St Andrew’s First Aid Annual Report 2011

Chief Executive’s Report Our aim is to deliver excellence in everything First Aid to Scotland and it is pleasing to report that we have continued to make good progress over the past year, despite the very challenging economic climate.

We are acutely aware that there is still much to do, to ensure a greater awareness both of First Aid in Scotland, and of the role that St Andrew’s First Aid has to play!

In the course of 2010/11, we carried out a major refurbishment of our National Headquarters in Glasgow, and completed our Governance Review, resulting in a new Supplemental Royal Charter and streamlined Board structure. I would like to thank all those retiring as Trustees for their sterling work on behalf of St Andrew’s First Aid.

A recent survey has shown that almost 80% of people lacked the knowledge and confidence to carry out basic First Aid, perhaps unaware that with a target response time of eight minutes for the Scottish Ambulance Service, many treatable conditions could prove fatal without prompt on-the-spot action.

Towards the end of the year the Board of Trustees agreed plans to develop a Business Plan for our commercial activities and for a renewed focus on developing our Volunteer Corps.

Page 02

Meanwhile, four in five businesses also admitted to shortcomings in their First Aid training and cover, resulting in over 1000 fines being issued last year alone. The Board and Management Team of St Andrew’s First Aid have an ambitious programme of activity planned over the next year, to meet these challenges, including:

• A national campaign to raise awareness of St Andrew’s First Aid and the benefits of a knowledge of First Aid; • Development of a commercial trading subsidiary; • A ‘Valuing Volunteers’ Strategy to thank our current Volunteers and recruit new members; • Development of our fundraising income streams; •Improvements to finance and administration systems to enhance the effectiveness of our organisation. We thank everyone who has played their part in helping St Andrew’s First Aid to save lives in Scotland. With your continued support we expect to achieve even more in the years to come.

First Aid Training As Scotland's leading provider of First Aid training services, we teach vital life-saving techniques to thousands of people each year. During 2010/11 we trained 18,729 people, a reduction of just over 8% on the previous year – a downward trend that is unsustainable in the long term. There is no doubt that we have been hard hit by the difficult economic climate and that we need to ensure our commercial activities are run in the most business like way. To support this we now have a plan in place to separate our commercial activities from those of our charitable activities from April 2012. The aim is to enable the organisation to maximise the potential in commercial markets whilst actively pursuing new opportunities. To support this strategic decision, six additional full time trainers have been recruited to operate throughout

Page 08

Scotland and training administration is being centralised to improve the quality and consistency of service. During the past year we have undertaken much of our commercial training in alternative premises due to the refurbishment of the National Headquarters building in Glasgow. This process went fairly smoothly and in January we were honoured when our Patron, The Princess Royal officially re-opened the building. Following the building works, our students are training in a modern setting with the latest AV equipment and we now have the flexibility to have one large training room or three smaller rooms, as well as our main training room. This will enable us to increase the variety of courses offered and hopefully accommodate an increase in student members in the future. We are also aiming to move to new premises in Edinburgh during 2012.

First Aid Supplies St Andrew’s First Aid provide a comprehensive range of First Aid kits, consumables and training equipment to meet any need and, as a not for profit organisation, all surplus trading income is reinvested in our charity. There is no doubt that the past year has been a challenging one for the Supplies Department. Although the Headquarter shop remained open during the renovation of the building, the extensive scaffolding and site works inevitably had an impact on passing trade. During the year the range of our own branded products increased as we introduced eight different types of bandages and three different types of kits: a branded First Aid Kit, branded Eye Station Kit and branded Catering Kit.

Page 10

An online website shopping cart went live at the end of the year, so that we now have the ability to sell our own branded products alongside a broad range of First Aid equipment. The shopping cart is available to both our volunteers and commercial customers and we anticipate that sales from the online facility will increase through the current year. There has been a great deal of work on the volunteer uniform review, including a survey of volunteer views and requirements. The result of this is that we now have a clear indication of the style and quality of our future uniform, which we anticipate that our Volunteer Corps will be wearing in 2012.

Case Study Tracy Jones – Volunteer First Aid training can help at home, work or in the community. One of our First Aid volunteers, Tracy Jones, saved the life of a baby girl found floating face down in a pond. Mother of three, Tracy from Dundee, was on holiday when she heard another family’s desperate screams for help. Their 19 month old daughter had gone missing from outside their caravan and was found floating lifelessly in a nearby fishing pond.

