Lesson 1 glitter glue, scissors, and enough small strands of Christmas-tree lights to go around the edge of the display. (You may also need an extension cord!) Attach the background paper and Christmas-tree lights before class and cut a lightning bolt from poster board to use as a pattern. (Enlarge the pattern from page 123 as your sample.) Gather kids near the bulletin board. Ask them to tell how the blank display is like how the world must have been before God’s creation began. Then say: God began with nothing when he created the world and all that’s in it. We’re told in the Bible that the world was empty and without form. But through God’s plans, power, and love, he created an amazing world for us to live in and share! And when God planned for the world, he also planned to send us a heavenly Power Team. God’s Power Team consists of God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And we’ll also discover later how we’re a part of this awesome team and can put God’s power to use in our own lives. Today, each group will be making the items to go along with one part of the Power Team. Then we’ll put them all together on the display and see what happens. Assign each group a different member of the Power Team (God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and “You.”) Have each group trace and cut out a lightning bolt and wrap it in gold or silver foil. Then have each group make a name card for their Power Team member by cutting a 4-by-6-inch rectangle of poster board and writing the name with colorful markers in large letters. (The group with the Holy Spirit’s name might need to cut their rectangle a bit larger.) Glue over the letters with glitter glue to add sparkle and shine. As kids work, add glitter to precut bulletin-board letters to spell out the words: “OUR POWER TEAM!” Staple the letters in place to the top center of the display. When the kids have their pieces completed, staple them in place. (Note: The illustration shows how the bulletin board will look after you complete this book.) Then gather kids in front of the display. Say: Wow! Our bulletin board is really coming 16

Lesson 1 to life, isn’t it? Listen as I read a passage from the Bible that talks about God’s creation. Read aloud Genesis 1:1-4 and plug in the Christmas-tree lights after reading verse 3. Then say: Just as electricity gives a power boost to the lights on our display, God’s Power Team gives us a boost that empowers us to live lives of faith, courage, and obedience. That’s pretty awesome, isn’t it? God demonstrated his perfect power through creating the world, and throughout all time, God continues to reveal to us his power and wisdom. Read aloud Romans 1:20, then continue: God’s eternal power and his divine wisdom are shown through all creation. Let’s begin learning a Mighty Memory Verse that tells us about God’s power and wisdom.

SUPER SCRIPTURE Before class, draw the Scripture diagram in the margin on newsprint and attach it to a wall or door for kids to see. Write the words to the Power Boosters Song on newsprint and attach it to a wall for kids to read. Gather kids by the Scripture diagram and repeat Daniel 2:20 three times aloud as you point to the underlined words: “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his [God’s].” Then say: What a powerful verse! Daniel 2:20 tells us that even the name of God has eternal power and is to be praised and honored. Ask: ★ How does God’s perfect wisdom give him power? ★ Why are we to praise God for his wisdom and power? Say: Because of God’s perfect wisdom, power, and love, we want to praise him and tell others of his greatness. And isn’t it wonderful that through God’s wisdom and power we can lead stronger lives of faith and action? Let’s express our thanks and praise to God by learning a new song called the Power Boosters Song! Lead kids in singing the Power Boosters Song to the tune of “The Ants Go Marching One-by-One” while reading the words on the wall. Then lead kids in marching around the room as they sing the song again. POWER BOOSTERS SONG Oh, I am marching with a Power Team—hurrah! Their power and glory is bigger than anything—hurrah! 17

Lesson 1 The truth of God, the love of Jesus, The help of the Spirit that leads and frees us— Oh, I’ll have the vic-to-ry—don’t you see? I have power, here with me. Boom, boom, boom, boom! Boom, boom, boom . . . (repeat the song) After singing, say: We have power through God’s Power Team, and that makes me feel great! Let’s end our time together by reading from the book of Psalms. You can help in our interactive prayer as we offer thanks to God for his creative power.

A

POWERFUL PROMISE

Before this activity, cut two 3-by-12-inch strips of poster board. On one strip, write: “His love endures forever.” On the second strip, write: “God has ultimate power over creation.” You’ll be adding strips to the bulletin board display each week during the remainder of this book, so you may wish to cut twelve strips in all. Gather kids in a circle and say: We’ve been learning today that God has total power over all creation, including us. In other words, God has ultimate power over creation. Let’s add this important truth to our display beside the name of God. Staple the strip to the bulletin board beside the name of God. Say: We’ve discovered that God planned for creation and also planned to send us a Power Team to help, teach, guide, and love us. And we began learning a Mighty Memory Verse that says (lead kids in repeating Daniel 2:20) “Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his.” Hold up the strip with the words, “His love endures forever” written on it. Say: We’ll close by reading a responsive Scripture passage. I’ll read a verse, then pause as you say, “His love endures forever.” At the end, we’ll all say “amen.” Read aloud Psalm 136:1-12 and 26. Then close with a corporate “amen.” End with this responsive good-bye: Leader: May you always thank God for his power. Children: And also you! Distribute the Power Page! take-home papers as kids are leaving. Thank children for coming and encourage them to thank God for his awesome, powerful creation during the week. 18
