he Colorama Parade will feature several floats on Saturday. The parade, which will again get rolling at its traditional 11 a.m. start time, starts at the library corner of Federal Avenue in Grand Coulee, turns

left onto Midway Avenue by The Star, then travels the length of Midway. Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Peggy Nevsimal said Monday the chamber expects about 60 entries in

he Grand Coulee Lions Club will have its “White Cane” Humvee in this year’s Colorama Parade, Saturday, May 13, in an effort to raise funds for the Lions’ eye program. The Lions Club promotes eye care for the blind or visibly impaired. The parade begins at 11 a.m., and during the parade the Lions Club will travel the route seeking donations in exchange for Lions Club Foundation information and “White Canes.” Donations fund the Lions Club Foundation’s traveling health van and grants it issues to local Lions Clubs so they can provide financial assistance with cataract surgery and other sight-loss treatments. For more information on the program, you can contact Lions Club President Rick Bako at (rbako@usbr.gov).

the parade. (She gave out four entry forms on Monday, plus 56 were already confirmed). Those will include every local fire department, several floats, lots of

royalty on horses, local organizations and bands from Brewster, Wilbur and Lake Roosevelt. Nevsimal said last year’s parade had 48 entries.

Colorama adds a color — in a run A

new 5K Colorama Color Run will be held at North Dam Park this year, adding literal “color” for Colorama to participants who want to revel in the spirit of the festival. The run begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 13, at North Dam Park. For those who pre-register at www.grandcouleedam.org/colorrun or at the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce, the cost is $22 and includes a T-shirt. Registration on the day of the run will cost $25, and a T-shirt is not guaranteed. Those on the run will receive a Tshirt and get an optional spray of color at six locations along the way. The route will cross North Dam and wind its way along trails for the 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). The racers will not run along the highway. Some 66 people had signed up for the event as of Monday night, and organizers would not be surprised to see the number hit 100 by starting time. The Colorama carnival will feature a Ferris wheel, among a string of other rides, according to Rainier Amusements spokesperson Traci Newton. Newton said that, in addition to the Ferris wheel, there will be rides such

as the YoYo, Spider, Helicopter, Vortex and Ali Baba. This will be Rainier Amusements’ first Colorama visit. Newton said Rainier Amusements takes pride in providing family entertainment and that rides for all ages are a feature of the firm. The popular pre-sale for carnival tickets began this week with a one-day ticket selling for $20. The cost of a daily ticket at the site will be $28. Pre-event tickets are available at the chamber of commerce office, the credit union, Coulee Hardware, Loepp Furniture, H & H Grocery, Coulee Medical Center, Trading Post near

Nespelem, and The Star newspaper. And the popular inflatables Fun Zone that first started in Colorama last year, will be back, to provide entertainment for the youngest among us. The big blow-up toys were a great hit last year when the feature stood in for the carnival. And with the new carnival coming this year, chamber officials wanted to be sure to provide that popular option as well, although on a more limited basis. Also, Colorama button sales started last week with buttons available at a number of local businesses. The $3 buttons are numbered for prizes

in a drawing scheduled for Saturday, May 13. Another popular feature of Colorama this year will be helicopter rides. For the fifth year, Inland Helicopter will be on hand to take Colorama visitors on a helicopter ride over the area. Flights cost $30 if there are at least three people along, and $40 if there are fewer than three. Flights will be available from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday. Flights take off from the ball field at North Dam Park.

The new carnival company has announced it will be bringing back the popular YoYo ride, along with many others for this Colorama. See their advertisment on page 9. — Star file photo

New carnival company comes to Colorama T

he pre-sale of Colorama Carnival tickets will continue up until 1 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at eight locations in the coulee area, Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce officials stated this week. Rainier Amusements, out of Portland, Oregon, prides itself on its safety record and the professionalism of its company representatives, chamber Executive Director Peggy Nevsimal stated. “We are pleased that we have been able to contract with such a highly respected amusement organization.” The festival had no carnival in 2016. After the prior contractor was determined to be a no-show, the chamber scrambled unsuccessfully to recruit several possible replacements, including Rainier, at the last minute. This year, with a stop in Hermis-

ton, Oregon, for Cinco de Mayo the weekend before, their schedule made it feasible to serve the Colorama Festival. “We are excited to be a part of it,” said Crystal Hoss of Rainier. The company, which is a family business, travels all of Washington, Idaho and Oregon, and was the contractor for the 2016 Oregon State Fair in Salem, Hoss said. Pre-sale tickets for the Rainier Amusements Carnival cost $20, with tickets then moving to $28 at the event. The eight locations for pre-sale tickets include The Star, the chamber of commerce office, Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union, Loepp Furniture, H & H Grocery, Coulee Hardware, and the Trading Post on the Colville Indian Reservation. Tickets are good for one person and

Welcome to the 2017 Colorama Rodeo!

I

am the 17-year-old daughter of Tammy and the late Jim O’Neil, and sister of Bronson and Britton Baker and Carson O’Neil of Almira, Washington. I am a junior at Almira/Coulee-Hartline High School, where I am active in FFA, Warrior League, Knowledge Bowl, and Math Team. I also participate in basketball. I don’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t riding or being involved with horses. I have shown horses in 4-H, FFA, and have competed at the Ridge Riders Jr. Rodeo. I also love going on trail rides, breakaway roping, and going to rodeos with my horses. Including my grandmother, Pat Snyder-Heckart, who was the first queen of Colorama, I have amazing support from my family and friends. During my reign as queen, you will see me around the Northwest with my partners in crime, Bartender and Smoothie, who are 18- and 12-year-old AQHA bay geldings. They love being groomed, going on trail rides, and hanging out with each other. The three of us plan to make many memories this summer, and I can’t wait to share it with them. I am proud to represent this rodeo, this community, and this legacy across the Northwest. Both sides of my family have helped with the Colorama Rodeo and Ridge Riders Saddle Club at some time. I thank them for all their support and proudly represent the Ridge Riders Saddle Club, The Grand Coulee Dam Area, and the wonderful sport of rodeo! Happy Trails, Caitlin O’Neil

The playhouse, built as a jail, was created by Dustin Carson, an employee of the construction firm. It took Carson about three weeks, during down time, to build the structure. He is shown here with his children, Colton on the left, and Jaxson. Tickets, $1 each, are on sale at Loepp Furniture. The playhouse is on display in front of the store.
