Dalziel High School annual Health Fayre Students of Dalziel High School recently celebrated their 19th annual Health Fayre and St Andrew’s First Aid was once again delighted to be in attendance. The normally quiet assembly hall was a hive of activity with pupils having their height, weight, BMI and peak flow checked, with the information being recorded on each individual’s health passport which is completed each year to gauge their rate of growth. Pupils were provided with a variety of information by organisations from sectors including dental health care, healthy eating, nail and hair care, health and fitness and of course, First Aid. Each year Dalziel High School invite a variety of organisations to exhibit and aims to provide pupils and staff alike with information and guidance on the importance of health and wellbeing. Volunteers from St Andrew’s First Aid Motherwell Company were on hand to demonstrate and showcase that even basic First Aid skills can make the difference between a life saved and a life lost. Pupils took part in demonstrations, learning potentially life saving
techniques such as how to administer CPR, how to place someone into the recovery position and what to do if someone is choking. Christine Sommerville, Deputy Commandant of Motherwell Company, was first inspired to learn First Aid after she witnessed her brother resuscitate her father after he suffered a heart attack. Thanks to her brother’s quick thinking and knowledge of First Aid, her father survived. Inspired by these events, Christine has now been a volunteer with St Andrew’s First Aid for over 26 years and can’t stress enough the benefits First Aid knowledge and skills can make.
We believe that every young person has the ability to make a real difference in their community. Through our Youth Development Group, children and young people have the opportunity to make new friends, develop confidence and obtain a sense of achievement in a safe and fun setting. Kaye and daughter Bonnie
FOLLOWING OUR ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN, SKYPARK ENROL FOR FIRST AID TRAINING In an emergency situation it is critical that basic First Aid is delivered with confidence. Every parent dreads a serious injury for their child and a knowledge of basic First Aid training could make a life-saving difference. From research it is known that Scottish parents are poorly equipped to deliver potentially life-saving First Aid to save their child in a medical emergency. 45% of Scottish parents would not be confident of knowing what to do if their 10 year old child was choking and the greatest fears have been identified as head injury, choking, drowning, and burns. Having seen our recent advertising campaign expressing these sentiments, a group from Skypark enrolled for a Baby and Child First Aid class. Skypark is based in Glasgow and is a thriving business community of 3,500+ people in office, retail and academic accommodation. The group thoroughly enjoyed the class which is ideal for anyone wishing to gain knowledge and experience of First Aid for babies and children. The course content includes: accidents in the home/nursery; recovery position; CPR and treatment for shock; disorders of breathing; hypothermia;
disorders of consciousness; wounds and bleeding; injuries to bones and soft tissue; burns and scalds; poisons and miscellaneous conditions. One high profile celebrity who recently undertook our training course was Kaye Adams and her daughter Charly. Before taking the course Kaye had first-hand experience of dealing with a terrifying moment when her five year old daughter Bonnie turned pale and fell from a chair during a visit to the hairdressers. “When Bonnie collapsed I had no idea what to do,” said Kaye. “As a parent you always have a niggling worry at the back of your head that you might not be able to act in the event of an emergency. You always think it’s not going to happen to you, but things do happen and I hated feeling so inadequate.” If you would like to take part in a St Andrew’s First Aid training course visit http://www.firstaid.org.uk/training.

Spring clean your First Aid kit Before starting on any spring cleaning efforts – at home or work – perhaps it might be an idea to review the contents of your First Aid kit? A First Aid kit is essential all year round, but before beginning any clean up or stock check it may just be worth checking all contents to see if any items are out of date or even worse, not there at all. Accidents happen, and often when you least expect it, so be prepared for any eventuality and instead of scrambling around for the right materials after a scrape, burn or sprain, make a little time to ensure the items you need are in your First Aid kit. Stewart Simpson, Training Manager at St Andrew’s First Aid said: “It’s an alarming fact that almost 80% of people lack the knowledge and confidence to carry out basic First Aid. The Scottish Ambulance Service has a target response time of eight minutes – which means many treatable conditions could prove fatal without prompt on-the-spot action. Yet it needn’t be this way. Often, the most basic of First Aid training and a First Aid kit can mean the difference between life and death.
So this Spring we are asking people to take the time to make sure their First Aid kit is well stocked and if possible book onto a First Aid course so that you are prepared should the worst happen.” St Andrew’s First Aid stock a range of First Aid kits from compact kits for the small workplace (featuring a reliable selection of First Aid essentials including dressings, bandages and tape) through to more comprehensive large kits for major employers (including foil blanket and resuscitation device). One of our popular and best selling First Aid kits is our On The Go Small First Aid Kit (fantastic value for money at £3.20). This is the ideal First Aid kit for travel, home or leisure and can be stored neatly in the car, caravan, backpack, suitcase or kitchen cupboard. It contains the basic items to help treat any minor injury, from cuts and grazes to sprains and strains.

