Best rodeo in the state starts Friday
T
his year’s Colorama Rodeo, a two-day show, May 10-11, with Queen Erin Wieldraayer presiding, kicks off at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 10, with the (almost) full range of events, and then will continue Saturday at 3 p.m. The Pro-West rodeo was named the best in the state last year. Rodeo advance tickets are currently on sale at Loepp Furniture. Adult tickets are $8 each day, and kids 11 years and older will get in for $5. Children 10 and under can attend the event without charge. Tickets for the DWK Fowler log cabin playhouse are also on sale at Loepp Furniture for $1 each. Young participants in the rodeo events need to get their entrance fees paid in advance. The junior steer riding event for 12 years and under costs $25; for the novice bareback riders, 13-17 Erin Wieldraayer years, the fee is $25; and the novice saddle bronc riders for 13- to 17-year-olds is $25. Officials stated that $10 of the entry fee goes towards the office charge, $15 to the pot and $200 added and a buckle goes to the winner. The Ridge Riders will feature a Coors Beer and Pendleton Whiskey Garden, where fans can relax and enjoy themselves. It all takes place at the Ridge Rider Arena on Alcan Road in Grand Coulee. McMillan & Layton will again provide the rodeo stock and popular announcer Bob Garrett from Stratford will keep rodeo fans up to speed on what is

going on in the arena. The rodeo will have to take place this year without one of its funniest features — the mutton-busting event. This event normally draws a lot of laughs from the crowd as youngsters attempted to ride sheep out in the arena. Ridge Rider President George Kohout said that the event was cancelled this year because the club couldn’t find anyone to
supply the sheep. The Cleatis Lacy Bull Riding event, which was held on Sunday as part of the Colorama celebration last year, is scheduled now for June 28, with a
Ranch Rodeo to follow on June 29. The Ridge Riders will host an royalty luncheon at the rodeo grounds club house immediately after Saturday’s Colorama Parade.

Helicopter tours to show area from above
I
t will be old home week for Tim Tueth when he returns to Grand Coulee to give helicopter rides during the Colorama Festival. Tueth is a 1992 graduate from Lake Roosevelt High School, and went through school here from the second grade on. “My family moved to the area when my dad took a job on the Third Powerhouse project,” Tueth stated. He flies for Inland Helicopter in Spokane, giving flying instructions and taking people on tours. The helicopter, a Robinson R44, will be here on Friday and Saturday and will take off and land at the upper ballfield at North Dam Park. Tueth said that he will begin at 1 p.m. Friday and fly until dusk, then provide rides all day Saturday. The helicopter can take three passengers, Tueth said. If he has a full load, the price will be $30; with fewer than three passengers the cost goes to $40 each. Tueth said the minimum passenger load will be two. Tueth learned to fly taking instruction in both Texas and Spokane and has 750 hours as a pilot. The coulee area helicopter tours were arranged by the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce.

Carnival adds to the Colorama festival
T
he Paradise Amusement Carnival will be held near North Dam Park, May 9-11, and is one of the featured attractions of the Colorama Festival. Pre-sale tickets sell for $25 and are good for one full session. A $25 ticket is good from 4-9 on Thursday, May 9; or for Friday 3 to 9; or for one of two sessions on Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Organizers emphasized that the
advance tickets are good for any of the sessions, and the same ticket at the gate will cost $35. You can turn the ticket in at the gate for the customary wrist band. Until they sell out, tickets are on sale at the Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union, Chamber of Commerce office, Coulee Hardware, Coulee Medical Center, Funzee’s, Grand Coulee Center Lodge, H&H Grocery, NCNB, and The Star.

hose who long for the time when anyone could walk across Grand Coulee Dam on most days, can satisfy that nostalgia next week on the Rotary Club’s Walk the Dam, Building a School event to benefit a fund to help build a new school. Although construction is starting and funding for most of the school has been secured from the state, many features of a new school remain unfunded. Rotary’s fund will help solve that. The walk will start at the east side of the dam at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, giving participants plenty of time to get across before that day’s Colorama Parade. A waiting bus on the west side can take transport who want a ride back to their car near the registration site. Pre-registration is available Friday evening from 4-7 p.m. at North Dam Park, along with registration for the That Dam Run, which starts earlier Saturday morning. Registration is also available the morning of the race in Mason City Park in Coulee Dam (across from the post office), beginning at 7 a.m. Donations of $15 or more are suggested, and a unique T-shirt has been designed by Sunflower Graphics to support the school fund.

hat’s being billed as the 33rd annual run that crosses Grand Coulee Dam will be held Saturday, May 11, beginning at the east end of the dam, the run after a well laid out course, will end at North Dam Park. There are four events: 5K walk/ run; 10K walk/run; half marathon race; and the Rotary classic, “Walk the Dam, Build a School” (see separate story on Rotary event). The “That Dam Run” is being put on by Tri-Freaks, and organizers stated this week that there is still a need for volunteers. The half marathon begins at 7 a.m.; the 10K race at 7:15; the 5K run at 8 a.m.; and the Walk the Dam, Build a
School event at 8:15 a.m. Use of Grand Coulee Dam is limited from 7-10:30 a.m. Anyone not starting to cross the dam by 10:15 will not be allowed to continue, organizers stated. Packet pickup will be available 4-9 p.m. Friday from 5 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. on Saturday at North Dam Park. All athletes will be issued security wrist bands that will be used to cross check names and bib numbers for permission to enter the dam area. A shuttle, organizers noted, will run every 30 minutes from North Dam Park to Freedom Park in Coulee Dam at a cost of $3.

It was jail time for a number of Coulee ladies Tuesday as Colorama sheriff Birdie Hensley and deputy sheriff Lonna Bussert herded them into a makeshift jail next to Foisy & Kennedy building in Grand Coulee. It was all in fun and turned a few dollars for the planned Coulee Pioneer Museum. To avoid being jailed, the ladies could have purchased a $5 Get out of Jail card from one of the handful of sheriff deputies working the streets. I
f you are arrested by a member of Birdie Hensley’s all-women posse during the Colorama season, your fines will go towards establishing the Coulee Pioneer Museum, a dream that Hensley has had for some time. Hensley has a jail set up on Midway Avenue, to which you may be hauled if anyone swears out a “war-
rant” and pays the applicable fee. It costs $10 to request that someone be arrested, and $10 for that person to get out. But you can avoid all that with a $5 “Get out of Jail” card. It’s all part of the Colorama Festival celebration, and in good fun, and the money goes to a worthy cause.
You can also become a museum member with a contribution of $25. Deputies are Birdie Hensley, Lonna Bussert, Donna Deckman, Brandie Burns, Darlene Morava, Lynn Rinker, Carolyn Haven and Diane Kohout.

No coolers at the rodeo
R
odeo fans will have to leave their coolers home this year. Ridge Rider President George Kohout said that there will be plenty of places at the arena site to purchase both beer and soft drinks. In prior years, fans could bring their coolers and drinks to the rodeo. Kohout said the Ridge Riders have gone to some effort to provide both beer and soft drinks through their popular beer garden and concessions. We need the income and it will be easier to police the area, Kohout stated. The popular Ridge Rider Pro-West Rodeo begins at 6 p.m. Friday night and resumes Saturday at 3 p.m.
