ine giant inflatables will form a new “Fun Zone” at this year’s Colorama

Festival. The Fun Zone will be set up at Banks Lake Park, on the lake right next to North Dam Park. There’s still time to save $5 by purchasing advance tickets. Tickets are currently $20, but the price goes up to $25 the days of the events. They are available at The Star newspaper, the chamber of commerce, Coulee Hardware, Loepp Furniture, Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union, H&H Grocery and the Trading Post. “There will be a wide variety for all,” said chamber Executive Director Peggy Nevsimal, “a few units for kids ages 2-5, a few units that appeal to elementary and middle school kids, and additional units that will support adult weights and heights. … We think you’ll be pleased with the number of units that will be available for kids of all ages, weights, and heights. It’s rodeo time in the coulee!

T

he Ridge Riders are holding their 60th rodeo this weekend with events both Friday and Saturday, May 6 and 7. It’s thrills as usual, and a little bit of rodeo dust, to top it off. You can get a few bucks’ break by buying your tickets in advance at Loepp Furniture. They are $10 now for adults and $12 at the gate. For students it’s $8 now and $10 at the gate — unless you are 10 years of age or younger; then you get in free. All the popular events will be there. From bull riding to mutton busting (for age 5 or under) events will bring out the oh’s and ah’s from the crowd. Friday’s program begins at 6 p.m. and then at 3 p.m. Saturday. Special belt buckles will be presented to the winners of the various events, and Ridge Rider officials have added to the purses to attract cowboys from all over. A “brand” new “Rattlesnake Saloon” will be open for a little of that liquid refreshment, and you can take that word “brand” literally. The new bar is festooned with actual brands from area ranches burned into the siding. There will be food and drink for everyone at the concession booth. Get there early and enjoy the show. A cowboy in the 2015 Colorama Rodeo is about to experience a hard landing.

set up on the grass at the Banks Lake Park and inflated Friday morning. Coming to the Colorama Festival will be the Tunnel Plunge (a 19-foot-tall dry slide); the Bungee Blast; the Tropical Palm Bounce and Dry Slide; Junior Olympian 5-Sport Championship; The Giant Tiki Island Obstacle Course; Kidzilla 50-foot and Triple Treat; the Tropical Island Theme Bounce; the Disney Frozen Bounce House; and the Powerball Bubble Sports balls. The inflatable “Fun Zone” replaces the usual carnival. The carnival company, Paradise Amusements failed to schedule Colorama, and the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce hurried to secure the services of Jump N2 Fun for the annual event.

Crazy horse skills

I

f you think skill on a horse is exciting, then go to the Ridge Riders Colorama Rodeo, May 6, 7, and watch the McMillan Family Trick Riders. The group performed in nearly 40 venues last year, which included some of the prime rodeos in the country. The McMillan family will make their fifth appearance at the Delano Rodeo Grounds, exhibiting their holdyour-breath stunt riding horsemanship. The group is made up of seven McMillan children: Caleb, Riley, Hanna, Nick, Davey, Zane and Josie. The oldest of the trick riders, Caleb, rejoins the group after some time off in the rodeo circuit. He is a recent high school graduate. One of the things the McMillan group does is a special tribute to the nation’s veterans. The family group has performed in places like Billings, Montana, Steamboat Springs, Colorado and in rodeos nearby, such as Othello and Kennewick. From their ranch at Soap Lake, they run cattle and are stock contractors, providing stock for rodeos throughout the northwest area, including Colorama. Each of the kids is fully involved in the ranching and rodeo business. When they are not trick riding, they compete in amateur and junior rodeos. One of the McMillan Family Riders is barely on, but completely in control, on a ride in the 2015 show in Delano.

Win this “playhouse”

I

t’s become a tradition. For several years, DWK Fowler Construction has built and donated a unique playhouse that someone will win with a raffle ticket this year. Wayne Fowler got the idea to make it in the shape of a teardrop travel trailer, complete with a car pulling it. Fowler handed the idea off to Dennis Jones, who worked with the materials designated for the job to shape it into something quite unique.

Enjoy yourself at Colorama!

The thick lumber is from a logging operation on Gary McClure’s ranch near Nespelem, according to Jones. The corrugated metal for the trailer is actually from the roof over the grandstands at the rodeo. The roof over the seating collapsed last winter under the weight of a big snow. Raffle tickets are available at Loepp Furniture and at the rodeo. The winner will actually be picked at the Ridge Riders’ Junior Rodeo, coming up in July.

Drill team rides with precision, fireworks

T

he Skagit Rein Riders Rodeo Drill Team returns to the Ridge Riders’ Colorama Rodeo again this year. The precision riding group was formed in 1985, when a group of ladies who had a love for horses decided to do something about it and develop a performing group. And perform they do! The Skagit group performs all over the state of Washington and beyond. Their routine is full of speed, precise maneuvers, fast music, fireworks, smoke and plenty of crowd appeal. The group’s motto is “Fun, Fast & Furious.” The Skagit group is made up of a dozen riders who are part of the grand entry with flags waving, and then the show really begins.

Colorama Queen Caitlin to preside

C

aitlin O’Neil will preside over the Ridge Rider’s Colorama Rodeo for 2016, and also serve as an area ambassador throughout the rodeo year. The sophomore at Almira-CouleeHartline High School is definitely not a new comer to the Colorama Rodeo, having participated many years in helping put on the Colorama Rodeo and other rodeo functions as well. O’Neil started last November and still has a big year ahead of her as she and her horse Bartender help the Ridge Riders promote 60 years of rodeo this year.

here will be plenty of music, a couple of floats, and a number of former Colorama queens at this year’s Colorama Festival Parade. The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. this Saturday, forming on Spokane Way near the Les Schwab Tires shop and coming down Federal Avenue to Midway and then up through the center of Grand Coulee. There will be bands from Lake Roosevelt Schools and two bands each from Brewster and Bridgeport. Mounted groups, kids, and an assortment of entries have come in from all over the area. Royalty from Creston, Spokane, Idaho and Republic have already registered for the event. Both the Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union and Coulee Medical Center will have floats. There’s the usual string of firetrucks, police personnel and other motorized entries as well. Even Smokey the Bear is due to make an appearance. He comes through the Mt. Tolman Fire Center. Those who plan to be in the parade are asked to be up near Les Schwab by 10 a.m.
