Movie Madness

patrick Jones I was a little late to the party on mouthfrothingly popular Ryan Gosling’s second sort-of-breakout film “Drive”: I didn’t watch it until last week. Whoops. One of my absolute favorite details in the film was director Nicolas Winding Refn’s expressive, all-pervasive, and beautiful usage of yellow-orange and blue in lighting and scene composition. Besides accenting Gosling’s nat-
ural blonde and blue-eyed features, the use of these gorgeous colors add beauty to a stark and brutally violent film. I decided to explore those contrasting colors, as well as highlight some of the homey and smart design choices that contributed to a film full of well-designed scenes.

1. Nixon Sofa by THRIVE Home Furnishings - A big blue couch or love seat is featured prominently in the interiors of “Drive,” which I couldn’t stop noticing. I found this couch based off of my memory of the film. 2. Orange LED Bulb from Capital Lighting - If “Drive” convinced me of anything, it’s that yellow-orange lighting is underrated. Well, tasteful orange lighting. Make sure to go for a LED light for a longer lasting light source. 3. Gem Crayons by KID MADE MODERN - These are just too cool to not feature. Crayons should have been the last thing I associated with a film where a guy’s head gets stomped in, and yet... 4. Desk Lamp from Lumen Lighting+Living by KONCEPT - This desk lamp is a bit modern in design, which is precisely why I like it. 5. Brush Stroke Textile Design by RADICA TEXTILES - These textiles may not be exact fits to those in the film, but they’re so gorgeous that I had to feature them. Designed and hand-painted in Baltimore, Radica makes wonderfully expressive textiles. I chose this pattern for its white space to break up the amount of blue I’ve selected so far.
