Niall McCumesty (University of Glasgow Company), Oyiza Momoh (Glasgow Queen Street Company), Sarah Pringle (Bearsden and Milngavie Company) and Tamara Stead (Dennistoun Company) joined colleagues from First Aid Africa and together they provided first aid training to individuals and organisations. The fab four also taught 13 enthusiastic and skilled people from across the county an extensive advanced first aid course to enable them to become first aid instructors. This means that in the future even the most remote communities can be reached and pupils taught in their own language. So far this group have taught over four hundred people from all walks of life how to be prepared in an emergency. The group worked with Ndhiwa Sub-County Police Force, instructing them on how to deliver effective first aid. Officers are often the first on the scene of road traffic accidents and it is vital they are able to deliver medical help quickly and with confidence.

BandAge15 has been a huge success and St Andrew’s First Aid is hoping to find further funding so schools in other parts of Scotland can benefit from this important training.
The second phase of the project is now in full swing and a handful of pupils from each of the schools are undertaking Peer Facilitation training so they will be able to cascade their skills down to other year groups.

22 year old Paul Juma became a fully qualified First Aider through the partnership with First Aid Africa and St Andrew’s First Aid. On his way to his training course he came across a serious road traffic accident. With no equipment he was able to treat major bleeding and leg fractures using plastic bags to protect from infection and Kangas (large sheets) as dressings. Paul said, “First aid has changed my life, we like it. Many thanks to St Andrew’s First Aid for spreading this wonderful help in Africa. Together we save lives!” The partnership between St Andrew’s First Aid and First Aid Africa has been extremely successful and reinforces the importance of everyone having first aid skills. Paul Juma

GO TEAM! St Andrew’s First Aid
AN AWARD WINNING TEAM! Tamara Stead from Dennistoun Company won a Volunteer Hero Award at this year’s East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action Awards. Despite only volunteering with St Andrew’s First Aid since November of last year, Tamara has already given up countless hours of her free time to ensure members of the public are safe whilst out at events.
“I feel honoured to have won a Volunteer Hero Award. I am only one of many volunteers who dedicate their time to help others in need and who also work hard to pass their life saving first aid skills onto others,” says Tamara.
A 3rd year medical student at the University of Glasgow, Tamara was one of the four St Andrew’s First Aid volunteers who went to Western Kenya this summer to work with the charity First Aid Africa. The skills Tamara taught local people are vital in communities where a hospital could be several days trek away and where ambulances are few and far between.
East Dunbartonshire Voluntary Action celebrates the achievements of volunteers in the area. The organisation held a celebratory lunch on 4 June at their offices in Kirkintilloch where Tamara was awarded with a certificate in recognition of her hard work. Congratulations Tamara from everyone at St Andrew’s First Aid!
Ellen is also a Badger and Cadet Leader and teaches young people from the area vital life-saving skills. Her years of selfless service mean that a part of Scotland which previously had no first aid provision,
now has this essential skill being taught within the community.
Ellen regularly gives up her free time to provide first aid cover at local events, keeping attendees safe whilst they are enjoying themselves. Congratulations to Ellen who is not only the Pride of Thurso but also the Pride of St Andrew’s First Aid!
Keith takes the plunge for profits In August volunteer Keith McCravey took the plunge and jumped 150ft off of the Titan crane in Glasgow - all in aid of St Andrew’s First Aid. A member of Glasgow Central Company, Keith raised over £500 for the charity surpassing his target of £300. “I didn’t really decide to do a bungee jump it was pretty much thrown at me! Another member of Glasgow Central Company (Jane Donnelly) had bought the bungee as a gift for one of her friends.
Her friend fell pregnant and so couldn’t do it so Jane asked if I would like to do it and try and raise some money as well. I was absolutely terrified waiting to jump. There was a group of six doing the jump and I was last to go, it was pretty scary standing at the top of the crane waiting on your turn,” says Keith. The money Keith raised will help us to continue to deliver the highest standards in first aid and help us teach more people across the country vital life-saving skills. Well done and thank you to Keith – should we put you down for a sky dive next year?
On yer bike!
Over July and August St Andrew’s First Aid ran three two day courses for volunteers who will be part of our national cycle patrol team. Volunteers from all over the country took part in the Cycle Patrol training course provided by qualified instructors from Cycling Scotland. Congratulations to all that passed and happy cycling!
St Andrew’s First Aid volunteer Stuart McEwan was shortlisted for the Active Volunteer Award at this year’s Fife Voluntary Action Awards. The Fife Voluntary Action Awards recognise and reward the effort of volunteers, organisations and community groups that are serving the people and communities of Fife. This year the awards took place in the Rothes Hall in Glenrothes on 1 June.
During a football game at Rugby Park in July volunteers from Cumnock and District Company had to deal with a rather unusual casualty.
Stuart has volunteered with St Andrew’s First Aid for over 20 years and has worked tirelessly to help his local community of Methil and Leven and East Neuk. As well as volunteering for St Andrew’s First Aid, Stuart was also a Leader with the Scout Association for over 10 years.
After a bit of a run around they managed to catch the seagull and discovered it had fishing gut entangled around its beak and a hook caught in the feathers at its throat. Georgette Fulton and her grandson Luke Fulton managed to help the bird and Luke was able to cut the fishing gut and set it free.
“I was really surprised when I found out I was shortlisted for the award but it was a nice surprise!” said Stuart.
A recipe for success: St Andrew’s First Aid and Sainsbury’s Dundee

