God Makes All the Animals Genesis 1:20-25 Bible Words: “God . . . made the world” (Acts 17:24, NIV).

Children will • know that God made everything.

• feel thankful that God made everything.

• pray, “Thank You, God, for making everything.”

Children will accomplish the goals when they • say the Bible words, “God made the world.”

• pray, “Thank You, God, for making the animals.”

• sing about the animals God made.

• examine an animal that God made.

• name animals that God made or point to them in pictures.

Before Class For the Bible story, you will need the classroom Bible, Zach the puppet, the visual from last week, and prepared animal borders (see Lesson 1).

Prepare the Game Center, the Family Living Center, and the God’s Wonders Center. If you are the only teacher, use just the God’s Wonders Center. Have materials prepared for the Art Center to use after the Bible story.

Let’s Get Started Have Zach greet each child by name and say, “Do you have a pet at home? Tell me about your animal.” Have Zach guide the children to give their offerings and get involved in one of the learning centers. Talk to the children about animals that God made. Invite the children to roar like a lion, moo like a cow, or walk like a monkey.

LEARNING ACTIVITY CENTERS (30 minutes)

Game Center Supplies none Let children have fun imitating animals. Ask children to name some animals. Choose an animal that was named and say, God made the world, and God made elephants. Ask children to repeat that after you. Let’s act like elephants! Lead the children in walking like an elephant. Choose another animal children named. God made the world, and God made ___. Ask children to repeat that after you. Then lead the children in acting like that animal. Do the same for several of the animals the children named.

• Elephant: walk bent over; clasp hands and swing arms like a trunk • Horse: gallop and neigh • Bird: flap arms and tweet and chirp • Duck: waddle and quack • Dog: walk on hands and knees and bark

Family Living Center Supplies variety of stuffed animals or pictures of animals God made the whole world and everything in it. That means that God made all the animals. God made the first people, Adam and Eve. God gave Adam the job of naming all the animals. Let’s see what names we might give the animals. Have children touch or hold each stuffed animal (or picture) and give the animal a name. These names can be the kind of animal or a personal name for the animal. Adam and Eve must have felt thankful for the animals God made. Thank You, God, for the animals.

God’s Wonders Center Supplies magnifying glass, bug collection or ant farm (or collect a few bugs in small glass jars) If a bug collection or ant farm is not available, collect a few bugs in small glass jars.

Punch air holes in each jar’s covering. Bring the bugs to class, sealed in the glass jars. Or, if the weather permits, take children on a walk outside to look for bugs. Prepare a jar with air holes in which to place the bugs. Bugs can be examined and then released.

Have children gather around the bug display. God made the world. He made the earth, the sun, the stars, the plants, and the animals. God made the bugs too. Look at these bugs. Have you ever seen any of these bugs? Let children respond. What kind of bug is this? Thank You, God, for making bugs.

Let the children examine the bugs. Tell them the names of each one. Let the children use the magnifying glass to take a closer look at the bugs. Lead the children to pray, “Thank You, God, for everything You have made.”

WORSHIP AND BIBLE STORY (15 minutes)

Let’s Worship God Have Zach tell the children, “It’s time to put our things away so we can sing to God and pray.” Begin singing as soon as the first child sits in the circle with you. Sing “God Is Great” followed by “In the Beginning,” using the names of animals the children suggest.

God Is Great (Tune: “London Bridge”) God made all the *stars above, *stars above, *stars above.

God made all the *stars above. God is great. (*fish and whales; dogs and cats) In the Beginning (Tune: “The Farmer in the Dell”) God made the *world. Yes, God made the *world.

In the beginning, God made the *world. (*puppies, lions, bugs, etc.)

Our Bible words are, “God made the world.” Can you say that with me? Encourage children to say the Bible words with you. God made all the animals! Lead the children in saying and doing the motions for “When I Pray.” Then pray, Thank You, God, for making the animals.

