A

s of Tuesday morning, there were 50 entries for the annual Colorama Parade, but 10 of those had just come in on Monday, said Peggy Nevsimal, director of the sponsoring Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce. The final count will likely be closer to 60-65, she said. That’s because the parade is one

where you’re very likely to see someone you know who is in it to show pride in the community, or to advetise a great cause, or just for fun. So when someone shows up the morning of the parade with a nice smile and application in hand, parade chair Tammy Norris is likely to say, “Oh, all right! You’re number 65, get in line.” You can still be part of the big Colorama Parade, May 9.

You’ll see entries in eight different categories: Community entry, Organization/Club, Business, School Band, Classic car, Hot Rod, Equestrian, and

Junior. The parade begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, near the staging area on Spokane Way in front of the former Center Elementary School. The route, about a mile long, takes just over an hour to complete. The route follows Federal Avenue to Midway Avenue (SR155), takes Midway south to the Four Corners intersection with SR 174.

For all the head-on, rough-and-tumble, dirty action in a rodeo, cowboys need a lot of athleticism, and even grace, to get the job done. — Star file photo

I

t’s time to take those cowboy duds out of the closet and get ready for the 59th running of the Colorama Rodeo. There’s a little bit of everything for young and old at this year’s ProWest Rodeo. There’s excitement, some laughs and memorable events. There’s the laughable mutton busting event (picture time); the McMillan Family Trick Riders are back (don’t try this unless you are a seasoned horseman); the Skagit Rein Riders Drill Team, the Whiskey Run, and all the traditional rodeo events. The mutton busters who ride those wooly sheep are up to 5 years of age and up to 60 pounds. It cost $15 to enter. Rodeo officials said the mutton busting is

open for eight kids on Friday night and eight on Saturday. The rodeo dust will kick up beginning at 6 p.m. Friday and again at 3 p.m. Saturday. Admission at the gate is $10 for adults, $8 for students and those under 10 are free. The event is sponsored by the Ridge Riders with a handful of corporate entities also involved. There will be food available, so be prepared eat and watch the action. A beer garden will be offering refreshments for adults.

ou can save some big bucks this year by purchasing Colorama Carnival tickets before the carnival starts. Advance session tickets are on sale at seven locations: The Credit Union, Chamber of Commerce office, Coulee Hardware, Coulee Medical Center, H & H Grocery, Loepp Furniture and

The Star newspaper. Advance session tickets are $25. If you wait until the event, the session ticket costs go to $30. But the value of purchasing early is even greater. With your $25 advance purchase you get five game tickets free, a value of $5. At the gate cost of

$30, you have to purchase game tickets separately, so your savings is really $10. The carnival will operate on Thursday after school, beginning at 5 p.m.; Friday from 3 p.m.; and on Saturday,

two sessions — from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 4-9. Paradise Amusements, out of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, returns this year for another Colorama presentation.

ou can now stop by a local business and purchase your Colorama Button. For $3, not only will you show your support for the big annual celebration, but it could be a lucky button and be your ticket to one of the many prizes at the May 9 drawing. This year you have to be present for the 1 p.m. Saturday drawing at North Dam Park to be eligible to win a prize. The Colorama Buttons are numbered. Grand Coulee Dam Chamber of Commerce officials will draw numbers out of a hat and award prizes to those present holding the lucky numbers. You could win such prizes as a fire pit, lawn chairs, a cooler, a barbecue, a TV, and many other prizes, including artwork. You have to be present to win, but there’s lots to do at North Dam Park if you get there in time for lunch at one of the food booths and to shop from more than 70 vendors in the park. The drawing will be held at gazebo.

Button boards like this can be found at many area businesses.

ake Roosevelt High School graduate Tim Tueth will be back with helicopter rides for this year’s Colorama. This will be the third consecutive year in a row that such rides will be offered at Colorama by Inland Helicopter in Spokane, where Tueth gives flying instructions and takes people on tours. Tueth walked through the hallowed halls of LRHS back in 1992, when he graduated. Tueth lived in the Grand Coulee area since the second grade and for him it is like coming home. Each year the rides have become more popular as people are thrilled with the view of the area from high above the ground. Cost is $30 each if there are three passengers or $40 if there are under three. Tueth learned to fly by taking instruction in both Spokane and Texas and appears again this year through the sponsorship of the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce. Flights will be held Friday and Saturday, May 8, 9.

T

hose attending this year’s Colorama Rodeo are in for a treat. If you have never seen the McMillan family put on a riding display, you will agree afterwards that their performance, alone, is worth the price of your rodeo ticket. Five of the McMillan siblings will show you the rewards of working hard and trusting your horse. The McMillan family consists of Mom, Dad and 10 children. They are no strangers to the rodeo circuit and the ranch lifestyle. From their ranch in Soap Lake, they run cattle and are stock contractors, providing stock for rodeos throughout the northwest area, including Colorama. Each of the kids is fully involved in the ranching and rodeo business. When they are not trick riding, they compete in amateur and junior rodeos. One of their favorite ways to earn money is to buy pony prospects, riding them and then taking them to the Billings Horse Sale to sell each spring. The McMillan Family Trick Riders have been performing at rodeos

throughout the United States for the massive crowds demonstrating their past four years, many times before professional abilities.
