Thinking Outside The Xbox

Beach Blues

patrick jones This week’s Standard Stag celebrates nautical design, which has always had a special place in my heart. It’s a bit late for a nautical feature, sure, but early fall is the time I always associated with going to the beach anyway. As early as May, Texas beaches are totally swamped with tourists and the college break crowd, but by August they’re all partied out or have to go back to work or school, leaving the beach a much more pleasant and fun environ-

ment. Hopefully, this week’s post will evoke the best feelings of the beach— PB&Js and soda after swimming in the ocean, ironic long walks by the shore, and fishing with dad—without any of the more unsavory memories—drunk frat boys, seagull poop, and the unparalleled discomfort of sand-in-yournether-regions. Besides, we’re in Texas: it’s not getting cooler until October at the earliest, so get out and enjoy the beach while it’s “out of season.”

5 4 1. Elephants Love Water Textile Print, from Umbrella Prints - For me, beaches and oceans are nostalgic environments that recall childhood trips to the Texas, Alabama, and South Carolina coasts. The faded color choices and simplistic, storybook illustrations make this textile beautiful, pure, and evocative. 2. Happy Crab Napkin from wabisabi green- True story: one time I was fishing off a pier and caught a crab with a fishing pole. Ever since then, I’ve been obsessed with them. Luckily, you can enjoy the cuteness without the viciousness with this napkin. 3. Another Adventure Print by Rebecca Peragine from One Kings Lane - Graphic typography is all the rage now, and as much as I want to dump on a popular trend...it’s pretty cool stuff. Who doesn’t like a stunning typeface every now and then? As a landlocked Texan, the coast always bespeaks adventure and travel, so this print is an accurate summation of how I feel right now. 4. Ultra Conditioning Lip Balm by Burt’s Bees from Amazon - Guess what I forget every time I go to the beach. Or outside in general. 5. Farm Rucksack by MAKR from steven alan - This rucksack is made out of USsourced material with an ultra-sleek style. It’s simple, easy and uncluttered: perfect for a getaway to the coast or even heavy-duty usage. And that deep, almost impenetrable navy color is just awe-inducing.
