Thinking Outside The Xbox
Enlightened Space

The odds are that the brief lifespan of incandescent lightbulbs has probably affected and annoyed you at some point. This year marks the beginning of stricter rules for incandescent bulb efficiency, but in a matter of years those same bulbs may be a thing of the past, phased out by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Light
emitting diodes, or LEDs, have been around for decades, but their energy efficiency and power make them the smartest choice when incandescents are completely phased out. With their long lifespans, LEDs make up for their initial high cost. This week’s Standard Stag explores a few LED options in bulbs and fixtures.

1. Candelabra LED bulb by TOSHIBA - I’m a big fan of lamps for bringing softer lighting throughout a room— LED lights subvert that need and give overhead lighting the softness of a lamp through their adjustable brightness. 2. SWITCH bulb by SWITCH SWITCH promises to change the lightbulb forever with a conversion-free LED bulb. Their A-Series bulbs last from three to five years depending on usage, and feature a thermal cooling system to ensure the bulbs don’t overheat. Compared to some LED bulbs, SWITCH bulbs are elegant, almost steampunk in their retrofuturistic (oh yeah, I went there) sleekness. 3. Bau Pendant Light by Normann Copenhagen & Vibeke Fonnesberg Schmidt from A+R - I think this fixture would be a perfect fit for a children’s bedroom or game room, due to its simplicity. Starting kids off young with good design will no doubt send them down the right path for the rest of their lives, right? 4. Page by Page Wall Lamp by TUNAPAPER - This wall-mounted fixture mimics a calendar and features several custom designs on each flippable page. This collision of graphic design and lighting shows the inseparable relationship between good lighting and good design.
