The Trades House of Glasgow and St Andrew’s First Aid

From left to right: Alex Graham (Past Deacon of The Trades House), Hamish C Brodie (Deacon Convenor of The Trades House), Gary Penders (volunteer with St Andrew’s), Niall McCumesty (volunteer with St Andrew’s), Lynsey Neilson (Marketing and Fundraising Executive at St Andrew’s), Tommy McCallum (volunteer with St Andrew’s), Neil Ramsay (volunteer with St Andrew’s).

We have recently purchased a vital piece of first aid equipment thanks to a generous donation from The Trades House of Glasgow. Trolley beds are essential for our volunteers to continue to deliver the highest standards of first aid when covering events. Many of the trolley beds we currently use are coming to the end of their lifespan so we were absolutely delighted when The Trades House of Glasgow donated money for us to buy a new trolley bed for the Glasgow area. We’ve already put the trolley to good use; last summer it was used at Festival 2014 in Glasgow’s Merchant City and made a significant impact on how St Andrew’s First Aid volunteers went about their duties and administered help. It was also used at

Glasgow on Ice this winter where our volunteers put in an amazing 200 hours of service. Gemma Kerr, who is the office administrator at our Clydebank office and a first aid volunteer says, “The trolley bed is used in a practical sense all of the time when it is out on duty; casualties can use it to rest up if feeling faint or sick. It is also used to transport a casualty from the location of an accident/incident to our first aid posts at duties. We also treat casualties on the bed, i.e. it gives them somewhere to sit whilst cuts and the like are being treated.” We could not have purchased the trolley bed without the generous donation from The Trades House of Glasgow. The Trades House of Glasgow was established

in 1605 and benevolence has always been at the heart of the organisation. Each year it donates over £600,000 to deserving individuals and organisations across Glasgow and considerable resources are also devoted to general benevolent work. The money awarded to St Andrew’s First Aid came from the Commonweal Fund with monies to be put to any good or pious use which may tend to the advancement of the “commonweal” of the burgh. We would like to thank The Trades House of Glasgow for its donation and for helping us to continue to deliver the highest standards in first aid services. With the continued support of organisations such as The Trades House of Glasgow we really can make a difference and save lives.

A week to remember:

Scottish First Aid Week 2014 Scottish First Aid Week 2014 started in style with our first ever St Andrew’s First Aid flash mob! On Monday 24 November, staff and volunteers from the organisation performed a first aid themed flash mob at the top of Buchanan Street which demonstrated the recovery position and showed off a few dance moves! The flash mob was filmed by STV Glasgow who featured the performance on the Riverside Show that night and interviewed our Operations Director Jim Dorman and Trainer/ Assessor Frances Rooney. Resuscitation Annie even made an appearance when Frances showed the presenters how to perform CPR. The fun and fundraising didn’t stop there; on Tuesday staff at our National Headquarters took part in the Great St Andrew’s First Aid Bake Off. Contestants paid £2 to enter their cake and our many willing judges made a donation to taste their culinary creations. The Bake Off was a big hit raising over £30 and our winner Tara Docherty was presented with a voucher from Lakeland after her impressive Winter Wonderland inspired cake wowed the judges. On Tuesday night, three of the nominees for the Scottish First Aid Awards appeared on the Riverside Show to discuss the reasons for their nominations and to promote the importance of first aid. Scott Hannah, Oyiza Momoh and Mary McAuley all chatted with the presenters about the Scottish First Aid Awards and why they think having first aid skills is so essential.

Amy and Robert from East Kilbride visited St Andrew’s High School to give first aid talks and demonstrations

For three days during Scottish First Aid Week, St Andrew’s First Aid volunteers Colin Davey and John and Mary Hainey took part in can collections on Buchanan Street raising an impressive £151 between them. The Theatre Royal also agreed to hold a can

collection for us after each performance of ‘Jeeves and Wooster’ which raised £73. The flurry of activities continued throughout the week. Several schools across Scotland took part in a Glow Meet where they watched a first aid lesson and demonstration with a question and answer section at the end. This was a great opportunity for pupils to learn more about vital life saving skills and helped to promote the importance of everyone, young and old, having first aid knowledge. Our volunteers also ran community first aid sessions in several locations across the country. These free taster sessions meant people from the surrounding community could learn more about first aid and hopefully be inspired to enrol in a certificated first aid course in the future. On Facebook we ran a number of competitions where we gave away lots of different prizes including a first aid kit and St Andrew’s First Aid merchandise.

