Fireworks set for July 4 off Grand Coulee Dam by Roger S. Lucas

es, the fireworks off Grand Coulee Dam will be on July 4 this

year. Doing the show will be Rocketman Pyro, out of Spokane. It is the third straight year for the Spokane firm to light up the top of Grand Coulee Dam. Speaking for Rocketman Pyro, DanVerHuel said the firm is planning about a 20-minute display. Workers will start setting up the show, using some 40 cases of explosives, about 9 a.m. July 4. “Once we gain access to the top of the dam, we are not allowed outside the gates until

the show is over,” VerHuel stated. The show starts right after the Laser Light Show, which ends about 10:30 p.m., stated Peggy Nevsimal, executive director of the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce. The prime sponsor of the fireworks show is the Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union, Nevsimal said. The setup across the top of the dam will take advantage of the full length of the spillway, some 3,086 feet,VerHuel said. “We plan to light up the full front of the dam to kickoff the show, and this takes over 3,000 feet of setup,” he explained. “Each year we order some

Rocketman Pyro was started in 2005, with VerHeul and Steve Underwood teaming up as owners. “When we start setting up the explosives at 9 a.m. the day of the show, it takes us until about 6 to complete everything,” VerHuel said. A team of six people set the show up, a team made up of friends and relatives. This year’s Grand Coulee Dam show will cost about $10,000, the same as last year. “We are constantly training

so we can put on a safe show,” VerHeul said. In fact, recently the Rocketman crew was scheduled to put on a “training” show at Medical Lake. While waiting for the fireworks show, there will be plenty to do with food, crafts and music at the park below the Visitor Center. Get there early to take advantage of all the activity the Grand Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce has organized for visitors. Last year’s show was staged on the weekend before July 4, and many missed the show because of the change in dates.

State’s “citizen soldiers” headline music on July 4 by Roger S. Lucas

I

t’s almost toe tapping time. Look for a great music evening July 4, as people from all over gather in the shadow of Grand Coulee Dam for the Festival of America. It’s actually a two-day event, convening on July 3, with arts and crafts booths and plenty of good eats and treats. The night of music will start with a country band and culminate with a military band that is part of the 133rd Army National Guard Band, based at Camp Murray, Washington. Kicking off music July 4 is the Jesse Quandt band, coming out of Spokane. Quandt was here last year and promises plenty of toe tapping with his brand of country music, some of which he wrote himself. Quandt is the vocalist. His band includes Mark Adkins on the guitar, Mike Clukey on the drums, and John Forsman and San Cong rounding out the band. Quandt described the Grand Coulee Dam venue as “awesome.” He plans a five-state tour this August. Quandt and his group will play from 5-7 p.m. Topping off the evening music will be a 13-member Washington National Guard “rock band”

The 13 members of the National Guard coming to Coulee Dam are part of a larger group that comes together one weekend a month and two weeks a year from all walks of life. The National Guard group is under direction of Sgt. 1st Class Richard Little, who has described his musicians as a “high energy group of Washington Citizen Soldiers.” The 133rd Army National Guard Band is described on the Washington Military Department’s website as representing “a wide cross section of our community, … music educators and professional musicians, students and other career professionals.” The musicians in Full Mettle Racket, Sgt. Little said, are “eager to share time on this great day with the people of Washington State who will be enjoying the Festival of America at Grand Coulee Dam.” The group on July 4 will be presenting music styles from classic rock to pop, Motown, and country. This group will perform from 8-9, then after a short break return and play until 10.

Safety Tips Obey all local laws regarding the use of fireworks. Know your fireworks; read the cautionary labels and performance descriptions before igniting. A responsible adult SHOULD supervise all firework activities. Never give fireworks to children. Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Save your alcohol for after the show. Wear safety glasses when shooting fireworks. Light one firework at a time and then quickly move away. Use fireworks OUTDOORS in a clear area; away from buildings and vehicles. Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water. Always have a bucket of water and charged water hose nearby. Never carry fireworks in your POCKET or shoot them into METAL or GLASS containers. Do not experiment with homemade fireworks. Dispose of spent fireworks by wetting them down and place in a metal trash can away from any building or combustible materials until the next day. FAA regulations PROHIBIT the possession and transportation of fireworks in your checked baggage or carry-on luggage. Report illegal explosives, like M-80s and quarter sticks, to the fire or police department. And let’s not forget the safety of our pets! Don’t bring your pets to a fireworks display, even a small one. If fireworks are being used near your home, put your pet in a safe, interior room to avoid exposure to the sound. Make sure your pet has an identification tag, in case it runs off during a fireworks display. Never shoot fireworks of any kind (consumer fireworks, sparklers, fountains, etc.) near pets.
