ook for three days of outstanding music when the Grand Coulee Dam Festival of America is celebrated July 2, 3 and 4. The Town of Coulee Dam is sponsoring the music for the second straight year, and according to Mayor Quincy Snow, the town is offering an outstanding assortment of music for the three-day event. The venue for the event is the park below the Visitor Center. Music begins Saturday, July 2, with Eric Engebretson at 4 p.m. Eric E, as he is also known, is familiar to coulee area music fans, having been a regular for several years during the Festival of America celebration. With his voice, guitar and a digital “looper” Eric E can pump out a song from just about any year named back to the first part of the last century. Snow has scheduled what he calls “happy music” for the night cap with the Mariachi Estrella De Mexico band of Wenatchee. They make their second appearance here, and will be on stage from 6 p.m. until 9:30, just before the 10 p.m. showing of the Laser Light Show. On Sunday, music begins again at 4 p.m. with Scott Smith and Kayla Taylor, a couple of area

Take a tour of Grand Coulee Dam
About tours and the Visitor Center
I
t’s a good idea to drop by the Visitor Center before taking tours of Grand Coulee Dam. That way you’ll get oriented, have a lot of questions answered, and get stocked up on some questions to ask your tour guide. The Visitor Center is open at 8:30 a.m. through July and is open until 11 p.m. In August, the hours are 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and in September, 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. In October, the Visitor Center begins its winter hours, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visit the displays in the Visitor Center, then go up in the elevator to the second floor where there are movies about the dam being played. There are also stairs if you want the exercise. Displays include an interactive video game in which you fly through the dam, a game in which you are presented as a group, which choices about how the dam should be operated, then see the results of your decisisions; and a heavy-duty jackhammer that gives you a feel of what it was like for workers on the dam during construction. An hour can easily be spent in the Visitor Center, and there’s something for all ages.

This is what the shoreline of Lake Roosevelt looked like in mid-May. Held way down by the Bureau of Reclamation for flood control, the water is still rising and will be through the Fourth of July holiday. If you’re camping or boating on the lake, keep that in mind.
Watch out for sneaky water levels on Roosevelt
C
amping or boating on Lake Roosevelt? Watch yourself and the lake, which will continue to rise at a couple of feet a day, even on the Fourth of July. That means you shouldn’t pitch your tent
too close, or you might be floating before you wake up. And your boat, anchored out very far, could lift its anchor as the water rises. Good luck finding it the next morning. Better to tie it off at shore with a long rope.
Take a piece of the area home with you! Locally designed souvenirs - a lasting reminder of the unique beauty and rugged appeal of this area. Look for our booth at the park this weekend!

Lake Roosevelt likely won’t be full until about July 10 or 11 this year, a good week later than most years, due to the late spring runoff.

etter arrive early for the fireworks show. Parking is adequate, but you may have to walk a ways if you come late. Besides, there’s free music in the park below the Visitor Center, plenty of food booths and a number of arts and craft vendors with a variety of things to sell the Grand Coulee Dam Festival of America celebration. The fireworks display from the top of the dam will begin at around 10:40 p.m., Monday, July 4, right after the Laser Light Show ends.
Lean back and enjoy the fireworks display as water cascades over the 300-foot-high spillway of Grand Coulee Dam so you can enjoy an added feature of the celebration. Entertainment Fireworks of Olympia, puts on the show. And the entire Festival of America event is sponsored by the Coulee Dam Area Chamber of Commerce and the Coulee Dam Casino, with music sponsored by the town of Coulee Dam.

ne of the more popular features for visitors to Grand Coulee Dam is the Laser Light Show. The show kicks off nightly during July at 10 p.m., and lasts about 35 minutes. Best viewing area is near the Visitor Center where some seating is available, the park below the V.C,, across the bridge in the park facing the dam, or really anywhere below the dam.
The show tells the story of the dam. Sound is piped into those areas and is available by radio on 90.1 FM. In August, the Laser Light Show begins at 9:30 a.m. and in September, the show begins at 8:30 p.m.
