If a child in your care hurts themselves or starts to choke, would you know what to do? Never is rapid First Aid treatment more vital than with children. The physiology of young people can be very different from adults – requiring specialist knowledge and techniques. Having the correct First Aid equipment on site can stop an accident turning into an emergency. Keeping products past their expiry date can be unsafe as products will start to deteriorate and may not be effective. When was the last time you checked the products in your First Aid kit? • All workplaces should, by law, be equipped with a suitable number of appropriately stocked First Aid kits. • First Aid kits must be replenished as items are used and expiry dates are passed. • All employees and visitors should be protected against infection from bacteria. • Effective early treatment of burns significantly reduces the severity of the injury. • If you work with harmful substances, effective eye wash essential. • The chance of survival after the heart stops falls by 10%* for every minute that passes without defibrillation. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is easy to use and could save a life. • Not having the right fire safety equipment and an appropriate number of trained Fire Marshals can cost lives – and your business. • Clear appropriate signage is a legal requirement for workplaces and work vehicles. • Employees must be protected against all identified hazards with effective personal protection equipment.

• Organisations are required by law to consider safe evacuation and ensure the provision of equipment for assisting those who are disabled or unwell. • Businesses are legally required to have an accident reporting system in place. The HSE Accident book is designed to meet all legal obligations. • Employers have a legal duty to display a Health and Safety Law poster in a prominent position. • Businesses must have an appropriate number of trained First Aiders and Fire Marshals available during all working hours.
