Surf Coast booze fines top state
New Year’s a real cracker BY ERIN PEARSON SURF Coast revellers received the highest number of liquor related fines in the state on New Year’s Eve as police battled firecracker use and drunken behaviour. Members from across the region were deployed to Torquay after midnight as antisocial behaviour spiked. Torquay Police Senior Sergeant Angelo Ferrara said officers issued 45 liquor related offences – the highest of any area Victoria-wide. Twelve drunks were also arrested and 63 licensed premises visited. “Liquor offences, which are things like under-age consumption of alcohol and open containers in the street, were big targets for us,” he said. “We got onto it early and identified the youths and groups we thought would give us grief. “We were well planned this year but Torquay did need a lot more attention than anywhere else around Geelong, Surf Coast and the Bellarine.” Sen Sgt Ferrara said the use of firecrackers also “stood out” as a real problem this year. Tarneit father of two Carlos Rodriguez, 34, died in hospital this week after a firework exploded in his face at a New Year’s Eve celebration. Sen Sgt Ferrara said the incident was a chilling reminder of how dangerous the illegal crackers could be. Three people were charged with firework offences in Torquay, he said. “We had one unfortunate incident where some unknown people set off a firecracker near one of our mounted patrol horses and the uniformed rider was thrown to the ground. “These kids may have thought it was a bit of fun but someone could have been seriously injured.” In Geelong police arrested 19 drunks and handed out 33 liquor related fines. Across Victoria police arrested 237 people for being drunk and caught 66 drink drivers over the night as part of various operations. Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said the majority of people celebrated the start of the new year in a responsible way. “We will continue to target antisocial behaviour as well as drink driving over the holiday period so if you intend to cause trouble, we will be there to catch you,” Mr Walshe said. Last year almost 400 people were arrested for being drunk in Victoria on New Year’s Eve.

Toxic shock as dogs bite toadies Josipovic said council workers would “take an extra pro-active approach” to protecting animals and children on the beach. “We will put up warning signs because it’s better to be safe than sorry,” he said. Newtown vet Jane Miller said even when dead, toadfish contained the deadly poison tetrodotoxin which caused convulsions and paralysis when
ingested by animals and children. “Death can be really rapid and a lot of animals don’t make it to the vet in time. They have a very nasty smell so dogs are attracted to them,” she said. South Geelong’s Elly McDonald told the Independent her parents’ two-year-old standard poodle would be confined to a lead for the rest of summer after having her stomach pumped last week.
“She needs a lot of exercising but there is nowhere else we can go where somebody doesn’t have a problem with us being there.” Ms McDonald said she suspected the dead toadfish were washing up on Queenscliff’s beach after fishermen threw them overboard. But Queenscliff Fishing Charters skipper Tim Biviano denied recreational fishermen were at fault. “We come in close to the
Queenscliff dog beach, but we’re trawling for salmon. At no stage is it ever possible for us to catch a pufferfish while we’re doing that,” he said. “Because Queenscliff is at the start of the bay, a lot of things wash up on the beaches. “A pufferfish washed up on the beach could have come from anywhere because they float.” Fisheries Victoria’s Travis
Dowling said the agency had no reports of fishermen dumping dead toadfish in Queenscliff’s waters but some fishermen had killed the fish instead of returning them. “It’s an offence under fisheries regulations to intentionally kill and discard toadfish in Victorian waters, rather than return them to the water with the least possibly of injury,” Mr Dowling said.

LOCAL surf life saving club members are lining up to sign on for the Independent Superkidz Triathlon. The all-abilities event is part of the Geelong Multi Sport Festival on the city’s waterfront from February 10 to 12. Jan Juc SLSC family members Brian and Lisa Happ and their two girls, seven year old Jasmine and Kyalla, nine, are looking forward to the event. Lisa said the girls were involved in competition training and the surf education program at Jan Juc. “They’ve been busy over the Christmas break and started training back in November for the state championships in Lorne in March. “So they do a lot of swimming and running as part of their surf
training, and as a family we do a fair bit of bike riding, so it fits in perfectly. “Plus the kids love doing three activities in one event and get a lot of fun out of it.” Lisa said the all-abilities format was attractive to parents. “It’s not a competitive thing, so it doesn’t matter where your child comes, it’s just for the fun of it.” She said the girls were also members at Grovedale Little
Athletics and Geelong Swimming Club and were keen to get some of their friends to enter the triathlon as well. “We’ll recruit a few of their fellow runners and swimmers to get into it as well,” Lisa laughed. “There aren’t that many events around purely focussed on the kids, especially ones that are more about participation than competing and that’s the key, just getting them involved. “Brian and I both coach and its events like this that keeps kids together and interested. “It’s a little bit different and adds excitement, plus they learn about different events and get to do some different practice.” More information about the Multi Sport Festival, including the Superkidz triathlon, is available at geelongmultisport.com.au.

