‘Buying locally is one of the most fundamentally important things we can do if we want a more sustainable food culture. It changes everything, reducing food miles, emissions and pollution, building local economies and resulting in fresher, tastier food. It ’s a step that sounds simple but sometimes it ’s not; with vast, 24-hour supermarkets such a quick and easy default option, it can be very tough for small producers to compete. It ’s incumbent on those of us who believe in local food to seek out and promote the farmers, growers and makers who are doing a good job of producing it. That ’s what we do at the River Cottage Canteens, and we’re delighted to work alongside bodies such as Hampshire Fare who work so hard to support those producers too.’ Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

Join the Adventure at the New Forest and Hampshire County Show!

T

he New Forest & Hampshire County Show will be held at New Park, Brockenhurst on 28th, 29th and 30th July 2015. This year, the Show is delighted to announce, for the first time in the Show’s history, the attendance of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment with their exciting and dynamic Musical Ride as their main ring attraction. The Household Cavalry will wow the crowd with their amazing display of horsemanship and will be a sight not to be missed. The troop, all mounted on black horses and resplendent in red and blue ceremonial uniforms, will give two performances on all three days of the show. The Musical Ride showcases the very best of military equestrianism and tradition and their spectacular mounted display team will perform a dynamic performance to wow the crowds. It is certainly a wonderful sight not to be missed. As well as this spectacular attraction, the Show will once again welcome the Ringwood Brewery Heavy Horse Musical Drive and the Old Time Farming Tractor tug-of war competition in the main ring, both are traditional must-see elements of the Show. Our theme for this year is ‘Join the Adventure’ so why not come along and try your hand at milking a cow, hold a day old chick, take part in a tug of war with a tractor and watch all the beautiful animals on display. Visit the Forest Fun Factory which runs a full programme of events between

10am – 4.30pm and be entertained by clowns, choirs, dance acts and much more! Make sure you head over to our Show Farm where the children can get up close and personal with all sorts of farmyard animals, pop into our Countryside Area for Terrier and Ferret racing, enjoy the incredible machines in the Old Time Farming section and follow the trails around the Showground to learn about agriculture, food and farming. There are also over 600 trade stands providing some of the most varied and unusual goods and produce – from large

commercial companies to small local businesses, for those of you looking to make that special purchase. One area not to be missed is the Flower Show which is one of the most stunning must-see parts that the Show lays on. It is Hampshire’s answer to the Chelsea Flower Show, boasting beautifully landscaped gardens, Sweet Pea classes and Flower Arranging competitions as well as the Southern Vegetable Championships and displays of plants and flowers from trade nurseries.

available, or visit the Food Hall for some well-earned refreshments. Whether you live in the local area or are visiting on holiday, why not make the New Forest & Hampshire County Show an essential part of this year’s calendar and enjoy the adventure.

Inspiring Young Cooks It’s not just top chefs who are tempted by Hampshire’s array of fresh quality ingredients. Local schoolchildren are enjoying using local produce to create their own delicious dishes. Two local competitions, Create and Cook organised by Fit2Cook sponsored by Southern Co-operative and Young Cooks organised by Owtons sponsored by Fullers give aspiring chefs the chance to show off their skills. Create and Cook is open to 12-14 year olds. Entrants design a two course meal and finalists cook their dishes for a panel of judges. Find our more for your school and go to www.fit2cook.co.uk/createandcook Sponsored by Southern Co-operative

The Young Cooks competition is open to under 12s and promotes healthy eating. Find out more for your school and go to www.owtons.com Sponsored by Fullers

THE PIG THE PIG in The New Forest is really a restaurant with rooms! This is a place that’s all about the walled kitchen garden. Everything is driven by the gardener, forager and chef – they grow and find the food, the chef then creates the 25-mile menu (what we can’t get from our garden and grounds is sourced locally). This immediacy from garden to plate is THE PIG’s trademark!
