A letter from the mayor August 1, 2012 Mr. George Ostrander, President Plano Youth Soccer Association 221 West Parker Road, Suite 480 Plano, TX 75023
Dear Mr. Ostrander, The City of Plano is proud to serve as home for the Plano Youth Soccer Association and the 32nd Labor Day Soccer Invitational Tournament. PYSA is a big reason why Plano was recently named as the Number Two Soccer City in the nation by Livability.com and why Russell Creek Park continues to be the premier soccer tournament park in Texas. Plano is admired in its success as an AllAmerica Host City and was recently selected as America’s Safest City by Forbes.com. Our sport fields and facilities are noted for being meticulously planned and carefully maintained and Plano Parks and Recreation Department is committed to our being the ideal teammate in your success. Plano is both exciting and friendly, with a unique blend of art, entertainment, hotels, meeting facilities and an old-fashioned can-do, will-do attitude. We are just near enough to Dallas to enjoy the big city benefits and just far enough away to be able to offer superior value for the sport traveler. We humbly accept the responsibility to host the athletes, coaches and support staff participating in the 32nd Labor Day Soccer Invitational. On behalf of the Plano City Council and our citizens, we stand prepared to devote our resources to ensure the success of this exciting competition. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your host and please don’t hesitate to let me know if I can provide additional assistance. Sincerely,
Phil Dyer Mayor

Soccer thrives in Plano STAFF REPORT
Welcome to Plano, the home of one of the most fanatical soccer fan bases in the United States. According to Livability.com, Plano is the second best city in the nation for playing, watching and living soccer. From youngsters barely old enough to kick a ball to world-class high school athletes, Plano is the place to enjoy the sport. The annual Labor Day tournament produces some of the best games of the year and showcases the top talent of all ages. The city has become a popular place to scout soccer talent at all levels and has recently produced a long list of college soccer players, and with more than a dozen high school players on a players-to-watch list and there are more stars in the making. Later in this magazine you’ll read about one Plano player who has signed with FC Dallas. According to Livability.com, what makes Plano one of the best soccer cities in the
country is the number of players there are here. More than 11,000 children participate in Plano Youth Soccer. There are also a handful of smaller clubs in the area. The city has several soccer complexes and parks with soccer fields that are well maintained. Among the largest recreational facilities in the city is Russell Creek Park, which can be configured to have 21 soccer fields. The city of Plano has worked closely with Plano Youth Soccer to build soccer facilities across the area. The two groups have discussed building a soccer training facility at Russell Creek Park. Youth soccer tournaments are a big boost to the local economy. Approximately 25 percent of "sport-generated" hotel stays each year come from youth soccer, according to Cissy Aberg, sports sales manager at the Plano Convention and Visitors Bureau. Plano is a short drive from the home field of FC Dallas, a professional soccer team that averages about 13,000 fans per
game. The city of Plano has more than 50 parks, seven trails, a nature preserve and
three more sports complexes. Collin County has three parks, a 43-acre preserve and trails.

16 FC DALLAS SIGNS PLANO PHENOM ACOSTA KEVIN HAGELAND khageland@starlocalnews.com
Plano native Kellyn Acosta was named to ESPN NEXT as one of the top 10 prep athletes in the country. FC Dallas is the latest to support the hype as the Major League Soccer team has signed the 16-year-old phenom as part of the league’s Hometown Player initiative. “FC Dallas is excited to sign Kellyn Acosta to a professional contract,” said Schellas Hyndman, FC Dallas head coach. “Kellyn is a very gifted player. He was the youngest member of the U.S. U17 National Team last year and he has played a lot of different positions during his time with the U.S. U17 Residency Program.” Acosta got his first taste of national level play before reaching U17 though as he was also part of the U15 National Team. The Plano native is now part of the U18 National Team player pool, most recently taking the pitch at the Lisbon International Tournament. FC Dallas has seen Acosta closer to home too in the club’s development program. Playing for FC Dallas during academy season, Acosta started 27-of-28 games for the U16 team, scoring nine times and helping lead his side to the playoffs. Acosta also played up with FC Dallas’ U18 squad eight times, logging 907
minutes. The 16 year old’s toughest test may have come June 16 when he was on the pitch for the entirety of an MLS Reserve League match against the Houston Dynamo, scoring a goal in the 31st minute of a 3-2 loss. Acosta tickled the twine as a midfielder, but the 5-foot-10, 150-pounder is also an adept defender. “We see [Acosta] as a player that may start off as a defender, but eventually he will make his way into the midfield,” Hyndman said. “He brings a lot of athleticism. He is a two-way player and he seems to be a very courageous player.” Acosta will be available for selection at the start of the 2013 MLS season.

