Avoid electrical hazards when remodeling (Family Features) Whether you’re remodeling your home for resale or to improve it for your own enjoyment, safety during the process is a key concern. But one thing that often gets overlooked is the safety of the home’s electrical system. Each year, electrical fires claim approximately 485 lives and cause $868 million in property damage. If you’re planning on doing any home improvement, take some time to make sure your home is wired for safety. Many remodeling projects impact the home’s electrical system: tearing down a wall, putting one up, adding lighting fixtures, moving wall receptacles or replacing the wiring. Before you get started, make sure you have a clear idea of what your electrical needs will be and how you can meet them. Homeowners should obtain the appropriate permits and have the work inspected as called for in local code requirements. Check with your local government to find out what the requirements are in your area. An important note: some jobs are best done by a qualified electrician — it’s better to consult one early in the planning stages than to try and take on a dangerous job by yourself.
Electrical Plan Lighting. Adding or changing the lighting plan for a room requires electrical work. —What kind of lighting will you use? Ceiling fixtures, wallmounted fixtures and recessed lights all need interior wiring; table or floor lamps need outlets. —Will you be changing to a dimmer switch or adding additional switches? —Is there proper support for the new fixtures?
Electronics. Think through the electronic devices that will be used in the room and make sure you have the proper electrical service for those needs and protection for the devices, such as surge protectors. —Computers and peripheral equipment —Televisions, DVD or Blu-ray players, gaming systems —Power tools Appliances and other equipment. Adding a bathroom or wet bar adds to your electrical needs. —Ventilation fan —Refrigerators —Exercise equipment —Heating and cooling elements The electrical needs associated with a bigger remodeling project may require the installation of additional circuits to the home’s existing load center. This is a job best done by a qualified electrician.
Do a Box Check The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) recommends checking your fuse box or circuit breaker regularly — the start of a remodel project is an excellent time to look for the following: —Is your fuse box or circuit breaker box appropriately labeled? Labeling helps to easily identify what circuits power each room in your home. —Are you regularly resetting tripped circuit breakers? Circuit breakers that are constantly tripping indicate that the circuit is overloaded or that other electrical hazards exist. Consult a qualified, licensed electrician. —Is your home protected by Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters
(AFCIs)? AFCIs are devices that replace standard circuit breakers in the electrical service panel and that greatly reduce the risk of home electrical fires.
Arc Faults and AFCIs Arc faults occur from damaged wiring, overheated or stressed electrical cords, worn electrical insulation, wires and/or cords in contact with vibrating metal, damaged electrical appliances and other conditions. This potentially dangerous situation creates high-intensity heat — which may exceed 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit — resulting in burning particles that can easily ignite surrounding material, such as wood framing or insulation. AFCIs are special circuit breakers that detect electrical arcing. They are designed to recognize
when arc faults occur and automatically shut the circuit down before it becomes a fire hazard. AFCI technology is already required in all new home construction, according to the National Electrical Code. However, AFCIs can also be retrofitted to older homes, where older wiring and outdated electrical work may increase the threat of an electrical fire.

Cash for Appliances Washington rebates are only available until funds run out. utdoor rooms continue to be rated as essential by homeowners, given they are extensions of interiors and add real estate value. Yet, designing outdoor living areas comes with its share of challenges. Understanding the basics from the ground up simplifies the process.
The patio is more than a hard surface. It can serve as the outdoor room’s focal point around which other materials and features are styled. The textures and shapes of stone flooring can lend a dimensional feel, while a deck’s color allows it to contrast or blend with the environment.

f it seems like you’re constantly doing laundry, you’re not alone. According to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, the average American family does 8 to 10 loads of laundry each week. And from wash to dry, a single load takes about an hour and a half to complete. Can anything be done to give laundry a lift? Giving your laundry room a quick and easy makeover can clean up this chore and make it more efficient. Tidy Up. The first step is to declutter and clean up the laundry room. Get rid of broken hampers, recycle used containers and give everything a thorough cleaning. Sweep and mop the floor - and don’t forget to clean up the washer and dryer, too. When dust, trash and grime are gone, you’ll feel more efficient already. Sort it Out. Set up a three bin sorter - one bin each for lights, darks and hand washables. Getting lighting basics right
F
urniture, fabric and accessories aren’t the only things to think about when decorating. Lighting makes a big difference in the home. It adds beauty and drama as well as functionality. It can make a small room look bigger and a large room more intimate. Done right, it can have a significant impact — and for far less money then other decoration options.
The Layered Look When it comes to illuminating a room, lighting pros recommend thinking in terms of layers. In general, every room should have three basic layers of light: general or ambient lighting, task lighting and accent lighting.
Ambient Lighting Ambient lighting provides overall lighting for the whole room. Typical lighting fixtures for this layer include recessed fixtures, pendants, chandeliers and surface-mounted fixtures. Recessed Fixtures: A basic recessed fixture, typically housing a reflector floodlight, throws light downward in a cone shape. Placing recessed fixtures in an evenly spaced grid pattern lets those pools of light overlap and provide even lighting. In a room with eight-foot ceilings, place the fixtures in a grid from four to six feet apart. Chandeliers: A chandelier that’s too big will overpower a room. One that’s too small will seem out of proportion. One trick to calculating a chandelier’s size is to measure the width of the room in feet. Double that number and you’ll get the diameter of the ideal chandelier in inches. For example, a room that’s 12 feet wide should have a chandelier no wider than 24 inches in diameter. Surface Mounted Fixtures: Surface mounted fixtures can be very functional fluorescent types with white diffusing plastic covers or decorative crystal designs that can add sparkle and drama to foyers and hallways. Like chandeliers, they tend to distribute light more broadly than downlights, and are useful in delivering light to wall surfaces.
Tips and Tricks n The bottom of a hanging fixture should generally be seven feet above the floor.
If a fixture hangs above a dining table in a room with an eight-foot ceiling, the bottom of the fixture should hang about 30 inches above the table. n
The minimum chandelier diameter for most dining rooms should be 20 inches. It should be no greater than the length of the table minus 12 inches. n For higher ceiling applications, consider using spotlights to add more “punch” to objects below.
Task Lighting Task lighting focuses on a specific area of the room where activities like reading, cooking or sewing require additional light. It can be as simple as a pendant light over a kitchen counter, undercabinet lighting, mirror lighting or a reading lamp by a chair. To achieve multiple task lighting levels that accommodate simple to more difficult activities, try using GE Reveal® 3-way bulbs, which provide clean, white light at three different levels.

For paintings and other decorative items displayed on walls, lighting fixtures are usually 2 to 3 feet from the wall (for ceiling heights of 8 to 9 feet).
