A Christmas Carol Special Edition from Standard Publishing timed with release of new Disney movie CINCINNATI — May 12, 2009 — Standard Publishing announced today it will publish a new edition of Charles Dickens’ beloved tale of Ebenezer Scrooge. A Christmas Carol Special Edition (September 2009) will be available for families and churches this Christmas, just in time for the nationwide release of Disney’s A Christmas Carol, a new, 3-D animated film version of the story that will star Jim Carrey and be directed by Robert Zemeckis. In anticipation of Disney introducing the classic story to a new generation, A Christmas Carol Special Edition will help families explore the rich, true-Christmas meaning in Dickens’ words. The new annotated version will include the complete text of the book with Christian insights and discussion questions for groups and families provided by author Stephen Skelton. In Disney’s A Christmas Carol, Carrey will play Scrooge as well as the three spirits of Christmas that visit him. Academy Award®-winning director Robert Zemeckis, who directed The Polar Express (2004), is expected to bring a “multisensory thrill ride…in a groundbreaking 3-D motion picture event,” according to a news release issued by Walt Disney Pictures.
Disney’s A Christmas Carol will preview May 18 at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, in Cannes, France. Author Skelton will explore the themes of regret, repentance, and redemption in his study that offers opportunities for intergenerational and family discussion. Skelton’s previous work includes producing a best-selling video-based Bible study series that includes The Mayberry Bible Study and The Beverly Hillbillies Bible Study.
