Bible Background for the Teacher Before God created a man and a woman, He prepared the earth so people would be able to live on it. God made the sky, land, water, sun, moon and stars, and animals. On the land God caused plants and trees to grow. These plants and trees were full of beautiful vegetables and fruits. All the plants and trees contained seeds so more plants and trees would be able to grow. The food God made is not only good to look at but also is good for us. Think of the health benefits of eating broccoli, apples, oranges, and cauliflower. The next time you eat an apple, thank God for it and for all the beautiful, life-giving food He gives us.

Based on Genesis 1:11-13, 29 The Bible Time story, “God Gives Us Food,” can be told in two ways: (1) Use the shorter stories printed within the weekly lessons, or (2) Tell the story in its entirety each week. The entire story is printed below. Bible Time can be done in a variety of ways. You can do Bible Time • with individual children. • with a few children at a time on carpet squares. • with children on chairs at a table. • with children in built-in seats in a table or clip-on chairs. • in your own creative way. Encourage verbal children to sing the songs with you. Ask other teachers and helpers to sing too! The song “Oh, I Love to Pat the Bible” is recorded on the CD. Floor Time Reach for the Food Place a piece of toy food close to a baby but just out of his reach. Point to the food and say: There is a banana. Can you reach for the banana, ___ ? (Use the baby’s name.) Encourage the baby to reach for and grab the banana. If he has trouble reaching it, you can push it closer to him. When he has the banana, say this rhyme: God made cereal and ___ (name of the food) too. God gives good food for me and you! (Point to self and then to the baby.) Use different toy food until the baby tires of the activity.

Hug and Hold Time God Made Food for You Hold a baby in your lap and help him turn the pages of a book. Heart to Heart Bread has been and continues to be a primary source of food for millions of people. Most of us enjoy many kinds of cereal and bread—sourdough bread, cheese biscuits, rye bread, and blueberry muffins, not to mention all of our favorite cereals. On a spiritual level, bread had special significance in the Bible. It appears repeatedly in special meals and in worship, from the Exodus and Passover to the last supper. Jesus called himself “the bread of life.” Remember to thank God for the physical bread He provides. But more importantly, thank God for the bread of life—Jesus.

Activities for the Unit Use these activities anytime during your session. Children will enjoy doing them each week. Poster: Before class, display the Unit 3 poster in your room. Grocery Store Before class, set up an area of the classroom like a little grocery store. Stock your store shelves with cereal boxes and bread wrappers. When children pick up an item, say its name and encourage verbal children to repeat the names. You’ve chosen some cereal! God gives us food. Scoop ‘n’ Pour Before class, tape the figures of the Bibles to the inside bottoms of two tubs. Fill one tub with cereal. Place both tubs on a tablecloth or large towels. Allow the children to use scoops, plastic measuring cups, and other small containers to scoop the cereal from the filled tub into the empty one. Ask, Can you point to the Bible? The Bible says that  God gives us cereal and bread. When they scoop all the cereal from the tub, they’ll discover another Bible. Clap and say, It’s a Bible! The Bible says that God gives us food. Invite verbal children to say the Bible Words. 1s will enjoy scooping cereal and point to the Bible. 2s will do the above and say the Bible Words.

Surprise Boxes Before class, prepare the boxes if you did not use them in Lesson 4. Press out the photos and glue one inside each box. Encourage children to open the boxes and look at the pictures. Ask, What do you see? Encourage verbal children to respond. It’s a bowl of cereal. Cereal is good.  God gives us cereal. Do you like cereal? 1s will open the boxes, look inside, and may name some food. 2s will do the above and respond to questions. For added fun, encourage children to look at the food hanging from the ceiling. While singing the song suggested in the Reach for the Food activity on page 74, encourage the children to stretch their hands toward the food. Or you can lift the children so they can touch the figures with their hands.

Toaster Pop-ups Show children a slice of bread and say, God gives us bread to eat. Then show children a toaster. Let’s make some toast. Demonstrate how to make toast. Show children how to push down the lever, count to three, and then pull the lever up. (You don’t need to plug it in.) Then say the rhyme and invite children to imitate your actions: Take a slice of bread, (stand up, arms straight up, palms touching) put it in the toaster. (squat down, hands at side) One, two, three, (count slowly) pop up, pop up, pop up! (jump up) Toast is ready! Mmm, mmm good! (pretend to eat, then rub tummy) Thank You, God, for bread! Cereal Bracelets Before class, tie large knots in the ends of the chenille wires. (Or you can use yarn, heavy string, string licorice, or shoelaces.) Give children some Oshaped cereal and show them how to string the cereal onto the chenille wires. As children work and eat some of the cereal, say,  God gives us cereal. We can make pretty bracelets with the cereal. And we can eat the cereal. I’m glad God gives us food. Encourage verbal children to say the Bible Words with you. When children are finished with their bracelets, tie the bracelets loosely around their wrists. Be sure and tag bracelets with names so that they will go home with the owners and germs won’t be shared. 1s will try to string the cereal and eat some. 2s will do the above and say the Bible Words.

Saying Good-bye For children who are leaving, give parents craft activities and copies of Family Together Time Issue 12 from the CD. Tell parents something their children enjoyed. Tell each child, Good-bye. See you next time!

Puppet Fun Teddy Eats Cereal and Toast Go with Teddy to individual children or to small groups of children. Hi! My name is Teddy. Every morning I eat cereal and bread for breakfast. Rub Teddy’s tummy. Cereal and bread are yummy! Do you like cereal and bread? Me too! Let’s clap and hop for cereal and bread! Clap Teddy’s hands and hop him up and down. I’m glad  God gives us cereal and bread.

Going on a Picnic Put the food and supplies in a basket. Say, Let’s go on a picnic. Hold the basket of food and start walking. Encourage the children to walk with you. Stop and spread out a blanket and invite children to sit down. Pull out the bread. What is this? Allow verbal children to respond. Thank You, God, for bread. Give children small pieces of bread spread with margarine. Do the same with the cereal. I’m glad that  God gives us cereal and bread to eat. Clap hands and say, Yeah! I’m glad God gives us food. Happy Smiles Help children press a round cookie cutter onto bread slices and discard the crusts. Spread soft margarine or cream cheese onto the bread. Older children will want to do this themselves. While they work, say,  God gives us bread. Then help children add cereal on top of the bread to make smiles.  God gives us cereal. We can use the cereal to make happy smiles on our bread. Older children can also add cereal for eyes and a nose. Allow children to eat the bread and cereal. 1s will put cereal on the bread and eat it. 2s will do the above, spread the margarine, and add eyes and noses.

