the year of pouring out Hi I’m Chap Clark, Lead Pastor of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Table Magazine is a publication from our church where we get to highlight stories from those in our church community. In this issue, we’ve combined both stories as well as opportunities happening this summer that you won’t want to miss.

He is the King, and we serve him in great joy and praise, and our task is to share that with others. CHAP CLARK L E A D PA S T O R

So I invite you to read through the incredible stories in this issue from those in our church family, and to learn of upcoming opportunities this season. May we pour out! Chap Clark Lead Pastor, Head of Staff

TABLE | 2021

The theme in 2021 continues to be the “Year of Pouring Out” – a year where we do two things. First, that we remember who we belong to and whose we are. May we filter through the ways we think church is supposed to be, and see that church is simply about a group of people that recognize we’re all in need of God’s love and mercy. May Jesus transform us and change us from the inside out by his Spirit. Second, that we remember that the reason he redeemed us was to invite us to participate in his reign and his creative intent to restore all things that are broken. He is the King, and we serve him in great joy and praise, and our task is to share that with others.

the new normal LISA FRANK

There was a sign posted on the Choir Room door. Men and women approached, eyeing the message. Slowly they read, “Sanctuary Choir Rehearsal Cancelled Tonight.” Then, the news sinking in, each of them wandered back to their cars, pondering the effects this latest news would have on their lives. Never in their wildest dreams could they have foreseen that not only would choir rehearsal be cancelled for that night, but for the year to come! “Normal,” for the St. Andrew’s Sanctuary Choir, was gathering each Thursday at 7:00 p.m. to practice new music for future Sundays and to fine-tune music for the coming Sunday. “Normal” was talking, eating and laughing together. “Normal” was praying with and for each other. And most importantly, “normal” was leading worship together on Sundays. What would a “New Normal” look like?

Jim Delzer, a faithful member of Sanctuary Choir, came up with an idea to help us continue meeting and praying as a small group. He not only offered to set up a Zoom time, he also committed to be the leader of a Bible Study on Thursday nights for choir members and anyone they’d like to invite. Now, over a year later, this group continues to meet weekly for study, prayer, and jokes. This “New Normal” doesn’t include singing or eating together, but the study of God’s Word has fed our souls and put a song in our hearts. Through this altered reality, friendships have been cultivated and strengthened. We are thankful for the way these virtual meetings have helped draw us together!

“In college and my early career, I had the opportunity to work alongside seasoned studio musicians…I even sat in on rehearsals with the Los Angeles Philharmonic! It was musically exhilarating, but it also came at a critical time in my life after losing my dad in high school. These musicians gave me care and direction when I needed it most.” As St. Andrew’s is a venue for world-class talent in the staff and worship team, it only makes sense that this is a wonderful opportunity for the musicians here to make a similar impact on young artists. As Joe says, “from the beginning of any of my programs, mentorship from professional artists is a key element”. Even though Cristina’s goal is to nurture a solid musical foundation for his students, he is also committed to developing the whole person. “Working with kids week to week, you get a real sense of what’s going on in their lives —the good stuff, and the brutal stuff. Working with kids week to week, you get a real sense of what’s going on in their lives — the good stuff, and the brutal stuff.

Positive success stories abound with Joe and his students over the last 10 years. “It’s been a privilege to help these students prepare for university, get them scholarships, instruments and equipment. I’ve even hired some of my students on the tech team. The real-world experience makes the difference.” The initial offering of the SACI program is the SACI Rhythm ensemble, which is a group of about 25 students from his Santa Ana program who have been working with Joe online during the Covid restrictions. The next step is to recruit for a youth orchestra, for students grades 5-8. The wider vision is to offer instruction in video production, film making, cooking, dance… anything creative, as the name implies. “As we are in the process of reopening, a June launch for live instruction should be right around the corner.” In Joe’s words, “My call is to find a creative and life-changing way to bring the world of music and faith together - to create

In March 2020, Kathryn became a mother for the first time in San Francisco, away from family, and days before the COVID lockdown began. In the following months, she and her family packed up and moved to Costa Mesa to be closer to family and friends in their hometown. Since their move, Kathryn has graciously opened her home to a Tribe small group full of working mothers, most of whom had never been to a Tribe meeting before. Each meeting she provided beverages, snacks, and blankets as the group met outside around her firepit. She has led the group in small talk conversation to

