Three generations, 90-plus years of service Quality products, customer service, commited to the future BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer

What began in 1929 as a blacksmith shop in Bertha that once attracted customers from as far away as their horses would carry them, today continues to attract customers from more than 100 miles away. Harms Manufacturing is a company that’s been handed down for three generations. It specializes in manufacturing large-scale, heavy-duty equipment. The company makes everything from 1/2-ton to 20-ton hay wagons, bale racks, land rollers and dump rock wagons. They have land rollers all across the United States including Florida, Virginia and Oregon. “Our wagons are the best trailing wagons out there because of the things we do to the front end,” Tim Harms said. “It’s a heavy-duty product and that’s the way we build all our products.” In addition to the large-scale work, the company also does custom work, fashion-

ing small parts, welding, working on the lathe and crafting intricate pieces to exact specifications provided by the customer. Sometimes, Harms said, the customer comes in with an idea and they work together to create the solution. “We’re kind of a job shop, we do a lot of repair work,” Harms said. “We do lathe work and welding and create a new spindle or a part, replacing something that’s worn out, cutting it, fitting it and using the lathe to turn things down. It’s always something different and it’s a challenge to satisfy the customers; some have obsolete machines.” Harms said the shop has made everything from a bell tower carillon to parts that help someone build a completely new contraption. “I enjoy getting the job done and getting it done right so these guys can get back to work,” said Harms, manager of Harms Manufacturing Inc. The work is always different and Harms said

when it comes to their equipment, they build it with spindles that don’t break and bushing parts that can be greased, keeping everything performing at its best. Harms has designed and manufactured more than 2,000 land rollers; they’ve also built more than 5,000 wagons. “People that know our name trust, when they come back, they’re going to get either their machinery fixed right or, if they buy one of our products, they can trust it’s going to last,” Harms said. The key to creating great product, Harms said, is to have happy employees. He works to treat his employees like family. “We’re all on the same team,” he said. That team started with family and still continues with family. Wally Harms, Tim Harms’ father, led the company beginning in 1963 and at the age of 82 he still goes in for work each and every day. Harms’ 23-year-old son, Jordan, also works for the company.

Tim Harms, of Harms Manufacturing, stands near some land roller drums the company uses in production of their equipment. The company was founded by his grandfather in 1929 and started as a blacksmith shop. PHOTO SUBMITTED The company began as a blacksmith shop started by Harms’ grandfather in 1929. In 1936 they made their first wagon out of old, used car parts. In the

beginning, they created horse-drawn machinery and did horse-shoeing and forge work. Through the years the business has developed as farm machinery has modern-

ized and improved, making equipment now that makes it easier for farmers to do the work that’s essential to their livelihood.

Safety Man Advice...

THE MOST DANGEROUS JOB IN THE WORLD? FARMING!

While farming is a rewarding profession, it also brings with it hazards unique from other occupations. Almost 200 farm workers are injured each day.

The TOP 5 Dangers on a Farm Safety Man is brought to you by Elmdale Farmers Mutual Insurance, Inc. We’ve been standing behind Central Minnesota farmers and homeowners for over 100 years.

PLEASE BE SAFE THIS YEAR!

5. Grain Bins: In just 20 seconds you can sink and become engulfed. With an average time of 4 hours for emergency responders to rescue you, it’s no surprise there is a 62% fatality rate. 4. Electrocution: 62 farmers each year die from electrocution. Contacting equipment with power lines is the most common risk. Remember to look up. 3. Corn Pickers & Combines: Be aware that if you are trying to unjam a roller, it takes only a 1/2 second for your hand holding a stalk 3 ft. long to reach the rollers. 2. PTO’s (Power Take Off ): Use your protective guards and remove loose clothing. 1. Tractor Rollovers: Heavy machines combined with uneven terrains are a recipe for disaster. Even experienced operators have been involved in a rollover.

