Celebrity athlete to tackle her first iron

Triathlete has something to prove

An international celebrity of the triathlon world will take part in The Grand Columbian this year, which organizers say may be a huge boost to the event. In triathlon circles, Ann Wessling is a big celebrity. She anchors her TriCenter television show that covers in-depth news of triathlons and triathletes on Competitor TV. Wessling will compete in her first-ever iron-distance race here, and TV cameras will follow. Her interest has already earned the race more than one mention in Competitor magazine. TriFreaks, along with the videographer iMadMedia, feature a coulee-shot video on their website welcoming Wessling to town at trifreaks. com/GrandColumbianTri.aspx. It features several local folks welcoming her to the area.

Chris Durnford from Osoyoos, British Columbia, has a big incentive to do well when she competes in the Olympic category this weekend. Chris has spent 21 years training triathlon beginners. She retired a year ago. “I have to do well to show my students that I can do what I tell them to do,” she said. Chris was here last year, for the first time, and placed third in her category. Training in Osoyoos is similar to the real thing here, Chris stated. “It is hilly here, very similar to your area,” she stated on the phone. Chris has been competing in triathlons for all the years she coached (21), and plans to travel and enjoy the comforts of her motorhome, going south in the winter and returning to British Columbia in late spring.

Not in downtown Boise now Lance Davisson, from Boise, Idaho, will compete in his first Grand Co-

Rise is first timer

lumbian this weekend in the half-iron aqua-bike event. “I’m a little familiar with the area since I competed once in Wenatchee,” he said. He plans to stay at Steamboat Rock State Park, arriving Friday morning. His training in Boise consists of 30-50 miles a week on his bike and two or three splashes a week in a place called “Veteran’s Pond,” not far from downtown Boise. Davisson is a recent transplant from New Mexico and has a consulting business relating to natural resources. While land is pretty flat in the Boise Valley, there are plenty of hills nearby. Lance says his strong suit is the swimming part. “I grew up swimming,” he stated. He’s trying to get up to speed on the bicycling part of the aquabike event.

Sam Rise is taking advantage of The Grand Columbian to come home to Elmer City. The 2007 graduate of Lake Roosevelt High School is currently in his master’s program at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. “It will be my first time,” Sam said from Tacoma last week. Rise will take part in the Olympicdistance race, and has been running

and swimming most of the summer. “Just lately I have been biking, so I hope I’m ready,” said Rise, who was an offensive linebacker for the PLU’s football team. He said preparing for the triathlon helps “keep me in shape.” He will have his parents Ralph and Linda, to cheer him on, along with a lot of Raider buddies. Rise is a spring graduate of PLU.

Nicole Hicks from Coulee Dam had such a good time last year that she is going to compete in the Olympic category again during The Grand Columbian on Saturday. Hicks said she has been running every day, training for this weekend event. “I’ve been doing about 25 miles a week on my bike, and up until June, I was swimming on a regular basis,” she said. Last week she talked about the event after a swim on Lake Roosevelt. She said the lake was “cold” but she didn’t feel any current where she was swimming. Hicks came to the area about five years ago from Arizona and currently is working on her degree at Eastern Washington University.

No matter her time, this comeback will be a triumph Camilla Spackman from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, will be competing in her third meet here this weekend. She was here in 2007 and 2008, the last year when she was sick. “It wasn’t very much fun that year,” she said. In 2009, Camilla had colon cancer surgery and this is her big year back. She plans to leave Calgary Thursday and arrive on Friday. When she isn’t training for the triathlon, she is training other people. She is a professional trainer. She swims in a nearby lake during the summer and at an indoor pool in the winter. Camilla said she bikes over 100 miles a week. And since she lives in the southwest part of Calgary, she does her running there. Camilla will be competing in the half-iron event. After her cancer surgery, she got right back into training and took right off, biking indoors to get back in shape and where it was safer than being out on the roads. “This is my comeback,” the Canadian stated.

