Lots to do for Colorama T here’s plenty to do at this year’s Colorama celebration. Of course there’s the parade, the rodeo, and the carnival. But how about some of the other activities? Take the craft fair at North Dam Park. Featured are a number of places to eat, and then the tour of booths. Lots of opportunity for the purchase of gifts for a later date -- or for Mother’s Day. The craft booths are up again from a year ago and many of the craft people are back from last year. The craft fair activity begins on Friday running from 10 a.m. until dusk both Friday and Saturday. The carnival starts at 5 p.m. Thursday, 3 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday, closing at 9 p.m. each day.
The old fashioned beer garden will be featured again this year in two places. One, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, will be at the tennis court at North Dam Park Thursday night, 5-9 p.m., Friday from 5-10 p.m. and Saturday, 4-11 p.m. Live music is planned. The second beer garden will be at the rodeo grounds in Delano, and is sponsored by the Ridge Riders. It will be open during both Friday and Saturday rodeo hours. You can also take advantage of the Cowboy Breakfast at the Bonnie Femling shops in the Colorama market at North Dam Park in 2013. SixtySenior Center, Saturday morning eight vendors will fill the park this year. from 7-10:30. There’s also the run/walk the races, plus a “Walk the Dam — start at the east end of the Grand dam activity. Here’s your chance Build a Gym” event to benefit a Coulee Dam. All runners start at 7 a.m. Walkers start at 8 a.m. to cross the dam. “Run the Dam” fund for a new school gym. Both runners and walkers offers 5K, 10K and half-marathon

Haley Wade is queen of the rodeo
T
his year’s 58th Colorama Pro-West Rodeo celebration will see Queen Haley Wade reign over the parade and all rodeo events. Selected last October, Wade is a 17-year-old high school senior from Ephrata. Parade and rodeo fans will see Haley ride her 10-year-old horse “Latago Bee.” The daughter of Jeff and Beth Wade, she is active as a singer, plays the guitar and enjoys softball, in which she has lettered at her school. Haley stated that working with her horse has given her the confidence to represent the Ridge Riders and the Colorama Rodeo this season. The Ephrata teen has been active in a number of school choral programs and with Future Farmers of America. She also lettered at state in the Washington High School Equestrian Teams program, an equine activity. She plans to attend Walla Walla Community College this fall, then transfer to Central Washington University after two years. In being selected for Colorama queen, Haley had to pass a written test and oral exam, give a prepared speech and successfully complete a horsemanship drill. She has already represented the Ridge Riders in a community event, but this will be her first official appearance locally. You can see her in the big parade and at the Ridge Riders’ 58th annual rodeo.

C
owboys and cowgirls will be out in their rodeo duds ready to provide thrills and plenty of “oohs” and “ahs.” The rodeo kicks off at the Ridge Rider grounds in Delano at 6 p.m. Friday night, and picks up again at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The Pro-West rodeo was named “best in the state” in both 2012 and 2013, and brings to fans the same excitement this year. Promoters promise action-packed excitement — packing more action into just a few seconds than probably any other sport. Admission at the gate is $10 for adults, $8 for students. Those under 10 go free. This year’s presentation has a number of added features. These include mutton busting (it’s back), the McMillan family trick riders, the Skagit Rein Rider Drill Team, and the Whiskey Run. The Ridge Riders will offer a Pendleton Whiskey and Coors beer garden for those who want refreshments. The Colorama Rodeo is a familyoriented activity, and everyone in the family is encouraged to enjoy the action. On Saturday, to kick off the day’s events, the seniors sponsor their traditional Cowboy Breakfast at the Senior Center, beginning at 7 a.m. and running until 10:30. Price is $8 for adults, and $4 for those under 12.

elicopter rides will return as one of the added features of Colorama this year. Colorama will see Lake Roosevelt High School graduate Tim Tueth return to give helicopter rides to those who want an aerial view of the coulee. Tueth graduated from LRHS in 1992, and had lived in the area since he was in the second grade, so it will be like coming home for him. Last year, Tueth’s first year giving helicopter rides here, was highly successful. He will lift off and land again this year from the upper ballfield at North Dam Park, with a limited three passengers at a time. Cost is $30 if he has three passengers, or $40 each if there are fewer, minimum two. Tueth learned to fly by taking instruction in both Spokane and Texas. The tours are being arranged by the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce. Flights will be offered Friday and Saturday during Colorama weekend.

Thousands gather along Midway Avenue to watch 2013’s Colorama Parade.
Getting ready for the big parade?
T
he 57th Colorado Festival Parade kicks off from its launching spot on Spokane Way at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, and winds its way down to Midway Avenue and up Highway 155 through the main business district. Better get a spot early because parking spaces are sparse. Announcing this year’s parade is Nespelem resident Dave McClure. Chamber of Commerce officials state that the big parade will have between 60-70 entries, including marching bands from Lake Roosevelt, two from Bridgeport and Vicki Watson and her marching band from Pasco. Royalty from a number of towns and rodeos will be on hand, as well as the usual fire engines and police cars. Being an election year, a number of politicians have already indicated they will be in the parade. The Colorama Parade will include both young people and oldsters. Everybody loves a parade, both to be in one and to watch one.