Cereal Shakers Before class, write the Bible Words on the backs of small paper plates for each child. Give each child one of those plates and another plate. Children can scribble-color and add food stickers to the backs of plates. God gives us food. Can you say that with me? Let a child help you pour enough dry cereal onto one plate to cover the bottom. Then top it with the other plate front-to-front and seal the plates together with heavy-duty tape. Allow children to eat the cereal as they work. I’m glad that  God gives us cereal to eat. Cereal is good and crunchy. Play music from the CD and show children how to shake their shakers to the music. 1s will scribble-color, add stickers, eat some cereal, and shake their shakers. 2s will do the above and say the Bible Words.

Bible Focus:  Genesis 12:1-9 Bible Memory: Genesis 17:1 “Obey me and do what is right.” (ICB) “Walk before me, and be thou perfect.” (KJV) Life Focus:  God wants us to follow Him. Heart to Heart Moving from one place to another can be stressful and upsetting. How do you think Abram felt when God told him to leave his home and travel to a far-off land? We don’t know how Abram felt, but we do know he obeyed God. How wonderful it would be if our children learned to follow God with Abram’s willing heart! Use today’s lesson to encourage your children to be enthusiastic followers of God. Bible Background Beginning with Genesis 12:1, we see the development of the kingdom of God. God made a special appearance to Abram and told him to move to another part of the world. Abram was 75 years old at the time. Hebrews 11:8 reminds us of the faith that Abram exhibited in his obedience to this call. The blessing offered by God is complex, but a messianic promise is included in “all the people on earth will be blessed through you” (Genesis 12:3, ICB).

Getting Started (10–15 minutes) Step 1 •

Welcome • Use your Scamper puppet to greet the children. • Place an identification tag on each child, and gather necessary information from the adult bringing the child to class. • Provide a container in which children can place their offering money. • Guide each child to an activity center.

Quick Step Follow the Footprints Before class, use the footprint pattern to cut out at least 20 footprints. Make a winding path through the room by taping footprints 1–2 feet apart. Place several toys at the beginning of the path.  God wants us to follow Him. Let’s follow these footprints and pretend we’re moving to a new home. Then we’ll learn a Bible story about a man who followed God and moved. Invite each child to pick up a toy and carry it along the path. When everyone has arrived at the new home, encourage the children to say today’s Bible Memory with you. Repeat the activity, moving toys back to the other end of the path. • What would you take with you if you moved to a new home? • How would you feel if someone told you to move to a new home?

A Tent Home Drape a bedsheet or blanket over a table to make a tent. Put the other items in the box.  God wants us to follow Him. Let’s pretend to camp. Then we’ll learn a Bible story about a man who followed God and camped too. Sit in the tent. Show the teaching picture and talk about moving, tents, and camping. Encourage the children to set up a campsite, using blankets and pillows for beds and play dishes for a meal. Guide them to pack everything back into the box. • Have you ever slept in a tent? • What would you take with you on a camping trip?

Follow and Obey (A unit game center)  God want us to follow Him. Let’s play a game about moving. We’ll

follow and obey some commands. This game is a version of Mother, May I? Have the children stand in a line, shoulder to shoulder. Stand facing them a few yards away. Give one of the commands below to the first child in line. After the child has pantomimed the action, say, You followed and obeyed. Take two hops forward. Continue playing, varying movement instructions, until each child has reached you. You have reached your new home! • Follow and pack your clothes in a suitcase (toys in a box). • Follow and put your suitcase in the car. • Follow and carry a big box down the stairway. • Follow and pick up your backpack.

Before class, put the Bible at the bottom of the backpack. Pack the other items on top. Show the backpack. Ask the children to guess what is inside. Open the backpack, pulling out each item and showing it to the children. Before you take out the Bible, talk about how important this last item is to you. Ask the children to guess what it is. You can help me tell the story of Abram. If I do an action, you can do it too. (Show figure 7a.) Abram loved God. One day, God told Abram to move far away. (Place hand above brow, looking from left to right.) Abram didn’t know where he was to go, but Abram knew it was right to do what God said. So Abram and his family packed all of their belongings. (Pretend to pack, stuffing clothes in a suitcase.) Then Abram, his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the people who helped take care of Abram’s animals left their home to follow God. (Show 7b–7d. Walk in place.) At night, Abram and his family would set up tents to camp. (Show 7e. Kneel and pretend to hammer tent pegs.) God made some important promises to Abram. God said He would make a great nation of people from the people in Abram’s family. Abram and his family thanked God for taking care of them. They followed and obeyed God. (Bow in prayer posture.)

When you stop singing, the child will stop behind another child, take off the backpack and say, “Go and move.” The second child will put on the backpack and go around the circle until you stop singing again. Continue until each child has had a turn. Guide the children in packing and unpacking the various containers with food containers, toys, clothing, and shoes. Talk about how it feels to move. • What do you think would be hard about moving to a new home? • What do you think would be fun about moving to a new home? Wherever we are,  God wants us to follow Him. We can follow God in an old home or a new home. To follow God means we do what God says we should do.

Suitcase Collage Before class, print copies of the Resources CD Suitcase Collage activity on colored paper. Cut out a suitcase for each child. Let’s pretend we are moving. We’ll choose some things to fill our suitcases. Give each child a paper suitcase, a magazine, a pair of scissors, and glue stick. Guide children to look through the magazines and find things they would like to “pack.” Help them cut out the pictures and glue them inside the suitcases. • What would you pack in your suitcase if you were moving? Wherever we are,  God wants us to follow Him. To follow God means we do what God says we should do.

Especially for 2s! Most 2s have difficulty cutting thin magazine paper. Before class, cut out pictures that will interest your 2s. Lay the pictures on the table, and help each child glue a few pictures in his suitcase.

Before class, place the Bible and Abram story figures 7a–7e in your backpack. Show the backpack to your children. I brought my backpack today. I have some things inside that help me remember what Abram did when God told him to leave his home. Let’s listen and find out what happened.

