shop because of the cooler weather, changing schedules, and numerous events. Women love to find a new coat, a day-to-night dress, or the perfect pair of denim to modernize their closets for the current season.

We have chosen six looks to highlight the main trends that were seen at fashion week and are now available for you to incorporate into your personal style. As you will notice in fashion magazines throughout the world, designers have been influenced by a variety of cultures and experiences. Standard Style edits all the collections to accommodate every age and every budget.

As we scoured the fashion scene, we have found new collections and styles while also focusing on timeless classics. As Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street. Fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” If an edgy look is not for you, the classic Diane Von Furstenburg black skirt might be. We have gathered all the great pieces in this industry and can ensure, whether you are the classic grandmother, the working woman, the mom, the young professional, or the hipster, that the looks are fresh and in our boutiques. Our favorite thing is helping you feel confident and comfortable in the current looks from our designers. This season, the key pieces that we found included in many collections included black blazers, white dress shirts, vintage cardigans, fur and leather, men’s dress shirts with a feminine twist, sequins, floral patterns, and plaids. With these materials and styles in mind, we have grouped the pieces to help you visualize what the designers creatively constructed into unique wearable garments. Enjoy the season!

Woodstock THE Bohemian

From Wo o d s t o c k , the modern-day hippie-chic has emerged again this season.

However, the colors are not as muted this time around and include floral patterns and jewel tones. Designers also incorporated silk into the materials. The hot denim trend this year is the boyfriend jean. Layering is an important part of this look, so pile on the sweaters and accessories, and finish it off with a great pair of boots. Keep the nails natural or light pink. Makeup should consist of light glossy lips and natural eye makeup to keep this trend cohesive.

THE UNDERGROUND

When you look around the most fashionable cities in the world, you see the grunge influence on the streets. The history of grunge has been around since the 70s with the underground punk

movement, think The Clash. Take this trend to this season by mixing plaid button-downs, silk tops, black wrap sweaters, and leather coats paired with black leggings, leather pants, harem pants or dark skinny denim. With pieces primarily in blacks and grays, this look is comfortable and edgy. Try a pair of bootie

heels, fingerless gloves, scarves, a beanie or a fedora to finish off the look. Lacquer your nails with dark purple, pair a dark eye with light lips and natural hair texture to complement this trend.

LIKE A ROLLING STONE ROCK & ROLL The rockstar look has been revamped for an encore season.

Key elements are abundant in fur accents, leather coats pants and skirts, rolled denim shorts with hosiery underneath, and sequin embellishments. Studded accessories are a must and are prevalent on shoes belts and handbags. Mix luxurious soft silks and fur with hard leather and metal chains. Think all the glamour of Elizabeth Taylor meets the legendary rock status of Mick Jagger. Black nails, smokey eyes and a dark lip intensify the look.

The Boy's Club FOR THE

Working Women Men’s wear resurfaces this season but without the androgynous undertones... keep the look distinctly feminine with polished button downs, blazers, and classic skirts. The Boy’s Club extends to causal wear in the form of slouchy skinny jeans, pinstriped shirts, and double-breasted jackets. Girls make their mark in the workplace and can take this trend to the office by pairing a boyish blazer over a feminine dress. Partner traditional materials like tweed or cashmere with tailored pants. Accessorize with belts, glasses, and cross-body bags. Keep nails short and natural with makeup and hair polished but natural.

Jackie, Oh! TIMELESS

PIECES

Just as Jackie Kennedy used fashion to portray an image of class, today’s sophisticated woman can do the same. This season’s modern vintage look captures a refined era of classic femininity. Look for tie-neck blouses, wool coats, subdued prints, and fitted silhouettes. Day dresses are conservative, yet flattering, and can be taken to night with tights and patent leather pumps. Add pearls and rhinestones and a vintage inspired wool hat. Red lips and black eye-liner on the upper lid, with loose curls for the hairstyle, will tie together this timeless look.

This is my favorite season to date for Fall clothing. Not only because I am launching my first denim collection, Baldwin Denim but I think that American menswear is really starting to step up its game and make a mark in this world of fashion. It has been really cool to be apart of the transition over the last 10 years of my life. Going from a very mass market shopping experience; baggy boxy fits to clean classic and modern fits in small specialty store shopping environments has been rapid change. Given the information on social networking sites: blogs, magazines and television, information on trends and connection with new fresh ideas or common consensus is faster than ever. This is exciting times for me because the modernist is really heading back in time to the sixties, where design was fresh and now can be considered classic. Clean lines in architecture and clothing were happening simultaneously, which made 2009 a great year to revisit our heritage and the classics of the past.

