he 54th running of the area’s Colorama celebration is coming your way May 5-7, Mother’s Day weekend.
• Paradise Amusement Carnival is kicking off the big event at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 5, open Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. The carnival is offering new rides this year and is again providing, through the chamber of commerce, discount tickets that are on sale at The Star newspaper, North Cascades National Bank, H&H Grocery, Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union and the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce office. • The traditional Arts & Crafts & Food Fair
opens Friday and Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. both Friday and Saturday. • The Pro-West Rodeo at the Delano Rodeo Grounds kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday and again at 3 p.m. on Saturday. • The seniors will put on their Cowboy Breakfast at 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday. • That will end just in time for the big parade, running down Midway, beginning at 11 a.m. Satuday. • One of the featured events will be the return of the Over the Dam Run for 5K, 10K and half marathon runners beginning at 8 a.m. • A few minutes later the “Walk the Dam - Build a School” begins at 8:30 to raise money for the new
proposed K-12 school facility. The walk and races start at the east end of Grand Coulee Dam. Registration will be set up at Mason City Memorial Park in Coulee Dam. In addition to the events, remember to purchase your Colorama Button. They are $3 each, numbered and give you the opportunity to win some $1,000 in prizes. Also, you can purchase a colored Colorama Tshirt, with the profits from this sale going to the school building fund. Look for excitement and fun at the Colorama weekend celebration, May 5-7.

Proceeds from the sale of the buttons are going to purchase a number of special prizes that will be made available to button holders at a special drawing at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at North Dam Park. Royalty in the Colorama parade
T
here will be plenty of royalty for Colorama’s Grand Parade, Saturday, May 7.
Leading off the royalty will be the coulee’s own Colorama Rodeo Queen, Rachel McClure, along with her court, Princess Mikaylah Thompson. Miss Rodeo Washington Amanda Emerson will be on hand. Joining the group will be Newport Rodeo Queen Courtney Montgomery. Springdale Frontier Days Pro-West Rodeo Queen Katy Osterholm and Princess Cheyanna Wing will ride in the parade. Nespelem Junior Rodeo Queen Emily Stevens and Princess Ameera Parisien will appear. The Grand Coulee Dam area will have marching bands from both the Grand Coulee Dam Middle School and Lake Roosevelt High School. The Lake Roosevelt band will be led by student Mason Marin. The Brewster Middle School and Brewster High School bands will also add a musical touch to the parade. The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Achiever of the Year” Kathy Baty and “Business of the Year” Pepper Jack’s Restaurant’s owners Norm and Carlene Worsham will be honored entries. Carnival offers fun for all
P
aradise Amusements brings it big carnival to town with the opening at 5 p.m. Thursday. Hope you took advantage of the pre-carnival advance ticket sale, because if you did, you’ve saved yourself a bit of change. But no matter -- the carnival is worth the cost when you see the glee and excitement in the kids when they experience the personal excitement of the various rides. Friday the carnival opens at 3 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. This year’s carnival event promises some new rides. The amusement company has purchased another carnival company and has put together a big show for coulee area residents. Regardless of age, there’s plenty to do and enjoy at the carnival. The carnival started setting up early this week at North Dam Park. Tickets are on sale at the carnival site.

Two shirts, one cause

wo shirts and a walk are raising money for new school
Anyone who has wanted to walk across the top of Grand Coulee Dam will get that rare chance Saturday morning. That’s when the Rotary Club is sponsoring the Walk the Dam, Build a School” event. With their $15 entry, walkers will get a T-shirt to commemorate the special occasion, just like the runners who cross the dam in one of Tri-Freaks’ three Over the Dam Races, which start a half hour earlier. Another special T-shirt is on sale to help the same cause with a different logo. This one is the official Colorama T-Shirt sold by the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce. The shirts, made of high-quality, pre-shrunk cotton, are designed by Richard Button, of Button It, Inc. in Grand Coulee. They sell for $20.