Abram and his wife Sarai packed up all their belongings. (Place 7b beside 7a.) They took their animals and all the people who helped them take care of the animals. (Place 7c in sand pan.) Hand the story figures to five children. I am going to tell the story again. When you hear me talking about the person or thing you are holding, stand and show the figure to everyone. Use the story on the back of the teaching picture. Pause as you mention Abram, Sarai, the sheep and shepherds, Lot, and the tent. Repeat the activity until all children have had a turn holding a story figure. God made some important promises to Abram. Abram loved God and followed wherever God said to go. • What did God tell Abram to do? • Who went with Abram on his trip?

Show Scamper to the children. Scamper wants to hear our Bible Memory song. Let’s show Scamper how we can clap and sing. Play “God AllPowerful” and encourage the children to clap and sing any words they know. Have Scamper clap his paws too. Before the family left, the little boy brought Scamper this backpack. It’s full of nuts and seeds for Scamper and his family to snack on while the boy is away. Scamper is glad his friend has learned to follow God. • How did Scamper’s friend follow God? • What can you do to follow God?

“Abram Moves” Music Activity  God wants us to follow Him. Let’s remember how Abram followed

God. Then we’ll act out ways we can obey and follow God. Play the Bible story music activity “Abram Moves” and lead children in the actions. Talk about the things Abram and his family did to follow and obey God (packed, loaded bundles, carried loads, took care of animals, set up tents, thanked God). Encourage children to act out ways they can obey when taking trips (whether to a local store or some distance). • Show me how you take care of your pets before leaving on a trip. • How can you obey if it is time to leave and you need to put on a jacket? Close your class time with a prayer. Ask God to help the children follow and obey Him.

Heart to Heart Joseph’s brothers took away his beloved coat, plotted to kill him, and sold him to be a servant. Because he was falsely accused, he was sent to jail. Joseph seemed to have everything going against him, yet he continued to serve God no matter where he was or what he was doing. What hardships are you facing? How are you continuing to serve God? Be encouraged as you look at the example of Joseph’s life. Bible Background Joseph arrived in Egypt at age 17. Thirteen years later, he was put in charge of the harvests by Pharaoh himself. Famines were rare in Egypt because of the Nile. Joseph was at least 37 years old when the famine started. He died in Egypt at the age of 110. Though one could question this sojourn, Joseph did not. He simply said, “God sent me here . . . to save people’s lives” (Genesis 45:5, ICB).

Introduce Scout to new children. • Place an identification tag on each child and gather necessary information from the adult bringing the child to class. • Provide a container in which children can place their offering money. • Guide each child to an activity center.

Quick Step Egyptian Rulers’ Crowns Today we are talking about the time when Joseph lived in the country of Egypt. Joseph was chosen by the king of Egypt to do an important job. The king probably wore a crown. He may have given a crown to Joseph too. Let’s make some Egyptian rulers’ crowns and talk about being a ruler in Egypt. Assist children as needed in cutting out and assembling their crowns. They can decorate the crowns with stickers. Talk about what kings and rulers do and what an Egyptian ruler might have worn (robe, fancy jewelry, and so forth). When Joseph was a ruler in Egypt, he served God.  God wants us to serve Him too. • Would you like to be a king? What special things would you do? • How do you think a good ruler treats people?

Joseph Dress-up Play

(Unit dress-up center) Our Bible lesson today is about a young man named Joseph. Joseph served people wherever he was. Joseph wore different types of clothing. Let’s see what kinds of clothes he may have worn. Let the children choose different shirts to wear. Explain that Joseph was at one time a shepherd and then a servant. Next, Joseph was a person in jail; finally, he was a ruler. Joseph would have worn different types of clothing as he did his different jobs. The clothing did not change how Joseph served God. Joseph knew  God wants us to serve Him.

Grain Collage Show the teaching picture. Today our Bible lesson is about the time when Joseph lived in Egypt. Joseph helped the people save a lot of grain. Let’s make a picture using different kinds of grain. For each child, put a little glue in a small cup. Show children how to use cotton swabs or craft sticks to spread glue on small areas of their papers. Then they can place individual grains on those areas. They can make designs with the grains, if desired. Have paper towels or moist towelettes available for wiping fingers. • How is grain or corn grown? (A farmer plants the seeds. God provides the sunshine and rain for the grain to grow.) • What do people use grain for? (to make bread, as cereal, to feed animals)

Sing and Pray Sing: “Love Each Other” and “Serve the Lord” Pray, Thank You, God, for the Bible. Help us to listen and learn today. In Jesus’ name, amen. Show the Joseph bottle puppet. Move it slightly, as though Joseph is talking. My brothers were angry with me. They sold me to people who took me far, far away. Has anyone ever been angry with you? Open your Bible to my story in Genesis 39. I will tell you how I was able to serve God in faraway Egypt. Open your Bible and show children the name Joseph. Then continue with the Bible lesson.

Bible Time (Continue using the Joseph bottle puppet.) When I got to Egypt, I worked for the king’s guard. He liked the good job I did, so he put me in charge of his whole household. But then someone told a lie about me, and I was put in jail. While I was in jail, I still served God and helped others. The jailer liked my help, so he put me in charge of the people in the jail. One night, the king of Egypt had a dream. He needed someone to tell him what the dream meant. The king’s officers asked me to help. I told the king that the dream was from God and that he should save the grain that was grown during the next seven years. After that, there would be seven years when grain would not grow in the country. The king liked the idea. He put me in charge over all of Egypt. (Dress the Joseph puppet in clothing 11a and 11b.) I helped the people buy and save grain for seven years. Then the rain stopped and grain didn’t grow. People came to me and bought grain so they could make bread to eat. One day my brothers came to buy grain. I was surprised to see them. I told them, “I am Joseph, your brother. I am not mad at you. God sent me here to save the grain so everyone would have food to eat.” I know that  God wants us to serve Him and help others.

Bible Review Guide children to put their hands out in front of them with palms up to represent serving. When the children want to answer a question, instead of raising their hands, they should show the hand motion for serving. • When Joseph first got to Egypt, how did he serve the king’s guard? (He took care of the house belonging to the king’s guard.) • How did Joseph serve in jail? (He helped others and was put in charge at the jail.) • How did Joseph serve the king? (He gathered and stored grain, and then he sold grain.) • Who came to buy grain from Joseph? (the people in Egypt, his brothers)

Bible Memory Print and use the Bible Memory hand motions as you teach this unit’s verse. Have a bookmark in your Bible at 1 Samuel 12:20. Ask a volunteer to carefully open the Bible to the marked page. Point to the Bible Memory words as you read them. Lead the children in saying the Bible Memory, using the hand motions.

