Three nights of live music planned for Festival of America T

he July 4 “Festival of America” music in the park program will stretch over three days, Coulee Dam Mayor Quincy Snow, the organizer of the music, said last week. Music will begin Thursday, July 4, at 5 p.m., in the park below the Visitor Center, and conclude on Saturday, July 6, with a 6 p.m. presentation by The Cruizers. A local group, Dam Kids, will break in this year’s stage from 3-5 p.m. Thursday. Kayla Newland, well known to coulee music lovers, and a local to boot, continues the music Thursday, July 4 at 5 p.m., bringing her country music theme to the park. At 6:30 p.m., reggae artist Raggs Gustaffe will delight the crowd with his Bob Marley-like presentation. “You will really enjoy Raggs and his music,” Snow said. At 8:15 p.m., headliner Steve Sogura will make his eighth appearance in the coulee and will bring his “Elvis” performance to fans here. He will perform until the Laser Light Show presentation at 10 p.m., which will be followed by the fireworks show over the dam. On July 5, Kathy Boyd will bring her music group Kathy Boyd & Phoenix Rising to the coulee for the first time. The group’s bluegrass music has been recognized around the world and should play well here, Snow stated. They will be followed Friday at 8:15, with another presentation by “Elvis” Steve Sogura, who will entertain fans until just before the Laser Light Show. On Saturday, July 6, beginning at 6 p.m., The Cruizers, a classic rock dance party band will take the stage. The Cruizers performed here last year. The town of Coulee Dam plans and provides the music for the Festival of America celebration each year and pays for it through its hotel/ motel tax fund. Raggs Gustaffe

Sogura wins the crowd at the dam in 2012.

Elvis comes back to the dam T here will be “a whole lot of shakin’ going on” at the Festival of America when Elvis Presley impersonator Steve Sogura performs. Sogura, from Ravensdale, Wash., will make his eighth appearance in the coulee at 8:15 p.m. July 4, and will bring his “Elvis” performance to fans here. In his Elvis impersonation, Sogura interacts with the crowd, walking into the audience and looking and sounding a lot like Elvis Presley. He will perform songs from throughout Presley’s 23-year

singing career. Sogura looks like Presley from his younger, slimmer days and may wear a white jumpsuit with a white belt. Presley wore the jumpsuit during the mid-1970s. According to the Elvis Entertainers Network website, Sogura’s Elvis impersonator career started in 1992 when a friend signed him up to sing a Presley song at a karaoke bar. He has been impersonating ever since, including appearances in the “Almost Elvis” movie about Elvis impersonators and traveling with a rock and roll show to casinos,

He won more than one first nightclubs, cruises and corporate and private events all place award for his act, inover the United States, the cluding in the “Spirit of Elvis Tribute Contest” in Las Vegas website states. in 2005.

Bluegrass may not quite describe it

K

athy Boyd & Phoenix Rising will offer what you might be tempted to call “bluegrass” music but is better described as “original roots.” That is, the music planted by bluegrass and other genres has grown. Based in Tualatin, Ore., the group has won awards with their original roots music and performed high-energy shows throughout the West. They’re on tour promoting

the release of their latest all-original recording, their fourth. “Lowground” was released for international radio play in January and became the number-one bluegrass album downloaded for play over the air in its first week, containing all of the top-ten singles for the week. “After eight years together we definitely have our own unique sound,” states the band’s leader, Kathy Boyd.

Cruizers work from a decades-long song list T

hink “party time.” That’s the atmosphere The Cruizers are most at home in and that they’ll bring to the park below the Visitor Center at Grand Coulee Dam, Saturday, July 6 when they take the stage at the Festival of America. The Cruizers will perform “classic rock done right” July 6 in the lower Visitor Center

park at Grand Coulee Dam. Spokane’s “most versatile party band,” has a song list longer than your arm and plays covers from the 1970s, ’80s and more, according to their facebook page. They count among their influences groups like Boston, Tom Petty, Deep Purple, The Stones and The Cars.

The King’s Court

The group lists among their top 45 songs Lynnard Skynard’s “Sweet Home Alabama”, Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion”, Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues”, John Lee Hooker’s “Mustang Sally”, The Beatles’ “Get Back”, CCR’s “Born on the Bayou”, Cheap Trick’s “Surrender” and Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” just to give

you an idea of the breadth of their repertoire. The group was a crowd pleaser at the festival last year. Members of that group include Tom Bergeron on the drums; Jeff Thornton with the guitar; Mark Gales, bass; and Tim Kromholtz on the keyboard.

Red, White and Bruise roller derby scrimmage planned for July 5 A

new sport for the area will offer its public debut Friday, June 5m when the Grand Coulee Derby Dames kick off their first roller derby scrimmage with players from teams around the region. One of the fastest growing sports in the country, the women-on-wheels sport gets its first public showing in North Dam Park’s tennis court area. The “Red, White and Bruise Scrimmage” is free to the public and you are encouraged to bring your own lawn chairs, since there is no seating available. It starts at 6:30 p.m. and will consist of two 20- or 30-minute halves. A 50/50 raffle will be held at halftime.

Organizer Chick Norris, Derby Rayne-ger (Rayne Rabe to locals) said the event is drawing players and teams from Spokane, North Idaho, Moses Lake and Tacoma. “We will have some vets there

so we can have a couple advanced jams,” Chick said, “just so the crowd can see the difference in play.” She suggested bringing the whole family. The local Grand Coulee team, just formed in January, has been hard at training three times a week in the Grand Coulee Dam Middle School gym. Two members of the team will likely be ready to skate in the competition by July, Rabe said as she readied an official test for them Monday night. By national rules, for safety reasons players aren’t allowed to compete until they meet specific skills tests. Rabe has been coaching the team in the sport that captured her passion in 2009. Since then, she’s learned much about a sport that’s not at all the rough-and-tumble gratuitous female fighting from an earlier era. Teams don’t hate each other, they support each other, Rabe says. “You have instant friends and a whole league that will support you,” she says. The sport pits two teams against each other at high speeds on skates. Modern roller derby takes place on a flat track, where five team members maneuver so one of them can pass the other team’s five. It involves lots of strategy, and lots of rules. The July 5 competition is designed to introduce the sport to the area. Rabe, who moved to Coulee Dam a year ago, will already move away in July with her husband, Josh, who took a job in Alaska. But the Grand Coulee Derby Dames have already held a new election of officers and will continue to build the team, currently with 14 members, looking for more. Kiesha Toulou is president; AdriAnn Smith, vice president; Rebecca Derrick is secretary. The team has a Facebook page at facebook.com/ GrandCouleeDerbyDames.

ew activities will add to this year’s upcoming Festival of America, which will stretch over three days this year for the traditional July 4 celebration in the lower Visitor Center park below Grand Coulee Dam. Chamber of commerce Manager Peggy Nevsimal said a number of family-friendly, carnival-like games have been included this year on Saturday, July 6. Games include such events as a pie-eating contest, a ring toss, a dunk tank and a photo booth, among other activities. A fire truck will be on hand for kids to explore, Nevsimal stated.