Assistant commissioner Place to speak on markets, commodities, hemp BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer

Whitney Place will discuss markets, commodities and the state of agriculture as a keynote speaker at this year’s 2020 Central Minnesota Farm Show. Place, assistant commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, will speak on potential areas of economic growth in Minnesota including industrial hemp, as well as provide an update on some invasive species in the state. “We’re talking about the importance of agriculture, of the agricultural economy in Minnesota and where we rank despite the bad prices, a tough harvest and tough planting season,” Place said. Agriculture, she said, continues to be the cornerstone of Minnesota’s economy with 68,500 farms actively in production in the state. The agricultural industry supports 430,000 jobs across Minnesota and has an economic impact of $112 billion. “Even though our farms are struggling right now, which is no small thing, agriculture remains a very strong sector of Minnesota’s economy,” Place said. Bulk fluids program saves time, money “It’s a big money savings over buying pails or barrels,” Domjahn said. BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer

Midwest Machinery has 17 locations throughout Minnesota and offers a bulk fluids program to farmers, saving them time and money. “They have a lot on their plates at all times,” said Dan Domjahn, the parts manager of the Howard Lake location. The company offers both engine oil and hydraulic fluid for delivery right to the farm, eliminating the need for farmers to lug, load and unload 55-gallon barrels from town. Additionally, the program provides as much as a $4/per gallon savings on HyGard oil and $5.45/per gallon savings on 15w40 Plus 50 II oil. “We meet with the customer to determine their needs,” Domjahn said. To begin bulk delivery, customers simply purchase the bulk fluid system from Midwest Machinery. Each system includes a stackable tote, the necessary hoses, valves and an accompanying drip tray. Totes are available in 35-70 or 120-gallons for engine oil and/or hydraulic fluid. The systems are available at cost to customers as long as they purchase the oil from Midwest Machinery. “It’s a big money savings over buying pails or barrels,” Domjahn said. Additionally, Domjahn said, it’s a big convenience for customers. A simple call to Midwest Machinery triggers a scheduled visit to refill oil and/or hydraulic fluid. Customers can be home for delivery but don’t need to be. With permission, the driver can refill supplies while the farmer tends to other tasks. The delivery trucks are equipped with a large hose reel allowing drivers to provide service to nearly any location on the farm. The company offers John Deere 15w40 Plus 50 II oil for members on the program. When used with a John Deere filter, in a John Deere engine, the oil only needs to be changed once a year or once every 500 hours, whichever comes first. “John Deere makes oil to protect their equipment,” Domjahn said. “It meets and exceeds all recommendations.” The end result, Domjahn said, is when used properly, in conjunction

Chem-Star’s new Pure 3000 treatment significantly improves dairy water BY BEN SONNEK Staff Writer

For years, Chem-Star has been a leader in udder health and dairy sanitation, starting with five dealers in Wisconsin in 1992 and growing to 27 dealers out of not only Wisconsin but also Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa. Today, one of their newest products, Pure 3000, is changing the way they clean up the drinking water for cows and calves – just by changing the chemical solution. “We’ve got a quality product and a quality service,” said Scott Horton, Chem-Star general manager. “We’re really hands-on with our dealers, so we’re out to help meet the dairy’s milk quality goals.” Before the Pure 3000 became a part of Chem-Star’s product portfolio, their team monitored a group of Wisconsin dairy veterinarians for about three years. Chem-Star had been using a hydrogen peroxide for their water treatment systems for many years. Hydrogen peroxide does work and Chem-Star still distributes it, but they did find the chlorine dioxide formula produced much cleaner water and healthier cows and calves. “Chlorine dioxide is a product that we’ve had some experience with on the cow end as a teat dip,” said Jody Larson, Chem-Star sales manager. “Chlorine dioxide has a much faster, broader spectrum germicidal kill; it’s the gold standard in teat dips today. What we found was that same principle also applies to the water treatment end. It kills more bacteria and removed impurities like iron, manganese and sulfur. Plus, the product is safe.”

Pure 3000 itself is chlorine dioxide solubilized in water, with no base or activator, available in 5, 15, 30- and 55-gallon drums, as well as 265-gallon totes. A ready-to-use product, it requires no mixing or other extra steps; a pump injects the solution into the water line. In early 2019, Pure 3000 underwent trials on dairy farms, and the results were very noticeable. In all cases, there were improvements when compared to hydrogen peroxide. “Pure 3000 is being used on a dairy in central Wisconsin, and they are very satisfied with the results they are seeing,” said Miranda Nelson, ChemStar sales support manager. “The dairy has high iron and manganese in their water. The main rea-