death for many casualties. The videos also celebrated the partnership between the two groups, as the Monifieth Company of St Andrew’s First Aid was lucky enough to be chosen as Sainsbury’s Dundee Charity of the Year. On the last day of Scottish First Aid Week, volunteers and Cadets in Inverclyde held a coffee morning in Lyle Kirk where there was lots of cakes and information about the organisation. Monifieth volunteers worked with Sainsbury’s, Dundee to create 5 first aid YouTube videos

Throughout the week we released first aid videos via social media which were filmed in Sainbury’s Dundee store with volunteers from the Monifieth Company of St Andrew’s First Aid. The videos aimed to highlight the fact that accidents can happen anywhere and good quality first aid delivered confidently can make a huge difference to the outcome and can ultimately mean the difference between life and

However the highlight of the week was undoubtedly the prestigious Scottish First Aid Awards which took place in The Thistle Hotel in Glasgow on Friday 28 November. The evening was a huge success and was filled with inspiring stories from all our worthy nominees. The Awards celebrated not just our volunteers but the many individuals who have used and promoted first aid either in their daily lives or in the workplace.

Turn the page to find out more about this sparkling celebration of first aid.

Chief Executive of St Andrew’s First Aid, Stuart Callison, says: “It was great to end Scottish First Aid Week on such a high note and I would like to thank everyone who got involved and helped us. This year’s Scottish First Aid Week is going to be hard to top but with your continued help and support, we know we can make next year’s even bigger and better.”

Scottish First Aid Awards Scottish First Aid Week once again drew to a spectacular close with the annual Scottish First Aid Awards which took place in the Glasgow Thistle Hotel. Sponsored by Physio Control and with over 250 people in attendance, the event has been growing each year and it is safe to say 2014 was better than ever. As always we had an inspiring line up of nominees for our 8 awards with businesses, individuals and volunteers from all over Scotland all nominated to win a prestigious award. Entertainment was provided by the phenomenal East Coast Boys and the Big Easy All Stars who both got guests to their feet for a dance!

Young First Aid Hero of the Year Award 2014 WINNER: Marc Edwards Whilst volunteering in Tanzania in 2013, Marc Edwards saved the life of a young girl who got into trouble whilst swimming in the water at Marangu waterfalls. Marc was 17 at the time and displayed

Also nominated: Christina Wright & Freya Cowan

Winner Scott Hannah with Chairman, Mr Rudy Crawford

The Douglas Bremner Special Commendation Award 2014 WINNER: Heather Seggie It has been suggested in the past that it would be a fitting tribute to the Corp’s much loved former Commandant in Chief, Dr Douglas Bremner, to name an award in his honour. This year we created the Douglas Bremner Special Commendation Award which is presented to someone to recognise a significant first aid achievement. Our first winner of this award is Heather Seggie who works with MacFarlan Smith, one of our shortlisted nominees. Whilst Heather herself wasn’t shortlisted, all of our judges felt, overwhelmingly, that she was the ideal winner for this award. Heather saved the life of her father, Ronald, following a Scotland International rugby match when he collapsed on the roadside outside Macfarlan Smith’s premises in Edinburgh. Heather had left her car in the company’s car park during the game and when they arrived back to collect the car, Ronald began having problems breathing.

“I wasn’t sure if he was having an asthma attack at that point as he is severely asthmatic but it became obvious in seconds that he had actually stopped breathing properly. A passer-by helped me to lay him down on the floor and we commenced CPR and mouth to mouth,” says Heather. The situation quickly became critical as Ronald went into cardiac arrest but luckily a colleague of Heather’s who was also returning from the rugby, ran and collected one of Macfarlan Smith’s AEDs. Heather attached the AED to her father whilst the passerby continued CPR. “The AED told me to administer a shock which I did and thankfully he started to breathe by himself instantly. Another passer-by was beside me at this point and he said that he had been told there was oxygen in one of the bags my colleague had brought out but that he couldn’t open it. I said there was scissors in the bag to cut the security tab. I thought on hindsight it was funny when

Winner Heather Seggie with Eleanor Bremner

he asked me how I knew this and I replied “It’s my bloody kit!” I was a wee bit stressed! I then assisted Dad’s breathing with the bag and mask till the ambulance arrived almost instantly.”

