Manners Always Matter Manners are a vital part of reflecting Christ to others. As we follow the rules of politeness for our culture and exhibit kind, thoughtful, unselfish behavior, we show people the genuine, sensitive love God has for them.

Manners are learned behaviors.

We don’t emerge from the womb with the knowledge of good manners and etiquette (rats!). But we aren’t born with bad manners, either. Accepted and gracious patterns of behavior must be learned. Our children need to watch those who model manners to learn how to behave with courtesy and caring. Our responsibility is to provide the best examples of “how Jesus would do it.”

Children who grow up without

training in manners and etiquette often feel uncomfortable in social settings and less confident in dealing with others. This way of life is based on Christ’s clear teaching: We’re to think of others ahead of ourselves, not putting ourselves down, but confidently and graciously lifting others up and seeing everyone as valuable in God’s sight.

our children and to empower them to change the world around them, we must accept the responsibility to train them in communicating confidently and in ways that reflect Jesus. A foundational knowledge of manners will enhance effectiveness in every facet of our children’s lives—spiritually, morally, emotionally, physically, and relationally.

The discipline of manners may take a bit of time and effort at first, but it will pay off as unselfish communication and actions are adopted. Start with the basics of “please” and “thank you.” At home or in public, whether you are passing food or picking up toys, encourage family members to ask, not order, with patience and grace. As manners become ingrained, your whole family will feel more comfortable, valued, and appreciated!