Serving Others When Joseph helped others, he was serving God.  God wants us to serve Him too. Let’s play a game about serving. Have the children sit in a circle. Give each child a napkin. Put one cookie on the paper plate. Tell children to pass the plate around as the music plays. When you pause the music, the child holding the plate should serve the cookie to the next person. That child can place the cookie on his napkin. Put another cookie on the plate and start the music again. Continue the game until all children have received a cookie. Then they can eat their snacks. When we serve God, we do our work to please Him and help others. God is pleased when we give something to someone else first. You did a good job serving God! • What are some other ways you can serve God and help others?

People in Egypt also had tall storage bins, like silos on a farm. Do you know what they kept in these bins? A Closer Look We need grains to make bread, cereal, and other food products. In today’s Bible story, Joseph helped the people save grain so they would have grain to use during a time when there would be no rain and the grain wouldn’t grow. Let’s look at some different kinds of grain. Encourage the children to look at the grains through magnifying glasses. They can touch the grains and compare how the different grains feel. They can also taste the various cereals and breads. • What colors are the different grains? • Which is the smallest grain? the largest? • Which kind of grain do you think Joseph stored for the people? Joseph worked hard because he knew  God wants us to serve Him.

Pyramid Fun Our Bible story today is about a time when Joseph lived in the country of Egypt. Egypt is an interesting country. Let’s look at some pictures of that country. Then we’ll try to build some buildings like they had in Egypt. Provide a picture book about Egypt. Point to a picture of a pyramid. Encourage the children to work together and build a pyramid of blocks. • What shape is the side of a pyramid? (triangle) • Would you like to live in the country of Egypt? Why or why not? When Joseph lived in Egypt, he served God and helped other people. Joseph knew that  God wants us to serve Him wherever we are.

(Open your Bible to Genesis 39 as you begin to tell the story.) Do any of you remember what happened to Joseph because his brothers were jealous of the special coat given to Joseph by his father? (Joseph’s brothers sold him to some men traveling to Egypt.) When Joseph got to Egypt, he began to work for one of the king’s guards. The story of Joseph is really very exciting. Joseph learned that God helps us as we serve Him! Can you say that phrase with me? (Have the children practice saying the phrase several times, until they are all saying it together: “God helps us as we serve Him!”) Now let’s listen and hear the rest of Joseph’s story. You can help the storyteller every time he says our special phrase. (Play Track 12 from the Resources CD. Encourage the children to join in each time they hear the repeated phrase.)

Give each child a resealable snack bag, and then display the bowl of cereal. Show the teaching picture and talk about what Joseph and his helpers are doing in the picture. This bowl of puffed wheat is something like the grain that Joseph stored so the people could have wheat to make bread. As we name ways that Joseph served God and helped others, I will put spoonsful of puffed wheat in your snack bags. Guide children in naming ways Joseph served God and others. Give clues as needed. (Show stick.) You ran and moved the stick so the lawn mower wouldn’t run over it. Serving Jewelry The Bible tells us that the king of Egypt gave Joseph a ring for his finger, some fine clothes, and a gold chain to wear around his neck. Let’s make necklaces or bracelets we can wear as reminders to serve God, just as Joseph did. Let the children string the O-shaped cereal on the precut lengths of yarn. Encourage children to make patterns along the length of yarn with the various colors of cereal Os. • Where can you wear your serving bracelet as you serve God? • What is a way you can help others this week?  God wants us to serve Him. Let’s pray and ask God to help us remember to serve Him. Lead children in doing so.

Bible Focus: Exodus 7–13 Bible Memory: Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). Life Focus:  God can do anything. Heart to Heart  God can do anything. God never changes. In a world that craves the latest and newest, these truths at first glance don’t necessarily stir our hearts. The same powerful God who inflicted the plagues on Egypt to free His people is the same powerful God who today can free us from our bondage. The same powerful God can heal our relationships, love the unlovable, and work in our lives. God has not changed. He is still all-powerful. Praise Him, for  God can do anything.

Welcome • Welcome each child by name. • Do check-in procedures you follow (name and security tags, collect offering, attendance chart, etc.) • Early arrivers will enjoy doing one or more of the activities described on page 58.

Quick Step I Can Tic-Tac-Toe Let’s discover some things people can and can’t do as we play this fun game. Distribute the reproducible pages and pencils. Tell the children to find classmates who can do the things shown. When they find someone, that person should write his name on that square on the chart. The goal is to get three names in a row, vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. • What are some things you can do? • What are some things you can’t do? There’s lots of things we can do and there’s lots of things we can’t do. We’re going to find out today that there’s someone who can do anything.

Option Challenging Art Let’s discover some things people can and can’t do. Let’s see if you can do this fun challenge. Pass out paper and pencils. Tell the children to draw a picture of a flower. Then have the children draw a flower with their eyes closed. Next have the children turn their papers over and draw an animal they like with their opposite hands. Then have them turn their papers over and draw an animal with their hands clasped together. If you have time, let the children suggest ways they would like to try drawing objects. • Which ways could you draw a good picture? • Which ways could you not draw a good picture? • What are some other things you can do? • What are some other things you can’t do? There’s lots of things we can do, and there’s lots of things we can’t do. We’re going to find out today that there’s someone who can do anything.

Bible Memory 1 Peter 5:7 Our Bible Memory verse is 1 Peter 5:7. Display the Bible Memory poster. Point to the pictures and words as you read the verse aloud. Then ask the kids to read it with you. Lead the kids in reading it again, but tell the kids to emphasize the word all. Have kids read it again, but this time have them emphasize the word your. What do you think the word anxiety means? (problems, fears, concerns) Let’s list some problems, fears, or concerns we have. List these on the board as the children name them. We all have anxieties from time to time. I’m glad the Bible tells us that God cares for us.

Use all of these activities to help children describe how God showed He can do anything and develop Bible skills.