Organ donor will compete in super tri

A man with one kidney will compete in the first ever so-called supertriathlon next week, just to underscore the fact that organ donors can completely recover from the surgery. Terry Craig, of Penticton, British Columbia, donated a kidney to his wife in 2005, and has become something of an evangelist for organ donation since then. “I wanted to get the message across that, after becoming a donor, one can physically do what they did before the surgery,” he said.

Welcome to the area, athletes!

Please make sure you READ the signs for YOUR respective turn around. If you cut the run course short, unintentionally or intentionally I will have to DISQUALIFY your results. Out of all the things I get to do as a Race Director, this is my least favorite thing to do. Please don’t make me do so!

Reminder For the Swim: The Super Tri swim course is 5.0 kilometers around the swim course. Swimmers will do two laps of the full course and then turn towards the finish at the buoy marked by “S” . Each full lap is 1.18 miles, and swimmers will exit the water and go over a timing mat for each lap before entering the water to continue! For details on direction to swim, check out our website. The Ultra (Iron) swim course is 3.8 kilometers around the swim course. Swimmers will do two laps of the full course before they finish. Each full lap is 1.18 miles, and swimmers will exit the water and go over a timing mat for each lap before entering the water to continue! lap (1500 meters) around the smaller swim course. Please make sure you know the difference between the Long and Olympic course! Swimmers will swim the course until they get to the buoy marked by “O”. Once they get to this buoy they will swim following the red line to the big yellow mark, and then swim to the finish. For details on direction to swim, where to turn, etc... please see our website. Maps are also on page 6 and 7 of this special section.

Have a great race, athletes!

AID STATIONS& SPECIAL NEEDS BAGS: Aid Station Information: For the runs there will be aid stations approximately every 1.5 miles. The bike courses will have strategically placed aid stations as well. The Half, Ultra and Super Tri will have your Special Needs bags at approximately the half way mark for both the Run and Bike. You will receive a bag for each at Packet Pick-Up. The course maps have the aid stations marked if you’d like to review them. All aid stations will have water, Hammer Heed™ and flat cola in case you need it. They will also have Hammer gels, bananas and candy bars. In addition, the run aid stations will have Cool Wet Sponges , Hot Chicken Soup(T2 area Aid Station only) and emergency heat shield blankets for the Super Tri and Ultra (Iron) Distance athletes.

not discard any trash other than at aid stations. If you have bottles, packaging, or any other containers or trash of any kind you wish to throw away YOU MUST HOLD ONTO THEM UNTIL YOU GET TO THE NEXT AID STATION! We will also provide strategically placed catch bins for trash after each aid station where you can toss your trash without having to stop. The local community, parks and state are kind enough to let us use their roads and trails, so be kind enough to protect them! If you throw things away at aid stations then we can pack out what we pack in. Failure to do so will impede our ability to continue producing this race for all of you.

All aid stations will have radio support to call out for help or report any problems. Run aid stations will carry reflectors, flashers, and or flash lights should it get dark while you are running. Run aid stations will also be equipped with lighting, have at minimum a first aid kit and reflective heat blankets. Be safe, use whatever you need!

Welcome, Triathletes!

Most of this year’s run routes go back to the Downriver Trail along the Columbia River, after it was tried along SR 155 last year out of Coulee Playland. New race organizers felt that course not suitable after dark, so runners (except for those in the duathlon) will start and end the last leg of the race at the park below Visitor Center at Grand Coulee Dam, crossing the bridge over the Columbia on the sidewalks, then using the Downriver Trail for most of the run. Each run — for the Olympic, the half-iron, the iron, and the super tri differ only in length and number of times repeated. Exact route directions are available online, along with complete course “flyover” movies at http://trifreaks.com/GCCourseInfo.aspx.

Do wn Olympic distance atheltes will bike from Spring Canyon on SR 174 to the Grand Coulee Hill Road that heads toward Almira, continue on Old Coulee Road, then on Bagdad Road to SR 174 and back down to Grand Coulee, ending up at the park below the Visitor Center at Grand Coulee Dam.