Three runs and a walk

ook for a lot of walkers when they hold the “Over the Dam Run” on Saturday, May 7.
Several hundred have indicated that they would like to take part in what promises to be a fun day here in the coulee, with a number of events of the Colorama celebration going on. The walking part titled “Walk the Dam, Build a School” will get underway at 8:30 a.m. It all begins at 7 a.m. at Mason City Park at the base of the hill at the north end of the dam. Runners and walkers alike will leave from there on their respective distances. There are the 5K, 10K and half marathon events for the runners, who will eventually end up at North Dam Park in time to watch the grand parade, which begins at 11 a.m. The schedule for participants is half marathon, 7 a.m.; 10K, 7:10 a.m.; 5K, 8 a.m.; and Walk the Dam, 8:30 a.m. Walkers will cross the dam, and a bus wlll be available to take them back to the beginning site. Walkers may also cross the dam as many times as they wish, and will ring the bell for the school fund, depending on whether they have sold challenges to friends or family who will be happy to pay up at the end of the day. Tri-Freaks, the organizers of the run and walk, were hoping for 300 runners. The organizers said they expect about 500 participants in the Over the Dam event. It’s not too late to enter the walking portion of the race. See you there.

Race routes lead to the fun spot
All the runs in the Over the Dam Run will start at the east end of Grand Coulee Dam and end up at North Dam Park, in the midst of the Colorama festivities. Runners in the 5K race will cross the dam and head to the park, taking a detour from SR 155 by jogging up to B Street and over to SR 174 to avoid the parade route. Runners in the 10K and half marathon races will follow added routes that take them north of the dam first. Walkers in the Walk the Dam, Build a School event can catch a bus ride back to Mason City Park from the west side of the big dam. — map from Map My Run and Google Maps.

Cowboy breakfast offers the good grub

Rodeo offers up fun and prizes

t’s here, and it takes center stage both Friday and Saturday during the big Colorama celebration.
It’s the Pro-West Colorama Rodeo at the Ridge Riders Arena in Delano. Friday’s action begins at 5 p.m. with the mutton bustin’ event for kids who are 6 and younger and weigh less than 60 pounds. Spectators agree that this is one of the funniest events anywhere - the chance to see the little shavers try to ride a sheep. A $15 entry fee gets that little boy or girl the ride of their lives on the back of a wooly, bucking sheep. Mutton bustin’ is also scheduled on Saturday at 2 p.m. leading into the main rodeo events. There’s also a steer riding event for kids 9-12. This event is limited to the first 20 entries with a $25 entry fee. It gives them a shot at a $200 money prize and a first-place belt buckle. The big cowboys and girls take over the events at 6 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday with all the normal rodeo events for an outing that you’ll not forget soon. There are covered stands in case it rains. Come to the rodeo both Friday and Saturday.

Tricky family will perform at rodeo
A
dding a little something extra to the Colorama Rodeo this year, the family that supplies the bulls and broncs are also bringing their tricky kids, and we’re not talking about goats. Fans at last year’s rodeo will remember the children trick riding around the arena with some pretty amazing stunts, and that was their very first performance. “We’re way better this year,” says the mom of the bunch. Lynnette McMillan said Monday the family got into trick riding after the girls attended a camp in Colorado three years ago. Since then, four of the eight McMillan children have been working on their relatively rare skills. “They all started, and it kind of just snowballed,” Lynette said. The Soap Lake family figured it would be a natural fit, since they provide the stock for many rodeos they attend anyway. And the crowds seem to like the kids. Only about 100 rodeo trick riders hang from saddles in the United States, she says, and most of them are single riders. That gives the McMillan family an edge with enough variety to provide a show. So look for Caleb, 13; Riley, 10; Hanna, 9; and Daisy, 7 to show off some pretty fancy tricks at the Colorama Rodeo on Saturday.

Scouts selling donuts
Boy Scouts Troop 24 will be selling Krispy Keme donuts in front of the Foisy & Kennedy building on Midway Avenue from 9 a.m. until the parade is over Saturday morning. The scouts are raising money to go to camp, which costs about $300 each. The donuts will be picked up in Spokane early that morning, so they’ll be fresh.