Alloa Half Marathon
Our Clackmannan and Perth Companies recently joined forces to provide First Aid cover at the Alloa half-marathon 2013. First run in 1983, the Alloa half marathon is organised by the Alloa Round Table and approximately 2,500 runners follow a scenic course, with long flat stretches along the foot of the Ochil Hills. The weather was a bit dull and miserable but the smiles from our First Aiders cheered the runners on. Well done guys!
Kirkintilloch and East Kilbride are now safer places to be! A new batch of First Aiders have been awarded their St Andrew’s First Aid Standard First Aid certificates. To receive their certification the First Aiders successfully completed a 12 week Standard First Aid course, in which they were assessed on all areas of First Aid from bandaging to incident management right through to CPR. Susan Adamson, Commandant of St Andrews First Aid East Kilbride Company, said: “We’re delighted to have trained more people in First Aid. We believe First Aid skills are essential, because you never know when you’re going to need to use them. We hope that our new First Aiders keep their skills up, and would even consider becoming a member to put their newly acquired First Aid skills to good use.” As well as being qualified in all areas of First Aid, they are now eligible to join the volunteer Corps of St Andrew’s First Aid, providing First Aid at a wide variety of events all across Scotland, from concerts, SPL/SFL football, to music festivals and community events.

In a crisis it is vital that First Aid is delivered with confidence and Scottish First Aid Week is about encouraging people throughout Scotland to learn First Aid skills which could help in an emergency and even save a life. No one should die because they needed First Aid and didn’t get it. It is surprising just how often knowing even the most basic First Aid can make a difference to a difficult situation. Inevitably it is the public who are first at the scene of an accident and those vital few minutes could make all the difference before the emergency services arrive. Despite the difference it could make, fewer than one in four Scots (23%) are trained in the specialist skills required to administer First Aid. Please take the time to learn First Aid.
We’re on the Check Out! We are delighted to once again have been chosen by ebay to be their Check Out Charity for our Scottish First Aid Week. For one week only, buyers will be asked if they would like to donate £1 or more to St Andrew’s First Aid to support our charity. This feature is part of the ebay for charity programme, which provides an easy way for buyers and sellers to support us. Sellers can choose to donate a percentage of any sale to St Andrew’s First Aid and add Gift Aid to their donation. So please remember to CHECK US OUT on ebay.

Elliot was a 2012 winner. Last year he was at the poolside, when he became aware that a two year old baby who was with his mum was in difficulties. Elliot rushed over to the mum, who handed over her son who was by this time limp and lifeless to Elliot. He took the baby and calmly called for assistance and proceeded to resuscitate the baby. By the time help arrived Elliot had managed to get the baby’s airway clear and breathing again. There is no doubt that Elliot’s prompt action saved this baby’s life, very impressive for a 21 year old responding to his first emergency.