Bible Background for the Teacher God had a plan to get the Israelites out of Egypt. He chose Moses and Aaron to tell Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, to let the people go. Archaeology reveals that a snake on Pharaoh’s crown symbolized power and wisdom. Scripture tells us that Aaron’s staff became a snake and swallowed the snakes of Pharaoh’s sorcerers. The outcome was already clear—God was more powerful. Egypt had many gods that were related to nature. When God sent the first nine plagues, He showed total control over the world He created, as well as the perceived power of Egypt’s gods. For example, the people of Egypt worshiped the Nile River, frogs were a divine symbol of fertility, and their sun god was considered the divine father of Pharaoh. What did God do? God turned the Nile River to blood, the frogs invaded and died, and darkness covered the sun. It was obvious that the one true God had power and authority over Egypt’s gods. But Pharaoh still refused to obey God! When the last plague, the death of Egypt’s firstborn sons occurred, Pharaoh’s son died. This affected him not only personally as a father, but politically, for the heir to his throne was gone. He finally realized God’s sovereignty and let the Israelites go. Before Class Assemble the Moses figure by folding the flaps and then taping them together to form a base. If needed, attach an empty paper tube in the middle of the figure for added sturdiness. Attach the pillars of fire and cloud back-to-back to a ruler.

God Cares for His People

(Exodus 7–13) Do you remember some of the people we’ve learned about from the book of Genesis? (Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) Our Bible story today is from the Old Testament book of Exodus. Exodus comes right after Genesis. At the beginning of Exodus, Moses is a baby but by chapter 7, he is a man. Help the children find Exodus 7:6. Ask for a volunteer to read the verse. Help me tell the story. When you hear the word but, I want you to put your hands on your hips, shake your head, and say, “That didn’t change the king’s mind!” You also need to listen for how God showed He could do anything. Say the word but in an exaggerated fashion to signal the children. Distribute the story strips to the children. Tell them to turn the strips facedown and that you will tell them when to show their strips. God’s people, the Israelites, had a big problem. They were slaves in Egypt. They had to work very, very hard. They were sad and miserable. They prayed to God for help, and He heard their prayers. (Show 10a.) Moses had grown up in Egypt, living as the son of the king’s daughter. God told Moses he was going to lead His people out of Egypt. (Strip 10b) Moses went to the king to ask him to let God’s people leave Egypt. The king said “No!” He wanted God’s people to stay and work for him. So God sent plagues or troubles on the Egyptian people. But nothing happened to God’s people, the Israelites. First all the water became blood. There was no water for the Egyptians to drink. All the fish died. There was blood everywhere. But (kids say “That didn’t change the king’s mind!”). (Strip 10c) Next God sent a plague of frogs. There were frogs everywhere. The frogs even hopped into ovens and onto people. But (kids say “That didn’t change the king’s mind!”). Then came a plague of gnats. The gnats were on all the Egyptian people and the animals. But (kids say “That didn’t change the king’s mind!”). (Strip 10d) Next came a plague of flies. Lots of flies. The Egyptian houses were full of flies. But (kids say “That didn’t change the king’s mind!”). Then came a plague on the animals. All the animals that belonged to the Egyptians died. But (kids say “That didn’t change the king’s mind!”).

Explore His Word (continued) Then came a plague of boils. Festering boils broke out on the skin of all the Egyptian people and all their animals. But (kids say “That didn’t change the king’s mind!”) Next God sent a plague of hail. Huge pieces of hail fell and killed all the Egyptian people and animals that were outside. But (kids say “That didn’t change the king’s mind!”). (Strip 10e) Then came a plague of locusts. The large, noisy bugs covered everything. They ate everything. No green plant or tree was left. But (kids say “That didn’t change the king’s mind!”). (Strip 10f) Next came a plague of darkness. Total darkness covered Egypt for three days. They didn’t have electricity, so they couldn’t see anything or go anywhere. But (kids say “That didn’t change the king’s mind!”). God warned His people to get ready for the last plague. He told them to paint their doorframes with lamb’s blood. Then came the last terrible plague. All of the firstborn sons in Egypt died. Even the king’s firstborn son died. But not one of the sons born to God’s people died. God kept His people safe. The king of Egypt called for Moses and said, “Go! Leave us alone. Go worship your God.” (Strip 10g) God’s people, the Israelites, left Egypt in the middle of the night. By day God went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud. (Show 10h) By night He went ahead of them in a pillar of fire. (Show 10i and Teaching Picture 10.) When the Israelites were afraid, the people could see the cloud or fire and know God was taking care of them.

Bible Review Activity How did God show He can do anything? (He brought all kinds of plagues on the Egyptian people; nothing bad happened to any of God’s people; God guided His people by a pillar of cloud and fire.) Let’s see what else you remember from the Bible story. Distribute the activity pages and pencils. Read the directions aloud and do the page together. • What were some of the plagues God sent on the Egyptians? (water turned to blood, frogs, gnats, flies, livestock died, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, Egyptian firstborn sons died) • What were some ways God showed He cared for His people? (He didn’t let anything bad happen to His people; God guided His people by a pillar of cloud and fire; He let them leave Egypt.) God proved to the Egyptian people and to the Israelites that He can do anything. We also need to remember that  God can do anything.

Bible Skill Builder and Bible Memory Activity Let’s find our Bible Memory verse in our Bibles. Write “1 Peter 5:7” on the board and help the children find it in their Bibles. Remind them that 1 Peter is in the New Testament, near the end of the Bible. Ask the kids to read the verse together. Let’s play a fun game to help us remember our Bible Memory verse. Divide the class into small groups and have each group stand in a circle. Give each group a balloon and tell them they must say the next word of the memory verse as they toss the balloon around the circle, not letting the balloon hit the floor. If the balloon hits the floor, they must start again at the beginning of the verse. To make the game more challenging, have kids try to say the verse three times or more. Anytime you need to remember that God cares for you and that  God can do anything, you can say this verse.

Write at the top of the poster board “God can.” Write these words under the five holes: love, help, give us what we need, forgive, and hear our prayers. Attach the poster board to the edge of a table or between two chairs. Point to the words on the poster board as you read them aloud. Give the kids pieces of paper to wad up. One at a time, kids can throw their wads through the holes. When a paper wad goes through a hole, everyone should say together “God can ___,” saying the word or words underneath the hole. • What are some things God can do? (help us when we’re scared, help us when we’re sick, keep us safe, control the weather, love everyone, hear our prayers, give us families, give us food, give us homes, forgive us, etc.) It’s great to remember that God cares about us. He can help us anytime and anywhere, because  God can do anything.

