Thinking Outside The Xbox
Pop Art Reverence

Art history is awesome. As a visual/ spatial person, I love the big picture (art’s historical importance) and little picture (minute details, personal touches and stories) that comes with learning about, well, pictures. But everyone has periods they favor over others, and I’ve always been attracted towards, you guessed it, modern and
postmodern strains of art. As someone who grew up on cartoons and comics, pop art came easily to me. For this week’s “Thinking Outside the Xbox,” I tasked myself with designing based around pop art - bright colors, exciting details, and popular iconography.

1. “Flora #2” Work of Art by Christina Muraczewski from 20x200 - Let’s be real: as much as I’d like to own a Chiho Aoshima print, let alone a mere reproduction of a Warhol, it’s simply not possible at this point. 20x200 is a great way to purchase affordable art that’s way more interesting than your average frame-filler from a big box store. 2. Electro Pop Chair by David Rasmussen Design - In keeping with the off-kilter theme of the Muraczewski’s piece, I chose to accent the smallest detail of the blue hummingbird in her painting with this chair. It’s a timeless and common design with a bold new color scheme, something I can really get down with. 3. Katamari Prince T-shirt by katamari from Spreadshirt - I try not to post too many video game things, but the ultra-bizarre Katamari series is too good to pass up, especially as it was the first time I’d ever heard about pop art in a context that had nothing to do with fine arts. 4. Steps Bookcase from chiasso - We’ve already explored my love of/need for bookshelves. The staggered shelves provide lots of room, and a cool design that I’m not afraid to admit reminds me of those little climbable vines in Mario.