THANK YOU A cheque for £200 donated by Asda in Clydebank will help St Andrew’s First Aid continue to provide its vital First Aid services in the local community. Our volunteers from Clydebank said a big thank you to Asda when they were personally presented with a cheque. The money will go towards purchasing valuable First Aid equipment which could be used to save lives. St Andrew’s First Aid was chosen through the Asda Community Life ‘Tokens’ programme. We were one of three charities that customers could vote for with their tokens, which are given out at every transaction with an extra token per child and double if a customer uses their own bags. Thanking Asda for their support Lynsey Neilson, Fundraising and PR Assistant, said: “We were really delighted to have been chosen by Asda customers as their charity of choice. This demonstrates the awareness that the local community has of our charity and will allow us to continue our vital work. At St Andrew’s First Aid we believe that no one should die because they needed First Aid and didn’t get it. This donation will help us deliver excellence in everything First Aid to the people of Clydebank and the West of Glasgow.” St Andrew’s First Aid volunteers provide First Aid cover at a range of events in the Clydebank area including rugby matches at the High School of Glasgow.

Volunteers’ Week 1st - 7th June 2013
What is Volunteers’ Week? Volunteers’ Week is an annual event, from 1 – 7 June 2013, which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK. The week plays a huge part in raising the profile of volunteers who regularly contribute to society, whilst inspiring others to get involved too. From showcasing new campaigns and different volunteering roles to providing taster sessions and team challenges, the week aims to inspire more people to donate time to their communities.
Who can take part? Every one of our volunteers can take part in Volunteers’ Week as organisations are encouraged to get involved and join in the celebrations. How you decide to celebrate is up to you. Have a party, have a barbeque, have a recruitment fair, have a day out, do more volunteering, but most of all have fun!
What will you do? There are many ways to fundraise, but here are some simple ideas for raising money and having some fun with your family, friends and colleagues. • Organise a lunchtime carwash at a local supermarket or workplace which has a car park. • Hold an office springtime picnic lunch. You could try selling slices of cake for a £1 or individual portions of homemade soup with fresh bread. • Hold an auction/raffle of promises where friends/
colleagues volunteer their skills; for example in painting, typing, babysitting, lawn-mowing or hair-dressing. • Organise a ‘guess the weight’ competition at your workplace or local community centre where people can estimate the weight or the number of sweets in a jar.

LOCAL FUNDRAISER SHARES TOP TIPS Kieran Hutcheon, one of our volunteers in the Grampian Executive area took up the fundraising challenge for Scottish First Aid Week and now shares his top tips for raising funds in a difficult climate. Created to raise awareness of First Aid and enhance our work in Scotland, the inaugural Scottish First Aid Week took place in November 2012. It is surprising just how many times knowing even the most basic First Aid can make a difference to a difficult situation and could help make the difference between a life lost and a life saved. Inevitably it is the public who are first at the scene of an accident and those vital few minutes are so important before the emergency services arrive. The campaign theme for 2012 was ‘You kiss them every day. If you had to give the kiss of life, would you know how?’ and encompassed an effective and thought provoking advertisement enabling people to consider their abilities to help loved ones in an emergency situation. Janine Ewen, Corps Development Officer for Grampian and the North of Scotland, suggested Kieran share his fundraising abilities after impressively fundraising for the charity on his own and raising £80. Commenting on Kieran’s enthusiasm, Janine said: “Fundraising is a tough field, especially in the current economic recession. There are huge financial constraints on businesses and charities/third sector
organisations are facing harsh cuts. As the leading First Aid charity in Scotland we rely heavily on the generosity of the public, but just as importantly on our volunteers to give up their time to help us fundraise together. “ Kieran has really impressed me, with his keen enthusiasm to get involved and for organising his time well around the commitments in his life.” Kieran states “To support Scottish First Aid Week, I decided to collect money in town, on a Thursday evening. I tried to approach people in a kind way, and ask if they had heard about St Andrews First Aid, and if they would be interested in making a donation. I tried my best to answer any questions on First Aid they had. “I also took a box of badges to sell at work, and also sold them to friends and family. Some tips I’d give on fundraising would be to prepare, set aside time to do so, and to wrap up warm - something I didn’t do! Despite a chill in the air, Kieran gave it his best and St Andrew’s First Aid is hugely grateful for the money raised and for Kieran sharing some of his top tips.