Option Toss and Worship We’ve talked about lots of things that God can do, and we’ve learned that  God can do anything. Let’s worship God now. Gather the children around the game board. Have the children take turns tossing a coin or object onto the game board. The child tossing the coin can read what’s written on the space the object landed on. The child should then do what the space says to do. Make sure everyone gets at least one turn. We want to worship God because  God can do anything. Invite the children to say the following prayer with you and worship God: God, we worship You because You can do anything. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Bible Focus: Genesis 42:1-3; 45:4-9; 47:1-6, 27 Bible Memory: Deuteronomy 6:5 Life Focus:  Forgive others. Heart to Heart Road rage. Guns in schools. These are just two of the signs of how anger and jealousy are demonstrated in our society. And children see adults playing out these violent scenarios on television, movies, and often in their own lives. Anger and jealousy are powerful emotions, and if anyone had the right to be really angry, it was Joseph. But he knew God’s hand was on his situation. He knew he had the strength to forgive, with God’s help. Today’s lesson will show your students that they have God’s strength to help them  forgive others.

Life Focus (10 minutes)

Use one of the following activities to help your students discover the need for forgiveness.

 Up! Give your students an opportunity to tell how they served God during the past week.

Quick Step Stand Up If . . . Read the following statements aloud. If the statement is true of any students, those students should stand up. If the statement is not true, they should sit down. Stand up if . . . you have ever been to (name a popular vacation spot). you were jealous of someone who went on vacation. you have ever been in a church or school play. you were jealous of someone who got a bigger part than you did. you have been angry with your brothers and sisters. you were jealous of your brothers and sisters. you play a musical instrument. you play a sport. you have been angry with your parents. you have ridden a horse. you have ever had a pet. you were jealous of someone who had a pet. you have been to a friend’s house to spend the night. you were ever jealous of your friends. All of us have been jealous or angry with someone for something. When we are angry or jealous, we do not always think clearly about the situation. Lots of times people end up getting hurt. Our lesson today will give us some help on how to deal with our anger and learn to  forgive others.

Option Floating Forgiveness • When you are angry with or jealous of someone, how do you feel? Let students give their ideas. It’s frustrating, isn’t it? Anger and jealousy can make our hearts seem like they feel heavy. We just don’t feel good at all. Place the egg in the glass of water. It sinks to the bottom of the glass. We can do something to make those angry feelings go away. Begin pouring the salt from the “forgiveness” cup into the glass of water and stirring it. When we really forgive someone, it can actually make our hearts feel lighter. It’s not easy to forgive and forget, but if we ask God, His power can help us to forgive. Continue pouring in salt until the egg begins to float to the top of the glass. Today’s Bible account will help us see how we can  forgive others, even in the midst of a difficult situation.

Use all three of these activities to help your students describe Joseph’s reaction to his brothers coming to Egypt and develop Bible skills.

Bible Background for the Teacher Thanks to God’s warning, Egypt was well prepared for the long famine. Joseph had stored huge amounts of grain during seven years of good crops (Genesis 41). Other nations were not prepared. When the famine came, they needed to buy grain in Egypt. Joseph’s 10 older brothers were among those who came. Probably each one brought a donkey to carry a big bag of grain back home. Apparently Joseph’s younger brother, Benjamin, had taken Joseph’s place as their father’s favorite. He now stayed at home with his father. Joseph knew his brothers as soon as he saw them, but they did not know him. They knew only that they were dealing with a ruler in Egypt. Joseph frightened them by accusing them of being spies. He questioned them about their country and their family. In the end he sold them all the grain their donkeys could carry, but he said he would sell them no more unless they would bring their young brother with them. He kept one of them as a hostage to be sure they would come again (Genesis 42). The next year the brothers came with Benjamin (Genesis 43). Joseph had a clever plan to see whether they were still as selfish and hateful as they had been when they had sold him. Read about it in Genesis 44. Joseph made it seem that Benjamin had stolen a silver cup. He said Benjamin must stay in Egypt as a slave. When one of the other men pleaded to be a slave in Benjamin’s place, Joseph knew his brothers were now loving instead of hateful. Then Joseph told them who he was. He was not angry because they had sold him; he was happy because God had made him ruler in Egypt and he had food for his family. With God’s help, Joseph was able to  forgive. Bible Exploration The Joseph Jam Read the Scripture from Bibles or Activities for Lesson 8. Ask a boy to read Jacob’s part and a girl to read the narration in Genesis 42:1-3. Ask another boy to read the part of Joseph in Genesis 45:4-9. Ask four boys to read the parts of Pharaoh, Joseph, and two brothers in Genesis 47:1-6, 27. Play “The Joseph Jam” from the Resources CD. After the students listen to it once, play it again, and let them read and speak along with it in Activities for Lesson 8. “The Joseph Jam” will help you to remember the lesson of Joseph and his brothers. The good part is that it has a very happy ending. Joseph was able to forgive his brothers and help save their lives. It would have been so easy for Joseph to say “No way!” and make his brothers suffer, but that would not have been a godly response. Joseph knew that he was meant to be used by God. He even explained this to his brothers and said, “It was God who sent me here.” It probably wasn’t easy for Joseph to forgive his brothers; they had really changed his life. • What is the hardest thing that you have ever had to forgive? • Why was it so hard? • Do you think it was hard for Joseph to forgive his brothers? • Why or why not? Joseph’s family and his country, Israel, prospered because of the kind way Joseph treated his brothers. Direct students’ attention to time line panel 12. Explore His Word (continued) Bible Memory With All Your Strength Deuteronomy 6:5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. We’ve been learning Deuteronomy 6:5 using words, signs, and a song. Let’s put all three together today. Give every student an opportunity to recite the verse. Be sensitive to kids who have not been present to learn the verse the past few weeks. Allow them to find and read the passage from their Bibles or Resources Sheet 5. Then have everyone sign the words to the verse as you play “Hear, O Israel.” Encourage everyone to sing along. • Do you think it might be easier to  forgive others if we love God with all our heart, soul, and strength?

