First Things First

Getting the mail – Unless you live in Coulee Dam, your mail will probably be delivered to you in a post office box issued to you by your local post office. Talk to your local postmaster about your mail options. Each post office is staffed and open during regular business hours on weekdays and for a few hours Saturday mornings. You can, however, stop in 24x7 to mail letters (one pickup daily) or to visit your post office box. Shipping – Grand Coulee and Electric City are considered rural routes and, as such, physical addresses are not listed in the US Postal Service database. Because of this, some online shippers who rely on the USPS database for address verification may have difficulty with local addresses. Quitting time – Though many businesses are open a bit later during the summer, don’t be surprised when most are closed by 6pm. Restaurants serving dinner generally stay open until 8 or 9pm. Safeway is open until midnight during the summer, and 10pm the rest of the year. Recycling – While curbside recycling is not yet available here, many local places allow you to recycle aluminum cans, cardboard, batteries, computers & electronics, eyeglasses, hearing aids, motor oil, used clothing, etc. See www.grandcouleedam.org/utilities.html for a complete listing. Local employers – The largest employers in town are the Grand Coulee Dam, Coulee Medical Center, Colville Confederate Tribes, and Grand Coulee Dam School District. Cell phone service – Only two cellular phone providers offer services in the area: AT&T and Verizon. While there is some crossover in service areas, AT&T service is strongest (4G and LTE) in Grand Coulee, Electric City, and Nespelem, while Verizon is strongest in Coulee Dam, Grand Coulee, and parts of Electric City. If you live in Coulee Dam and have AT&T, you may want to talk with AT&T about hardware options for boosting cell coverage in your home through your Internet service. Internet and phone service – Depending on where you live, you may get to enjoy what Grant County PUD calls “the fastest Internet in the nation.” If you live in Grant County, go to www.grantpud.org/customer-service/high-speed-network or call 800-422-3199 to find out if high-speed fiber optic service is available for you, and to find a list of fiber service providers and contact information. Non-fiber Internet options include the following:  Coulee Internet Services offers high-speed wireless broadband service, including in outlying areas without high-speed choices | couleeinternet.com | 509-720-7627  CenturyLink offers DSL service in most of the Grand Coulee area | centurylink.net  iFiber offers DSL service in Coulee Dam and the Geostar/Columbia Springs area ifiber.tv | 866-284-3842  HughesNet and others offer satellite service to outlying areas  Coulee Dam Federal Credit Union offers accelerated dial-up service throughout the area | cdfcu.com/services/internet-service-provider.html | 800-572-5678

Coulee Culture

In the Grand Coulee area, we pride ourselves on being very friendly, neighborly folks. We are known to wave and honk as we recognize you on the road, strike up a lively conversation when we see you at the store, and offer to pick up things you might need when we make a trip into town. Around here, a gentleman’s handshake and word of honor is as good as any contract. So please don’t be afraid to wave back, smile and make eye contact while shopping, and get to know your neighbors. We’re happy to have you in the neighborhood!

Coulee Area Landmarks

When Grand Coulee-area folks navigate and give directions, we most often do so by mentioning notable businesses and local landmarks. It’s often easier to navigate by these landmarks than it would be if you were given full street names and numbers. Becoming familiar with these landmarks becomes an important survival skill in the Coulee. Here are the most common landmarks you will hear (see map on facing page): A Four Corners – Intersection of State Routes 155 and 174 B Canal – Carries water from the Columbia River, via the Grand Coulee Dam’s John W. Keys III Pump Generation Plant, and over to Banks Lake for irrigation purposes. SR 174 crosses the canal just north of Coulee Medical Center. C Causeway – Stretch of SR 155 which crosses Osborne Bay south of Electric City D North Shores – Subdivision area at Bay Area Drive and SR 155, south of Electric City and beyond the causeway and Osborne Bay E East Heights – Small subdivision at the eastern edge of Grand Coulee and Grant County on SR 174, just before the speed limit changes from 35 mph to 60 mph F Geostar/Columbia Springs Estates – Subdivision east of Grand Coulee, shortly before you reach Spring Canyon G Spring Canyon – Off SR 174 east of Grand Coulee, part of the Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area. Popular summer gathering place for groups and locals. H Lakeview Terrace – Trailer park area off SR 174 past Spring Canyon I Steamboat Rock State Park – Surrounded on 3 sides by Banks Lake, halfway between Coulee City and Electric City off SR 155 J North Dam and North Dam Park – At the north end of Banks Lake, off SR 155. Colorama and many other local events are held here (see page 9). K Grand Coulee Dam – The largest concrete structure and largest electricity-producing facility in the United States. L Grand Coulee Dam Visitor Center – The circular building along SR 155 in Coulee Dam where the story of the dam is told daily. This is most commonly referred to by locals as “the VAC.” North America’s largest outdoor laser light show is projected from here nightly onto the face of the Dam from Memorial Day through the end of September. M Crown Point State Park – Offers a commanding birds-eye view (as shown above) of the Dam and the Town of Coulee Dam. Access it from north/westbound SR 174.