We’re happy with police – report claims

BY ERIN PEARSON AND LAURA WAKELY GEELONG and Surf Coast police have received record high public satisfaction and safety reviews revealed in statistics provided to the Independent. The results, outlining community confidence in police and perceptions of safety on public transport for the September quarter, saw Geelong rank above neighbouring areas. Geelong’s general satisfaction result was 72.5 per cent, confidence in police 79.8 per cent and perception of safety on public transport during the day 88.2 per cent. The Surf Coast received a 78.5 per cent general satisfaction result, confidence in police 89.3 per cent and perceptions of safety in the neighbourhood 97.5 per cent.

Geelong Superintendent Paul Pottage said police were pleased with the results after a challenging 2011 which saw a spike in burglaries and thefts from cars. “Leadership and political issues that affect police can affect perceptions of police locally but our results are steadily getting better which we are extremely happy about,” he said. “We’ve done a lot of work with public order issues recently and anyone who’s visited the Geelong CDB on weekends of late would have seen improvements in behaviour. “The public need to see the police out being proactive also and we plan on more operations to combat bad behaviour.” Supt Pottage said the Geelong and Surf Coast units had dedicated a lot of time to dealing with badly behaving schoolies to reduce “needless” offences.
He said the force was committed to ensuring the community felt safe and confident in the police’s ability to combat crime. Geelong Safety Committee chair John Frame said for a long time the committee’s monthly meetings focused only on safety issues in central Geelong, but a change in behaviour meant they were now tackling issues such as domestic violence. Mr Frame, a former assistant police commissioner, said he was pleased to see perceptions heading in the right direction. “There are still negative accounts happening but overall we’re seeing offending dropping away,” he said. “The Monday morning headlines of gutters full of blood have disappeared and that will also help people’s perceptions.”

Mr Davis said the Prevention Community Model – an obesity and chronic disease prevention plan – would benefit 1.3 million people across 14 municipalities in Victoria. He said detailed demographic and health data from the Victorian Population Health Survey would be used to determine Geelong’s key health challenges.
“There will be a range of programs to ensure healthy choices are easy for individuals, families and communities, and each of the communities will have a vital role in determining what best suits their local needs,” Mr Davis said. “There will be a focus on local programs specifically designed to improve children’s health and wellbeing. “Programs will also target adults who have tapered off their health and fitness, and encourage them to take the steps needed to restore their lifestyle and wellbeing.”

SOME may call them nerds, even geeks, but international champions from across the globe prefer to be seen as highly intelligent. The Geelong Chess Club is hosting the Australian Chess Championships for the first time, with many of the 120 competitors travelling from as far as Bulgaria, China and Canada to vie for the title. “It’s like the Australian Tennis Open of chess,” club member Sam Sopovski said. “It’s an opportunity for Geelong to be put on the map a bit as far as chess goes because we’re trying to get chess re-established in popularity here. “It’s been going fantastically so far.” The competitors, ranging in age from 12 to 50, battle across 11 rounds to determine a final winner. Mr Sopovski said chess was a great way to stimulate the mind. “It’s like you’re in a boxing ring, nobody else can help you, it’s you against them,” he said. “A lot of us passionate chess people are getting on in years and want to leave something here for others to enjoy. “We’ve enjoyed it so much over the years and want to give something back. Having the competition here is a massive deal for Geelong.” Mr Sopovski said many matches took more than five hours to complete with no breaks permitted, adding to the tension and challenge of

