Colorama carnival to return by Roger S. Lucas

Carnival tickets go on sale this week, offering substantial savings for early birds, a chamber of commerce official reported. Executive Director Peggy Nevsimal stated those who purchase carnival tickets by Thursday, May 10, will save $10. Tickets for early buyers are $20, while the same ticket will cost $30 the day of the carnival. Nevsimal said tickets are available at the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce office, the

Credit Union, Coulee Hardware, The Star newspaper, Loepps Furniture, H&H Grocery and the Trading Post at the Colville Indian Agency. The carnival has added five hours on Sunday, providing four days of carnival entertainment for Colorama fans. Carnival hours will be from 4-9 on Thursday, May 10; 4-9 on Friday, May 11; 12-9 on Saturday, May 12; and 12-5 on Sunday, Mother’s Day. This marks the second year for the popular

Rainier Amusements, a family-owned carnival out of Portland, Oregon. “We are happy to have Rainier Amusements back for their second year,” Nevsimal stated Tuesday. The Portland-based carnival company is under contract to return again next year. Rainier Amusements regularly travels to festival sites in Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

Colorama buttons, parade, helicopter coming by Roger S. Lucas

The Colorama Festival Button for this year’s celebration goes on sale this week. Buy a button for $3, help support Colorama, and you’re in the mix to win one of the many prizes attached to the buttons. All the buttons are numbered and the drawing for the prizes will be held at 1 p.m. at North Dam Park, after the Colorama parade. Buttons are available for sale at a host of locations throughout the Grand Coulee area. Another popular feature of this year’s celebration will be the helicopter rides. White Rabbit Heli Tours, out of Spokane, will provide rides on three days during Colorama. Friday, May 11, the helicopter will fly from 1-8; Saturday, May 12, you can get a ride from 10-8; and Sunday, May 13, the rides will be available from 10-2. Rides are $50, and will take off from the lower athletic field. This is White Rabbit’s first year at the festival. There’s still time to get your entry in Colorama’s grand parade. The parade element will form on Spokane Way near Les Schwab Tires. Judging of entries

will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the parade starting up at 11. Tammy Norris again is parade chairman, and is assisted by Lake Roosevelt High School senior Alan Nordine. You can make an entry in the parade, and it doesn’t cost anything, by going to the chamber of commerce website at grandcouleedam.org/parade.

Parade starts at 11 a.m.

It’s fitting that Colorama’s big parade travels the Midway Avenue. What’s a celebration if it isn’t along the Midway? Parade entrees will line up on Spokane Way Saturday, May 12, and be settled in time for judging, which

starts at 9:30 a.m. Equestrian judging starts at 10. Then at 11 a.m. the parade will wind its way down Federal Avenue and turn onto Midway near The Star newspaper. The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce provides tro-

Color run comes back to Colorama by Roger S. Lucas

It’s just another reason why they call it Colorama! The 5K Color Run on Saturday, May 12, has a lot of attractions. First and foremost, it’s going to be a fun, colorful experience and a good brisk walk or run that is good for your health. It’s starts at 9 a.m., and could get you decorated for the rest of the day. At several places along the 5K run, if you choose to, you could be dusted with a brightly colored material that will make your day a real “Colorama.” Getting sprayed with the colorful material is optional. The 5K Color Run is all in the North Dam Park area, weaving its way over the dam, around the rocks, back over the dam and then winding its way through the various roads and trail networks below the park. You don’t have to run or walk along the highway. But you have to get your entry form in. Do it now to save three bucks. It’s $22 now, but it will be $25 on May 12. Go to the chamber’s website at grandcouleedam.org/colorrun and get your entry in online, or if you choose, you can drop by the chamber office and do it there. The 5K Color Run is not a timed run, and there are no awards. Just fun. Load up the car, get your neighbors involved and be part of Colorama.

phies for a number of parade categories. Organizers expect up to 65 entries this year. There will be sirens, some banks, kids and horses, and all the things that make a parade A PARADE! Those who watch the parade have

learned to park their vehicles along Midway if they want a good vantage point. The parade generally takes at least an hour, and then the entire Colorama Festival opens up for everyone.

