Jesse Adkins, valedictorian

by Scott Hunter The student with the top academic record of the class of 2012 places a lot of emphasis on the importance of self motivation. Jesse Adkins graduates Saturday with a 3.99 grade point average, earning himself the valedictorian honor. Adkins said he recently spoke during orientation to eighth graders, next year’s freshmen, about what it takes to be successful in high school. “I’d say the number-one thing is you have to just want it,” Adkins said in an interview. “You have to make it happen for yourself.” A big part of that is dependent on his next bit of advice: “You must be here every single day. It isn’t like middle school.” That noted, Adkins added that he would like to thank his parents, teachers, coaches and friends for their support. Adkins plans to attend the University of Washington next fall on a pre-med track. He’s not sure of his specific science major yet, but currently wants to go into sports medicine, an area he’s experienced in from the patient side. “I’ve had a lot of injuries,” he noted of his four years as a Raider in basketball and track and field.

Luke Night Wolf, salutatorian

by Scott Hunter Luke Night Wolf is the salutatorian for LRHS’s class of 2012. He will attend the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. He was accepted earlier this school year to the prestigious institution and is thinking of majoring in history or political science, although he won’t have to declare that until the end of his first year there. After four years at Annapolis, he’ll have five years to serve in either the Navy or the Marines. After that, he’d like to continue to serve in the civilian sector: he wants to be a politician, eventually a U.S. congressman or senator. As a lover of history and student of current world affairs, Night Wolf expressed frustration with gridlock on Capitol Hill. “I just want to help change things,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to, like, lead people and change something.” Night Wolf had a taste of that as the 2011-12 president of the Associated Student Body at LRHS, a post for which he beat valedictorian Jesse Adkins by 15 votes. The president experience wasn’t as hard as he thought it might be, he said, but it was “a taste.” His advice to incoming freshmen: “Don’t procrastinate. … I see it happening all the time.” Night Wolf will graduate with a 3.869 grade point average. He tranferred to the district after eighth grade from Havre, Mont. His parents are Pamela Whalawitsa, of Grand Coulee, and James Night Wolf, deceased.