BY ERIN PEARSON THREE Geelong teens narrowly avoided a pre New Years Eve tragedy after a ute rolled onto their tent at Lorne’s Falls Festival last week, according to witnesses. Lauren Monahan and Sophie Mildren of Newtown and Eliza Greig of Wandana Heights, were asleep in their tent during the early hours of December 30 when the ute slid down a hill trapping two of the girls. Ms Greig said the three were lucky to survive. “I felt the impact hard on my back and then all I could hear was screaming. My leg was stuck under the car,” she said. “Lauren went into survival mode and ripped open the tent to help me out but we couldn’t get to Sophie. “It was the most terrifying thing.” Ms Grieg said the girls, all 19, were left battered and bruised but miraculously escaped serious injury. School building boost creates jobs McAdam VCAT ‘victory’ claims THE 71 BUILDING the Education Revolution projects in Australia’s most marginal electorate of Corangamite are 99 per cent complete. Corangamite received $130 million from the Federal government’s economic stimulus fund. Corio’s 54 schools received $102 million and are 74 per cent complete. The figures were released by Corio MP Richard Marles as the latest project completion was announced at Whittington Primary School. Whittington PS received $925,000 used to completely remodel the inside of the school and buy a new boiler and computer whiteboards. “The old pokey classrooms have been expanded into larger, more flexible learning spaces,� Mr Marles said. The announcement was one of a “wave� of school building openings in recent weeks, Mr Marles said. The $16.2 billion Building the Education Revolution program aimed to modernise school infrastructure while supporting local jobs and stimulating investment, he said. “Corio now has 17 new libraries, 23 new school halls, dozens of new classrooms, language centres, ICT centres, science labs, gymnasiums, outdoor learning areas and refurbished playgrounds.� Mr Marles said the BER part-funded the state of the art Katsumata Centre at Kardinia International College, winning a regional builder of the year award for Lyons Construction. “Lyons Construction worked on 11 schools in the Corio electorate, each supporting an average of 25 tradespeople.
MOTORCYCLING Australia has claimed success after recent a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal ruling on McAdam Park. Motorcycling Australia boss David White said he was “delighted with the determination�. But the community group fighting expansion of the facility, Barrabool Rural Protection Group, also hailed the VCAT ruling as an “important victory�.
VCAT ruled that extensive building and track works at the motocross complex were unlawfully completed without planning permits. Mr White said Motorcycling Australia would apply for retrospective planning permits for the existing work and buildings early this year. Mr White said he welcomed the decision as a “positive step forward�.

WITH the internet, emails and texting changing they way we interact these days, one local group is keeping face to face socialising alive. Coasters Social Group celebrates its second birthday in two weeks, with a myriad of social events in Geelong and Bellarine under its belt. Founder Virginia Cooke says she can look back on a successful two years with the group now boasting 100 members ranging in age from 23 to 71. “People join social groups for all sorts of reasons – because they’re new to an area, or to broaden their social circle or because their circumstances have changed and their friendship group have moved on,” Virginia said. She formed the group as a way of getting out and discovering the wide range of things to do in the region, in good company. “As I’m partnered myself, I wanted to start a social group that wasn’t just for single people. “When people join Coasters, they tell me they don’t have to worry about not having anyone to go to a particular event with because there’s a group already going,” Virginia said. Coasters members host events to appeal to both men and women every weekend and some week nights, including dinners, band nights, trivia, movies, regular Friday
Council meetings will operate on a varied timetable during December and January. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 31 January 2012 commencing at 7.00pm at City Hall.

CONTRARY to what Dave Campbell (Independent, December 16) asserts, there is no clear evidence to show global warming is happening. In a stunning turn of events data released by NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies now shows the four warmest years ever recorded occurred in the 1930s, not in the last decade, with the warmest year on record being 1934 (not 1998). The claim that we have just lived through the warmest decade in recent history was the justification for the Gillard government bringing in its carbon tax. Yet only four of the top 10 warmest years occurred in the past 10 years (1998, 1999, 2006). The years 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2004 were cooler than the year 1900. If a Martian came down to Earth and was observing the climate debate he would rightly conclude western governments are completely nuts. Instead of challenging the three most influential bodies driving the global warming theory to prove their case, they have allowed them to get away with fudging the figures and conned governments into spending tens of billions on addressing a perceived threat like human induced global warming. Going down the green road of expensive renewable energy will not ensure a better future for our children. On the contrary it will bequeath to them a much higher cost of living, diminishing job opportunities and a total mistrust of science as the case for global warming will be shown to be a total sham. Geelong is a joke by comparison. The 10 per cent so-called service charge by Cabcharge to process EFT payments is a racket pure and simple. Why should I have to pay extra to use my own money? The cab companies are not offering EFT as a convenience to me. They are doing it because without it, they would lose business as people walk that extra distance rather than take a taxi. I hope the RBA get on to this very soon and outlaw the practice. While they are at it they can reduce the service charge on credit transactions. Ten percent is simply extortion. Weed out cancer NOT MANY people are aware that Jim Stynes’ brain cancers were melanomas. That’s right – skin cancer. Some skin carcinomas are just that –- on or in the outer layers of the skin. However, if not watched carefully and treated, they can turn into melanomas. Melanomas go deep and can connect with the blood stream. Holding on to good intentions WITH MANDY FISHER nce again Christmas has been and gone and with the advent of 2012 it is usually time for making New Year resolutions. On the top of the list is usually losing weight due to Christmas overeating. Unfortunately statistics show that commitment to resolutions wane after the first month and only 20 per cent maintain them past Valentine’s Day. One of the reasons for this is that we try to change too much, too quickly and set unattainable goals. We want to lose kilos quickly, but unfortunately we fall off the wagon, get disheartened and the kilos go back on just as quickly. If we aim to lose 0.2 of a kilo per week, over the