Kellyn Acosta might start out as a defender but could make his way to midfield.
The United Strikers beat LA Premier FC Black (California) in the finals, 3-2 (SO). LA Premier took a 1-0 lead in the 8th minute and advanced that advantage to 2-0 just before halftime. The United Strikers leveled the match in a three-minute span with goals from Oscar Gudiel in the 61st minute and Alfredo Molina in the 64th minute. The United Strikers converted all of their penalty kicks to claim the title, 3-2.
Texans fall in finals While one Metroplex squad triumphed Sunday in Sacramento, another fell as the Dallas Texans 97 lost to GUSA Navy (North Carolina) in the U15 girls finals at the 2012 US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup. GUSA defeated the 97 Texans, 2-1 (OT). The two teams had tied, 1-1, in pool play. Sunday belonged to GUSA though, despite being down a player much of the match. The

Plano has been named the No. 2 best soccer city in the country by Livability.com. To determine criteria for the list, Livability.com editors followed the lead of US Youth Soccer. Plano, the only Texas city in the top 10, finished behind Overland, Kan. Editors looked for small to mid-size cities with the best soccer programs and facilities. Plano fits the bill. In addition to the aforementioned MLS signing of Acosta, US Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup win and runner-up finishes, Plano ISD alums have captured NCAA Titles and the city has won more UIL State Soccer Championships than any other in the state. More than 11,000 Plano children participate in youth soccer each year.

Plano West Senior High won its fifth state soccer title, continuing domination of the state.
WEST COMPLETES DRIVE FOR FIVE WITH STATE FINALS WIN OVER SEVEN LAKES KEVIN HAGELAND khageland@starlocalnews.com
GEORGETOWN -- A regulation varsity soccer match is 80 minutes long. Yet it was one minute that made all the difference this year as Plano West (23-3-4) defeated Katy Seven Lakes (23-4-3), 1-0, to
capture its fifth Class 5A State Championship and first since 2007. “It didn’t even hit me until there was about 10 seconds left,” said Carley Phillips, West head coach, who won a state title as a player for the Lady Wolves 10 years ago. “I don’t even know how to describe this ... it’s an amazing feeling, really special.” The key to the game was the 19th minute. West controlled the first 15 minutes of the Class 5A State Finals from Birkelbach Field, thanks in part to its physicality, but early attempts from senior Logan Beal and junior Casie Ramsier were stymied. Those two would combine forces in the 19th minute with Casie passing the ball into the box to an open Beal. “I knew if I could get it to [Beal], she could score,” Casie said. Beal had similar aspirations at first. “I was coming in and I was open, but I had a bad angle,” Beal said. “Then I saw [junior Brooke Ramsier] and I knew my girl wouldn’t miss.” Beal was right as she passed to Brooke, who tickled the twine from 8 yards to make it 1-0 with 21:46 to go in the half.

“It felt like that was the one goal we needed to really get going,” Brooke said. It was actually the one goal Seven Lakes needed to really get going as the Lady Spartans set up a 1 v. 1 within the next 20 seconds with Rachel Arthur charging toward West junior keeper Claire Wheatley. “The first five minutes after a goal are always the most dangerous,” said Wheatley, an all-tournament selection. “I saw her coming at me and I went for the ball.” And much like Wheatley had done throughout the shootout in the Region I Finals against Flower Mound Marcus, she came off her line and broke up the attempt to keep West’s 1-0 advantage intact. “After that save I was just like, ‘Oh Claire, I love you, I love you, I love you,’”

Page 18 — Star Community Newspapers — August 26, 2012 Brooke said. “What a rush of relief.” West junior defender Taylor Jackson was quick to agree. “That save by Claire was so huge,” she said. “I think we let our guard down a bit after the goal, but that snapped it back really quickly.” That reflected in the run of play as West reasserted itself over the final 20 minutes of the half with good looks from seniors Karson Keogh, Natalie Gibson and freshman Nicole Smith. None of those opportunities was successful, but the Lady Wolves maintained a 1-0 lead at the break. The first 10 minutes of the second half looked much like the first with Smith, Beal and sophomore Tori Gates getting attempts on frame. Seven Lakes keeper Kylie Hambleton was there each time though, including a save on a 21-yard shot from Gates in the 50th minute and a stop on a 38-yard free kick by Keogh in the 67th minute. Gates and Keogh were both all-tournament selections. Hambleton’s saves seemed to flip the switch for the Lady Spartans, who then took control of play for the first prolonged period of the day. “Seven Lakes stepped up and really threw a lot at us,” Phillips said, “but our defense held strong.”