son they started using the product was because they couldn’t get water to the farthest water in the barn. Treatment was started to clean out and unplug the water lines, and since starting treatment, they are able to get clean pure water to every water trough in the facility. Water intakes of the cattle have significantly increased, cow health has improved and somatic cell has dropped.” The treatment has been found to be highly effective against Prototheca, Staph Aureus and Mycoplasma, as well as removing harmful metals in the water, including iron, sulfur and manganese. Chlorine dioxide, unlike straight chlorine, is not a carcinogen, and it produces a better tasting water which reduces the risk of cows or calves developing respiratory issues, scours, crypto, salmonella or E. coli. “We’re finding E. coli in second-use tanks, like plate cooler water, and (Pure 3000) will kill bacteria in that tank also,” Larson said. “With calves, we’re killing more bacteria, so we’re seeing less of a sickness rate.” Chem-Star encourages dairy businesses to consider a Pure 3000 treatment t“There’s nothing more critical to the operation of your dairy than quality water,” said Ben Raasch, Chem-Star sales manager. “I would certainly think it would be worth investing in a product to improve the quality of the water. That’s where I think this product has worked really well for us.” For more information, you can visit the Chem-Star website at http://chemstarworks. com or follow them on Facebook at https://www. facebook.com/chemstarworks.

Options to meet our customers’ needs! BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer

Josh Knudtson, the general manager of Woller Equipment in Upsala, stands in front of a Deutz Fahr 6215 tractor. Deutz Fahr is one of the many equipment brands they carry. PHOTOS SUBMITTED Woller Equipment in Upsala is a short-line dealer offering farming products from a variety of brand lines. The company can outfit every need, meeting the demands of everyone from a full-time, professional farmer to those of a hobbyist. “We want to figure out how to help you on your farm and provide

a product that is going to benefit you, not just make a sale,” said Josh Knudtson, the general manager and the sole salesperson for the company. Knudtson spends time with each farmer who enters the door, asking questions so he can fully understand a farmer’s operation and give them options on equipment that truly meets their specific needs. Knudtson studies each of the machines he sells, learning everything he can about skid loaders, tractors, TMR mixers, manure spreaders and haying equipment including balers, rakes and mowers. Woller Equipment offers the Vermeer line of ag equipment including hay tools, and now TMR mixers and manure spreaders from Kuhn, Anderson bale wrappers, LS Tractors, and Wacker Neuson The company’s line is continually expanding and they offer everything from 22 hp tractors to, now with the addition of the Deutz Fahr line, models top-

ping out at 340 hp. Each line and each piece of equipment offers unique features that may benefit one customer better than another. From CVT transmissions to auto steering and a 37-mph road speed, the options allow farmers to be more efficient where it counts. “Everything we sell, we vet to ensure it is a high-quality product,” Knudtson said. The level of service Woller gives to its customers is the reason Andrew Winkels, marketing manager of Deutz-Fahr, was attracted to the

company. Deutz-Fahr was looking to return its brand to the Midwest in a big way and wanted to be sure any dealers they partnered with were customer focused. “Josh definitely fit our mold of how we want to do business; they are a service-first organization,” Winkels said. “We want to make sure the customers have a good experience with the product so we can continue to grow.” The employees at Woller Equipment work to create relationships with customers and they support their needs by

stocking maintenance and wear parts in their parts department for convenience. The equipment company has an after-hours number so customers can reach the company with urgent needs. “We want them to know they really do matter to us,” Knudtson said. “In the day and age we live in right now, we all want to be able to live an uninterrupted life and keep going with whatever we’re doing. DownWoller Equipment not only offers equipment time can be very costly sales but repairs, parts and service on-site. This to customers.” The company offers is a peek inside the repair shop.

repairs, sales, parts and service on site, employing two full-time technicians who are up-todate on trainings in the latest equipment. For Woller, a commitment to service comes down to building longterm relationships. “If we can build someone’s trust it makes it more convenient for them,” Knudtson said. “Everybody prefers to go somewhere they’re known and they don’t have to start over every time they come through the door.”

Woeste Custom Harvesting Custom Forage Harvesting of Hay and Corn Silage

At Upper Midwest Pumping we offer timely, professional, and sought-after manure application services. Running multiple crews, utilizing our own equipment, having miles of hose, and operating with enough pumps to effectively reach far fields, we are your leading source for efficient manure pumping. We understand the ins and outs of the agricultural industry as well as manure handling. We’ve opted to specialize in drag hose application, which reduces the need for continuous back-and-forth travel – in turn, reducing overall work time and field disturbance. Operating with a 10-inch diameter hose and large pumps we are able to efficiently move as many gallons of liquid manure as possible per hour. Paired with that, we run three crews, and operate 24-hours a day throughout spring and fall. Just like the farm owners we serve, our work day doesn’t end when the sun goes down.