THIS year I was one of the fortunate ones able to choose to spend my first Christmas Day, along with my daughter and dozens of other volunteers, helping out at the Geelong Community Christmas Day Dinner held at the Christ Church Hall. The St Vincent de Paul Society has run the Geelong Community Christmas Day Dinner for over 10 years, helping the disadvantaged share in some festive celebration. About 140 people flooded through the doors on Christmas day. This day would not be possible without the direction, drive, dedication and tenacity of one very special man, Peter Chiang and his loyal team of volunteers. As coordinator of the event, Peter worked tirelessly and unselfishly to bring happiness to others less fortunate than he. One member is looking down the barrel of being a grandfather when two others don’t even have kids,” he said. “I think the band will be lucky to survive this tour, I think it could all blow up at any time.” Despite the ups and downs of recent times, Hollow said he was excited about a return to Geelong regardless of his football allegiances. Recently back from an interstate run with new album Dark Magic; the remarkable group has a plethora of members from all walks of life. Singer-guitarist Andrew Tanner once recorded an album with legendary producer T-Bone Burnett and wrote music in Hollywood with renowned actor Jeff Bridges. Guitarist Ben Michael was a child star actor in TV shows Skyways and the Henderson Kids. Ben Michael, 40, recently completed a doctorate in gender studies while bassist Christopher Hollow once played AFL football for St Kilda.

Place coconut milk in a pan with ginger, lemongrass and half the chilli. Bring to the boil over medium heat, then simmer over low heat for 2 minutes or until thickened (it will be quite thick). Set aside for 30 minutes to infuse, then strain into a large bowl, pressing down well on solids. Discard solids, then stir in yoghurt, mint, lime zest and juice, and remaining chilli. Add the prawns, lobster and crabmeat to the bowl with the coconut dressing and toss to coat well. A revamp of the entertainment program will see popular Melbourne cover band Glam Slam play at the Sphinx every month for as long as the crowd demands. Their next show is on January 14 and it is set to be popular. The Sphinx’s PR and events coordinator, Mary-Anne O’Malley says Glam Slam has been attracting a huge crowd aged from 18 to people in their 50s. “Every time they play people ask when they’re coming back, so they’ll be here for as long as people want them around.” Mary-Anne says a strictly neat casual dress code with no runners or workboots has ensured the Sphinx has upped its reputation for having a great crowd atmosphere.

“There’s no riff raff and we’re strict on ID, which means the crowd coming now is different to before and they keep coming back.” The Sphinx Hotel is an ideal spot for anything from going out on a Saturday night to a mid-week meal because of its fringe central Geelong location. This year the Sphinx will host at least two bands every month on Saturday nights, while the other weekends will remain disco nights. The Sphinx Hotel provides a taste of Egypt in the heart of Geelong. The Luxor Lounge, a fantastic conference and function room has flourished because it has a large dance floor. folding up against the side of the vehicle and robbing the boot of some volume. The downside is that the Prado wagon is now a seven-seater instead of an eightseater, because the rearmost seat only has space for two. Off-road the new suspension works brilliantly, virtually switching to a different mechanical mode to give much greater wheel travel. Complement that with advanced traction electronics, that are more and more complex as you pay extra for the high-end models, and the Prado upholds its reputation as being a real 4WD in a vehicle class that’s mainly occupied by pretenders. We drove several Toyota Prados up and down extremely steep slopes, through slimy waterholes, on slippery gravel, over rocky ledges – and they just kept going and going. Brilliant and certainly the vehicle for someone who wants to do some real offroad work. Styling of the new Toyota Prado is chunky and modern, yet the designers have done an excellent job in also making it look like a solid evolution of the previous model. Power comes from revised versions of the engines used in the outgoing model. The 4.0-litre petrol V6 now produces 202 kW, and 381 Nm at 4400 rpm. That torque peak is high revs but a lot of work has gone into fattening out the torque graph in the low to mid end of the scale. However, the added weight of the 2010 Prado wagon, between 150 and 200 kg depending on the variant means the engine works hard to keep the vehicle flowing when climbing on-road hills, and you need to plan for a decent stretch of road when overtaking. The 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel is likely to be the bigger seller. A modern common-rail unit, it puts out 127 kW at just 3400 revs. Diesel torque of 410 Newton metres is available at a very useful band that runs from 1600 to 2800 rpm, in other words most drivers will have the torque at its peak most of the time. Six-speed manual and a tiptronic-type five-speed automatic transmission are offered with both engines, though not in all model variants. Drive is permanently to all four wheels with – of course – a two-speed transfer box. The five-door Prado wagon is sold in four models: GX, GXL, VX and Kakadu. The sportier Prado three-door comes tagged as an XR or ZR.

