Thinking Outside The Xbox

Live From Brooklyn

patrick jones

Everyone knows that Brooklyn is a hotspot for modern urban artistry right up with Portland, San Francisco, and our beloved Austin. During my trip to Brooklyn, I explored five different design stores, and what I found were amazing people doing fascinating things. Armed with only my iPhone camera, Standard Stag infiltrated these hotspots of design and found the goods...and the trendsetting stores that keep Brooklyn at the forefront of American design.

1. Golden Calf - The one-woman project of Natalie Vichnevsky, began as a “Chinese comfort furniture” store almost a decade ago. After a few location and conceptual changes, Golden Calf currently exists as a vintage decor store, with an emphasis on vintage Scandinavian design. All things considered though, Vichnevsky still refers to her collection as “schizophrenic,” and there’s a little something for everyone in it...as long as you have good taste. 2. Sprout Home - Based in Chicago and Brooklyn, it is easily one of the premier floral and garden design stores in America. Their colorful pots, handblown terrariums, and sheer number of beautiful plants make this a must-visit for your trip to Brooklyn.

3. Cosmo - What would a New York City design column be without the influence of the hit television series “Mad Men” ? The perfectly christened Cosmo is an entirely Mid Century Modern and Early Industrial design store that apes America’s hunger for the 1960s minimalism. 4. Moon River Chattel - Ahhhh, France. Leave it to them for the ultimate in refinement, from confit de canard to the perfect country home. The store is, obviously, beyond Francophilic, from their vintage set of “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” to their homey, airy setup, replete with gorgeous wooden farmhouse furniture. 5. Scosha - Australian owner and designer Scosha Woolridge’s workshop for Brooklyn artisans, Scosha specializes in jewelry and textiles, along with the requisite vintage clothing.
