CLASSROOM BASED You can choose to group kids by ages or grades into classes with teams of teachers. Kids will gather with their teachers at Sidewalk Celebration and then go to classrooms where they’ll have a time for exploring the Bible story and applying the day’s lesson to their lives. All the day’s activities can be done in the classroom, including service or craft projects, games, and snacks. Or kids can move to individual sites for some activities. All classes will return to Sidewalk Celebration for an energy-

6. Decide how and when you will do VBS. Look at two options. Main Street is a flexible program that will work no matter how you choose to set it up. And the best way to do Main Street is the way that works best for you! 7. Share the joy of Main Street and start planning and recruiting!

SITE BASED If you choose to group kids by ages or grades into crews with crew leaders, you will want to set up Sidewalk Celebration plus four main sites—Parable Productions, Fun Factory, Brown Bag Bistro, and Firehouse Fitness. You should plan to have one crew leader for each group of six to eight kids.

If you do a site rotation format, you will need these resources for your leaders: Leader’s Guides for all sites Student Books for Brown Bag Bistro Bible Pin Pals for every child plus all the publicity, decorating, and follow-up resources!

The crews will gather together during Sidewalk Celebration, rotate as crews to the various sites, and then return to Sidewalk Celebration for the closing. Crews of the same age level can travel together to the various sites where site leaders will guide the activities to meet the kids’ age-level needs. If you have a large number of kids in one age-level, you may want to divide the group further. (For benefits of grouping kids into crews, see page 22 of the Director’s Guide.)

WHY USE THE MAIN STREET CHARACTERS? On Main Street you’ll find Heidi Claire investigating what’s inside out and upside down, Chef Pierre busy baking and delivering tasty treats, Justin Time going out of his way to lend a hand, and Cooper eager to help (and entertain).

I Love VBS! I LOVE VBS. I was not raised in a church that did VBS so it was a fairly unknown concept to me until I started attending a Christian Bible college. Even then, it wasn’t until I had firsthand experience with VBS a couple years ago that I REALLY understood what goes into it.

When my friend was a youth pastor, their church had VBS. There was a lady in the church who picked up kids from her community and brought them to church. One was a small boy, maybe 5-6, whose family did not attend church anywhere. He loved VBS, but the teachers did not love him. He was VERY active and had difficulty sitting still. However, he had discovered God loved him, even when he was bad. He was so excited about the fact that God loved him. When VBS was done, oh my — to the teachers’ regret, he came to Sunday school every Sunday. He loved God, whom he knew loved him. Christmas that year was on Sunday, and my friend planned a huge birthday party for Jesus. The little boy was SO thrilled, because he wanted to sing happy birthday to Jesus, who loved him. On Christmas Eve, the little boy and his family were in the family van Christmas shopping. Their van was hit head-on by a drunk driver and the little boy was killed. At his funeral, his teachers were ashamed because of their attitude to him, but they realized also that because of VBS he was singing happy birthday to Jesus face-to-face. VBS works!

But let me tell you this, I know VBS changes lives because, as an adult, I have watched it happen before my eyes. I know VBS changes lives because it changed MY life, as an adult. It didn’t change my life when I was 5 or 8 or 11. It changed my life at 24. It opened my eyes to a fun-loving, adventurefilled, creative God who delights in children of all ages and desperately wants his people to know him and his character and his salvation.

As he found himself slowing down a bit in his early 80s, it wasn’t that easy to find jobs he could do in his church. His energy, hearing, and sight weren’t what they used to be. He loved serving God, and he loved the freshness and excitement of the kids at VBS. He tearfully told the VBS director he thought he’d need to retire from working at VBS. But the wise VBS director instead asked him to come every day and supervise one important part of the day: hand washing. After the recreation time and crafts and before snack time, each child was to wash his or her hands. Although willing, he was at first hesitant and not sure he’d really be contributing. But then he realized he was the only volunteer who got to speak to every child each day. As he encouraged them to use a little more soap and take a

Everybody loves it when kids invite their friends to VBS. That’s how it’s suppose to work. Teachers encourage the friends to come back the next day to give us the maximum amount of time we can have with them to pour God’s love into their lives. When you have just five days, you don’t want to miss a minute. So as a teacher you feel a bit like you’ve failed somehow when a student comes one day and you may never see them again. Disappointed, you conclude you must not have made much of an impression on those one-day-only kids.

VBS Can Change a Life!

But don’t be too sure. Her mom wouldn’t let her go to church. When one of the neighbors invited her to attend VBS one day, her mom grudgingly agreed she could go. But just for one day. At the close of that day, she left with eyes shining, fists full of crafts and papers. The teacher must have hoped she’d be back, but they never saw her again. The teacher’s name is long lost, and she can’t sing any of the songs now, but she remembers that day. She remembers how much she liked the music, how fun it was, and that she heard and believed that day that Jesus is really the Son of God. That one day ignited a spark and burned into her heart a hunger for God and the truth of his love. Much later as a young adult she was invited to church again. Her friends were surprised when she not only agreed to attend, but quickly made a commitment to Christ as though this was something she had been waiting to do. Now active in a church in the Pacific Northwest, her eyes still light up when she talks about that one day in VBS.

little more time, he got to greet them, learn their names, and provide one more bit of Christ’s love to each student. They call him Grandpa and he touched the lives of every one of those children, as well as some of their parents. He’s now in his upper 80s but still an integral part of VBS at his church. He provides hugs and stability and whispers of Jesus’ love and the children give back with affirmation of being needed and still making a vital contribution. It seems VBS changes lives for people of all ages.

THE BUSINESS OF

Reaching Children for Jesus As a vocational children’s pastor, part of what I do is assess our current ministries. If they aren’t fulfilling the intended purpose, they get scrapped. If there is something new that we can do to better facilitate our purpose, it’s time for change. Recently I was evaluating our summer ministries, specifically, Vacation Bible School. We do VBS each summer to fulfill the Great Commission (reach kids with the Gospel and make disciples) and to engage our community. I looked at other summer programming options—there are lots of new programs we could start to help us reach these goals. When I stopped to ask which new program would be best, it dawned on me: I already have a program that does what I’m after. Why should we start several new programs to do the work Vacation Bible School was designed to do? I left that evaluation session with a renewed passion to make Vacation Bible School the biggest thing of the summer. If you have decided to use VBS in your church, purposefully to step up to the plate and take it from good to great. Decide that you are going to take seriously this business of reaching children for the Lord Jesus Christ!