Young First Aider of the Year competition The St Andrew’s First Aid Young First Aider of the Year competition was once again highly successful and an excellent opportunity for our young people to showcase their first aid talents. The competition takes place each year at our National Headquarters with Cadets and Badgers from all over Scotland being invited to take part in a range of first aid scenarios. This year’s winners were:

Cadet Shona is Brave@Heart First Aid Cadet, Shona Chalmers, was queen of the castle when she attended the First Minister’s Brave@Heart reception on the 9 October 2014. Taking place in Edinburgh Castle, the reception celebrated people who have shown exceptional bravery. At the age of just 17, Shona is one of the most highly commended First Aid Cadets in Scotland and indeed the United Kingdom. On the way to first aid training one evening in 2013, Shona witnessed an elderly gentleman being hit by a car. While her mum attended to the casualty and waited on the ambulance arriving, Shona directed traffic to avoid a further incident and also prevented onlookers from becoming involved. During the incident Shona displayed courage and confidence beyond her years. She followed her first aid training and ignored the advice of onlookers to move the injured

gentleman onto his side, knowing that this could cause him further problems. Shona had the courage to follow her convictions and if she had not intervened then the situation could have become far more serious. Shona is completely dedicated to her volunteer duties within St Andrew’s First Aid. She is a member of the Bilston Glen Company and won the Young First Aid Volunteer of the Year award at the Scottish First Aid Awards in 2013. She also won the highest commendation possible at the St John Ambulance Grand Prior Competition. Her hard work and commitment mean she is a valued member of St Andrew’s First Aid and she is always willing to lend a hand when needed. Brave@Heart was set up by First Minister, Alex Salmond, in 2010 and recognises the bravery shown by workers from the emergency services and members of the public.

Glasgow University University of Glasgow Company recently recruited 15 new first aid volunteers and felt it was important for them to learn how to apply their training in real world environments. The Company also wanted to improve interagency working and prepare new recruits for working with various organisations. St Andrew’s First Aid works with many organisations including the British Red Cross at large events across Scotland so it is vital that all volunteers are adequately prepared for such work. Glasgow University Company decided to simulate a concert duty at ‘the Fire Hydrant Nightclub’ (our Cowcaddens training centre) with upcoming DJ Bandage and teen heartthrobs ‘The First Aid Boys’ alongside Glasgow University’s Red Cross volunteering group. A group of around 20 volunteers were put through their paces dealing with the after effects of fictitious drug ‘Party Monster’ as well as simulations of frequently met injuries at music events. This included everything from drunken behaviour right up to arterial bleeds and CPR. The volunteers felt it was a hugely beneficial event for both organisations and is a partnership that will be developed further in the future.

Introducing your Marketing and Fundraising team There have been many changes to our Marketing and Fundraising team over the last year and this is a great opportunity to introduce our amazing team. Everyone is looking forward to working with our volunteers in the coming year so that together, we can save lives. Ray Diggins

Leigh Burns

Ray joined the team in August 2014 and really had to hit the ground running with Scottish First Aid Week being just months later. It’s been a busy few months but he certainly no longer feels like the new boy!

Our new Community Fundraising Executive, Leigh Burns, is the charity’s first dedicated fundraiser and we’re really keen to see our fundraising activity grow this year. Leigh will focus on working in the community and with businesses, schools and universities – raising awareness of the need for good first aid delivered with confidence in an emergency and the need for funds to make our work possible.

Head of Marketing, Communications and Fundraising

Ray’s background lies predominantly in the commercial sector where he was previously Head of Marketing for two of Scotland’s largest privately owned companies but most recently has been based in London working in a similar role for a major UK charity. Ray works across all areas of Marketing, Communications and Fundraising and recently even tried his hand at a bit of presenting for the Scottish First Aid Awards!

Community Fundraising Executive

Leigh has a solid background in fundraising having previously worked with the Scottish Spina Bifida Association. She’s delighted to have joined St Andrew’s First Aid at such an exciting time for the organisation and can’t wait to get stuck in and meet our volunteers!

Laura Dennett

Suzanne Milne

Laura is another new addition to the team and will be working closely with the Corps to build on community fundraising streams. Additionally she’ll have responsibility for producing communications such as the Bulletin (the next one will be all hers!) and charity marketing activity.

Suzanne has been with us since July 2014, when she joined as a Scottish First Aid Week Events intern. She loved it so much (and we loved her so much!) that she decided to stay and became a full-time, permanent member of staff.