Dedicated volunteer Ellen Murray was crowned the Pride of Thurso at a gala day in Caithness. Ellen is the Commandant of Thurso Company and was nominated for the Award by several people from the town. Ellen set up Thurso in 2001 and since then has helped countless people to learn vital first aid skills.

Stuart received a certificate for being shortlisted and felt honoured to be recognised for his volunteering work. Stuart is a member of North and East Fife Company and each year gives up countless hours of his free time to volunteer with the organisation. Well done Stuart, it’s great to see your hard work being recognised!
During the game they noticed a seagull attempting to fly but couldn’t. As it was walking across the park they noticed it had something hanging from around its neck. At the end of the game they decided to try and help the bird as it was obviously in distress.

In September, volunteers were given the opportunity to put their newly learned skills to use at Pedal for Scotland, Glasgow to Edinburgh bike ride. Well done to all involved!

Monifieth Company were celebrating the successful end to a year long partnership with Sainsbury’s Dundee when they got the good news that they had been chosen as the store’s local charity for another year. Throughout last year’s partnership, volunteers from Monifieth Company Final presentation of money raised last held can collections, packed bags, held year with Jim Byrne (Deputy Manager of Christmas competitions and demonstrated Sainsburys Dundee) and volunteers from St life-saving first aid skills in store. They also Andrew’s First Aid Monifieth Corps Company provided training for some of Sainsbury’s staff in basic first aid through community first aid sessions. The Sainsbury’s team organised a sponsored cycle, a quiz night, a Christmas Show and a football game, as well as donating money raised from the sale of carrier bags. The charity partnership raised much needed funds for St Andrew’s First Aid and members of Monifieth Company are looking forward to another successful year of fundraising.
Companies from Aberdeen provided first aid cover at the Run Balmoral Marathon back in April. The event was hugely successful and volunteers worked hard to keep everyone safe whilst they completed their mammoth run.
Going above and beyond the call of duty St Andrew’s First Aid would like to thank the following volunteers for their commitment to the organisation and for continually going above and beyond the call of duty to ensure events have cover in place: • Eddie Rice (Glasgow Central) • Lewis McDonald (Strathkelvin)
• Gary Penders (Glasgow Central) • Elizabeth Lillie (Bilston Glen)
From not only spending weekends away covering events hundreds of miles away to 30+ hours volunteering a week, these volunteers also have a great relationship with others and are often able to encourage those to attend events at short notice.