We serve dairy, beef, and hog operations of any size - from small family-run farms to large corporate enterprises. Contact us to arrange one-time or on-going manure pumping services.

Wilmes to speak on farm stress

Quality Products Available From Worms

Works as director of Rural Stress Taskforce statewide. BY SARAH COLBURN Staff Writer

The morning after a local farmer committed suicide his friend was talking with Emily Wilmes of t the Stearns, Benton and Morrison County Extension Office and asked her t what she was going to do about it. “He and I were talking through it and he was t so upset, and hearing the pain in his voice was so hard for me,” Wilmes said. The 29-year-old took r it as a personal challenge r and now sits as the director of the Rural Stress Taskforce statewide. Wilmes will be speaking on farm stress at the 2020 Central Minnesota Farm Show. She’ll talk about the nature of farm stress, how people can recognize signs of stress in themselves and others, how they can express their concern and offer resources to those in need. In the last six years as commodity prices have dipped, debt loads have increased and farmers have experienced an extremely wet spring and fall, with some unable to plant at all, while others have yielded smaller harvests, the concern about the impact of farm stress has grown. Farming has always elicited a certain level of stress related to a variety of sources such as potential disease, machinery breakdowns, working in isolation and working long hours, but Wilmes said this became a new kind of stress. “We humans are naturally designed to handle some stress and sometimes it’s motivating for us but, when it gets to be so much, it becomes overwhelming and affects our ability to take it in and see it clearly,” Wilmes said. In April of 2019 the statewide taskforce was formed with Wilmes at

the helm. Calls about stress and farming needs/ concerns had been coming into the Extension Office at a rapid clip and the Dean of Extension quickly realized the need to address farm stress statewide. Wilmes had been focusing on the topic on her own accord, adding conversations about mental health and stress management into her public speaking engagements, radio clips and the weekly articles she wrote for area publications. She hosted an Extension service program, “Farming in Tough Times,” where she talked about stress, building resilience and mental health, topics she knew were taboo. The phone conversation with her friend the farmer is what sparked it all. “It was this moment where I thought, here’s a farmer who truly believes that I could do something,” she said. “It was really a tipping point for me.” Her first public event on the topic garnered a crowd of 80 and there was so much interest she knew she couldn’t stop there. “People want this, they desire this, people are

listening,” she said. Farm stress, she said, goes beyond the typical signs of stress: headaches, stomach aches and being very angry, sad or bitter. Sometimes, she said, there are behavioral signs as people turn to alcohol or drug use to cope with the tension. Other times, she said, they’re irritable, lack focus, have difficulty making simple decisions, question their self-worth and can feel like a burden or a failure. “If you’re concerned about somebody, speak up,” she said. “Say something. It can be uncomfortable but a lot of people when they’re under a lot of stress or feeling depressed or anxious, feel incredibly isolated and alone and that no one cares or understands. Just acknowledge them and say ‘Hey, I see you’re struggling with this right now, I’m somebody who cares and wants to listen. What do you want me to know about what you’ve been going through?” The simple act of asking, she said, reminds them they have somebody in their life who cares and wants them to be healthy. Across the board, not just in farming, she said mental health is such a stigmatized topic but now there’s an opening for discussion and an interest. She focuses on how to make the topic more approachable and she shares her own story as well as tips on how to get people more comfortable talking about mental health. As she has continued in her work, she said, farmers often reach out to her to share their stories and their struggles. Often, she said, it’s the first time they’ve shared their struggles beyond their immediate family. “It’s just so amazing, it’s so great, it brings me so much joy, it just makes it all worth it,” Wilmes said.

Looking for help for yourself, a family member or friend? There are many good-quality resources available online through the Minnesota Extension Service and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. These are mental health professionals farmers can see absolutely free of charge with no paperwork or insurance billing. Their site can be found at www.z.umn.edu/ruralstress. • The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has created a site at www. Mnfarmstress.com. • The Minnesota Farm and Rural Helpline is free, confidential and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
