was a popular uprising in the country which led to an armed intervention by forces from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Bahrain is the third smallest country in Asia. I have been unable to ascertain why the emir needed to elevate himself to king but I suppose he had his reasons.