Marketing and Fundraising Executive

With a background in journalism, youth work and drama, Laura has a wealth of experience to bring to the role. You might be familiar with Laura as she has recently completed a successful internship with the charity. If you have any ideas for fundraising initiatives and events or simply don’t know where to start, give Laura a ring and she’ll talk things over with you and help you get your ideas off the ground.

Paul McGarry Marketing Manager

Paul works exclusively on the commercial side of the organisation and is responsible for the website, digital marketing and all commercial marketing activity. As November comes around he also lends a hand with the Scottish First Aid Awards with a focus on involving businesses who use us as their training provider. Paul is also a trained first aider so you might well see him out and about at events, providing first aid cover. He also has a keen interest in politics – look out for him on your ballot paper in the next election!

Marketing and Fundraising Administrator

As the Marketing and Fundraising Administrator, Suzanne is the new Raiser’s Edge Queen and is able to help with all of your fundraising material needs. Give her a call if you want to make sure all the funds you have raised are logged accurately, if you need collection buckets or if you want to do a bag pack in your local supermarket. Suzanne is a talented dancer (as you’ll know if you saw our First Aid Flash Mob!) and runs a Girls Brigade group in her spare time. She is full of energy and enthusiasm and ready for all that lies ahead in 2015.

Farewell to Lynsey Earlier in January we bid farewell to Lynsey who had been our Marketing and Fundraising Executive, Marketing and Fundraising Officer and Fundraising and PR Assistant over the past 2 years. Lynsey thoroughly enjoyed her time with the charity and has now gone on to combine her love of fundraising (and Raiser’s Edge!) with her education degree to fundraise for an international charity, specifically within educational establishments. She will miss working with the staff and volunteers at St Andrew’s First Aid but rumour has it she’s already angling for an invite to the Scottish First Aid Awards 2015!

Recognising our volunteers achievements New Year honour for Susan Working together to save lives We are always pleased when our volunteers are recognised by others for the amazing work and dedication they have for St Andrew’s First Aid. So we were delighted when we heard the news that long time St Andrew’s volunteer, Susan Swan, is being awarded the British Empire Medal as part of the New Year Honours List this year. Susan has volunteered with us since January 1972 and has always been a volunteer with Wellstood St Andrew’s Company where she is the Deputy Commandant. Susan has a staggering 40 years service with St Andrew’s and has given nearly 5000 hours of her own time as a volunteer. She has represented St Andrew’s at various events and has for many years attended meetings as Emergency Planning Officer and attended various ‘scenarios’ in this role. Susan also delivers first aid training annually to children at the local school and has helped many young people with the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. Volunteers like Susan are the life blood of St Andrew’s First Aid; year after year they dedicate hundreds of hours to the charity and are committed to providing the highest standards in first aid.

Newly merged Auchterderran & Kelty Company has had a successful first year covering many different duties. Their year culminated in a successful Project First Aid session led by volunteer, Felicity Brown. Members of the public participated in many practical sessions. They seemed to enjoy all aspects of the evening, including the tea and cake.

So congratulations Susan and well done from everyone at St Andrew’s First Aid. Remember to send us a picture of you at the palace!

Lauren Anderson, Shona Chalmers, Courtney Simpson from Bilston Glen and their Commandant Steven Clabby.

St John Ambulance competition winners Congratulations to Shona Chalmers and Lauren Anderson from Bilston Glen Company who won the Young Adult Championship at the St John Ambulance first aid competition in Blackpool last November. As well as winning the Championship award, Shona

was the highest scoring individual and Lauren was the second highest scoring individual with both girls winning a trophy. The day was a huge success with Courtney Simpson also of Bilston Glen Company winning runner up in the Cadet category. Well done to everyone involved and keep up the good work.

In remembrance As we look ahead to the new year, it is important to look back at the year past and remember those who are no longer with us. Our volunteers are vitally important to St Andrew’s First Aid and we would like to formally acknowledge their work and commitment to the organisation.

Youth Conference and First Aiders of the Year Competition (6-24 Years)

World First Aid day is on Saturday 12 September this year and it has been suggested as a potential date for the Youth Conference with the first aid competition being held the next day on Sunday 13 September. The venue and format is still to be confirmed but once we have more details we will let our youth members know. The conference will be a great chance to practice first aid skills so we hope lots of our young people will attend and enter the completion the following day. Booking forms will be sent to all youth volunteers and placed on the website in the near future, and if you are interested in attending please inform your Youth Leader as soon as possible.