When I Pray When I pray, I fold my hands (fold hands) and close my eyes; (close eyes) I think about God, and He hears me. (put hand behind ear)

Let’s Learn from the Bible [Just for the teacher: Young children love animals. These children are just beginning to learn how to care for animals. Perhaps they have pets at home. Today’s lesson will teach them that God made all of the animals. God is great because He made the animals.

Your children will learn that God gave them the special job of taking care of animals.

They will spend some time today pretending to take care of animals. They will discover that God shows His love for them by giving them animals to care for. This will lead them to feel thankful for God’s animals.]

Introduction: Point to the visual board prepared during Lesson 1. The Bible says that God made the world. He made the day and night. He made the sun, moon, and stars.

He made the land and sea. He made the plants. Each time God looked at something He had made He said, “This is good!” What did God say about the world He made?

(Children should answer, “This is good.”) These are not the only things God made in His world. God also made the animals. Help me by making the sound of each animal that is named during our Bible story.

The Bible Story: God looked at the world that He made. He saw that it was a beautiful world. It had good-smelling flowers and lots of blue water. It had tall mountains. The sun, moon, and stars were in the sky. God said, “This is good.”

But God wasn’t finished. He’d just begun!

God made fish to live in the water. Can you make a fish face with me? Add fish border in the water area.

God made birds to fly in the air. Can you chirp and tweet like a bird? Can you pretend to fly like a bird? Add bird border in the sky area.

After God made animals for the sky and sea, He made animals for the land. He made the lions. What do lions sound like? Add lion border. God made the sheep.

What do sheep sound like? Add sheep border.

What other animals did God make? Call on one child at a time to make the sound of an animal. Everyone else can guess the name of the animal.

God was very busy the day He made all the animals. What did God say about the animals that He made? (Children should answer, “This is good.”) God liked all the animals He made!

Let’s Apply the Lesson Our Bible words are “God made the world.” Invite children to say the Bible words with you. Then ask children to name some animals that God made. Use two animal names at a time in the following song to the tune of “London Bridge.” Invite children to sing and clap their hands while singing.

God made all the cats and dogs, cats and dogs, cats and dogs.

God made all the cats and dogs. Thank You, God! We’re so glad that God made all the animals. He wants us to take care of them. How can we take care of the animals God made? (Answers will vary.) We should always be kind to animals and take care of the animals God made. Thank You, God, for making the animals!

Have children stand and do the following action rhyme with you.

A Way to Go A robin flies, (wave arms) a bunny hops, (hop up and down) a turtle crawls so slow; (crawl or step in place very slowly) God gave each animal He made a special way to go! (walk two fingers on one arm)

LEARNING ACTIVITY CENTERS (20 minutes) Note: Let all the children visit the Art Center. If your class is large and you have several teachers, you may want to have the children also visit the other learning centers suggested under the Learning Activity Centers on pages 2 and 3.

Art Center Supplies copies of p. 7, washable ink pads in a variety of colors, moist towelettes Here are pictures of some animals God made. Can you name these animals? Let the children do so. Oops! Parts of their bodies are missing! Let’s add our thumbprints to finish the animals. Then we can color them. Thank You, God, for animals!

Using one color at a time, help each child roll his or her thumb from side to side across an ink pad. Note that the swirl on a thumbprint is close to the first joint. The swirl makes a cuter body. Then place the thumb in position on each animal and again roll the thumb from side to side. If available, use red ink for the ladybug, green for the frog, pink for the pig, and so on. Use moist towelettes to clean off the ink from thumbs.

Our Bible words are “God made the world.” These animals are a part of God’s world. God made all the animals. Thank You, God, for ladybugs. Lead children to thank God for each animal.

Let’s Go Home Have Zach tell the children that it’s time to clean up. If a child is reluctant to help, give him or her a specific job to do. When all materials are picked up and put away, gather the children in a circle. Lead them in playing “Duck, Duck, Goose.” For a variation of the game, each child could choose two different animals to name as he walks around the circle (e.g., “Lion, lion, tiger,” or “Dog, dog, cat”).

Take one child at a time to the door as parents arrive. Make sure children take home the thumbprint art they made in the Art Center.
