Sports and Cultural Awards Blazer and Colour Criteria
St Andrew’s College Sports and Activities Awards All sports and activities offered in any one year will be considered for Blazer and Colour awards if standards have been prepared by individual co-ordinators and these have been presented to and accepted by the Awards Committee. A Certificate of achievement may be awarded to students who perform successfully in sports or activities outside the College but not offered by the College. Students that represent New Zealand in any sport or cultural activity will be eligible for a New Zealand representative badge.
BLAZER AWARD The Blazer Award is a service award for Secondary School students. Students require two years of service to any given sport or activity in the Secondary School and are regular members of a College first team which competes against first teams from other schools or for students who compete regularly as individuals at a top level for the College in inter‑club or inter-school competition or for students who have been members of the top performance group in drama, cultural, musical and other offered activities. Regular, may be taken as eight games, appearances, performances or days of competition as decided by the co-ordinator of an individual sport or activity. Where a team doesn’t have regular competition (e.g. athletics, swimming) awards may be made based on several years competing in the sport, qualifying times and/or outstanding performances for the team. If a student is new to the College, they must also have completed two years’ service to a sport or activity at Secondary School level and competed in an inter-Secondary School competition. Where there is more than one College team competing in a top-grade competition in sports such as badminton, squash, table tennis and tennis, members of all teams may be considered for Blazer awards providing that they are of an acceptable standard. A team’s record will be considered. This general introduction must however be read in conjunction with the special criteria for each sport or activity. In a sport or activity in which there is not any competition to be in the top team a nominee must have reached an acceptable standard of performance as assessed by the coach or manager. Normally an award would not be made to a student below Year 11 unless that student is considered exceptional in skill and contribution. A team’s record may also be considered.
COLOUR AWARD The Colour Award is for outstanding performance in a sport or cultural activity at a top College level. There are three prime considerations: 1. Provincial, regional or national representative selection at secondary schools level or higher (normally U18 but consideration may be given in special circumstances to U17). 2. The nominee must be recognised by his or her appearance and behaviour at practice and in competition and around the College as a totally acceptable role model for younger students. 3. Students are recognised by their coaches and sports coordinators as outstanding performers for St Andrew’s College in their sport or activity.
The criteria outlined in this booklet are guidelines only, and the awarding of Colours is not automatic.
Students who are involved in a sport or activity not offered by the College may be considered for a Colour award
if they excel in provincial, regional or national competitions at a top College level providing they are representing the College. The recipients of a Blazer Award will get the name of the sport or activity and the year of the award placed below the pocket in white. The recipients of a Colour Award will get the name of the sport or activity and the year of the award placed below the pocket in blue. The recipient will also be entitled to wear the colours tie and have embroidered (thistle) buttons on their blazer.
AWARDS COMMITTEE The committee comprises the Head of Values and Culture, Head of Co-curricular and up to four staff representatives. The role of the committee is to maintain standards and comparability amongst the various sports and activities and to make judgments on the nominations for awards.