Bible Skill Builder Ah! Beautiful Poetry! When we read the Bible we see that God wants us to  forgive others. Let’s learn more about the Bible now. Give each student an Activities cover leaflet. Let each student cut out the Old Testament Poetry bookmark. If desired, each student can trace her bookmark onto a piece of construction paper and cut out the traced shape to make a sturdy backing for the bookmark. To add more durability, the bookmarks can be protected with clear adhesive covering. Allow students to read the books of Poetry on their bookmarks. Encourage them to find one or more of the books of Poetry in their Bibles and put their bookmarks in one of those places. Collect the Activities covers and store them for use next week.

Bible TIme Line Ask a student to write “Forgive others” on time line panel #12. Distribute one “Joseph’s Family in Egypt” Bible time line card to each student. Review the Fast Facts on the card and ask students to write their names and “Forgive others” on their own cards. Give kids their time line cards from past weeks. Ask each child to shuffle his cards, and then place them in order faceup on the table. This will help your students put Bible events in chronological order. Collect the time line cards and store them for use next week.

Note Be aware of family situations. Some students may be in the middle of family conflict, and this may be very painful. Stress the fact that we cannot forgive on our own, but God can give us the strength to forgive.

Divide the class into small groups or pairs and have them turn to “Face the Forgiveness” in Activities for Lesson 8. Give students time to read a few situations and come up with different endings or responses. When students are finished, discuss each situation and talk about how it could be difficult to forgive. • What things make it hard for you to forgive? (anger, hurt, pain, etc.) • Are you willing to  forgive others when they hurt you? Our help comes from God. We cannot truly  forgive others without His help. Let’s make a plan to forgive someone who has hurt us.

Option Letter to God Pra

Ask students to read the hypothetical letter from God printed in Activities for Lesson 8. Encourage each student to write a short prayer note answering God’s letter. Help with words and spelling as needed, but make this a personal, quiet, reflective activity for the students. Assure students that they will not be sharing their letters with the class. Play the CD songs as students work. • Will God forgive you when you make mistakes? (Yes.) • What do you need to do to receive God’s forgiveness? (Ask Him.) • Are you willing to  forgive others when they hurt you?

Live It Out Step 4 •

Life Focus (10 minutes)

 Forgive others.

Use one of the following activities to help your students make a plan to forgive someone.

Quick Step Coat of a Different Color We are going to do something right now to help us  forgive others. I will give you a pencil and a piece of paper shaped like a coat. Take a few minutes and think about someone that you have had a disagreement with or been angry with. Maybe this is someone who has hurt your feelings. Write down that person’s name. Then crumple up the paper into a ball and hold onto it for a few minutes. When everyone is finished, ask students to pray silently, asking God to help them forgive the person whose name they wrote down. You should close this time in prayer, asking God to give strength to your students that they really will be able to forgive. Now take your paper wad and throw it into the trash can. Try to slam dunk it on the first throw! As you throw it away, ask God to help this remind you that you have forgiven this person. Help kids understand that doing things God’s way results in victories they can rejoice over.

Option Prayer Walk Before class, write the following Scripture references and directions on the poster boards. Then display the posters with Bibles at various stations around the room. (Note: If your classroom is too small, consider moving this activity to a hallway or a larger room.) Poster 1: Read Psalm 103:8-12. Thank God for forgiving you. Poster 2: Read Luke 17:3, 4. If a person hurts you more than once, do you need to keep on forgiving? Think of someone you have forgiven more than once and pray for that person. Poster 3: Read James 5:16. Is there someone you need to talk to? Pray for that person. Poster 4: Read John 14:26. Who else can help you learn to forgive? Thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Poster 5: Read James 1:19, 20. Why should we try to forgive and not be angry? Ask God to help you have the power to forgive. Start each student or small group of students at a different place and then have them move clockwise to the next area. You will be going on a prayer walk to help you  forgive others. Read the Scriptures and the prayer suggestions, and pray. After students are finished, end the activity in a prayer led by you. Ask God to help your students as they try learn to forgive others.

 Up! How did students thank God during the past week?

Quick Step Guess What! Play the game 20 Questions, basing it on people, places, or things that students need. The person who is “it” thinks of a person (parent, friend, neighbor), a place (school, home, church building), or a thing (food, clothing, money) that he needs. The student should tell which category he has chosen, and the rest of the class tries to guess what the item is by asking him questions that can be answered with only the words yes and no. If the group cannot guess the need in 20 questions or less, the person who is “it” is a winner. • We all have specific needs. Who ultimately provides for our needs? (God) God met the needs of the people of Israel. Then He commanded them to celebrate a feast that would help them remember His provisions. Let’s learn about that feast and more ways that we can  thank God.

Option “Ad” Up Your Needs Supply students with a variety of store ads and catalogs. Have students search through the ads and select items they need. You might want to remind students of the difference between needs and wants. As students select items they need, have them add up the advertised costs of those needs. After an appropriate length of time, discuss what needs students have found. • What different kinds of needs did you find listed in the advertisements? (clothing, food, homes and furnishings, personal care and health products, and so on) • How much does your total list of needs cost? • What other needs do you have that were not shown in the ads? (Possible answers: love, protection, health, friendships, wisdom, God’s salvation) • Who ultimately supplies all our needs? Use all three of these activities to help your students know that the Israelites celebrated God’s provision for their needs and develop Bible skills.