Draft guidance for businesses ahead of changes to First Aid regulations On 18 February 2013 the Health and Safety Executive announced changes to the 1981 First Aid Regulations stating that: ‘employers will be free to employ a training provider of their choice, subject to reassuring themselves that the training provider is competent and that training provided is likely to deliver competent First Aiders.’
Additional guidance provided by the HSE has stated that: ‘You may also find ‘ready-made’ assurance when considering the Voluntary Aid Societies (St John Ambulance, British Red Cross and St Andrew’s First Aid). ‘The Voluntary Aid Societies are together acknowledged by HSE as one of the standard setters for currently accepted first-aid practice ...in so far as they relate to topics covered in the FAW and EFAW training courses. ‘The Voluntary Aid Societies also work to similar principles of assessment, and employ a similar hierarchy of policies and processes to ensure training quality standards, to those of regulated qualifications.’ Changes are proposed to First Aid Regulations to remove the requirement for the HSE to approve First Aid training providers. Subject to HSE Board and ministerial approval, the anticipated changes to the Regulations are expected in October 2013.
Don’t get caught out with your First Aid Training. You are guaranteed a safe and reliable service with St Andrew’s First Aid.
The HSE has published new draft guidance to help employers assess the First Aid requirements within their specific workplace. The HSE has also produced separate guidance on how to select an appropriate First Aid training provider. Both can be found on the HSE website http:// www.hse.gov.uk/firstaid/proposed-changes-first-aidregulations.htm Until the changes take effect, the current regulation continues to apply - all First Aid training for the purposes of First Aid at work provision must be carried out by an HSE approved training provider or a training centre for an Ofqual/SQA accredited awarding organisation supported by the HSE to deliver such training (these are listed on the HSE First Aid web pages). Similarly, the current edition of L74, ‘First Aid at Work’ (Approved Code of Practice and Guidance) will remain valid and in force until new legislation and associated guidance takes effect.
Comments on the guidance can be sent to firstaidconsultation@hse.gsi.gov.uk
St Andrew’s First Aid will continue to provide the highest quality of training provision to meet your needs and we look forward to seeing you at one of our venues across Scotland or visiting you at your place of work.

PUT SAFETY FIRST There were 9,551 reported injuries to employees in Scotland last year and 1.7 million working days were lost due to work related injury and ill-health. Twenty workers were fatally injured at work but this figure does not include deaths of people who became ill at work and could have been saved by First Aid intervention. St Andrew’s First Aid is a market leader in the provision of First Aid in Scotland, training over 20,000 people every year. We are well known First Aid providers within Scotland where of course, safety is paramount. Our organisation is proud to have trained huge numbers of personnel to the high HSE approved standard of First Aid at Work. Skills learned through St Andrew’s First Aid Training and Supplies Ltd courses are invaluable for those in the workforce – when those little (and unfortunately sometimes big) emergencies happen. Providing this high level of training to your employees could positively impact on their wellbeing as well as possibly saving a life. We provide a variety of workplace courses available in venues all over Scotland or even in your workplace.
RECOGNITION The main causes of slips, trips and falls in the workplace are: • Uneven floor surfaces or changes in levels. • Unsuitable floor coverings. • Wet floors. • Poor housekeeping or trailing cables. • Poor lighting.
YOUR AIMS Employers have a duty to make sure they protect people in the workplace from the risks of slips, trips and falls but everyone can help to avoid such accidents. Reducing the risks is usually easy, costs little or no money and often has other benefits.
CAUTION Slips and trips are the most common of workplace hazards and make up over a third of all major injuries. Over 10,000 workers suffered serious injury because of a slip or trip last year.
With a national team of Trainers the company is able to offer courses wherever there may be a demand. Courses include HSE Approved ‘First Aid at Work’, ‘Fire Marshal Training’, ‘Moving and Handling – Principles’, and the HSE Approved ‘Emergency First Aid at Work’. In an industry where accidents can be catastrophic without adequate First Aid provision, it is vital to equip staff with these skills. In addition to offering First Aid courses, the organisation also provides First Aid supplies to keep companies and individuals well stocked in case of accidents or emergencies. Supplies range from bandages and First Aid kits to Biohazard Clean Up kits and Automated External Defibrillators, all of which have their place in a construction environment. St Andrew’s First Aid Training and Supplies Ltd has a strong reputation for quality and innovative learning and teaching methods. The organisation believes that the First Aid training of employees should not be seen as a legislative burden but as part of their commitment to corporate social responsibility and community resilience. By selecting St Andrew’s First Aid Training and Supplies Ltd as your First Aid supplier of choice you will be supporting this belief as all profits are gift-aided back to the charity arm.