Letter From The Stylist Matt Baldwin

Dressing up is more common amongst the trendsetters. This trend is key from being able to wear a great fitting oxford in place of my old go to t-shirt. And, instead of grabbing the pair of denim with the kitschy pocket that I retired in 2007 I go to a pair of dry logo-less pair of denim. My once go to (even with a suit) sneaker is being replaced with a dress shoe or boat shoe. I have always tried to strike the line between dressy and casual but I have been focusing on the side of dressy as I get older. Maybe it’s the knowledge of how to pair colors or just knowing how proportions work in menswear. Whatever the case… tailored clothing is here to stay. From fitted work wear to distressed preppy we are going back in time to grab a great pair of Ray-Ban shades and classic pair of denim. “It is all about the masculinity of a man and not some on the fence attempt to stand out of the crowd”, Said Daniel Cummings, Men’s Buyer. Walking billboards for a clothing line does not equal arrival on the fashion scene. So away with the metro sexual, and say goodbye to Ed Hardy and his best friend Christian Audigier. American men… grow some facial hair. Pull out the Ray Bans, Redwing work boots, and throw on a pair of dry selvage denim… Let’s go back to our roots of what this country was built on… hard work and dressing the part.

For The Working Man FITTED WORK WEAR

Fall ‘09 is all about being a man.

Menswear is coming back to the roots of America and the hard work that built this country. So take your flannels, military jackets, and sweatshirts to your tailor. Layer it up and wear it with American pride. It’s a perfect blend of practical function and fashion. For the past few years, when men’s style is mentioned, images of over embellished clothing and highlighted hair probably come to mind. Not the case for this season. Think more Steve McQueen than Brett Michaels, with designers grabbing inspiration from classic American masculinity. With fitted work wear, we give a nod to blue-collar workers. The difference is the modern fit. Gone are the days of a one-size-fits-all mentality; instead we see a more fitted (not tight) approach. But these aren’t clothes meant to be kept pristine; they’re meant to be worn, worked in, and loved.

The Industrial Modernist CLASSICS REVISITED

The modern suit is here to stay. Each season, designers are getting closer to true made-to-measure fits for ready-towear. This season Shades of Greige and J. Lindeberg are dropping the bombs on menswear with classic looks and great modern fits. Grey and black is the palette for industrial modern. The black penny loafer and the oxford can be paired with the suits, or a pair of wax-coated Nudie jeans worn with a blazer as a suit separate.

The Selvage Movement

As our country continues to press forward in our quest for the perfect pair of denim, we are getting better fits, fabrics, construction, and washes. 78 | Standard Style Boutique

2009 is the year of dry selvage. Here’s the 411 on selvage. It’s a type of denim that forms a clean natural edge that does not unravel. It is commonly presented in the unwashed or raw state. Typically, the selvage edges will be located along the out-seam of the pants, making it visible when cuffs are worn. Although selvage denim is not completely synonymous with unwashed denim, the presence of selvage always implies that the denim used is a higher quality. The word selvage comes from the phrase “self-edge,” the natural edge of

LEFT TO RIGHT Baldwin Denim The Henley Nudie Jeans Thinn Finn Baldwin Denim The Rogan Baldwin Denim The 77

a roll of fabric. As applied to denim, it means that which is made on old-style shuttle looms. Selvage is desirable because the edge can’t fray like lower-grade denims that have separate wefts which leave an open edge that must be stitched. Shuttle looming is a more time-consuming weaving process that produces denim of a tighter weave, resulting in a heavier weight fabric that lasts.

If your next pair of denim is selvage, then your dollars will be well spent. Wear them dressed up or casual. Bring this one and only pair on a trip. There is no need to pack anything else. Wash only when you can’t wait any longer and watch them age to the best pair of denim you have ever bought. Cheers!

So in his honor we are taking his favorite hobby and giving you options to pull off the look of the classic American biker. The Nice Collective combat boot is the house favorite here at Standard Style. Every American male needs a tailored leather jacket and a pair of dry denim in his closet. Americana TIMELESS TRADITION

Now is the time to embrace the past of this great country-

-taking pride in our heritage, from a great bottle of Kentucky bourbon to Red Wing work boots and other American-made products. As Americana continues, we look to keep our dollars on our own soil and keep it classic. Denim is a part of our heritage as we use it for the basis of American style. Layering plaid shirts and work boots evoke the sense of years past while also looking to great times ahead.