BY EWAN KENNEDY ustralia is an extremely important market for the Toyota Prado, ours being the second largest in the world in sales volume for the tough ladder-frame 4WD. So it came as no surprise to learn that the Prado’s chief engineer, Makoto Arimoto, came to Australia for two extended visits with test vehicles in the early stages of development of the allnew fourth-generation Prado. After covering in excess of 100,000 kilometres Arimoto-san and his team (comprising both Japanese and Australian engineers) made numerous changes to suit our local market. To the extent that he told us during the press launch that Australian imports of the Prado are virtually a unique design to suit our country’s harsh driving conditions. And, of course, set up to suit Aussie drivers’ preferences. It’s because of that sort of commitment that the Japanese marque is number-one in this country in overall vehicle sales by a large margin. It also explains why almost 150,000 Prados have been sold to Australians in the past thirteen years. (By the way, before anyone tells us this is the third-generation Prado, not the fourth, we should point out that the firstgeneration didn’t make it downunder.) The 2010 Toyota Prado is being imported not only with the usual fivedoor station wagon body, but also in three-door sporty format. That’s an interesting move considering that arch-rival Mitsubishi has just discontinued imports of its three-door Pajero. We road tested both the three- and five-door Prado models extensively during the press launch from Sydney to Orange in western NSW – and most admit that we fell in love with the threedoor. We found the three-door Prado to be nimbler, lighter and more enjoyable to drive than its larger brother, and really like its styling – it’s always easier to make a three-door look better than a five. But we must admit that the extra seats and added practicality of the big wagon do make it a horses-for-courses decision. Prado in five-door wagon format is larger and heavier than ever before. The new cabin has excellent room that can be shared amongst the occupants because the centre row seats can slide back and forward. The back seats now fold flat when they are not required to increase the alreadygood load area. This is a big improvement on the previous model which had its rearmost seats

Sizzling summer of fishing on the bay On the bite BRIAN LONG SNAPPER, whiting and redfin captures have been nothing short of spectacular over the past couple of weeks. Anglers have seen plenty of snapper ranging up to 3kg in weight while fishing soft plastics from the inshore grass beds between Clifton Springs and Alcoa Pier. Pike numbers are still running high and hard bodied bibbed lures trolled in three to four metres of water between Hermsley and Leopold are your best bet. Fishing the Wilson Spit area Rick Maes and Danny Clapinski found any number of fish to 2.5kg. This same area produced three quality snapper for Paul Slater while trolling tail dancer lures, his best a ripper of 6.3kg. Whiting captures from the Stingaree spoil grounds has improved with most fish around 32cms and readily taking baits of pippies and fresh squid. Fishing the entrance to Swan Bay Eddy Sharp not only found whiting to 40cms but numbers of leatherjacket, garfish and flathead. His best flathead weighed 2.6kg and was taken on whitebait suspended under a small float just off the bottom. Close in at Edwards Point anglers also found squid with the best captures just before or just after sunrise. Small natural coloured jigs have been a favourite of late, size 2.5 being ideal. Salmon have been found in Swan Bay as well as in the Rip. While not always visible, slow trolling will soon locate them and once found, casting and retriev-

Greg Carmichael found pinkie snapper at Black Rock, with most just under a kilogram and came right on the bite an hour before dark, landing two big whiting as a bonus. A lure casting session by Harry Moore at the left hand end of Fairhaven beach saw a nice bag of salmon; most were around 900 grams but he did finish with three fish all over 1.5kg. Bream are still to be caught within the Barwon River estuary but bait choice is critical with bass yabby, sandworm or shrimp your only real options. Two hours either side of high tide has seen all the best captures. Fishing the rocks between Lorne pier and the main beach, Xavier Mathews landed nine whiting on squid strips just prior to sunset, all over 35cms. The Barwon River in Geelong is still discoloured but fish are quite easy to snare. Corn or bread fished unweighted on a number four hook with plenty of berley