Bible Background for the Teacher Israel had three annual feasts where all the men were required to gather and worship the Lord (Exodus 23:14-17). The Feast of Unleavened Bread commemorated the exodus from Egypt and celebrated the beginning of the barley harvest. The Feast of Weeks (or Harvest or Pentecost) celebrated the end of the spring harvest of grain (wheat, corn, and barley); it also commemorated the giving of the law at Sinai in later Judaism. The Feast of Tabernacles (or Ingathering or Booths) commemorated Israel’s desert wanderings after the exodus and celebrated the harvest of the vines and orchards. This is the feast described in today’s lesson texts. In Leviticus 23 the Lord commanded Israel to celebrate this feast in their seventh month, which falls during our September and October. The feast lasted a week with a closing assembly on the eighth day. The first and last days were to be days of rest. The feast followed the harvest of orchard fruits, and so fruits and branches were waved in joy during the celebration. During the Feast of Tabernacles the Israelites were to remember and experience what life was like during the years when Israel wandered in the wilderness. Using tree branches bent and woven together, each family built a sukkah (or booth), in which to live during the feast. (See also Nehemiah 8:15-18.) In this way everybody  thanked God for how He had sustained their nation in the desert and later blessed them in Canaan. In Deuteronomy the emphasis is on the joy of the feast. Everyone was to join in the rejoicing (Deuteronomy 16:13, 14). Even those who were often in need or forgotten were to take part, including the servants, foreign residents, widows, and orphans. There were specific rules about the celebration concerning its length (seven days) and location (“at the place the Lord will choose”). Each day specific sacrifices were to be offered. (See Numbers 29:12-40.) The central reason for the rejoicing was to be the blessing of the Lord in both harvest and labor. By realizing how good God had been to them, and by letting everyone know this through celebrations, their joy would “be complete” (Deuteronomy 16:15). Bible Exploration The Feast of Tabernacles Read together the lesson Scripture, Leviticus 23:39-43 and Deuteronomy 16:13-15. Then look at “The Feast of Tabernacles” in Activities for Lesson 12. Have students read the definitions of tabernacle, threshing floor, and winepress. Discuss the questions about the Feast of Tabernacles. • When was the Feast of Tabernacles celebrated? (after the harvest had been gathered, beginning with the fifteenth day of the seventh month) • What was the length of the feast? (seven days) • Who celebrated the feast? (everyone who lived in the towns, including the servants, foreign residents, widows, and orphans) • Where did the Israelites live during the feast? (in booths) • Why was the Feast of Tabernacles celebrated? (God had blessed the people. Leviticus 23:43 indicates that this feast was celebrated as a remembrance of the time when the Israelites lived in the desert and God provided for them.) Divide students into small groups. Give each group one of the following Scripture verses, and ask students to discover what needs God provided for the Israelites: Exodus 14:10, 19-22 (safety); Exodus 15:23-27 (water); Exodus 16:11-15, 35 (quail and manna); Exodus 17:8-13 (victory over their enemy); and Deuteronomy 8:1-4 (food, clothing that did not wear out). Surely the Israelites  thanked God as they remembered these provisions and celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles.

Explore His Word (continued) Bible Memory Expressions of Thanks Psalm 100:4, 5 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Let students read the Bible Memory passage silently from their Bibles or the Bible Memory poster. Then give everyone an opportunity to recite the verses for the class. Besides the reasons mentioned in these verses, we can also  thank God because He gave us more than just words to use. He gave us the gift of creativity. He gave us music. He gave us art. He gave us movement. I want you to express your thanks to God in some creative way right now. Maybe you’d like to illustrate this Bible Memory passage using art supplies. Perhaps you’d like to listen to the Christian songs on the CD and thank God for music. Or you might want to create movements and motions to express thanks to God. If possible, set up different areas of your classroom to accommodate these forms of art from which your students can choose.

Bible Skill Builder Thankful People Shuffle Place the testament and division cards in order on a table. Shuffle the Bible people cards from pages 93 and 96 that were not used in previous weeks. Ask students to select 11 cards without looking at what is written on the cards. Place the selected cards in a stack facedown on the table. Divide students into two teams and play the Thankful People Shuffle with the cards selected today. (Directions for playing the game are on page 68.) When the game is over, keep any Bible people cards not selected yet and use them to continue the game next week. We’ve talked about some more Bible people who had plenty of reasons to  thank God. Let’s explore more reasons and ways to thank Him.

Ask students to verbally answer the printed questions about thanksgiving holidays in their activity leaflets. Allow students to explain why they think people celebrate such holidays. Ask them to tell in what special ways their families give thanks to God. • How are thanksgiving celebrations similar to the Feast of Tabernacles? (Most countries that celebrate thanksgiving days do so because they want to recognize the ways in which God has blessed their countries. In America, Thanksgiving day celebrations were started by people who were thankful to God for the ways in which He had provided for them as they settled a new country. In the same way, the Israelites celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles to thank God for leading their ancestors safely through the wilderness and into the promised land.) Let’s make a plan now to  thank God.

Display Resources Sheet 4. Talk about the importance of praising and thanking God for all the blessings He gives. Pass the plate of prepared food around the classroom. As each student selects one bite of a fruit or vegetable, he should mention a blessing that God has provided in the past week. Encourage students to name as many different blessings as possible. You can pass the plate around the room several times as students select bites of food and name other blessings. • Why do you think God gives us so many daily blessings? (God loves us. God cares for everyone He has created.) Let’s make a plan now to raise our praise and  thank God.

Live It Out Step 4 •

Use one of the following activities to help your students celebrate and express appreciation for God’s provision.

Quick Step Respond to God’s Goodness God provided for our most important need when He sent His Son, Jesus, to die as punishment for our sins. We can celebrate God’s gifts through actions of praise. • What can you do this week to  thank God for all of the ways in which He blesses you? Direct students’ attention to “Respond to God’s Goodness” in Activities for Lesson 12. Students should identify what they will do to worship and praise God, how they will give to others, or what they will sacrifice for the sake of others this week. Pray with the class about their commitments before ending your class session. Encourage students to carry out the commitments they have made.

Option Celebrate and Give Thanks Tell students you are going to have a fun celebration to thank God for everything He provides. First, give each student a slip of paper, a pencil, and a balloon. Have each student write one thing on her paper for which she is thankful. Roll the papers, slip them inside the balloons, and then inflate and tie the balloons closed. Let students decorate the room with the balloons and crepe streamers. Play music from the Resources CD as kids work. After the room is decorated, let kids enjoy some popcorn. As kids pop popcorn into their mouths, they can shout out things for which they are thankful. After the snack, let kids pop the balloons and discover the slips of thanksgiving inside. (Kids should try to pop balloons they did not prepare.) Gather kids in a prayer circle and explain that they are going to give popcorn prayers of thanks to God. Explain that in popcorn prayers, there is no specific order. Kids can call out their thanks whenever they want. Open the prayer, “Dear God, we thank You for . . . ” Then kids can begin to tell God things they are thankful for. They can thank God for the things named on the papers retrieved from the balloons. Close the prayer time when it seems kids have named all of their thanks. Today’s celebration doesn’t need to stop when our party ends. Take a piece of crepe streamer home with you as a reminder to celebrate and  thank God every day.
