DPS

Continue from page 3 no insurance and seat belt/child safety seat usage. DPS patrols also resulted in 219 driving while intoxicated arrests, 127 fugitive arrests and 94 felony arrests during the same time period. DPS offers the following tips for safe travel during the Thanksgiving holiday: •Don’t drink and drive. Designate a driver or take a cab. •Slow down – especially in bad weather, construction areas and heavy traffic. •Eliminate distractions, including the use of mobile devices. •Buckle up everyone in the vehicle – it’s the law. •Slow down or move over for police, fire, EMS and Texas Department of Transportation vehicles and tow trucks that are stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated – it’s the law. Also, show the same courtesy to fellow drivers stopped along the road if it is safe to do so. •Don’t drive fatigued – get plenty of rest before trips or take breaks as needed.

•Drive defensively, as holiday travel may present additional challenges. •Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained before your trip begins.

The Molina Foundation grant founder recently invited the library director: Mrs. Adelina G. Villarreal, to encourage all the district librarians to apply for a foundation grant per campus. Out of the 15 schools, 4 were awarded over 700+ books individually. Librarians: Mrs. Velma Guerrero, Mrs. Cindy Solis, Miss Elma Garza, and Mrs. Belinda Pena are extremely grateful to their administration, colleagues and are amazed at the generosity of Dr. Martha Molina Bernadett founder. They are also grateful to Mr. Lupito Garza warehouse manager and his crew for all their assistance on securing the books back to the respective campuses. Remember: Readers are Leaders. What a great way to start the holiday season by reading.

GHS and GMS ACE Program gives thanks to Grulla community by celebrating a traditional parent/student holiday dinner prepared by Texas ACE students and staff . Kerri O’ Conner TAC for TEA recently visited the GHS and GMS ACE program in operation on November 10, 2016. The results were outstanding , and the director , Mrs. Maria Adelina G . Villarreal and her team were invited to be showcased as one of the best ACE Texas High School programs in the entire state. One of the reasons, the program is so successful , is for the great parent and community engagement.

Two wonderful Thanksgiving feasts were celebrated November 16-17, 2016. The ACE staff, school administration and students would like to remind everyone to be thankful for what we have and to share this simple Thanksgiving story: A blind boy sat at the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said,” I am blind, please help. There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking

Grulla Middle School

by, he put some coins in the hat , then he took the sign and turned it around and wrote something. He put the sign back, so that everyone who walked by could see the new words. Soon, the hat began to fill. Alot more people were giving money to the little boy. That afternoon, the man who changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized the foot steps and asked? “Were you the one who changed my sign this

morning?” “What did you write?” The man replied,” I wrote what you said, but in a different way, I wrote today, is a beautiful day, but I cannot see it.”. The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling, and even more beautiful, is knowing that you are the reason behind it. A Happy Thanksgiving Day to all. -(B. De la Torre)

Application has been made with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission for a WINE AND BEER RETAILER’S PERMIT by: JOSE ALAFFA SR. dba ROYLIZ EVENT CENTER to be located at 812 RIVERA ST., RIO GRANDE CITY, STARR COUNTY, TEXAS.

On October, Adult Protective Services (APS) shined a light on financial exploitation of Texans who are elderly or have disabilities. APS and community partners were holding a series of events throughout the month to raise awareness and increase understanding of this serious crime. The good news is that this unscrupulous crime was down by 15 percent in Texas last year, following a 23 percent increase over the previous two years. There were 1,041 Texans victimized by

financial exploitations last year. “We’re happy to see exploitation decline, but we can’t let down our guard”, said Beth Engelking, associate commissioner for Adult Protective Services. “Exploitation is the ultimate betrayal and often leaves victims impoverished and unable to meet their basic needs. I urge everyone to learn to recognize and report financial exploitation.” What is financial exploitation? It’s when a relative or caretaker (or someone else with an ongoing relationship) improperly or illegally uses the money or property of a person who is elderly or who has a disability for personal benefit or profit. H-E-B Issues Precautionary Baby Food Recall H-E-B announced that it has issued a precautionary recall of its entire H-E-B Baby Food 2 pack 4 oz. cups product line only. As of Friday, November 18, 2016 the H-E-B Baby Food 2 pack 4 oz. cups were removed from shelves out of an abundance of caution due to a customer report of a small piece of rubber found inside a single container of one variety of the product. There have been no reports of injury or illness associated with this isolated incident, however the company is taking the issue very seriously and taking all necessary precautions. “Though we have only received one report of a foreign material in H-E-B Baby Food 2 pack 4 oz. cups, as a company, we are committed to absolute and complete food safety. As a result of that commitment, coupled with the fact that we are dealing with a children’s product, we have made the decision to pull all of our H-E-B Baby Food 2 pack 4 oz. cups from our shelves,” said Winell Herron, H-E-B Group Vice President of Public Affairs, Diversity and Environmental Affairs. H-E-B has launched a full investigation into the incident and is working closely with its H-E-B Baby Food manufacturer to ensure all safety measures are being taken when manufacturing the product. The FDA has been made aware of the recall. H-E-B is encouraging customers who have any H-E-B Baby Food 2 pack 4 oz. cups in their pantries to return it to their

nearest H-E-B store for a full refund. DPS Statement on Potential Terror Threat in Texas The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued the following statement regarding a potential terror threat in Texas: “While we do not typically discuss security issues, we can say that DPS is constantly in touch with fellow law enforcement and intelligence officials, including our Joint Terrorism Task Force partners. DPS is continually monitoring events involving potential public safety impacts across the state and nation. We can also assure Texans that we adjust our level of vigilance to meet any potential or emerging threats, and will also adjust our security measures as threats warrant. “As always, every citizen has an important role to play in helping to thwart illicit activity, and we encourage Texans to remain vigilant. If anyone observes any suspicious activity, they are urged to contact their local authorities or report it through Texas’ iWatch program at www.iwatchtx.org or by calling 1-844-643-2251.” For related statement from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, visit http://gov.texas.gov/news/ press-release/22815.

Did you know?

- Though some might feel it’s a relatively recent phenomenon, the history of Black Friday might actually have originated several decades ago. The day following Thanksgiving that marks the unofficial beginning to the holiday shopping season, Black Friday is not an official holiday and theories abound as to its origins and even what its name means. One theory suggests the nickname has little to do with retailers making money, and more to do with local law enforcement dreading the day after Thanksgiving. This theory suggests police officers in Philadelphia as far back as the 1960s nicknamed the day Black Friday because they loathed the traffic jams and rise in misdemeanors that occurred when holiday shoppers converged on local shopping districts. That theory counters the one that suggests the name stems from the onset of the holiday shopping season, when retailers saw their profits increase heavily and they were “in the black” for the year. Whatever its origins, Black Friday has now become such a phenomenon that the name figures to live on for many more decades.