Introducing your Better Impact champions
ONE TEAM, ONE VISION St Andrew’s First Aid’s senior management team has completed a series of roadshows which covered the country and gave members a chance to hear first hand of some of the exciting developments that are taking place within, and planned for, the organisation.
Over the last few months we have been busy recruiting volunteers from up and down the country to be our Better Impact champions. Our champions got together at NHQ in Glasgow on 5 July for the Better Impact Champion Skills workshop. A computer lab was set up in our training pods and our champions Gemma Kerr, who led the got taken through all Better Impact skills workshop aspects of the system from signing in, to updating their personal information, signing up to events and logging their hours. They then had to solve a number of scenarios given to them at the end of the workshop which they all completed successfully. They are now ready and raring to go, to help support all our volunteers on using Better Impact and provide training to volunteers in their area. They will be contacting Companies in their area to arrange demonstrations and training.
Hitting the road!
Based firmly on the theme of “One team, One vision”, the changes outlined celebrate past achievements and build on St Andrew’s proud heritage, and will secure the organisation’s future by maximising opportunities to develop further the very broad range of events at which we provide first aid cover. Amongst the topics covered were the introduction of new uniforms, distribution of which has already commenced with additional new items due for roll-out later this year. These include new polo shirts, cargo trousers and hi-vis vests and weatherproof jackets. It was great to see so many of our volunteers at the roadshows and we hope that everyone who came along found the events interesting and informative.
Our trusty Dacia Duster clocked up a few miles

NHQ team bowled over by the neighbours St Andrew’s First Aid’s staff in Glasgow received an unusual invitation from the neighbours recently when the residents of the housing complex just across the road from National Headquarters challenged them to a bowling competition. The members of the Dundasvale Court Bowling Club came up with the novel way of extending a neighbourly hand of friendship, and a team of eight staff and members took to the green for what was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

The St Andrew’s team was led by Trustee Willie Cooper who said, “The Dundasvale residents couldn’t have been better hosts. They went to such great lengths to welcome us and given that not one of us had even thrown a bowl before, they were also extremely patient. We’d like to thank them very much for inviting us, as their neighbours, to get involved in the Dundasvale community in such a good fun way.” After the match, the final score of which no member of the St Andrew’s team was willing to disclose, the bowling club presented their visitors with an inscribed commemorative silver dish and such was the success of the day that the talk already is of this becoming an annual event.

New expenses process St Andrew’s First Aid’s Social Enterprise shortlisted for volunteers for two UK awards St Andrew’s First Aid Training & Supplies Ltd has been selected as finalist for two major accolades. The Social Enterprise arm of St Andrew’s First Aid, has reached the finals of this year’s UK Heart Safe Awards. They will now go head to head with nine other finalists from throughout the country for the title of Not for Profit Organisation of The Year 2015. This news comes soon after the announcement in July that the Social Enterprise are finalists in the Social Enterprise of the Year category of the Lloyds Bank National Businesses Awards.
and the provision of training right across the full spectrum of First Aid. Much of that training concentrates on dealing with sudden cardiac arrest.
The UK Heart Safe Awards are open to organisations throughout the country who have invested in creating “Heart Safe” environments through the provision of life-saving equipment and/or training; as well as to individuals who have saved lives at work or leisure.
Being nominated for this prestigious award is particularly relevant to us. It will help us to further raise awareness of the importance and value of First Aid training. I am especially delighted for the additional recognition this gives to our team for their hard work and dedication.”
St Andrew’s First Aid Training and Supplies Ltd Managing Director, Michelle Ferguson said, “Our business is actively involved in the supply of life-saving equipment including defibrillators
The winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony to be held on 9th October at Manchester’s Midland Hotel. Good luck to everyone involved!
St Andrew’s First Aid
St Andrew’s First Aid appreciates the skills and time donated by its volunteers on a regular basis and wants to support their volunteer journey and help ensure it is a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone. Following feedback that some volunteers were struggling to submit expenses claims, we have extended the time limit for submitting an expenses claim to 3 months. Announcing the change, St Andrew’s First Aid Head of Finance, Valerie Wilson said, “I would also like to take this opportunity to encourage all our members to claim their out of pocket expenses for duties so that we have a true picture of the costs of providing our services. We appreciate that as a way of further supporting the organisation, some of our members choose not to claim expenses. Should anyone wish to donate the value of their expenses and is a UK tax payer, they can increase their donation by 25% but at no extra cost to themselves. They can do this by claiming expenses and then donating the funds back. As a charity, St Andrew’s First Aid can reclaim 25p of tax on every £1 that is given if the donation is gift aided.” If you’re interested in supporting St Andrew’s First Aid in this way, please contact the marketing team who will record your gift aid declaration and provide the bank details and references you will need.