Jackson, Keogh, juniors Sparky Fischer and Midori Rinkliff continually curbed Seven Lakes’ counter attacks and prevented any sustained runs by the Lady Spartans from getting past the top of the West box. “The defense really did an amazing job,” Wheatley said. Wheatley was pushed into action multiple times over the final 10 minutes, but the best opportunity either team had in that span came when Hambleton saved a shot from Gates in the 78th minute. Seven Lakes wouldn’t offensively possess the ball past midfield again as the clock ticked down, albeit somewhat slower than usual due to curious official stoppages during Lady Wolves’ substitutions. “Yeah, I’ll have to talk to the UIL about that,” Phillips said with a laugh. That only served to slow the inevitable as the clock hit zero and West had a 1-0 win. “I was so relieved and excited,” Fischer said, “I just started jumping up and down.” “Finally we can celebrate,” Casie added. For scoring the lone goal of the finals and being a continual catalyst for West advancing the ball up the field, Brooke

was named State Finals MVP and picked for the all-tournament team. “It’s hard to explain,” she said of the honor and state title. “This is just such an awesome feeling.” The victory upped West’s all-time record to 10-1 in the state tournament and represented a record fifth UIL State Girls Soccer Championship. “I still can’t even describe what I’m feeling right now,” Jackson said as tears began to trickle down her face. “This is really like a dream.” But as the gold medals around the necks of the players, coaches and training staff signified, what happened Saturday and throughout the 2012 season was very real. “We wanted to win state so badly; I’ve never wanted anything more,” Wheatley said. “We knew we didn’t want our season to end, we wanted to finish it.”

SOCCER PROVES AGAIN IT IS BEST SPORT PISD HAS TO OFFER KEVIN HAGELAND khageland@starlocalnews.com
It is widely believed that football is king in the city of Plano. And that is almost true as it is actually futbol that rules the Plano ISD athletic scene by nearly every measurable component. “I think a big part of the reason for the city’s success in soccer is because Plano got in on the ground floor,” said Dawn Crow, Plano East girls head coach. “The first year you could have a varsity soccer team, Plano did, which has a lot to do with the history and tradition this city has established.” PISD has had a great deal of success in a
Pitch Perfect variety of sports. But when compared, it’s a case of anything those other sports can do, soccer can do better. “This area has always been a hotbed for soccer with such talented players,” said Jennifer Grubb, former West girls head coach and former Plano player. “And the tradition is so big too; it started when my brothers and I played. You had players getting to or winning state and once you are there, you want to do it again.” PISD has seven state football championships, all won by Plano Senior. With the Plano West girls’ 1-0 state finals
triumph over Katy Seven Lakes on Saturday, PISD soccer teams have won 15 state titles in the past 26 years with the Plano boys, Plano girls and Lady Wolves all having won championships. On the boys side, the Wildcats lead the state in all classifications with six titles. On the girls side, the Lady Wolves are tied for the state lead at any classification with five titles and the Lady Wildcats are third with four championships. If that balance isn’t enough, the other three varsity PISD teams (West boys, East girls and East boys) have all been to the Class 5A State Tournament. The Plano boys and West girls basketball teams snagged state titles within a week of one another in 2006 while the Plano boys and West girls won dual championships on the same day in 2000. The UIL’s history of awarded state soccer titles goes back to 1983 and the PISD has had the best team of the decade in every decade since then. The Plano girls were the best of the 1980s

With West winning state this season and set to bring the bulk of its team back next year, the Lady Wolves may have the inside track to being the team of the 2010s. “I think a big part of it is there is always amazing coaching,” said Logan Beal, West senior forward. “We have great coaches now and there were great coaches before I got here; they let us be who we are.” PISD has had strong coaches both short-