Annual rodeo is full of events

Pull on your jeans, and put on your cowboy boots, if you’ve got a pair, and head to the Ridge Riders’ 62nd Annual Colorama Pro-West Rodeo, Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12. See the cowboys and cowgirls compete in one of the most thrilling sports event you’ll ever attend. The rodeo stock is being supplied again by Mel Layton and Mark McMillan, some of the “buckingest” and “meanest” critters around. Both have won honors for their stock contribution to rodeos in general. You’ll hear the familiar voice of rodeo announcer Bob Garrett giving details of what’s going on and throwing in some tidbits that will help you get to know the contestants a little better. Set aside Friday night at 6 p.m. for the kickoff of this year’s Pro-West Rodeo, and come back Saturday at 4 p.m. for the stirring finale of the two-day show. On both nights, a kids’ mutton busting event will pit little tikes against wooly creatures, and a stick race, just before the rodeo starts. There will be bareback riding, tie-down roping, breakaway roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, barrel racing and, of course, the ever-popular bull riding. An additional feature will help keep you entertained: The Skagit Rein Riders, from Skagit County, who have been entertaining rodeo fans since 1985, will put on an equestrian drill show. Enter also Colorama Queen Jessie Walker, a 14-year-old from Omak, who will be on her horse “Blue Frost” as a formal host of the event. Ridge Rider President George Kohout and rodeo Chair Janet O’Neil promise rodeo fans two days of “chills” and “thrills.” Ticket prices are $12 for adults and $10 for kids ages 10 to 18.

Rodeo to include bigscreen replays by Roger S. Lucas

The 62nd annual Colorama Pro-West Rodeo is ready to go, Ridge Rider president George Kohout said this week. The rodeo will play out over two days, May 11 and 12, beginning at 6 p.m. Friday night and then at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Ridge Riders rodeo grounds in Delano. New this year will be a large replay screen. It was scheduled last year at the Cleatis Lacy Memorial Bull Ride, but failed to work. Spectators will get to see replays of some of the outstanding performances on the big screen. “This year we have a backup screen, just in case something happens, Kohout said. Advance tickets are now on sale at Loepp Furniture, for $2 off regular prices. Pre-sale prices are $10 for adults and $8 for kids 10-18 years of age. On the days of the rodeo, prices go to $12 and $10.

Jessie Walker presides as rodeo queen A 14-year-old cowgirl from Omak will open the 62nd annual Colorama Rodeo on her horse, Blue Frost. Walker competes in junior rodeos in breakaway, poles, barrels, steer daubing, goats and team roping. The Omak Middle School student also just enjoys riding and conditioning her horse in the evenings. She plans to travel the Pro-West Rodeo Circuit and hopes to compete alongside her dad in team roping and barrels. She is the daughter of Doc Walker and Pauline Peasley.

Mystery: When did this button thing start? by Roger S. Lucas

Maybe you can help solve the mystery of what year they started making Colorama buttons. The Coulee Pioneer Museum in Electric City has a number of the buttons, but isn’t able to solve the mystery. The Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce doesn’t have a record of when they started making the buttons, which serve to promote the event, raise money for it, and offer raffle prizes. If you have some of the older buttons, and would like to donate them to the museum, Birdie Hensley, docent of the organization, would like to hear from you. You could also drop off the older Colorama buttons at The Star newspaper, and they will be given to the museum. The popular buttons have helped raise funds to put on Colorama for a number of years; it’s just that no one seems to know when this practice was started. This year’s buttons are on sale throughout the area at $3 each. They are numbered for a special drawing that will determine the winners of special prizes on Saturday, May 12, at 1 p.m., at North Dam Park. You must be present to win the prizes. Meanwhile, if you have information on when the buttons started, let Hensley know.

Birdie Hensley checks over the Colorama buttons she has accumulated at the Coulee Pioneer Museum. She seeks information on when the buttons were started for Colorama.

Fowler said the average cost to his company to build the playhouses is about $3,000. Each year, DWK asks a member of his working staff to be in charge of the project. Using company time and getting paid for their work, ideas take shape and sometimes other members of the staff help build it. This year’s playhouse is a tractor, created by worker Clayton Campbell. Some lucky kid will soon be sitting in the cab of the tractor, having the time

History of Mother’s Day Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring motherhood that is observed in different forms throughout the world. Mother’s Day 2018 occurs on Sunday, May 13, in the United States. The American incarnation of Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official U.S. holiday in 1914. Jarvis would later denounce the holiday’s commercialization and spent the latter part of her life trying to remove it from the calendar. While dates and celebrations vary, Mother’s Day traditionally involves presenting moms with flowers, cards and other gifts.

Rodeo “saloon” will open a little early The Rattlesnake Saloon will be open two hours before rodeo time both Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12, at the Ridge Rider Rodeo Grounds. It’s all part of this year’s 62nd Annual Ridge Rider Pro-West Rodeo, a part of the overall Colorama celebration this weekend. This year the Rattlesnake Saloon will be inside a chain-link fenced area, but still in the usual location. Ridge Rider president George Kohout said that Gary Haven had offered to put in the chain-link fence if the club

would furnish the materials. Haven, who was at the site Thursday, stated that he would have the fencing up in plenty of time for the rodeo. The Rattlesnake Saloon got its name from an incident a few years ago, when a live rattlesnake was found in the saloon area. The club was quick to capture the incident to give the venue its official name. It’s not at all clear that a chain-link fence will keep out rattlers. The saloon will open at 4 p.m. on Friday and 2 on Saturday.