Tracy immediately rushed to help and used CPR to bring the youngster back to life. Recalling the day Tracy said: “When I took part in the St Andrew’s First Aid course I remember hoping I would never have to use the life-saving skills I was being taught. But when I saw that little girl, I was so glad I knew what to do. I don’t know how long she had been in the water but she wasn’t breathing, there were no signs of life at all and she was really, really pale. She looked dead and her parents were understandably hysterical. They didn’t know what to do, so I just rushed over and took the wee girl from her dad’s arms. I gave the little girl five ‘rescue breaths’ before giving her CPR. I knew her heart had started beating again when she starting making crying sounds and coughing water up from her lungs. It was wonderful when I found out later that the wee girl is now absolutely fine.”

First Aid Volunteering As the leading provider of First Aid services in Scotland we depend on the work of our dedicated volunteers to provide First Aid cover for event organisers throughout the country. Volunteers are the life blood of our organisation and they are all trained in First Aid to treat all sorts of injuries ranging from choking to cardiac arrests - at a wide variety of public and community events. With more than 1,700 volunteers, St Andrew’s First Aid has treated 2,146 casualties over the past year and attended nearly 3,000 events and all without the support of any type of external funding.

Page 14

Case Study In addition, each year, St Andrew’s First Aid volunteers donate a total of 152,446 voluntary hours to ensure the public’s safety and enjoyment at events. This year, three of our young members were honoured for their volunteering when our Patron, HRH Princess Anne, presented each with her Patron’s Award. Only four of these much coveted awards have been issued since they were introduced in 1999 as it is the highest honour that our young members can achieve with St Andrew’s First Aid. At St Andrew’s First Aid we are known and respected for our professionalism, reliability and the consistently high standard of service that we provide. This is only possible because of our valued network of volunteers who are known for their expertise, efficiency and approachability. Together we save lives.

Cianna Lang – Young Volunteer New volunteer Cianna Lang joined the Motherwell Cadets in December 2011. She originally attended a First Aid Course with her mother and was so interested in finding out more about First Aid that she decided to join as a Cadet. Although still a relatively new recruit, Cianna has already had the opportunity to attend events with other members, which include football matches, rowing and running events, and the Choices for Life Event 2011. “I’m really enjoying Cadets,” said Cianna. “I get to mix with others the same age, who also have an interest in First Aid, and I have a great time attending events. I now just want to keep on going with my training to become a full member and then perhaps a Youth Leader.”

Youth Development We believe every young person has the ability to make a real difference in their community. Badgers and Cadets make up our Youth Development Group which provides children and young people with developmental opportunities to help them achieve their full potential. This is done with a firm emphasis on being led by the views and aspirations of our young volunteers and with a commitment to equality of opportunity for every young person who wishes to get involved. Badgers are for 6 to 10 year olds and provide an opportunity for young people to meet with others in their age group and participate in a programme of stimulating and interesting activities. We have 7 Badger Sets and over the year the number has increased by 15 % to 85 Badgers. Badgers also had a greater presence at events such as the Youth Conference 2011. Cadets are aimed at 11 to 15 year olds and provide the opportunity for young people to develop their skills and interest in first aid training and associated subjects. Page 16

Structure, Governance and Management The Youth Development Group continued its work this year, with a focus on preparing for the Youth Conference in June 2011. This was the first time for this event and due to its success, we expect it to continue on a biennial basis. Around 80 of our young members attended at Tulliallan Police College. The Young First Aider of the Year Competition took place on 1st May 2011. Awards were given to the following Volunteers: Members Category (age 17 – 24) Graeme Walker, Queen Street Company Victoria Gray, Queen Street Company Cadets Category (age 11 – 16) Shona Chalmers, Bilston Glen Cadets Kirsty Baxter, Bilston Glen Cadets Novice Winners Grigory Matyunn, Bilston Glen Lauren Anderson, Bilston Glen

Financial Review The Charities Accounts (Scotland) Regulations 2006 require St Andrew’s First Aid to prepare financial accounts incorporating income, expenditure, assets and liabilities relating to all facets of the charity. Full, audited and approved Financial Statements to 31 March 2011 are available on request. The financial summary for the purpose of this annual review has been extracted from these Financial Statements. To the year ended 31 March 2011, St Andrew’s First Aid had an operational deficit of £249,992, after adjusting for realised gains on investment disposals of £9,019. The operational deficit was further adjusted by unrealised gains on investments of £89,579 which results in a net deficit transfer to reserves of £160,413. The operating deficit is not sustainable for the medium to long term and our business plan is to separate our commercial activities from Page 18

Allocation of funds in 2010 –11 those of our charitable activities from April 2012, to enable us to maximise our potential in commercial markets and to actively pursue opportunities that are not currently being exploited. During 2010-11 there were a number of significant expenditure programmes. The building was officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal in January 2011. An amount of £29,627 has been utilised from the Modernisation Fund during the year. Funds were allocated to various projects, such as delivering our IT Strategy, the revision of the Royal Charter, and job evaluation scheme.