About the Grand Coulee

The Grand Coulee Dam area features a unique combination of cultures and counties, lakes and climates, topography and geology. The area is best known as the home of the Grand Coulee Dam, but there is so much more to the Grand Coulee area than just the Dam, including three large lakes, a National Park Service Recreation Area, and a State Park. The relatively small area manages to encompass portions of four of Washington’s 39 counties, and also includes the southern end of the Colville Tribes reservation land. The region is a topographical and geological treasure trove, with stunning granite and basalt rock formations, carved out by prehistoric Ice Age floods, creating a coulee of unprecedented beauty. Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly stunning, when the light playing off the coulee walls is exceptionally colorful. Because of the unique Dry Falls geology and geography of the Grand Coulee basin, the area is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including bald eagles and other threatened and endangered species. At an awe-inspiring span of 5,223 feet, the Grand Coulee Dam is the largest concrete structure and largest electricity-producing facility in the United States. It is particularly dramatic when the waters of the mighty Columbia River cascade down its spillway, as it does occasionally during the spring runoff season and nightly during the summer months. North America’s largest outdoor laser light show is projected nightly onto the face of the Dam from Memorial Day through the end of September, and a Fourth of July pyrotechnic show is launched every year from its top. Numerous Pro-West rodeos and family-friendly festivals take place throughout the year. For more information on the www.grandcouleedam.org area, visit www.grandcouleedam.org.

Coulee Trivia: The Grand Coulee Area is where 4 of Washington’s 39 counties meet: Grant, Okanogan, Lincoln, and Douglas. Because of this, you might hear us refer to this area as G.O.L.D. County.

Omak – An hour’s drive to the north takes you over Disautel Pass to Omak, where you will find businesses like Home Depot, Walmart, JCPenney, Pizza Hut, North 40, AT&T, feed stores, movie theaters, most fast food chains, and other businesses. Native American culture and geologic interest points in the area include the Omak Rock, a large glacial erratic “balancing rock” near Omak Lake. Ephrata – An hour’s drive south takes you past Banks Lake, Dry Falls, Sun Lakes, and Soap Lake, where you will find businesses like Walmart, Ace Hardware, many fast food chains, and a movie theater. Moses Lake – A 90-minute drive south to Moses Lake offers shopping, including Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, Staples, Petco, AT&T, most fast food chains, Hastings Entertainment, movie theaters, and freeway access to I-90. Wenatchee – A 90-mile drive to the southwest takes you past many glacial erratics and along the Wenatchee River to most any shopping you need, including Costco, shopping malls, movie theaters, auto sales, medical care, fast food, and fine dining. Airway Heights/Spokane/Spokane Valley – A 90-mile drive to the southeast takes you through Wilbur, Creston, Davenport, and Reardan, to the Spokane International Airport in Airway Heights, and to Spokane shortly beyond. Here you will find several indoor malls, Costco, Walmart, fast food and fine dining, movie theaters, auto sales, medical care, and other entertainment. Nearby Coeur d’Alene, ID boasts a Cabelas. See wsdot.wa.gov/Publications/HighwayMap/Mileage/GrandCoulee.htm for Washington State Department of Transportation’s driving distances between Grand Coulee and various cities around Washington.