Barking mad First Aid volunteers provided cover at the much loved Dogmanay Sleddog races, presented by Edinburgh’s Hogmanay and the Scottish Sleddog Society. Held on 1 January 2013 at Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, crowds were invited to get up close to the racing action and take part in the afternoon entertainment. Edinburgh cannot rely on snow, so teams of Alaskan Malamute, Samoyed and Siberian Huskies from all over Scotland pulled custom-made threewheeled rigs around a set course. The rigs are essentially tricycles which are pulled rather than pedalled. There were many dog breeds present with some participating in the races, others in the Waggiest Tail competition or the more serious Good Behaviour competition. The most common type of dog present was the Husky, but there were many others attending that belonged to visitors so there were a whole lot of wagging tails and no disagreements on the day.
Fundraising ceilidh a Sporrandipity success
Pam Addison, Secretary of The Scottish Sleddog Society said: “Dogmanay is a great opportunity for everyone who owns a sled dog and isn’t a member of a club to come and get some guidance and support about the welfare of these breeds, and to fully enjoy these wonderful dogs. And of course, it is a great excuse for us all to have some fun.” Our First Aiders remarked that the event was a most enjoyable duty. They said: “The husky puppies were a big hit with the crowds and when someone asked about buying one they were told the cost was between £600 and £1,000. At the start the dogs were eager to race and tended to pull towards each other then straighten out. One father and son on different rigs had a swapping of barked comments and in another race the leads got tangled up and needed rescuing. The man that straightened it out had to run in front of the rig for the rest of the race! He got a great cheer and the kilted commentator had some very amusing comments to make. As it was a fun family day times were unimportant and several youngsters tried to drive one dog. We really enjoyed the day.”
On Friday 30 November 2012, our Edinburgh, Lothian and Borders Executive Committee held a ceilidh to raise funds for Scottish First Aid Week. With generous gifts from local businesses, contacts and volunteers, funds were boosted to the tune of £337.50. The dancing took place at the Corn Exchange with ‘Sporrandipity’ leading the music – a Ceilidh band containing two of our own volunteers no less! A beautiful buffet was put on by the nephew of another volunteer and there were so many generously donated prizes to be won in the raffle that it took over half an hour to draw it! Games such as guess the weight of the cake and guess the name of the teddy bear proved popular and a final throw the pennies at the whiskey bottle helped the fundraising total creep up nicely. Laura, Moira and Rachel from the Edinburgh Office would like to thank all the volunteers who helped put the event together and those who came along and entered into the spirit of it all. They have already been asked if this will become an annual event so watch this space.

Gift Aid
3
If you are a UK taxpayer, you can make your donation worth more with Gift Aid. For every pound you give to us, we get an extra 25p from the Inland Revenue. All you need to do is check the statement below and tick the box. To qualify for Gift Aid, what you pay in income tax or capital gains tax must at least equal the amount we will claim in the tax year. I declare all gifts of money that I’ve made to St Andrew’s First Aid in the past six years and all future gifts of money that I make from the date of this declaration are Gift Aid donations. Please notify us if you want to cancel this declaration, change your name or home address or no longer pay sufficient tax on your income and/or capital gains.
The Direct Debit Guarantee This Guarantee is offered by all banks and building societies that accept instructions to pay Direct Debits. If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit, St Andrew’s First Aid will notify you ten working days in advance of your account
being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request St Andrew’s First Aid to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request. If an error is made in the payment of your Direct Debit by St Andrew’s First Aid or your bank or building society, you are entitled to a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your bank or building
society. If you receive a refund you are not entitled to, you must pay it back when St Andrew’s First Aid asks you to. You can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by simply contacting your bank or building society. Written confirmation may be required. Please also notify St Andrew’s First Aid.