They say it takes a whole village to raise a child, and we love being YOUR village! Every week, a group of people like you and me gather together to help teach our children what it means to trust in Jesus. This team of people creates crafts, leads crazy dances, and plays on the playground to show the love of Christ every time one of our kids steps onto campus. Two of our high school volunteers, friends Savannah Stefani and Renee Hays, have been volunteering with St. Andrew’s for five and four years, respectively. They’ve continued volunteering throughout COVID and have been a part of our weekend children’s worship experiences every week. Savannah loves volunteering because “each kid is unique and [she] love[s] to connect with them.” Renee says that “being able to connect and teach them about Jesus is such an amazing thing to do and be a part of.” Savannah recently shared about a girl who came out of her shell one Wednesday night. She started shy, but as the night went on, she became more comfortable and jumped right in with the other kids. Savannah says that “these cute moments show how much it means to kids to be able to talk about what they love and gain social skills of talking/playing with other kids.” We’re so thankful for them and for each person in our community who has gone above and beyond for our kids this past year. We couldn’t do it without them!

“Being surrounded by Jesus-loving peers has been essential to my growth as a Christian. Coming in as a very new Christian in November of 2019, I learned a great deal from the wide variety of experiences and passions found in the [Young Adults] group. With many of the group members coming from a theology background and pursuing careers in ministry, the group has a deep knowledge of the Bible, which has been an incredible resource as I read through some of

the more challenging passages for the first time. The group also shares an incredible musical talent, and while it has become clear that my gifts lie elsewhere, I have gained a true appreciation for the power of worship. One of my mentors always says: ‘You are what you eat, what you read, and who you’re around.’ Well, we eat pizza, read the Bible, and I wouldn’t want to be around anyone else. If you’re looking to get involved in Young Adults, don’t just dip your toe in the water; dive in headfirst. Get coffee with people from the group, help with events, see if there are other activities you can do at the church. The more I get involved, the more I get out of the group.” JACK THOMPSON

TACO TUESDAYS June 1 - August 10 Calling all young adults! Every Tuesday this summer, we’ll be grabbing tacos and hanging out together as a community. We’ll try a new, local spot (or try our hand at making our own tacos!) each week. All are welcome! Email Troy at troyd@sapres.org for more info about where we’ll eat each week.

COME JOIN A CONNECT GROUP! Connect Groups are groups that gather together for the sake of building community. You might want to join/start a connect group with others who like to do the same things as you, such as: playing board games, surfing, drinking coffee, or chillin at The Lab! Most families tell us they come to St. Andrew’s because they want to be KNOWN. Each student is not just a number, rather, they are real people who we care and love. Our focus this summer is to go deep by going “small-group.” We recently took one small group of middle school boys with some of their dads up to the mountains. The guys started by taking the aerial tram up to San Jacinto Wilderness, where they hiked a few miles to their camping spots. The hike was strenuous, and one of the dads remarked how proud he was of the boys for finishing it and overcoming something they didn’t think they would finish. Once they were there, they set up their tents, made some dinner, and learned about what it means to be godly men. From learning to tie knots, to respecting women, to how to read the Bible, the group had a great time. This is an example of the kinds of events and trips we are already having, and we would love to take YOUR student on the next one.

SUMMER FUN EVENTS We have 10+ small groups currently meeting throughout the week. Contact us to get your student plugged into an existing group, or we can create a new one with their friends. Events this summer will be focused on meeting students in their squads and intentionally talking about all aspects of life.

The Wednesday Night Cooking Team continued to serve our community even though we were unable to gather for our Wednesday Night dinners. When the Covid ‘shut down’ first occurred, the team was able to donate the perishable goods to the St. Andrew’s Food Pantry, blessing many families with healthy groceries. They would not let the food go to waste! As restrictions began to be lifted, ministry partner, NorthEast of the Well (NEW) began to have some groups meet in person. Once the groups began, NEW reached out to see if St. Andrew’s might be able to bless the groups with a healthy meal. The Wednesday Night Cooking Team stepped in to meet that need. Being able to gather together to bless others with “home cooked” meals was life-giving to the team and a tremendous blessing to the NEW groups meeting. The WND Cooking Team blessed three different NEW groups with meals twice a month; both dinner and dessert, from October 2020 – May 2021. The Wednesday Night Cooking Team was blessed in being a blessing to others!
